@RUMA I really don't think it's on the same scale tho and DEFINITELY not irl. I'm autistic and yeah I see a couple people say they have it but within a week 2 a month they get bored. However it comes 2 adhd (which I also have, fun combo I know /S) people lie about it a lot more frequently and it crosses over into the real world.

As a woman with both autism and ADHD, it was so refreshing to see someone take a stand against the “faking neurodiversity because it’s trendy” attitude. You have both my subscription and my respect, happy to join the Reezys P.S. My own personal unpopular opinion is that it’s fine to make content about what it’s like being neurodivergent such as your “ADHD moments,” but ONLY if you yourself actually have it and are willing to put in the work to explain it. Hell my goal with my RU-vid channel is to center it around life with autism and ADHD, but I also don’t plan on it all being just “LOL I got distracted on camera!”

About the ADHD thing. I completely agree with you. As someone who has ADHD, I see people going around and being like “I have an F in math, I have such ADHD!” While I’m standing there almost crying because I can’t seem to be in control of myself. Like, no, your not failing your class because you have ADHD, your failing because your talking with your friends. Not only is the ADHD trend clearly offensive to those who do have it, it can also be extremely misleading to young people growing up using these platforms. If a young kid who maybe doesn’t get good grades because they often get distracted in class goes on tiktok and is told “being distracted sometimes means you have ADHD” what does that do to them? They legit just believe they have a mental disability without knowing the majority of what it actually is. So crazy.

1. Love your shirt 2. YES to more POC creators 3. Thank you for saying what so many are thinking. Depression ain't cute - it does not make me quirky, it makes it hard to get out of bed sometimes and difficult to find joy in normal activities. I don't have ADHD but I'm sure my friends who do would prefer to be free of it. We should be talking about mental health so it's not stigmatized, but making it a cute trend is not helpful. That simply causes it to go from being stigmatized to being cliché. Either option will cause people who need help to not seek it or will downplay it. 4. You're hilarious. That is all ❤️

I agree except for the self diagnosis thing, as someone who was professionally diagnosed. At least in the autistic community, a lot of people acknowledge that a.) there are tons of factors why diagnosis is inaccessible (class, gender, race, etc. For example, many autistic women and women with ADHD don't get diagnosed till WAY later just because they're women. And it's even worse if you're poor or a person of color.) And B.) many people who do self diagnose put a LOT of research into it and even ask friends with these disabilities what they think. There are medical experts that have literally said "I haven't met a single self diagnosed person who wasn't right", and oftentimes, self diagnosis is the first step to getting professionally diagnosed. I know that for me, had I not researched ADHD on my own before going to a doctor, I never would have suspected I had it and I would still be struggling and beating myself up over things I can't control. Of course, just seeing a TikTok trend and pretending you have it for clout is a different story, but if self diagnosis helps people get the support they need, especially marginalized people who don't have access to resources, then I have no problem with it.

"ADHD is a trend" I wanna make a slight correction: Mental illnesses have become a trend. Many people fake things such as DID and not only blame their DID when they partake in controversial actions, but they pretend its a quirky thing. There are even people who fake Tourettes and when they "tic" they laugh it off. This could just be me, but it's almost like they are laughing at the illness as if there aren't people who struggle with it every day and have gotten hurt because of their tics. Not only does it sadly spread misinformation about the illness, but people also use this misinformation and accuse people who actually have such illness to be lying. There are even accounts dedicated to "Getting your favorite mental illness". It's honestly really unfortunate how insensitive people can be about such a serious illness.

before i start, not accusing u of fakeclaiming people, this is just my personal experience. as someone in a DID system and with Tics, i dont know if i agree with that statement, i laugh off my tics because thats how i cope. some days they can be really painful, not just to me but to others and if i sit there and wallow in my sadness, nothing gets better but if i laugh them off and get on with my day, i dont feel as sad or upset, but i do agree that some people fake them JUST to laugh at the disorders, or to hurt people/say things and not get in trouble for it. and for the DID claim, you dont have a right to say whether or not someone is faking, whether you have the disorder or not because frankly you aren’t their therapist or psychiatrist, you dont know who they are or what they’ve been through. and i wont stop you from questioning whether or not someone is faking but dont fake claim a system because if they arent faking, you’re taking their life (in which theyve already suffered enough trauma) and making it so much worse than it has to be.

The thing about adhd becoming a trend is, as someone who has been recently diagnosed with ADHD, it gives me this massive feeling if imposter syndrome. I start to think, "what if I'm just using it as an excuse? Am I following a trend? Am I overexagerating my symptoms?" I really hate going anywhere near adhd tiktok at this point because it's gotten to the point where it's almost becoming invalidating to be in that space. It's insulting that people think that ADHD is a quirky personality trait when in fact, for people like me, it is the reason why I get turned down for promotions because it's almost physically impossible for me to submit simple paperwork on time (this genuinely happened to me recently) It's an incredibly frustrating disorder to live with, and I do not really find it cute or quirky at all :/

This may sound kinda weird but idc anyway cuz it's been rubbing off my chest for quite a while now. With the ADHD thing, I sometimes feel like I'm "stuck in the same place" like I don't see myself living up to my potential. I also focus on like one particular thing until everything else just drifts away like my family and friends. Even getting the time to eat isn't there anymore because I'm either just easily distracted or I'm too stressed. Yes people procrastinate a lot but it has got to a point where I have problems completing tasks on time which resulted in me failing on most of my subjects AND having a low frustration tolerance doesn't help either. My parents would always compare me to other girls my age which really lowered my self-esteem and made it harder for me to take risks in friendships, relationships and my education. My friend thinks it's just an "introverted thing" and that I shouldn't think too much about it. There's other things about myself that bother me a lot like impulsiveness or losing things every 30 fucking seconds but that could just be me idk if it's an ADHD thing :/

I'm an artist/writer, or at least try to be, and I've found myself stretched so thinly between all the different ideas I've come up with that I end up not finishing anything at all. When I try to focus, my mind catches on something else, and hours will pass before I remember the original thing I was supposed to do. Procrastination, at this point, is no longer a shortcoming, it's a must for me. I'm late to everything. I don't want to do anything, and sometimes I want to do everything. It's like I'm stuck in an endless loop, and meanwhile, time is just ticking on, and I feel like I'm wasting it each day.

ADHD is the new "OCD". Just because you like things to be neat and tidy, or you like to do things in a particular way doesn't mean you have OCD. Just because you get distracted sometimes or have a hard time with organization doesn't mean you have ADHD. These are real disorders that people suffer from and we need to have sympathy and not try to diminish their struggle. It's like seeing someone in a wheelchair and saying "I know how you feel. I was once on a bus for 16 hours."

I agree with you on basically everything. The ADHD thing hit different though. As someone who was actually diagnosed it's super annoying. My ADHD has effected me in so many negative ways. It really disappoints me when we are in f**kin 2022 and people are still saying, "Oh look a squirrel" in reference to ADHD. It's not some quirky personality trait that makes you fidget and day dream. We aren't some dumb main character in 2000's disney movie who sits at school day dreaming about butterflies, okay? We are real people who constantly get told that we're just lazy while we are hyper fixating or physically not being able to focus to the point where things can just get jumbled up and nothing makes sense. It can also cause you to forget to do the everyday things you HAVE to do. Like eating. I've said this multiple times but ADHD is the best and worst thing for me. The best part only being the fact that I'm ✨Creative✨ but the worst part is a huge list for instance is sprouted my eating disorder, it causes me to not be able to focus at times no matter how hard I try to, etc.

self diagnosis is not the problem imo, because self diagnosis is what leads many people to pursue a professional diagnosis, and a lot of people who self diagnose put research into it. (it's also one of the few options for people who don't have the resources to get professionally diagnosed). The biggest problem is just neurotypical people making a game of it and treating it like it's a silly quirky thing and infantilizing / trivializing the struggles. Which I don't think is the same thing.

Honestly I'm autistic and I use the word as a compliment because I've learned over the years to appreciate traits and experiences that come with our neurodivergence, as well as ways to cope with or help in areas that I struggle with more because of it. And so many of my friends are as well and the levels of compassion, passion, and interesting things they know are just incomparable to neurotypical people. Obviously yes it's a disability for me because holy crap the world was not designed to be friendly to us. Being seen as weird or rude, having our needs or stims seen as annoying or unimportant, the levels of sensory stimulation we have to deal with in public spaces (screw fluorescent lighting and music playing in stores, and some of the colors and textures of decorations and floors 😩) but I don't think it would be a disability in a culture where it's accepted and accommodated for. Like if I grew up in an Anishinaabe tribe pre-colonization, they believed that these differences are strengths and that it was the duty of the community to help others with things that they struggled with. I would have made an amazing plant medicine gatherer and eventually be very good at making medicines and treating people because I soak up information like a sponge when I'm interested, feel very at peace in nature, love helping people, and am great at searching for and finding things like specific plants because my pattern recognition is strong and being overly sensitive to smells, visual input, and sounds means that I notice more details than most people. And this isn't me trying to romanticise autism or the precolonial Native way of life. I've listened to and spoken with knowledge keepers and medicine people in the culture who have told me about how it was believed that every disease had a natural cure, but disabilities and neurodivergencies like adhd, autism, intellectual disability, and such things are not diseases but rather a part of what makes that person who they are and things which should get the extra support they need rather than dismissing a person as useless or worth less and such things that are common beliefs today. And I'm also pretty good at learning about and using medicinal plants in today's modern age, so I know I could have done it then as well. And that's not to say that Aboriginal people were objectively better or to put them on a pedestal, because there are many examples throughout history and around the world of disabled people, whether physically or mentally, being accepted and cared for. There was a skeleton found of a girl in her late teens who lived thousands and thousands of years ago whose bones showed signs of being born with a disability which would have needed round the clock care, which meant that for many years there were people who cared for her constantly and valued her. And the part that makes me tear up is that they also found that she had many cavities which was incredibly unusual for a person who lived back then, especially a young person, because they weren't eating a lot of sugary sweet things that cause cavities. So based on all of the evidence, archeologists concluded that her family must have often fed her dates and other sweet plants that grew in the region, almost certainly just because it made her happy. Anyway all that to say that I really do think that we wouldn't struggle all that much if we actually got the care and support we need and didn't have to deal with the information and sensory overload that is so prevalent today. I really don't get it when autistic is used as an insult, but I guess some people feel the need to devalue and put people who aren't like them or they don't understand down in order to feel better about themselves. Autism has never been a morally bad thing, it also doesn't affect intelligence as many people seem to think but is rather a developmental, social, and sensory processing disorder. It's common for autistic people to also have intellectual disorders, but even then there is nothing that makes a person who is intellectually disabled inherently less valuable than someone who isn't. The stigma is ridiculous and I am so damn happy that the r word isn't seen as socially acceptable anymore. I just hope that one day people will see us as humans with autonomy, strengths and weaknesses, emotions, and value.

Because of all of the memes and trolls of people saying that they're depressed just makes me want to hide. as someone who has ADHD, i can PROMISE you, that's NOT how ADHD looks when it "hits." it usually looks more like someone randomly interrupting themselves and switching to another topic (or several) or suddenly getting really quiet and looking off into the distance, and you can tell from their eyes that they're just completely gone. their face might also look sullen or bored. the only way I can possibly believe somebody would look up and smile like that (minus the suddenly grabbing at air floaties) is if there was a TV behind the camera that was on and a scene came on that amused the person making the video. we don't suddenly adopt this infantile personality "when the ADHD hits." we still remain adults.

The ADHD, anxiety, and depression trend thing is totally true. I was diagnosed with all three when I was younger, and it is a daily struggle. ADHD isn't drifting off like you're dumb, depression isn't being sad or lazy, anxiety isn't rocking back and forth. It's so, so much deeper than that, and seeing others in my generation making it a trend. There are so many sides to even the most common mental illnesses. If all these people want mental health issues so bad, I guarantee everyone who truly struggles like myself would say the same thing. Take mine.

Comparing the latest “ADHD trend” to Tumblr’s obsession with anxiety and depression is spot on. The absolute worse part of that trend are the “Things you didn’t know were ADHD” shorts, which almost always contain vague problems EVERYONE has, and makes ADHD seem like a quirk and not the disorder it really is. As someone with ADHD, I can say it affects every part of my life, from being physically unable to do simple chores due to executive disfunction to having difficulty socializing to struggling to be fiscally responsible. It’s not fun, and in a lot of cases it’s not taken seriously because people think it’s just a “personal problem” which these videos are confirming.

YES!! And when you suddenly show signs of ADHD, you’re “lazy” when in reality, I can barely focus on any of the most simple chores like taking out the trash. For example, I could be like “hey the trash is full!! Gotta take it out right now” and then when I think of something else immediately after, I only remember when THROWING SOMETHING OUT and that has been going on for a week. That’s just one singular example, but god when it happens constantly with SO many things I feel like I’m not a capable person and haha wow my self esteem is super low because of this disorder : / sorry this is more of a rant, but just… they think it’s a quirky thing until they see the actual severe “non fun” symptoms. Or, in many cases, when they see the ACTUAL symptoms because a lot of these symptoms in videos like that are just… normal or just don’t make sense.

@oildraws8737
@oildraws8737 2 года назад
@@lilautieunicorn6632 this is true but in those videos defense, ADHD and autism do actually share a lot of similar symptoms, this is coming from someone trying to get a diagnosis for both things so I've been reading a lot about both the last two months. People don't think of ADHD and autism as being similar at all since like oh ADHD = ✨quirky✨ and can't pay attention and shit like that while autism = weird and "dumb baby disease" (do not understand the infantilization of autistic people but whatever) But in reality a lot of stuff like sensory overload, executive dysfunction, hyperfixations can actually b pretty similar for ADHD and autism, although there are differences to look for. I think what makes me mad about that though is that despite how extremely common it is for ADHD and autism to exist as comorbid disorders, having both at the same time makes it exponentially harder to get diagnosed with either. Like how is there not a proper diagnostic criteria for people who have both- and don't get me started on how hard it is for women to get diagnosed with either ADHD or autism because they just never made an actual diagnostic criteria for women :/ like a whole one half of the population,, even tho those things present differently in women. But yea those videos are so fucking wack like "do you dislike doing homework,, that's an ADHD trait" like??? Mfer who has ever liked doing hw :/

As someone with diagnosed ADHD for all my 17 years of life, it really hurts how much people downplay ADHD to “you can’t focus and are hyper”. A lot of us (especially me) tend to lose motivation/get burnout fast even for the hobbies I love, and I’m more prone to bottling my emotions, which is not good considering emotional regulation for ADHD is sucky. Question. So I've been told by multiple people that have ADHD that I share similar symptoms with them all and that I probably do have it as well and they recommended me to get tested. I've also seen multiple people say that BPD and ADHD share a lot of symptoms. I do have BPD, but I haven't been diagnosed with ADHD. How can you tell the difference between the two and how do you go about bringing up being tested to someone who's against any kind of mental differences that aren't "ideal"?
@AislingAngell
@AislingAngell 2 года назад
@@respectthejibooty9542 talk about it with your therapist/psychiatrist and get an assessment. Go over the symptoms and see what you relate to - as someone with BPD and ADHD all you can really do is research the types of ADHD, see the symptoms and see if anything clicks. For me adhd has always been a large part of my life and has significantly impacted my grades. ADHD also has specifically rejection sensitive dysphoria, which I recommend looking up too because it's similar to BPD symptoms, however something that was really obviously to me with rsd is it's the jump from: I messed up -> sudden suicidal thoughts. The difference from bpd is, these thoughts were present before BPD diagnosis and have been constant all my life. Not everyone with ADHD has rsd but I think it's a really underlooked symptom. I recommend looking up ADHD Instagram accounts, they post helpful things for identifying and relating to symptoms :) I hope that helped lol otherwise I'm going to cry

I know I am a smart person if I stay on task and can plan accordingly. ADHD isn’t “oh wow look at that over there! Disabilities, even mental ones, affect almost every aspect of your life. It's not something you happen to have, it shapes your behavior and it's something you have to adjust to because it will never go away. I explained to my math teacher that ADHD makes it hard to do my homework as fast as everyone else, or suddenly know answers I should have memorized, and the girl behind me goes "just get medicated" as if ADHD was a sickness with a cure.

As someone with ADHD (diagnosed) and for someone to use it for clout makes me really upset its not fair for people to have "undiagnosed ADHD" I also have OCD and alot of people be like 'oh sorry i have major OCD everything has to be perfect or esle i see red" like no its not like that its so much worse its over-checking, over-stressing and much more but its not just being neat.

"Nothing feels genuine anymore" that HIT. I think that's why so many of us are drawn to YT, because we can actually make money being ourselves in a world that tries desperately to keep us from doing so. I think that dream draws in so many people because the system is such a joke. Others just want the fame and money, but some just want to be their selves and find a way out. wishing you all the best this world has to offer queen

As a non-ADHD, no psychology/mental health degree holder, I can agree that ADHD isn't a trend and doesn't "hit" at certain moments. Just common sense 🙃 it's so gross how people think labeling themselves is edgy and using it for an excuse and to gain attention... Same goes for all these people on tiktok making being a psychopath or a sociopath an edgy personality trait

For our health class, the teacher made us watch this sort of documentary?? It’s called “social dilemma” and it talks about the ways online platforms get you to stay addicted to the app. And people who actually worked for those platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, etc. tell us so much more. It honestly kinda scared me knowing how much our world changed because of these.

The worst thing that happened to tv shows is it going from 22 episodes with a 43 minute episode per week to an 8 episode season that drop in the same day. It was so exciting with shows like Pretty Little liars and The Vampire Diaries, to watch an episode and have a full week to digest it, create theories, and actually take in what happened. With shows that drop all episodes together I can't even tell the episodes apart because we all just binge it...and then we have to wait more than a year to just get another eight episodes that we will all watch in a day again

As a person who suffers from ADHD it’s very disrespectful and disgusting to see people pretending to have it. It’s not something to joke about and it’s not “quirky”. ADHD means attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which means you lose focus, zone out, your mind is always racing and you can never find peace within your mind.

They are trying to make it an ''original'' personality bcz everybody are the same on tiktok. My psychiatrist told me I have anxiety and I can tell you it's very difficult to handle. Imagine how I feel about the ppl who got ADHD/depression etc... it's the last thing on earth I want to have.☹ it's like saying ''I got a cancer 🥳😣💖😽😿😜'' just for clout and attention when ppl actually got this. (Also can you rate my English on /10 I'm still learning)

The "youtube is boring" thing started with me recently. I used to spend all my time on here interested in what I watch, but now I can't find actual entertaining videos... I think the difference is I used to actively search for things I was interested in, but now I grew out of those things and basically just depend on recommendations (which are awful with lazy content).

As someone who suffers with actual adhd I appreciate your call out on this BS. On the one hand I am grateful to see more neuro-atypical situations being normalized and 'accepted' via exposure but on the other, it's being simultaneously dramatized and trivialized. Im glad to see mental health being represented in some cases, and disappointed to see it made fun of in the same breath.
