Honestly just started watching your content and it’s all because I got a chess board for Christmas from my dad. I’ve never played chess before in my life and never really paid much attention to it but your videos have captivated me and I’m staying engaged whilst you’re competing. These recaps go completely over my head as a noob but I’ll pick it up eventually 😂😂

You learned a valuable lesson last game not to underestimate your opponent! Chinese proverb 'a lion uses all of its strength when attacking a rabbit'. There's another one not as relevant in this case 'a lion that chases two rabbits will catch neither of them'. Good luck!

I used to officiate high school football (American) and some of the worst games I did was when I got to the game just in time. My mind hadn't transitioned into game mode yet. So, I was always playing catch up. It looks like you got caught in the same position. Congrats on the win anyway.

16:35 I was thinking of Bg5 myself, but that ends in a draw with perfect play and apparently the engine likes Bh4 the most, clearing the f6 and g5 square of the bishop and making it able to walk up and capture the pawn. The line you chose is also winning, and probably the "human way" to play. Keep the updates coming Anna! Great fun to follow you. Happy new year from Denmark.

Nice game Anna. I was told when I was going to tournaments to not ask my opponents rating at the start of a game beause either you either over estimate or under estimate your opponent. I was told to play the board and not play the rating. When the game is over and the result is known, I would then ask the rating. I actually beat someone much higher than I was because if I had known what their rating was prior to the match, I probably would have gotten intimated and played badly.

Not sure about this, but suppose white in the ending puts his King on g4 and moves it between g4 and h4 to keep out the black King. You can obviously play Be1 to stop him from doing that, but then you abandon control over a3, so Nb1-a3-b1 etc. becomes possible. White has a very passive position, no doubt, but will it be possible to break through?

Julien Song also had problems with the clock in his last tournament and it was very bad for him. A friend of his (who's a GM if I recall well) told him: "Stop trying to always play the *best* move. Just make sure to play a GOOD move." It ended up helping him a lot and he finished his tournament better than he started. So lately, everytime I see you struggle with time I say: "Come on Anna. Just find a good move!"

I don’t know if we have similar problems with playing slow. But I get often mesmerized by the position of play and the field of all possibilities rather than trying to win. I always want to think outside of the box and execute the proper tactic. Knowing that I have a won game , but I end up losing on time. I guess I would like to say that the creativity of chess is more important than the other aspects

Very well done. As someone who has mentioned how I think there are times when you spend far too much time when it is pretty obvious that a very good move (either best or very close to the same as best, and easy to play following moves) can be made, I do trust you to play well under time pressure. Hopefully your judgment about when it is worth getting into time trouble, will improve. My view is to only do that when it is critical enough and likely enough to find a superior move, versus every move you have found so far being too easy to beat. The night before last, I played a game where any of 3 moves seemed to win easily enough. One was extremely solid, one was trappier but solid enough, and one was aggressive and not flawed, other than the availability of the 2 better moves. I chose the solid move, and my opponents' imperfect response allowed me to play the trappier move in addition on the next move, then I crushed him. When replaying the game for analysis after it was over, the engine was having trouble deciding between the first two moves, both being around +0.5 but often switching places and varying from 0.45 to 0.63 as the engine level went from 26 to 30 to 32 to 34 to 36. I decided to let it run overnight, and I woke up with the analysis at level 51, with the trappy move being best, 0.54 vs 0.49 vs 0.34. Even knowing that, I would still play the more solid 0.49 move every time, because no tricks are required to keep a solid advantage. The trappier move may be better, but if Stockfish 16 at level 36 didn't understand what exact line punished the opponent most, as it did understand by level 51, then neither would I. Someone who just made a mistake costing them 0.5 on move 5, 6, or 7, was likely to make more mistakes, so I went for the absolutely solid move that locks up that gain, and waited for more mistakes and inaccuracies to flow in. Being around 1400, a consideration for me is what type of position I am better at playing, what types of mistakes am I better at avoiding, what style of game do I do best at. At your level, those things still matter, but not as much, because you make smaller mistakes, play almost every kind of position well, can handle any style of play, better understand what an opponent is trying to do, etc.

I analysed the moves on high depth in leela. Kg7 was indeed better than Bd8 because after the knight is free, you have the winning move Kg5 threatening the pawn on h5. If he protects with the knight, Ba5 gets white into Zugzwang winning the game for black. The reason that b2 is not the best move is Kf2 stopping both pawns. If you instead do what you showed in the video, your king can again attack the pawn on h5 and the knight cannot protect it again due to Zugzwang.

Congratulations Anna this a victory, nobody can take away from you. Don't worry about to much thinking in a game. You're just are a rising star and not everything is perfect right now...... but it will be soon.

You're time problem is about perfectionism...there is rarely ever a "perfect" move. I have been caught in the trap myself. Anxiety builds up as the time counts down so I would suggest that when you practice play that you give yourself a lower maximum time for any move and keep lowering it. It's difficult but it will force you to not constantly be looking for the "perfect" move.

I can hear mom in my head: "yes e5, that's... well I would have played differently... I would have played differently, yes... yes, not e5 yes... that's a very sad move e5..." What a dear.

You did play the end game "very nicely". Well done and congratulations on the win. 2 wins and a draw... and winning with the black sort of makes up for the draw with the white pieces the game before.
