I think I'd have just drilled a hole next to the vga socket and put the audio socket there. Also with all the space why not put the power supply inside?
@RMCRetro
@RMCRetro 4 года назад
Yes that's a nice place to put the audio socket, and keep the audio and video together. I'll explain my logic...1. my drill was at home on that day and 2.... I'm new to 3D printing and find that the best way to learn is by solving a problem, so I gave myself a problem. The power supply is nothing more than a small wart plug so unless you need a little PDU inside for other peripherals it's not needed. Perhaps a brick though...to give it authentic weight!

@Snohup
@Snohup 4 года назад
@@RMCRetro I would move that wall wart inside the case, add a IEC 60320 C14 chassis-mount male connector, and disconnect the AC directly from the power button. That way you can have the computer connected and ready go with just the press of a button, and without the whining noise of the power supply when it is off.
@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330
@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 4 года назад
@@sirconkers342 Hydrogen. There is space in the case for a litre or so of hydrogen, a fuel cell and a step down transformer. Plus there is enough space on the blanking plates for an industrial strength connector to take the hydrogen charging port. The waste water can be used as part of the CPU cooling system or discharged with the help of a 5" fan attached to the case. A 10th Generation Intel I7 CPU with 16Gb of RAM from an Intel NUC mini-PC could also be put in the case with its own web server software for access. This could then enable management of the hydrogen power supply system from outside of the cave. This solution would present a period correct external look to the case if the hydrogen could be filled through a faux kettle plug style PSU on the back. This would have a pass-thru connector to power the monitor with 240v. It is this little final detail that makes me think hydrogen power is the more elegant solution than just a battery. Imagine if playing a retro game and there was a power cut, with the simple hydrogen solution rather than bulky batteries you would be good to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Attach the USB hub directly to the expansion card bracket. You'll get 3 ports with 0 wires. Just need 1 longer cord. Completely clean. Use the 4th for a front mount USB or put a receiver for a wireless keyboard. Get a USB A to micro A adapter so you can use a different hub with all 4 ports in a row for this design. 1 wire, 4 ports, no spaghetti.

A company called Origin actually managed to cram a PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and a high-end PC into a single case. It was called the Big O. It was just a one-of-a-kind build but it did work. Interestingly, they later made a mass production version of it, but with only a PC and an option for either a PS4 or XB1.

Wait a sec... wouldn't it be perfect to hang it in the expansion card area? Then the adapter will also be universal to fit into many kinds of cases. If you had the µATX/ITX version of the rear panel, you can add a streaming PC with Intel QuickSync (while AMD can't get their Media Framework act together) in the middle. I suppose it shouldn't be too much trouble to chain power MiSTer from ATX. If the distance between boards isn't right, a stackable pin header can work as an extender. Is front USB somehow an option? You get a 3D model for the drive bay cover, but i guess it can be difficult to match the colour and texture. What you can try is have the model be oriented such that the outer surface is approximately vertical, so basically the right side up rather than outer side up, and enable "Fuzzy Skin" experimental function in Cura, this imitates the bumpy surface of most moulded plastic parts. But it still tends to look somewhat unconvincing, so maybe being printed in ASA or HIPS and being acetone vapour polished would bring it closer to the goal. But this is a multi step process with a lot of tunable parameters, such as fuzz step, layer height, and acetone concentration and exposure time, so it's a multidimensional optimisation problem with all the ensuing difficulty. Of course 'better' is the enemy of 'good enough' but i just thought i'd throw random ideas out there, even if they're almost useless.

I would recommend getting a micro SD extension and a USB - Serial non-transformative adapter so that you can use the USB as a traditional serial port and change out the Micro SD card whenever you need. I would also 3D print a fan shroud and mount an exhaust fan at that vent nearby to help with thermals. And yeah, internal PSU would not be a bad idea. I would recommend a powered USb hub as well. Just conform the power jacks together out the back (or, preferrably, use an IEC connection as well). For extra pizzaz, make a power pass-through for the monitor, so the whole assembly can be plugged in on one connection. Would be more work, but overall I think a better result. If you want to go an extra step forward, tap into one of the USB porta internally and attach it to a USB - SATA adapter, coupled to a drive bay on the front. That way you can use a front slot on the case, have a hot-swappable drive bay for easy access, and more functionality overall. I also agree with the suggestions you made at the end of the video concerning getting the power switch and LEDs to function and blanking off the back panels. Maybe take it one-step further and use a USB - PCI adapter to give you actual PCI slot compatibility, but that's kind of insane and not useful at all haha XD. Painting all your mounting solutions to match would certainly also be beneficial, but perhaps not necessary. If you need any help with the 3D models or anything else, let me know :) Cheers!

I know the MiSTer can handle a 16-bit 486, but can it handle a 32-bit PC? I wanted to build an old Win 9x mini PC with a breakout board with old PCI (or AGP) bus where I could install something like a Voodoo series gfx card. Maybe a Voodoo 3 or Banshee. Hell, I'd be happy with a Voodoo 2 daisy chained to a 2D VESA or something. I just would love to replicate my 2nd 90's build PC but with new base hardware (with the exception of an old 3Dfx GPU and maybe a Soundblaster AWE 64).

"MiSTer Cave Dweller"....wouldn't that be funny if that's what he named it? But this thing is awesome. Not sure of all the capabilities of the MiSTer but if it can do Amiga, I'd put a floppy drive in the front and use it to boot Amiga discs as well. That case is an Amiga 1500 case design after all

Hi, I build something similar in atari 2600 clone few years back. You can get DC plug with wires to solder on the other side so you don't need to solder on SBC. You can also get USB A male to A female mount to screw on the plate. You can also get flip switch on the back if you need to do power cycle it hard way :) . There are also some solutions for powering on and off by button. You can buy most of it pretty cheap on AliExpress or eBay. Hope it helps ;)

I can't help thinking the empty space needs to be utilised. You could squeeze a Raspberry Pi in there and NUC PC - probably a few other machines as well.... Or use it for hidden storage for your public domain amiga demo porno slideshows

Ahh USB-A to header cables and connectors - using a bunch of those (plus, like you do, some internal USB hub magic), several from Akasa no less, in my reverse sleeper rigs to get USB front panel support. There are internal USB hubs (NZXT makes one, for example) with header support rather than USB-A connectors - could make it a little tidier. Still need a micro-USB to header adapter somehow though (to get the uplink connected), it'll be an interesting challenge. ;) Also, the cables I'm using are bundled two and two (to create the 9-pin header connector rather than two 5-1 pin connectors), also makes for marginally better cable management. Still a challenge, not gonna lie. LOVE these types of solutions to get stuff working though, great video Neil! And, uhm... couldn't you just have drilled a small hole in the bracket (used for HDMI+VGA) for the 3.5mm jack? :p Not as good looking as the 3D printed mount you did though, so I fully understand your choice.

I "invested" in a MiST FPGA when MiSTer was just starting to be a thing, leveraging a lot of the idea, concepts and cores of the MiST but based on "home brew". You had to get the additional PCBs made yourself and solder every component OR try to find someone that would build it. MiST on the other hand was a fully realised stand-alone product, and boxed, which for me seemed like a MUCH better idea than something based off a "development board" which could potentially go out of production at any time. It was amazing loading up some ADFs of some 17Bit Software PD disks onto the SD card and booting up music disks that I obtained in the first few weeks/months of owning an Amiga 500 (purchased in December 1989). It really was an exciting day. I do not regret my choice of the MiST (and probably still would not go for a MiSTer) but that REALLY looks like a cool project you have there.

Why not use a dedicated INTERNAL USB hub, instead of re-purposing an external one? Like this one: www.nzxt.com/products/internal-usb-hub

Hm, don't forget of some easy way to put more games and stuff on the Micro SD or maybe USB stick (or even external HDD). I wish the way how resolutions and refresh rates are handled, would be different. Like being able to switch to the true resolution of a game instead of the preset resolution + scaling on the fly and then being able to slowly raise the refresh rate, until the CRT monitor will display the image. Once reaching the vertical refresh rate where even a 31kHz monitor can display 15kHz resolutions (like 320x200) without scan-doubling, you should be able to save it. So far running emulators and custom resolutions on my lappy, connected to the monitor gives better results. Only VGA to Scart looks even better in certain ways, but has problems (at least with my cable), like one CRT TV only displaying a dark gray-scale image (Samsung), another one will turn black after a while (Cinex) and only the 3rd works without problem (JVC).

So on the MiSTer FPGA forums someone had the pinout for the buttons and LED lights from the I/O board. You can get your power and activity lights from there. misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?p=364#p364

NZXT makes a magnetically mounted Internal USB Hub: www.nzxt.com/products/internal-usb-hub It splits a standard 9-pin motherboard header into 3 9 pins (so 6 ports) and to 2 type A ports. You'd still need one Type A to Motherboard adapter cable, but it might do the trick, however it's designed to accept a 9 pin, so I don't know which ones or how many of the ports would be activated with only 1 USB cable plugged in. In principal, there should be at least 4 ports active I'd think, you's just have to figure out which side of the input header (the 5 pin or the 4 pin side) activates the mobo style headers. Oh and it requires a separate 12 volt power supply (it comes with a molex adapter). If the FPGA takes 12 volts too, you could probably tap into the psu used by it.

Make sure to use a powered USB hub... the amperage coming out of the MiSTer micro USB can be insufficient if you have demanding devices.

At first sight the poster looked suspiciously like a NeXT slab… I guess it's probably as cute :-) You may want to solder pin headers near the board instead of the wires directly to make it easier to unplug things later on… As for DIY backplates, 3D-printing probably isn't the optimal way, I'd think more about laser-cutting for this. Of course it's not as widely available as a 3D printer yet. You'll want to check your local hackerspace (cf. wiki.hackerspaces.org/List_of_Hackerspaces & hackaday.io/hackerspaces ) or fablab ;-) Expansion brackets are also probably a good candidate for laser-cutting, although there are restrictions on metals you can laser-cut…

Hey Neil, Great build! 👍 Couple of suggestions: Why didn't you mount the MiSTer up side down over the PSU fan grille? There are plenty of case stand offs in the area for a 3D printed bracket. Might help cooling? Also rather than soldering power directly to the PCB why not use a female barrel jack on the bare end of your power cable? Also, maybe you could use an SD Card Slot extender and 3D print a facia for the floppy drive bay

Changing your 3D printer build surface can cause new problems i.e. adhesion. I would definitely recommend getting a BLTouch or something similar, it's one of the two best things I've added to my Ender 3 (the other is a new mainboard with silent stepper motor drivers). With the BLTouch I can just start a print and walk away, knowing everything will be ok.

soldered the DC Socket directly to the Mister Board ... why not use a plug everything else is plugged in. The USB Sockets could be directly soldered to the USB Hub. I dont get the Audio Socket Plate you printed ... why not use the Holes with Screws? Its just a friction fit now. Everything is black but you printed it in grey? There is some inconsistency i must say but interesting Project thanks for sharing :)

Love the build! Despite my extraordinarily bad electronic and metal work skills, I'm just about up and running with a case of my own. I still need to sort out the LEDs, too. misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=823. The HCT hex inverter arrived today, so the next step is to produce a simple pcb for it. My main regrets were grinding off one or two too many stand-offs, not putting a supply inside the case; and not doing a neater job with the d-type holes - so that I could have mounted the sockets from the inside. Oh, and not getting the analogue IO board from the start. I don't have a CRT in the house at the moment but it's surely only a matter of time now... I've grounded to the case since the pics were taken. Thanks for that! :-) Off to google for new-old monitor stock...

Oh wow, seeing that Gateway monitor brings back memories... Not GOOD ones, mind you, but it definitely brings back memories... :-p Any particular reason you chose to go with an Amiga case? I would get it more if you used the Mister to emulate an A500 or something, but as a general emulation box meant to do many systems? Is it just a nostalgia case where you personally associate with that form, or is there something more that I’m unaware of re: Amiga and the Emulation scene?

My mister is a little smaller. In a LaCie vertical hard drive enclosure, no analog board, usb hub mounted with hot snot to backplate, a few drilled holes, and use of a hacksaw and its spot on. Swapped the existing led on front for a bi colour one, and connect through a resistor to 3.3V and LED connections on the GPIO, a nice activity light. You can run the fan off the 3.3V, much quieter and the FPGA doesnt get any hotter.

I'm not sure if it's mentioned already (I scrolled a bit and gave up looking), but NZXT makes a powered internal USB hub with pinouts for those brackets. I'd route the type a ports up front, and you're set. Being powered it addresses any drain on the board, and its design removes several cables/dongles from the signal path. www.nzxt.com/products/internal-usb-hub
