Took my 24/1.8S out on a walkabout in nature today. Grey overcast. Moist. Deciduous trees barren, occasional conifers still green, lush green grass and lots of moss with an exceptional bright green color. The lens is crisp and very sharp (on a Z 7), excellent on all levels (I switched all in-camera optical lens corrections "off"). Wow. And the bokeh is beautiful. So now with 24, 35, 50 and 85 all 1.8S, I can only say my pet peeves with the F glass are about all gone.

Interesting choice of lenses, I typically go with a 35mm 85mm combo if the venue is normal, if it is challenging or I expect a lot of issues I have the 24-70 2.8 and F mount 70-200mm. For dancing and candids I switch to mainly a 50mm. I have the 14-30 I plan on using for a few shots, but I have never liked an f4. I find an f4 vs a 1.8 or faster prime, the 1.8 lets in more light allowing for better focus in low light, plus in many venues subject separation is important. A lot of reception halls are not photogenic, so when the place is cluttered, blowing out the background is nice. I am going to take the z50 and put the 85 on to see how it looks, I love the compression of a 135mm but don't use it enough to spend the money. I moved from Canon, so I am not familiar with the vintage choices on Nikon, I have no problem with a MF lens. I might go that route.

Another great insider video Will. This gives us a great view of a pro photographer breaking down gear choices and shows us that pro photographers equipment selection is fluid and changes over time due to changing technology, equipment requirements, and services offered to their customers. That improvised “tilt shift” method you displayed is very intriguing bro! I would love to see a follow up video on that my friend! Thanks again Will for another great video!

Consider a suction cup and a magic arm with a super clamp. When you have a smooth surface to mount the suction cup, you have nothing on the floor that people can stumble over, block, etc.

The small Manfrotto stand has taller siblings. I have some 6 or 8 of these small (7') ones and a bunch of the 12' ones. In my studio, the 12' ones support two backgrounds with a 4m (13') crossbar each - all mobile. These stands, when you have a couple of them can be connected/locked together because the 3 legs fold into a flat plane. I also have dedicated bags with them. The 7' leave space in the 90cm long bag so you could put a pouch with superclamps and accessories in that space. The 12' has 4 sections and - as all these tripods are aluminum and light - cannot hold a lot of weight. I have two 3'x4' softboxes. that can easily go on these if you do not slide out the last section. With one of these big softboxes, I use a parallelogram arm with counterweight that allows me to move the softbox up and down without having to alter its angle settings and at about 7' extension the 12' version holds that big thing as well. (Manfrotto: MA1004BAC 12', MA1005BAC 9', MA1051BAC 7' - air cushioned and stackable when folded down.)

Hi - Why is the black rapid better than a peak design strap. It seems to have one connection under the camera body instead of two at the sides for peak design - if your doing a video pan isn't the peak design better.

You read my mind bro. My kit still reflects when I shot weddings all the time. Pelican 1510 and a think tank roller = massive pain in the ass. Great bags, very thankful I have them. But dragging them around the city WITH 4 13’ manfrotto stackers was miserable. Def looking at a much lighter footprint as I manly use my Z6 with a prime nowadays.

When you have been in the military (or building construction), you are familiar with the tool belt. Imagine a belt like that, with shoulder straps (called harness). Now imagine a camera strap with metal eyelets in it that you can attach to the harness. And the harness actually supports two cameras that will never bump into each other when hung at different heights. And imagine a couple lens pouches that you mount on the belt. In the swift action that a wedding requires from us, you now have two hands free when necessary and each lens has its pouch, so lens swaps are a breeze. Nothing to put down on the floor or a table. Nothing to hold open. Just shoot, swap, shoot. No, it does not look elegant and I would not wear it over my gentleman's MTO (suit but I could).

I finally got my Z6 and I’m trying to figure out what to do with the kit lens 24-70 f4. I was thinking of trading it toward the 85 f1.8 but I think I’d rather have two native lens for the z6 and instead trade in some other gear, namely my D700 (I have a D800) and a D5600. Did you keep the 24-70 f4?
@jimlafferty
@jimlafferty 4 года назад
The 24-70 is actually not bad. Check out its close focusing. My only gripe is the focus ring should be toward the end of the barrel for manual focus - it so close to the body it’s tough using it, or connecting a follow focus motor.

I now am enjoying my Z6 and appreciate all of your videos. This one raised a question for me. What drove you to make switch to all mirrorless? Now that we are adding things like the additional grip because it "fits better in our hands" I guess the weight and size argument fades away?. I image you have already addressed this question, but I am still rationalizing my decision :) . I sold my D500 for a Z6 and so far have kept my D850. Thank you for our outstanding content and "telling it like it is" approach. I cannot imagine keeping up with the wedding schedule you guys keep. Thank you

Just like to second the recommendations on the stands and stand bag. Did a wedding with the stands at the weekend and they are so much easier to move around, I could carry 3 at once, One with a ad600 plus soft box and 2 with ad200’s mounted to them! Bit more difficult to put down on uneven ground or grass than on a hard floor but still easier than normal stands. I should stop watching as this dude costs me too much money but it’s all good advice :)

Great set up! However I would also recommend to take a look at nikkor 105/2 DC and 135/2 (or2.8?) DC. Those are special lenses, and considering your artistic approach to the photography, I bet you would love the picture, the bokeh, the special character (sharp but smooth) on both of them as well as Defocus Control function. First used the 105 /2 with D700 (like you, really love this camera and it's colors) and boy, was it an amazing set! But with Z6 I literally rediscovered this lens and it's DC function. The bokeh is just crazy! Miss auto focus sometimes though but it's a minor concern

Wow, that seems like a lot of gear for a wedding. You must change your lenses fast like a formula 1 pit stop changes tires. Otherwise I imagine some great moments will be missed since things happen fast and you have no control over the event. If I were to shoot a wedding I would have a 24-70 F2.8 on one camera and a 50 F1.8 on another. No lens changing just camera swapping.
@anthonyc1883
@anthonyc1883 4 года назад
"If you were to shoot a wedding" you'd be sorely missing something longer than the 70mm. You're going to want to get a tight shot of the couple at the altar (or wherever) and you simply are going to intrude if you don't have a 70-200 2.8. And, there are other scenes for something longer than the 70mm focal length, too.
@anthonyc1883
@anthonyc1883 4 года назад
Did you not see how the host showed his Black Rapid strap system, which allows him to wear two bodies at the same time, each with different focal length lenses? Plus, his wife also has two camera bodies with different focal length lenses attached. So where are you getting the impression he is changing lenses like a Formula 1 pit crew?
@dsoprano13
@dsoprano13 4 года назад
@@anthonyc1883 He listed more lenses than bodies so some lens changing will happen. Simple math. I thought about a longer zoom but if it's 2 ppl then the other photographer could shoot with those.
@anthonyc1883
@anthonyc1883 4 года назад
Yes, “simple math’” but it’s extremely common for photographers at virtually any event to have more lenses than bodies. News, sports, weddings, etc. At a wedding, there’s many well-known breaks in the action in which a photographer can pause and change out a lens or two. Before the cake is cut, before the speeches are given, before the first dance, etc. My point remains that a photographer with instant access to two bodies, one with a shorter lens mounted and one with a longer lens mounted, is ready for anything when there’s continuous activity. When it’s time to take the ring pictures, or when the wedding party is assembling for their formal pose outside the venue or inside at the altar, etc., there is reasonable time er for the photographer to swap out a lens.

Now that the Z6 can shoot ProRes RAW over HDMI to the Ninja V - is it worth it for Weddings? I don’t shoot weddings (no time) but I have been asked to tag along to shoot video (if I have time) and I’ve only shot HD onto the XQD and turn it over to the primary guy. But I’m not seeing any value tethering the Z6 to a Ninja to get 4K ProRes RAW if the output is really for personal use... smartphone screens, tablets... the largest being a monitor for Once and Done (unless they make it to a significant anniversary or have kids) I’m thinking it’s entirely sufficient to shoot 1080p for 90% of the weddings being shot. (I bought into the ProRes RAW because I am shooting in a studio with actors where I need that little extra latitude for exposure and color and my actors understand that I need to setup my tripods and slider and lights... and Digital / Audio recorders tethered to my camera(s) and audio mics.

@TheGeoDaddy
@TheGeoDaddy 4 года назад
The Monochrome Memoirs: I already bought into the Filmmaker’s Kit and got my Z6 upgraded, so I’m ready to R&R next weekend with my first ProRes RAW shoots.. I guess (since I’ve only delivered the XQD video and saw some FCPX results over my smartphone..) what is the Wedding Videorgapher’s final output? Is it 4K that sits on some hosting site? Do couples expect 4K? The three weddings I added some video shooting for was all shot/delivered in 1080p HD but I’m helping out a couple of local shooters who only shoot a few a year... definitely NOT making a living at it! Is 4K the deliverable standard expected? If so, then I would assume that Wedding Videographers need to mount the Ninja V on their Moza or Zhiyun gimbals to shoot ProRes (which I found mounting my Z6 on the Moza Air time consuming and inconsistently stable... even w/o the Ninja tethered to it!)

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs That's true, it doesn't fit with your lenses. I'm really on the fence! lol I've got a wedding on Saturday so going to try the z6 a bit and have a think after that. The big thing for me is switching lenses, I've got really good 24-70 and 70-200 2.8's so buying the z versions would sting a bit! lol Saying that, I picked up the z 24-70s f4 really cheap recently and have to say it's very nice and can see me using it a fair bit. My big worry is what Nikon is going to do next. I hear their "pro" mirrorless will have the 60mp sony sensor in it and I really don't want or need that size sensor. Slows editing, eats up storage and will need bigger (even more expensive) cards. Don't want to switch systems if that's the direction they are taking. Damn looks like the price went up since I bought mine! Just checked and it’s $55 on amazon. Still a killer deal though

Hello, I have an issue with my Z6 and I was hoping that you could help me... I mostly shoot JPEG, but today I tried out shooting in RAW and well, I noticed that I can't load the files to my mac. I don't have a card reader, so I use the USB-cable which woks just fine for JPEG, but apparently ignores the RAW files. Do you have any ideas about what I could be doing wrong? Thank you so much in advance and keep up the great work, you are an inspiration for many of us!

Hey man let me look a little deeper into this and get back to you. Haven’t experienced this as I use a card reader

Are you importing your photos using Lightroom or are you dumping them directly from the camera to a folder? It sounds more like a Mac problem and not a Z6 problem. Try changing your view on your Mac to list view (vs icon view) and see if they show up.
@novembergold4144
@novembergold4144 4 года назад
@@uxo2255 well, to be honest, I don't have lightroom yet... I load them directly into "photos", which is also the only possibility since the camera doesn't show up on the desktop. Do I need lightroom to download the raw-files? I will try getting a card reader, see if it changes. For now, I'll keep shooting jpeg, I'm doing this for hobby and really like these files. Thanks for your reply!

@@novembergold4144 as of 2018 (Mojave) the Z6 raw files are shown to be compatible to Mac support.apple.com/en-us/HT208967. I do believe that Lightroom would be able to import the files. You should go to adobe and download a Lightroom trial and see if it works before you buy.

If you are using Mac OS Catalina 10.15.2 or 3, the connected camera no longer shows up in the finder which is a real bummer. Nor can you shoot tethered in Lightroom anymore (till theses things are fixed!).

Upgrade those triggers! Group buttons on top and the dial moved to the left hand will make you wonder why you waited.
