PLEASE READ....those offended but my words, I'm going to address the third world country comment one time and one time only. I said that because as americans we always tend to think that Nigeria (or any country in Africa) is very poor and people live in huts, are uncivilized, run naked...etc, etc (just keeping it real). This is what we are taught in school and everywhere else. Now me being able to experience the country first hand and soon to marry a man and I have dated for 10 years (since high school), born and raised half of his life in Nigeria I have grown to learn otherwise. I felt like a part of me had a duty to let other americans know what what we have been taught all of our life is not 100% true. Since most of my time was spent in the village alot of the vlog showed "village life" So to my america subcribers watching this video they might automatically think omg, she went to Nigeria and lived like how we have been taught for the most part, which was not the case at all. Obviously, I did not show much of my father in law's home for privacy reasons or list the exact location. As you can see I showed random homes that are nice and big to show not every home is made like how they taught us they look like. I know for a fact that there are parts of Nigeria that you will go to and the homes are nicer and more luxury than something we would see in America. Now it would be very arrogant and pretentious of me to go and say that my in law's are not poor and they are well off and we had a house help to do whatever we needed and run errands for us....no, I was way more humble than that (My life will never even know what it is to have a house help in America)...just read between the lines please a beg. I can't insult something that is a fact. Fine developing or third world...same difference. The ONLY reason Nigeria is not "first world" is because of corruption. Let's be honest with one small example, explain NEPA....the means and funds are there to carry light all day and night 24/7/365 but then that would basically end generator sales and sales of the oils used to power it...key example of corruption at its finest. I may not be a Nigerian but I am also not an idiot.

Crystal Danielle Girl I was born and raised in Nigeria. If over half of the population is in poverty, then we can't claim to be the west. I loved your commentary and I'm glad you opened your mind to learn about your fiancé's culture. Whenever I go back to Nigeria, best believe I count my blessings too when I see young 6/7 year olds hawking goods in the streets and not going to school. People get sensitive when non-Nigerians talk about Nigeria but you are our sister now so those who are outraged should have several seats. Btw, you criticize Nigeria like a Nigerian 😂😂

Crystal Danielle it would have been more true to say Nigeria is a 2nd world country, not a third world country. As an educated American who is married to a Nigerian, you should definitely know that.

Cap4life Second, third, what difference does it make? It's deprived to the point that you probably somewhere abroad, instead of nigeria. I did however got a bit agitated that she used the word fortunate. As if she's in America walking on rose peddles. Girlfriend, we're all on planet earth going through the same emotional roller coasters just like people in all corners of life.

The IGBOS LOL well everyone knows them. I teach my kids there are good and bad people everywhere you go. I've been to Nigeria & yes there are some very rough poor parts but there are also some incredibly beautiful parts as well so it's not a damn 3rd world country! No black person should ever used that deplorable term. If the United States were labeled by places like Detroit, Newark, rough parts of Chicago, etc it would also be labeled a 3rd world country but you don't hear people in the United States describing the entire country based on the worst ghettos and trailer parks.

If this is third world, I was born in third world Alabama where my parents washed by hand and hung clothes on lines stretched across the back yard. We were still hanging washed clothes on lines like these in Loveman Village, 1967. The road to my grandparents house look like these, red dirt and muddy during rain - they had no windows. Third world? What does that really mean?
@melle2ems55
@melle2ems55 6 лет назад
I am kinda in the middle. My parents are from Mississippi and were born in the late 40s. Some of the ways they were raised are very similar to what she described. They moved to the Chicagoland area in the late 60s. It was at that time they had my sister then years later I was born. I have been here in the Chicago area all my life. I don't consider myself rich or poor but dead smack in the middle class. When traveling down south, I have seen the growth from when I was a child. But that region is years behind the northern region in every modern and technological way. Most people will come here for employment then return there for retirement. The arrogant attitude that is displayed though the video is unintentional. I have had it as well. I have been blessed to be able to experience this lifestyle and enhance it into my adulthood. Every person of color or person of this region should visit the less economical environments to further appreciate where all the tax money and employment opportunities have derived. I thank her for the video as I one day would be honored to visit Nigeria as well as some other parts of Africa!!!

But Evil People Die too so. They can continue their racist habit. As Young as she is she is saying they taught them that We walk naked on the Street. How evil are those teachers, From her Estimated age These Teaching will be like Just 10 to 15 years back. That's the time they taught them that Africans are all naked. Stupid People.

It looks like you did visit an eastern village which is a much different experience in comparison to eastern cities like Enugu or large cities like Abuja or Lagos. When I lived in Nigeria, I lived in Enugu so I had electricity, water, cable, infrastructure and other things common with city life. Even now, I struggle with staying in the village so props to you, for doing so.

The hand washing thing takes me back to when i was a little boy in south carolina, my relatives had to hand wash a lot of their clothes, only a few of my relatives had washing machines, but guess what the ones who used the hand washing technique, still alive, still slim, and still beautiful. There is something to be said about hard working / hard living people.

Haiti applied to the African Union and was denied. So, it seems Haitians are not Africans, by Africa's own admission. Furthermore, Haitians know their heritage. I don't think any Haitians deny their blackness or their African heritage, when it is literally imbued in their nation's revolutionary founding and in its constitution.

African Americans need to visit Africa because they will gain a lot , at least they will have sudden surge of confidence because in this great Africa nobody looks down on another, we are all equal as black people, and in any situation I may have nothing but my dignity as a human being and a black person does not stop me to become what I want! I have been to so many countries but I always miss Africa , just so natural, Africa is diverse and has the biggest group of middle class that's growing ,the future is here, if every African American had a home which is far much cheaper than America it would have also built the economy of Africa

Nigeria is an experience. When my girl came to Nigeria for the first time, she said we have no traffic rules. But that was not the case, we have but its implementation we lack. She loved the originality, the fresh fruits and meat, took her to some very traditional places so she could feel the naija vibe. Being in Africa will always give you a feeling of your true origin. I wish y'all the best. Power to Nigeria, Power to Africa

Disregard my name and icon but i traveled to Nigeria about 6 years ago i was relatively young and me being from the US I let all of there images in history class of slavery and "bush Africans" scare me, when I went with my family I have to say, it is one of the most beautiful places that I've ever been to in my life. My family is fully Nigerian and we stayed in Lagos then traveled to Calabar just in time for the festival. It was so nice to see all of the family that I have for the first time ever (first generation immigrant) and I cant wait to go back ASAP. She looks like she had fun but I agree with the 3rd World Country comments, america is always trying to come out on top and they say that places such as this is a disgusting, filthy dirt whole. If I didn't have the chance to go there for the first time I would've believed it myself being full Nigerian. I love Nigeria, it;s beautiful. America stop painting false pictures. No country should ever be referred to as a third world country least of all Nigeria. I even find the term developing and developed problematic. Who gets to decide what country is developed or not? Why, it's those with robust economies in the West that sets the standard so guess what no country outside the West will ever measure up. By the time the African countries start looking like the Western countries, we'd still be called developing or third world because of one thing or the other. Please check that kind of language as a black woman yourself. It's degrading.

We experience things differently. I am happy you went to Nigeria and had your ancestral experience. your experience is not something any malformed history can ever reverse again, it is yours to keep no matter who and to whatever degree others may disagree with you. In many cases, Nigerians do not get the holistic experience of Nigeria dynamic and multifaceted cultures. I grew up in Edo and not knowing the different parts of the Edo state and its many cultures. I have been to Lagos and Ibadan. I passed through Kaduna to Sokoto and I lived in Ibadan for a couple of years. While I have met many Nigerians from different background, I am yet to visit 30 other states of the federation. Learn their culture, their language, food and everyday idiosyncrasies. I live in Toronto now which has been my home now for many years. It is quite surprising that more than half of diasporic Nigerians who can fake a non Ibo or Hausa accent automatically claim Lagos origin. In some sense it is a good thing as it demonstrate how the Nigerian identies are maleable. On the other, it makes a mockery of those who hod steadfast to their undying monolithic identity. The point is no one person can speak for Nigeria or Nigerians. Through small individual experiences like this, much of the intricacies of the Nigeria societies are exposed and projected on to the global cultures. What count in this case is your open mindedness to accept and build a family far beyond the comfort of your birth home, the zeal to explore, your knack to learn to contrast what you already know and above all it is a point of return for which many may never be able to make. Good work.

Barbie Flygerian I'm Nigerian, lived there for three years and it's true... Nigeria is a third world country. The economy isn't as good as many other countries of the world. We don't even fully own our oil and allow other countries to handle it. Corruption is at its all time high as well. If Nigeria isn't a third world country, then what is it? The sad thing is that Nigerians don't accept the fact that they are in that category. That our country could've been already developed if we weren't so weak in terms of the business and political aspect of life.

My child has been learning about Africa through her (online) school, and the history lessons about Africa have been almost entirely about the animals, environment, and the most traditional of the tribes. You wouldn't know there was a single city on the continent. I have been digging through Facebook looking for videos to show her to round out the lessons, and almost everything I have found is more of the stuff she's been learning in school, or relief videos asking for help (not that they aren't important, a lot of places need aid), or videos that seem to shame the rich kids that live there (I haven't actually watched any of them). Your video has been the best so far for showing daily life in the city, the similarities between cities there and here, as well as the differences that a little kid can understand. I am recommending it to the parent group for other kids whose parents want them to see more than offered. Thank you!

Nice vlog. I'm Nigerian too and my wife is from Detroit, Michigan. She had a ball when we visited in 2009.She has since been bothering me that she wants to visit again. Maybe we will go next Christmas.Like you guys we visited Lagos, Abuja and Enugu cities, but we spent the bulk of our time in the village with limited public utilities as electricity and water. Like you guys we had our own water supply tank from the borehole. So I installed a little washing machine before our arrival and it made it a lot easier for my wife to do her laundry and the kids clothes too. No need to install drier, as your clothes line will do the job quickly after the washer spins the clothes to remove water. It costs a total of about $300 dollars to purchase a decent washing machine and pay a plumber to install it for you. Sometimes, the installation is free depending on where you purchased your washer. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

B Yon I would like to go every year but that's probably not realistic so hopefully every other year. I would like to live there half of the year. All of the homes that were in the back of the village like where we were are all very big and new. It's crazy because there's not such thing as a mortgage over there so every house is straight cash so it can sometimes take a while to build houses depending on your cash flow.

Born and raised in Nigeria before moving abroad permanently then coming back to the same old shit I can give a first hand account- Nothing CHANGED! We should use the same energy used to fight bloggers online to fight our corrupt leaders who made our lives miserable. Our leaders have firmly re colonized us and we are so dumb and stupid to remain quiet. Nigeria I would say is a failed state because nothing works NOT even power. The only difference between Nigeria and Somalia is there's no war and for y'all who will attack this post, take a chill pill and see beyond the damn lines. Crystal, Your husband is truly lucky to have a woman like you willing to see where he came from and what his childhood experiences must have been. I am glad you made this video. Nigeria has villages and cities. In none of these locations do people live on huts and all that stereotype about Africa. I am not saying there is no poverty, it's just not the extent stereotyped in the west. Anyhow, i noticed you guys took a road trip from Abia state to Lagos! It must have been such a hectic experience and I'm sure it would cost more. In your next visit, you can fly from Lagos to Owerri airport and get picked up from there for a 30-45 minutes ride to Obinkita village. Even better itinerary would be to fly from Washington Dulles airport to Enugu via Addis Ababa with Ethiopian airlines. Enugu to Obinkita village should be about 1-1.5 hours trip which is a lot less stressful. Thank you for sharing your experience and your family. I really love watching your video.
