This has been so helpful! I just finished my first semester and start clinicals next semester and you answered so many questions for me. Also I completely agree, Rad Tech Boot Camp is AMAZING! Their videos are so helpful💜
Hello Julia, I’m a 60 year old guy heading into X-Ray Tech school. As an engineer I ran X-Ray and ultra sound on metal parts for many years. I also used a radioactive isotope on the thick cast iron parts. I got tired of getting laid off from manufacturing for the past 10-15 years as businesses after business closed. In fact back in 2006 our major customer canceled all orders. I ended up going to Iraq as I had no job and needed the money. Last winter a young lady with scrubs and a hospital ID started coming in every Tue and Thursday to the convince store I was working at. I asked what in the heck was she doing in our small farming town. She said she ran the x-ray at the local urgent care. I told her I did that many years ago. She said she loved it and I should consider going back to school for x-ray tech. I had chemistry, physics, calculus, and even several x-ray classes 30 years ago. I looked into it. The local Healthcare college said I could get in right away after I picked up my year of required health care classes at the local low cost community college. The usual A&P, and other fun classes. In A&P there are only two of us guys. He is also an engineer! I am so looking forward to getting into my x-ray schooling next year. I’m still in my first semester of pre-requirements. I’m also volunteering at Allen hospital who also runs the college. I’m hoping to get hired part time there as well. I love your class advice and your cheerful attitude to x-ray classes! Haven’t been in a college classroom in almost 30 years. Yikes! Keep up the good, helpful blogs please! Love scrub and socks and what you have in your bag.. my notes for theatre radiography Michael `s theatre II Tips 1. Take all the keys to every machine just in case yours stops working 2. Let the surgeon decide where the II comes from , where the Monitor should go, don’t assume 3. If the body part is over the steel table base, or the metal table edge, or gaps in the foam table are in the way then -solution- Move the patient. 4. Beware sandbags , can be put under hips/ chest by inexperienced theatre staff 5. Set a manual kv for extremities -so that even if you come in and are centred in the wrong place , the image will be correctly exposed. Otherwise if your going in and out, over the body part, even slight miss centering, will result in a black/ underexposed image, because it will give a fresh air exposure eg 44kv ( which would not get through a finger). Generally hand 52kv, ankle 57kv, knee/ shoulder 62k , then tweek it. I once I had a student who never centred bang in the middle once, for an ankle op . The surgeon didn`t notice. The foam table makes 2 kv difference. Some machines require the first exposure to be on the AED. 6. The ii has an obese button, which is the maximum mA output, find out where this is. If this doesn’t work and the image is black - still under exposed , the only thing you can do is try and use the Monitor brightness/contrast - this may well not work ! there`s nothing you can do !! with this machine. 7. Save all the images- make this a habit- you don’t know which operation turns out wrong, even though it seems ok at the time 8. If your doing AP and Lateral, every time you go to the other position , swap the image over on the monitors. So you always keep an AP on one side, and a Lateral on the other. This takes concentration. 9. The worst problem is obesity with osteoporosis. Obesity means the II will use a high KV eg 110kv ,so LOW contrast. The bones will be very hard to see, because they don’t have any bone in them ! If the surgeon is moaning explain this LOL I had the same problem with AP hip on a young man- biggest muscular thigh in England. 10. Expect the first image to be wrong, wrong place , wrong orientation. Move the wheels in the direction you want to go, either towards head/ foot or in/out , make it easy for yourself , move in each direction in turn, and you will get where you want to be. Small movement`s to keep control. 11. Don’t let the surgeons use the flat II surface to apply a wet Plaster of Paris, unless you cover it first with a plastic bag, or water will get into it and it will go bang ! 12. For hips / DHS cover the tube ( under the table/ hip) with a plastic bag ,so blood doesn’t get into it. 13. You can get a lateral of the humerus, femur with the patient flat ( both legs down) on the table if you come in sideways, from the opposite side, and angle 70 degrees. and the body part ( shoulder/ hip/ femur) is right over the edge of the table ( so the metal table sides are not in the way) 14. If you leave the theatre for a break ( very long case) always tell someone whose sterile ( surgeon/ scrub nurse) where you will be, just in case they suddenly need you back. 15. Only ask the surgeon a question when hes not doing something dangerous e.g. with a drill. 16. At the end of the operation get a clear answer you are finished BEFORE you remove the sterile xray cover.

I am currently in xray tech school. I am in a 16 month program. I will be expected to graduate next year in April 2022. I am currently going onto my second class in February! Such an exciting feeling!!! I LOVE watching your videos.

I actually just stumbled across you as I just graduated myself back in May - But still need to take my registry. (Don't ask - 2020 haha). I am so surprised the choices you have in your program!! we were VERY limited from shoes to socks and all had the exact same scrubs etc. Thanks for all of your helpful tips :)
I graduated in May and just passed my boards in early July! None of the Pearson centers around here opened until July so it just happened to work out :) you're going to do great! Yes, we were very lucky to be so open to options!!

Got into the 2 year program at my school. We start in summer 2021 because of all of the changes they went through during COVID with the last graduating class. I have been going to school part time for 3 years to get my prerequisites done so I’m super excited to get started. Thank you for your videos! Information on this is so niche and difficult to find. In my program we have the opportunity to complete the CT certification during the traditional X-ray program so I hope I am not taking on too much by doing both! 😅

I know this is a old video, but wanted to say I am watching because I just got into the rad program at my school! I start Oct. 6th. Trying to figure out what scrubs and shoes to wear. We have to wear all black. Love your videos!
