Thanks for this summary. Got the redcamp one and did a couple of hikes, decent piece of kit!

Good review Dr. Ernie. I like the idea of these stoves because you can use a wind screen without over heating the canister. Thanks!

Another remote-cannister stove to consider is the GSI Pinnacle 4 Season. Made in Korea (which I prefer over China), and an ingenious design. Collapses down to a very compact size.

I really like these remote canister stoves. I just bought a WADEO triple burner 7200 W stove and I just gave it a try using butane. It seems to work great and I'm looking forward to using it on my next camping trip.

I have two of the burners shown. This is BRS and ALOCS. I really like both, but Alocs are more suitable for my tasks. It gives a more expanded flame and is so more convenient to fry onion. BRS gives a concentrated flame and onions often burn. In the burner of the BRS, the copper tube simply moves heat to the bottom, but is not a gas heater.

I actually find it somewhat amazing that you did not include the MSR WindPro or WindPro II. This stove has been proven in harsh icy conditions such as the first ascent of the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat. You might want to take a look at it.

In my opinion the BRS - 11 stove works well for survival situations. I bought the butane model and a propane adaptor(separately) so you have a choice of fuels in an emergency situations. My own boil test with this stove for the pot I used the Optimus Terra Weekend HE (heat exchange.) The outside temp was 57 degrees with 19 mph wind gust, the stove was at full throttle. My timed results to a rolling boil....16oz water took 35 seconds and 24oz came in at 1 minute and 1 second. This stove for heating is the quick solution to boiling times.

One of the primary advantages to a remote fed stove is the ability to use a full windscreen. This allows you to keep the efficiency high regardless of the ambient wind.
@Rashoop
@Rashoop 2 года назад
Beat me to this wonderful benefit of remote-fuel stoves. I made my own windscreen that fits perfectly around my GSI Pinnacle 4 Season (a GREAT stove), and oh man does that increase fuel efficiency. I also designed the windscreen (made of thin-gauge aluminum) so that when rolled up, it fits nicely inside a 700mL Ti pot.

How is it not just as easy to use a full windscreen with direct fed canister stove?
@FlatCatGear
@FlatCatGear Год назад
@@johnkowlok3231 as in a canister topped stove? Because a snug windscreen can overheat the canister and potentially blow up.

I've enjoyed the MSR Universal but have limited use on it since I don't do much camp cooking in the winter. Sooooo much better than the canister top in the cold.

Your videos are helpful. I am a hunter who truck camps on remote trips. I always have 1lb propane canisters in my truck for my lantern. I am interested in small portable stoves that work with propane canisters as well as the butane canisters (i.e. the product comes with a 1lb propane to EN417 lindel valve adapter so you can use either type of canister). In fact, I just purchased the following two stoves, even though I only need one. I could not help myself. ;.) 1.) BRS Camping Backpacking Stove Propane Butane Camp Kitchen Portable Gas Stoves for Outdoor Cooking Equipment Hiking Ultralight Mini Stove With Adapters 2.) WADEO Camping Gas Stove, 3700W Portable Backpacking Stove with Piezo Ignition, Portable Burner, Camping Stove Adapter and Carrying Case for Outdoor Cooking You might want to review these and other stoves when they are burning propane instead of butane to see if there is any differences in your opinion.

The Kovea produces a much wider flame pattern than I thought it would. I’m sure there is more information about each of these stoves on this channel but a stoves simmering ability is as important as it’s speed to reach a boil.

I use a 0.9L wide Ti pot with it. I found my 750ml tall pot to not work well with the flame spilling up the side.

Good video as always. 👍 Can I suggest the BulinT4? Very highly regarded by fishermen in UK. Marketed on Amazon (in UK) under the Tentock or Boundless Voyage logo, but the same stove. Widely available. It has the great benefit of a heat pipe stove running across the burner for winter outings.

Hiii, I know this video is old but have you tried the Soto Fusion Trek? I'm debating on that one vs Fire Maple 117T or Fire Maple Remote Polaris for regular cooking (not just boiling water) while backpacking. I like the weight of the Fire Maple 117T but the Fusion Trek and Remote Polaris both have regulators, which I think may help with flame control?

I have a BRS 8 which runs both on gas canisters and liquid fuel (gasoline, white gas or kerosene). Not the lightest stove around but very powerful and versatile and folds quite small. With gas canisters I usually use the BRS 3000t though as it's almost ridiculously small and light. Still, the stove I mostly use is my Svea 123. Almost as easy and hassle free to use and reliable as a Trangia and much more efficient, especially in cold weather.

Need to review Soto Fusion Trek Stove as inverted canister stove. Weight is important while backpacking.
@natea1042
@natea1042 2 года назад
Fusion cannot use inverted canisters. It has no generator tube as pointed out repeatedly in this video so you're dumping liquid pressurized fuel directly out of the jet where it immediately vaporizes causing a very high and uncontrollable flame.

Isnt gas supposed to burn with a complete blue flame? I am wondering about the yellow flames. My Soto Fusion Trek also burns with some yellow which leads to slight black dusts on the cooking dish...always thought the stove is defect, but in your video I see the same behaviour of the gas stoves. Is that normal?

I do more car camping than backpacking. Is there a backpack stove that allows one to use the same tall elongated butane canisters that we use in our larger car camping stoves? I know the SOTO -320 does, but good luck finding one. It would be nice to consolidate one fuel source for both.

You can buy clip on adaptors very cheaply for the 200/220g butane cylinders that give you a screw thread that will fit these stoves.

Your name is Paleo “Hiker” not Paleo “Stove.” Why not expand to boots, gear, etc.? For the regulars hiker, investing in a Jetboul Zip. Everyone can do just fine hiking: day hike, overnight, 2-3 day hikes on a jet boil. And that’s pretty much and jet boil!
