My Trip to Pemberley | Chatsworth House Tour in Derbyshire 

When I went to Chatsworth it made me laugh that on the statue of Mr Darcy from the 2005 film there was a small sign saying "please do not kiss"

That statue with the veil is absolutely incredible.

US tourists to "Old Europe" sometimes get things wrong (like being locked in someone's garden), but one thing they often get right is ENJOYING the places! I just love walking around an historic building and hearing that US family being completely excited about everything. And yes, I'm the sort of guy who loves talking with chatty Americans, so I've ben an impromptu tour guide quite a few times, simply because it's so lovely to chat to people who are genuinely excited about what they're seeing. I thought this was a very charming video.

Okay but ‘Locked in Pemberly’ sounds like an adorable Jane Austen inspired movie😄

Watching this makes me feel so lucky to live about 5 minutes away from Chatsworth! I’ve been going to Chatsworth for as long as I can remember and it is by far my favourite place on earth and go at least once a month. The reason it was very dark when you went was because of the fashion exhibition to preserve the clothing. I’ve just been today and they have reopened it after Christmas and all the scaffolding you will have seen on your trip has been taking down and all the windows have been opened. So lovely. You will certainly have to go back to enjoy the lovely light of it. Also, definitely just subscribed to your channel☺️

Isn't the place just lovely? We love Derbyshire and the whole Chatsworth Estate with the tiny villages are the sweetest.

Twenty years ago the Duchess would occasionally help out in the gift shop or farm shop or anywhere they were short-staffed. I was friends with people who lived and worked on the estate then and one of my friends had a summer job in the farm shop and worked alongside Her Grace. One visitor heard her name as Grace and started complaining about something, totally unaware of who she was speaking to . . . at one point saying "Somebody should tell the Duke!" Apparently Her Grace said that she would be sure to let him know! My friend at the time was hiding behind the cheese counter doing her best not to laugh.

I'm very late to the party but after reading about the Bachelor Duke I can totally see Darcy in him. He seemed like a cool and friendly guy but maybe came off a bit snobby to strangers due to his deafness? Also he had a sister named Georgiana :) Liked your video! I hope I can check this place out sometime.

And Lyme Park which is Pemberly in the '95 BBC production is only ~27 miles NE along the A623/A6 from Chatsworth, and so is easy to visit too, if you are at Chatsworth.

"Worrying" sheep means to chase them. Chasing sheep too much can case them to run so hard that they suffer a calcium deficit and fall down. They then need to be treated by a vet with an intravenous calcium infusion until they feel better. If they don't get it, they could die. Overly enthusiastic dogs will sometimes worry sheep to death. Sheep are not the brightest animals on the planet and can be chased into barbed wire fences, trip and hurt themselves while running or just step on each other. Please don't chase sheep or allow your children, companions or pets to chase the sheep either. An intact ram, on the other hand, will stand his ground and could hurt anyone that tries to worry the sheep.

For anyone that has watched ‘The Duchess’ movie with Kiera Knightly based on the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth was their home (or one of their homes) in real life as it is the seat of Duke of Devonshire 😊

The Sixth Duke of Devonshire William Cavendish actually had a sister named Georgiana Countess of Carlisle which probably was the inspiration for Mr. Darcy's sister Georgiana. ❤

Absolutely love your videos (including this one)! Just wanted to mention as a girl from the English countryside, if you come again and see sheep, please, please, please don't try to pet them! The "don't scare the sheep signs" do seem odd, but it's because those fields often have pregnant sheep in there that can miscarry, which as well as being absolutely awful for the sheep is hard financially for the farmer. Also, getting in between an ewe and their lamb can be really traumatic for the ewe. Not trying to be a troll, just to educate others watching this!

Well that Duke doesn't look bad, he could pass for an alternative Mr. Darcy, but it's Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen fault for being so darn perfect as Darcy (L). And btw so sad you were so close to meet the Duke and Duchess, that would have be amazing!

My friends and I have been to Chatsworth twice. The first time we went was for my birthday, which is a week before Christmas and it had been snowing so everything looked even more beautiful and all the Christmas trees in the house were fabulous. We then went in the summer and spent more time in the grounds, which are so beautiful. We would go again, but we live on the north-east coast of England and it's a really long drive down to Derbyshire. However, we are lucky that we have some fabulous stately homes near to where we live. We love Castle Howard which was recently seen as the duke's home in Bridgerton and Alnwick Castle, which has been in Harry Potter and loads of other films. My favourite though, is Raby Castle which is an hour's drive away. It's a bit smaller than the others, but it has fabulous gardens and has herds of deer wandering around the grounds, not where the visitors are but you can see them, especially when you stand at the walls surrounding the main house and look out over the estate.

On my first trip to the UK (also in May!) we were going to stop by Chatsworth House but I got so sick with the flu that we called it off. So sad I missed it! Definitely something I'm going to do on my next trip to England!

As someone is really annoyed by my sister who studies the deer in phoenix park and tourists keep feeding them even though it makes the deer ill and they could trample the humans, she then complains to me about it night and day, when a sign says not to bother animals. In the Minneapolis Museum of Art, we have a sculpture of a Veiled Lady (I think that actually is the name of the piece) by the same artist. I have spent hours looking at the thing. That guy was very much a specialist, but his sculptures were incredible.

I researched the 95 film and Lyme Park was used as Pemberly. It is fairly recognizable

You're not supposed to worry the sheep because in lambing season the stress could cause them to misscarry or even kill them... They probably weren't that worried about you though ;)

Had similar experience at Bodiam Castle. All of the sudden everything was closed, all the taxis were gone as well as all the people having picnics on the ground. Except for a sweet lady in the tea shop. She called her friend taxi driver who took us to train station to be on our way to London.

We live 10 mins up the road from Chatsworth and my daughter works in the Collections dept , so we get to visit for free and all her friends and some of mine take advantage of this perk too lol 😂. Especially at Xmas which is so special . It has saved few hundred pounds altogether!!

I toured Chatsworth in September 2018. LOVED everything thing about it. Yes, amazing gift shop (I bought soap and every time I use it I am back in that gift shop looking at books about Anne Boleyn)! I only had 2 hours there...

I worked as a visiting research scientist at The University of Sheffield for a few months and was very excited to take the bus over to Chatsworth (as a Jane Austen fan) with my colleagues from work. I was so excited to visit - but I only had time to tour the gardens and not the house, but that's also what Lizzie did when she visited. 😊😊 I also bought one of those $5 magnets from the gift shop.

Ah! Now I want to go so much. The main character in my novel lives in an enormous mansion on Dartmoor. I've been using the Chatsworth House book for ideas. I wish so much I could go visit and see it with my own eyes. Maybe someday.

Yup I was the same here in Australia but there is Thursday and Friday has longer hours.

yeah word of warning, most things in England close at about 5pm (apart from basic shops), on Sundays it's even earlier, if they open at all on that day... and I think the Devonshires just live on the top floor, they definitely have private quarters apart from the main house

Hi Ellie. If you are ever in the Scottish Highlands you should visit Inveraray Castle, the home of the Duke of Argyll. It was built in the second half of the 18th century to replace a medieval castle and the decor of the main rooms is exquisite.

You really should make a stand-up routine from this. It would be so fancy! And so funny!

This was hilarious! If only you had met the Duke and he looked like Ralph Fiennes! I don't recall if Chatsworth was actually used in The Duchess (also with Keira Knightly), but while the story line is earlier than anything Austen, the film is a feast for the senses. The gardens at Chatsworth are extremely famous, and the Duke in the portrait is not the only one to spend tons of money on them. Later, in the 1850s, Joseph Paxton, who had designed fancy glass garden structures for the then Duke of Devonshire was hired by Prince Albert to design the Crystal Palace in London. I'm kind of into gardens, in case you can't tell. :)

Just an aside, everything closes early in the UK because they have a value for work/life balance. Shops close so the workers can be with their families, etc. I experienced this in other countries in the commonwealth too. America, being a capitalistic nation and very focused on making money, has the opposite view.

Haha I love pride and Prejudice, I live half an hour away from chatsworth and I still haven't been round it 🙃 there's other places you can go to that featured in the movie and TV series... like Longnor isn't far from chatsworth and that's where they filmed the scenes in lambton. Also there's the cliff where Elizabeth stood looking at the peaks, not to far away too!

If I ever make it back to England Chatsworth will be one of the first places I will want to go back to. I really enjoyed our visit there in so many ways. It is not just 'a fine house richly furnished' the gardens are amazing, too. That statue is one of the most amazing pieces of art I have ever seen. You feel like you can just reach out and pull the veil away from her face, don't you? And that is the most hilarious story, of you getting locked in, and then almost meeting the Duke and Duchess! lol.

The duchess wrote a book about the house. It's such a wonderful book. What an amazing house. I would love to visit it.

I must go see Chatsworth when I visit the UK., but I cannot promise you I will wear a bonnet! I think I would like to visit at Christmas. I bet they do it up! I love the majesty and grandeur of these old houses. It is tragic when they are not taken care of. I am totally on the same page as you with the statue. I noticed it right off the first time I watched the movie. It is a fabulous statue and you have deepened my curiosity about it since they say no one knows how he did it. Every time I watch the movie ( no idea how many times I have seen it) I wonder how he did it. I go back to the words of some sculptor who said that when he makes a statue you simply remove all that should not be there. Somehow this statue looks much more difficult. Thanks again Ellie. The picture of the bachelor duke has a similar high forehead to the actor Matthew MacFadyen so I would say he would appear very attractive as Mr. Darcy.

I have been a few times as we don't live far away from it (compared to you Ellie). The best time was in March with deep snow all around. Not many people were there and the grounds looked stunning, all dressed in white.

In GB the sign telling you "not to worry the sheep" means "do not bother the sheep" for us Americans. That sign does not mean "you can pet the sheep".

The thing is, Pemberley was never written like this. Risings was like this. Read the description, it was older with darker stone and seemed part of the landscape. This is a modern notion of a cool house

I live about and hour and 30 mins away from Chatsworth and I wish I visited more, I went with my family a few years ago and really wanted to buy the small bust of Mr.Darcy from the gift shop, but it was quite pricey :/ You've made me want to go back dressed up haha :)

This is not Pemberly inspiration of Austen. This is Pemberly for the 2005 film. But you can find the real Austen's inspiration if you read her biography.

The 6th Duke of Devonshire couldn't be an inspiration for Darcy because he was born in 1790, and Austen wrote the first version of the novel in the late 1790's... unless she heavily altered his character, or added it later, which I doubt since he's so central to the story.

I knew worrying was along the lines of interfering and bothering the sheep but thought I'd find out for sure and it turns out to be an offence applying to dogs worrying sheep. Apparently you were quite safe bemusing and befuddling them. LOL I was to go to Chatsworth in 2015 when we were in England but missed out (my aunt in Manchester nearby had other ideas) but next time I hope. Would have been fun to meet the Duke and Duchess. :)

In the 70s and 80s there used to be short second public information films on the television about not letting your dog worry sheep. They really puzzled me. Another thing that puzzles me is why the Duke of Devonshire would live in Derbyshire.
