I once hitchhiked with a super friendly guy in croatia and his girlfriend, but when we stopped to charge the electric vehicle at a supermarket, he got stuck in the toilet room for the disabled. We tried to open the door with an axe together with the store workers, but it didn't work. 45 mins later Croation Fireman freed him with some more proper tools. And Because of that, the two almost missed a wedding that he was going to sing at. Later that Day we sat down in a random beer shop in Zadar and told the guys there the story. Turns out the Beer shop owner knew the guy and said, that he used to be a politician who was trying to fight against corruption but gave up and instead became an opera singer... had a few more great hitchhiking stories in Croatia, mostly because the people there are just amazingly friendly

My scariest hitchhike was in Lesce, Slovenia, just crossed the border and it was getting dark as i needed one last lift to get to a better spot to camp for the night. As i got desperate a car with 4 big guys in it stopped for me, and i got in straight away. Straight away the driver took off tires screeching and as he literally drifted around corners they asked me if i like marijuana and coke, because they had some and were going to a party. These guys were obviously all high and i couldn't really get them to stop the car, they were having far too much fun trying to kill themselves (and me) by driving so fast. Finally we got to their destination and it was this really big kinda abandoned looking house. the inside was trashed and only contained some old couches and one large table with a group of people around it. They introduced me to a guy as big as a fucking silverback, who told me if i stay with him nobody will hurt me. They gave me a litre big beer can, asked me to play some songs on my guitar and it turned out this weird mafia looking gang was pretty nice to me. Then they asked me if i smoked weed, when i said i do they would get some 'from the local gypsies'. they drove off and let me wait outside the house, but never came back. A local taxi driver saw me sitting there for quite some time and offered to drive me to a place i can pitch my tent, and so i did. massive thanks to the taxi driver who took me for free, it was already dark out so without him i don't know how i would've found a place to sleep.

I've hitchhiked only once as a female, and it was when an intercity bus missed my stop in Morocco and dropped me off at the next junction, leaving me over an hours walk from where I needed to be. After about 15mins of contemplation of the pros and cons, I figured there was only really one place the road went (it appeared the main road used to go through the city until a bypass was built), so everyone on the road should theoretically be going into the city. It wasn't that big so I could easily walk once in the city. Anyway, I anxiously put my thumb out and a old car immediately pulled over with 2 guys in it. I had my thumb out for about 2 seconds. I was nervous but they offered to drive me right up to my hostel because the roads were quite steep (honestly not sure how their car made it up them), which I appreciated because walking up them with my bag would have near enough killed me (it was a few weeks after I recovered from covid, and long rona was still messing with my fitness and breathing). And that was literally it. I did think wtf am I doing a few times, but turns out they were perfectly decent people! Definitely wouldn't recommend it for a female in Morocco though. The amount of harassment I got on the streets was what was making me not want to even try and just deal with the 60+ min walk to start with.

A car sees me and pulls up, with two guys in the front and the back seats completely empty. They offered me a lift, so I said "great, let me just get my friends!" (Another guy and a girl) I shouted my friends and they came running over and then the guys in the car started saying no, they only had room for one (when the back of the car was empty) and they just drove off. Dawned on me that there was a good chance they were gonna rob me, or worse, when they thought I'd just be getting in by myself. Still a great trip though 😅

My husband and I saved a man’s life by hitchicking in his car ☺️or at least he strongly believed that. In 2013 me and my husband were hitchhiking in southern France. We had just gotten dropped off by another car and only needed to go a few kilometers to our final destination. First car that passes us was a mini van filled with young people that obviously didn’t have room for us so they went on. Next car was a young guy in a very rusty old car we’re the doors were plastered with tape to keep them on their place. Not looking as a very safe car we thought that if would be fine to go with him because it was for such a short trip. But just as we exited the small village we found the mini van that had just passed us minutes ago, upside down on the side of the road. Everyone had gotten out safe 😄. Our driver immediately said that if he hadn’t picked us up he would had most likely been evolved in the accident and not survived course the state of his own car 😌. We had to agree with him. We all got safely to our destination ☺️

I'll give you my quick top 3, all these hitches were two young females in the early 90s. 3: Glasgow to J40 M6 with a guy in a Luton van who kept falling asleep at the wheel, he spoke little English and I had to keep elbowing him as he wavered over the white lines. 2: Biggar to Edinburgh in THIRTY minutes with a young guy in a very fast car. Pron magazines all over the back seat and total disregard for road safety. Overtaking on blind bends, 120mph. It was over quickly thank frick. 1: Getting picked up after 24+ hours trying to get a lift in Riem, heading for Basil. This creepy old boy picked us up, drove immediately off the highway and ~20 miles into the countryside to an old, abandoned petrol station. We kept asking in French where he was going, "It's quicker this way" he said. When we got to the abandoned building he said in French "Get out". We both bailed at the same time and as he drove off he said "Don't get lost". We had to walk for about 4 hours before we found a TINY village which thankfully had a tiny bar and a phone so we could taxi back to the motorway. Zero traffic to hitch, really hot day. That one really scared me.

I have a scary hitchhiking story. I lived in upstate NY on the outskirts of a town and up the road was nothing but woods and a few farms. When was about 12-13 I figured it would be fun to take my dirtbike out for a joyride after my parents went to bed, probly around midnight-1am, and being a dumb kid I didn't think to check how much gas I had. Maybe 5-6 miles up the road in the middle of no where I ran out of gas and this was pre cell phone times so no calling an uber. I stashed the bike behind a tree and started walking home and almost immediately a car with 2 dudes in their early to mid 20s stopped and asked if I needed a ride. At the time I was freaking out thinking how bad my parents would beat my ass when they found out I took my dirtbike out so I didn't think twice and jumped in the car. It was only a few minute car ride and pretty uneventful until about a mile from my road the passenger whispered to the driver "should we kill this kid" and the driver kinda chuckled. I shit my pants. The next 30 seconds were in total silence and they stopped at my road and let me out and drove away without me or the guys saying another word. I'm still not sure if they were just messing around and thought it would be funny to scare me or if I got very lucky. Either way I was able to get a gas can and skateboard back to the dirtbike and make it home before I got caught. The dumb things we did as kids lol

Reminds me so much of hitch-hiking across France and Spain when I was 18 and 19. One time me and 2 friends were picked up at a service station outside of Seville trying to get to Jerez. It was close to 40 degrees and we'd been waiting for at least 4 hours and finally a tiny 20 year old Renault Clio parked up with a Romani couple in the front. We were so desperate to get on the road (a key factor in most of these stories it seems) so quickly climbed in - packed in like sardines with our backpacks piled on top of us as the boot was full of their shopping. We got on the road after a honey pot smashed and dripped down on our necks and the couple giving us a basket which we logically assumed to be food of some kind, but instead were several kittens who , as it turns out, had literally just been born a few minutes earlier and still had the placenta attached. It was so bizarre. The scary part of the journey only began though when we stopped off at a deserted village off the highway and a big camper van parked up behind our car full of a group of men who were their friends. In that moment, we all really thought we were about to be robbed at best, it was something right out of a movie. In the end though they just wanted to have a smoke and a drink before getting back on to the road half an hour later and were super friendly. Just like most of Tom's stories here, these fear comes just from the unexpected nature of how things turn out and well yeah the fear of the unknown. The reality is you have to be very very unlucky for something awful to happen! What a great idea for a video, I'm surprised you didn't do this earlier. Amazing as always Tom!!

Being Yorkshire born and bred, I used to hitchhike everywhere because it’s cheaper than public transport! My worst experience was hitchhiking back from Thirsk and some dude took me to a house... in the middle of nowhere... and told me to relax... I honestly thought I was about to be tortured, obviously I was terrified of him doing something horrible to me, but he just wanted to feed me and he made me a lovely meal (that turned out wasn’t poisoned!) and then dropped me off somewhere on the A1 near Wakefield so I could carry on home :-) I have no idea why he didn’t molest or murder me, I remember I did pray to every god that I could remember the name of and apologised if there were any I forgot, but I’m very, very, very grateful that he didn’t and I’m still alive today! Billie (now living in Lancashire!)

I used to drive a lorry around the peak district near Buxton, collecting milk from farms then driving back to Preston and I picked up many hitch hikers, going between Buxton and Manchester, I even had a couple of regular passengers for a while that were doing the same as you, just getting to work for free. It can be scary for drivers too, I picked up an old bloke one time that seemed ok at first but then started shouting out the window at passing people or animals, clearly mentally ill but I was very relieved when he got out. Picking up hitch hikers gave me many great memories apart from shouty bloke. I too still live in Lancashire.

My mom has a pretty scary story with a taxidriver in Bavaria, Germany. She was on holidays and wanted to take a taxi to meet with some other people to hike with them and about halfway the taxidriver asked her something along the lines of "aren't you afraid that I take you into the woods and rape you?" to which my mom just responded that she believes that he doesn't want to lose his job. Since this was a pretty rural area this was the only taxidriver there so on her way back she had to ride witht he same guy but apparently he didn't say anything weird this time.

I've only hitchhiked once in my life and it was one of the scariest things I have ever experienced. This was at night in Prague on the first vacation I took with my friends instead of my parents. It was around 1 AM and me and my 2 friends had missed the last bus by a bit. It would have been around a 2 hour walk back to our AirBnb but after walking about 10-15 minutes a guy in a beaten up skoda octavia pulls up next to us (he noticed we were tourists) and asked us if we were lost. We said we were not lost but that we missed our bus, bla bla bla, and the guy asked us if we needed a ride to where he was going, which was about a 5-10 minute walk from where we had to go. We agreed and hopped in. Then we started driving. At first he was nice, he spoke good English, made jokes and we were relieved that we did not have to walk so far anymore. It was when he left the residential area and went onto a bigger road that it started to get out of hand a little. We were behind a car that was going way too slow on the onramp thing to the road, he was cursing in Czech that the car was going slow but then he just stopped speaking and he overtook the car on the right, over the emergency lane and we thought that was probably a pretty normal/common thing there. But he didn't stop after that, he started zigzagging between the traffic, from the emergency lane to the fast lane and back a few times. There were not that many cars on the road but he made sure to cut up between most of the cars. We must have been going over 130-140 km/h on an 80 (I think) max speed road. We asked him to slow down a few times and he just kept saying yes I will slow down when we leave this road. We were scared shitless lol but he eventually (after I'm guessing 10 minutes) left the road and he indeed slowed down. We were all a bit too stunned to speak but the guy did as promised and dropped us off at a parking near our AirBnb. We got out of the car and I thanked him for the ride (very awkwardly though lol) and he had a smirk on his face from when we left the road until he dropped us off. Probably one of the scariest things I've ever experienced but I think the guy just wanted to scare a few tourists.

I was hitching from Kiev to Odessa, and got a lift from this dude, who was really excited to have an Englishman in his car. There were two seats in the back, and I was sat on the edge of my girlfriends seat, no belts for any of us. The dude driving us was really happy to meet an Englishman, and was showing me his music collection, and kept looking back and saying 'Cat Stevens', and excitedly pointing to his phone. He was lovely! But when a Lorry was parked on the road in our lane ahead of us coming up fast, I looked to see him looking for his dropped phone in the footwell of the car. I shouted 'STOP!' and he looked up to swerve quickly, and we missed the lorry by a foot. Literally, the closest I've ever been to death. My mates were pretty baked and they missed the whole thing. My girlfriend when I relayed this to her, doesn't even remember it. It was a little moment between me and that guy. My first ever hitch. My second was my best, this giant lorry pulled up, and the trucker within let us sleep in his bed, me and my gf wrapped around each other in blissful young love. I wouldn't change a second x

Not so much hitchhiking stories, but on my first trip to the UK I had a layover in London, I think from Gatwick to Heathrow. Being from Germany and knowing how strict some of the bus drivers here can be, my wife and I of course pre-booked and printed out the tickets, and yadda yadda. Only to run into a bus driver who wasn't even interested in seeing our tickets. We just handed her our bags, and hold the tickets out... but she didn't even glance at them. Well, that was 40 pounds wasted... Second time with a bus we went from Inverness to Urquhart Castle. Bought a return ticket because it was much cheaper than two single tickets. After our experience we figured that we just buy a ticket for a very late bus and hop on to any bus in that time span because drivers won't care. And we were right. Originally our bus was due at late afternoon. But we finished the castle tour, took a few selfies with Nessie (very nice gal!) and were ready to head back to the hostel. Took two busses earlier or so. Driver glanced at the tickets, saw we bought a ticket for a later bus, mumbled "eh, whatever" and let us on. Third experience was in Doune (you know, Doune Castle... "CHARGE!!!"), and the bus was like an hour late. Some of the locals waiting with us at the bus stop must have sensed we were tourists and told us that this is quite normal and the bus will turn up eventually, lol. The only time we hitchhiked was in southern Germany. Was looking for a bus into town when an old dude pulled up, yelled that the bus is due in an hour and we should just hop on. At first I thought the guy would be driving like a lunatic because he was holding the wheel in quite strange way. Both hands near the center. I was thinking he wanted to be able to honk really fast to bully his way through traffic, but he was actually a quite laid back driver, and saved us quite some time. Nice.

I heard "thanks for not killing me" one time I pick up hitchhikers very frequently, I drive a nice enough camry with a very obnoxiously overpowered stereo, 2 or 3 dash cams, pitch black tinted windows, a PA you can yell at people outside the car with, 4 mounted screens in the dash, a separate external speaker system with siren and fog horn, a CB radio and due to an error at the dmv, i have a law enforcement tag on my car so i never get into hot water. (I hadn't thought about how ridiculous this was until I wrote it out just now, i never have used the siren, but passengers love it) I also have, not that passengers know, a couple guns easily accessible at all times, and I never feel worried about who I pick up. I keep new clean socks in the glove box, jackets and shoes and shirts in the trunk, plenty of water bottles, and I tend to have many packs of smokes available. So I'm pretty much always down to go a long way if someone needs a ride, generally my rule is within the limits of how much gas I have in the car, unless they have really good stories. But I have only had 2 girl hitchhikers and the one I'll mention today, I had my girlfriend with me on that ride. As I approached, I thought it was a guy like Blake from workaholics, but it was this black girl who was very afraid of me and I genuinely did not understand what her deal was but I was like "look, I'm not telling you to get in, but if you would like a ride I'm going down this road for about another hour." She said "OK but turn on all your interior lights and I'm riding with the passenger door open" to this I'm like what the fudge, we are going 70mph, jumping out is.. are you crazy?" My gf explains and I feel like a fool instantly and agree and I keep tight on the side going half speed so she would be comfortable. She ended up going to a neighborhood about 10 miles away which would have taken forever to walk but didn't take long driving. She got out and said "thanks for not killing me" I laughed and me and the gf rolled out and got back on the highway. I wonder what happened to the videos I used to post🤔 the phone I had those on just bricked up and I don't have access anymore...

Middle of winter a blizzard incoming I see a hitch hiker about 5 miles from the nearest town. I offer to give him a ride and he takes it. About a mile from town I catch an ice patch, put it in the ditch and roll it. We were picked up by a mechanic test driving a car, got to town, I called my mom, rider calls a mystery person and walks away never to be heard from again. I informed the Hypo while reporting the accident and he just laughed it off guessing the guy will never hitch hike again.
