In this comparison based review, I take a long hard look at Valves Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally, discussing size, build quality, hardware features, sound, screen, performance, battery life, OS user experience, Linux & Windows pro's / cons, onging support / spare parts, desktop / laptop replacement viability, price, who should buy and which one would I buy?
I feel that you can't consider these Windows & Linux (Steam OS) devices in isolation, and one doesn't really trump the other, but they both definitely have their strengths and weakneses.
Of course both devices are great, and neither is perfect, but my conclusion would be this:
The Asus ROG Ally (Non Extreme) version is a bargain of a way into PC gaming if you can pick it up for $400.
The Steam Deck Oled 512gb version is the perfect addition or accessory for someone who already has a gaming PC or laptop and a mature game library on Steam. Be very aware of its limitations if this would be your first gaming PC, but it is a great price.
The full price Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is expensive at full retail - but does give you easy access to non steam launchers and very importantly, PC Xbox Game Pass.
Now if Asus could just get the Ally Extreme to the price of a OLED Steam Deck, we really would be at the races...

I'm an arpg player POE, Diablo and so on and the screen means more than the FPS because things like crafting are so text heavy, the steam deck blurs the text with halos where the Ally screen is much sharper. Also a point to the Z1 non extreme it's benchmarking right along with the MSI claw intel arc APU. You can get an open box Z1 for $300 right now which is probably the best deal to get into the handheld market.

Yes, most of them (Last of Us, Ratchet of Clank, Death Stranding..) but exceptions exists.

i wanted one and pain get one in switzerland then got asus on sale from germany and claimed tax back so even cheaper. now id like a steam deck still but asus screen is jaw dropping. And kids have switch oled but the screen is still amazing. add in fact i can play xbox games my epic games my gog games and steam is implemented so well on asus as well. I love it but would still like steam deck. But if you ger rog cheaper id go for that

Whichever company figures out adding a sim card slot to add mobile internet service will really have something. Like instead of making "gaming" smartphones that plays mobile versions of games they could have portable gaming PC's that are capable making calls and texting as a whole new gaming community. I'm gonna have to disagree about the name of a possible "portable windows gaming" unit and tying it to Xbox. I feel like that name will immediately eliminate it from the ranks for a good number of people. Anyone who's a hardcore playstation "guy" will need to SERIOUS convincing before they bit on ANYTHING associated with XBOX. Not only that the "ignorant" people of the world(and there's a lot of em)wouldn't be able to understand that it's not a portable Xbox console rather than a whole on gaming PC. Kinda like how they couldn't understand how the PS portal WASN'T just a standalone portable PS 5 instead of an extension of the playstation

I don't no why they selling a steam deck with 64 gb for $500 and a rog ally non extreme for 399, at least the steam deck 64 should be $300 or 250, it bacilly a memory card difference the rog ally winning still
