waking up early is essential for my selfcare too honestly. I feel best when I can do all the chores i struggle with (due to adhd) like eating proper meals, shower, do dishes in peace with lots of time to get distracted without feeling bad or stressed about it. I know it sounds counter intuitive that the biggest part of selfcare is chores but for me that is taking literal care of my physical self… which i struggle with a lot.. which makes me feel better mentally in the end since i can see these small accomplishments and feel good about them.
@KelliMarissa

Honestly I think self care is such a personal thing, it can look different for everyone! Cleaning is definitely a self care thing for me because I feel so much more relaxed when my home is clean and tidy so I totally get that!

That's pretty awesome. In my self love journey, I have had to learn how to do things that seem simple for other people. I have to be specific and intentional with my chores from which ones I do to what time of day I do them. It's great that you found something that works for you.

I also have ADHD. I know getting up and doing things like this (small chores, too) would be so helpful for me, but I struggle SO much with getting out of bed. I just don’t want to do it even though I know getting up, turning my alarm off and not getting up and snoozing it and going back to bed, and not looking at my phone in bed would be so beneficial. I just … haven’t figured it out just yet.

For anyone interested in cuticle remover, that one Kelli showed, Sally Hansen, is the most benign remover on the market as far as I know. I use it almost every single time I do a new manicure, upwards of a minute because it's so tame. All it does is remove cuticle, (the dead skin that comes out underneath the nail fold), it doesn't remove the nail fold or damage it. It doesn't burn. Nor does it really help you push the nail fold back. It doesn't give you a russian manicure. It wasn't presented here in a very good light but it's loads better than scraping at the nail roughly to remove the extra dead skin and it's very safe.
@BrittMFH
@BrittMFH 2 года назад
I totally agree. I can leave it on forever with no damage. It softens the dead skin in the nail so it is removable. 👍
@JamieCannon
@JamieCannon 2 года назад
I agree, I don't find it very harsh and haven't had any issues from using it - for example if my polish was on for a while and I wasn't pushing the cuticles back (I'm not sure about everyone else but I find this difficult to do when my polish is holding strong).

My most recent discovery for my cutical health is using Vaseline before removing my polish. I read and do skincare daily, and those are my most consistent things. Ido my makeup and paint my nails multiple times a week too. I think of those more as creative expression, but I think that's also how I care for me.

Jojoba oil is said to be the closest to our skin's natural oils so I think that's the big reason why cuticle oils that are predominantly jojoba oil (first ingredient) absorb so nicely. I haven't tried everything out there and I know there are some that are highly recommended, but my favourite cuticle oil is the one I make myself with mostly jojoba oil, a little argan oil (when I have some on hand), and some vitamin e, and I often add just a couple drops of rosemary essential oil cause I love the smell and it's supposed to be good for nails. Super easy to make and customize and a small bottle of jojoba oil will last a long time making your own cuticle oil.

I put on cuticle oil, without massaging it in, before I remove my polish. It works as a "buffer" between my nails and the remover. My nails are much happier now.

I just started caring for my hands and nails in January, I'm 66 and I have to say my hands look better now then they did 20 years ago. I like Cuticle Buddy oil, I have one attached to my purse and on the table next to my recliner. Orly has a great Cuticle Therapy Cream it's in a 2 oz jar, I've had it at lease 6-8 months use it daily it's still 1/3 full, a little goes a long way. Great video, I need this type to remind me to do self care. Thank you Kelli. by the way I am up to about 300 polishes and I blame you for this hobby/obsession's. 😀

I bought those nail files a few years ago when you recommended them and love them. A key practice that has helped me is keeping a file, a hand lotion and a cuticle product at each place at home and at work where I spend the most time (plus my purse). This way they are always at the ready. I love the idea of keeping a lotion at each sink. Have been working to make rubber gloves a habit for dishes and cleaning. And finally, a sunscreen stick for the backs of your hands.

I've tried the Cuccio Milk & Honey cuticle oil, but I find that it makes my cuticles drier and "addicted" to the cuticle oil, needing more and more to avoid drying out. I've since switched to just pure jojoba oil, and it works beautifully, absorbing quickly and moisturizing my cuticles for a long time without drying out worse afterwards.
@juliar332
@juliar332 2 года назад
I agree. I felt the same way about the Cuccio milk and honey. I'm much happier using pure jojoba oil. I buy a big bottle of jojoba oil and transfer some of it into a dropper bottle to use as cuticle oil.
@ILuvAyeAye
@ILuvAyeAye 2 года назад
It's much less expensive too. Some people find jojoba oil too runny, so you can also buy a small container of Vitamin E oil, and combine them to your preference. But I like jojoba by itself best.

@violetviolet888 2 года назад
KijinSeija: after the jojoba oil has soaked in, top with an occlusive like lanolin (brand name example Bag Balm) or petrolatum (brand name example Vaseline). It will seal in the oil so it lasts longer and works even better.

So helpful to have this nail care step routine. I absolutely hate messing with my cuticles! I have had horrible experiences going to salons so I do my own manis/pedis. In all honesty, I think I have a bit of anxiety with cuticles now so I will start following your advice on after shower nail maintenance and applying more cuticle oil. I have to constantly use sanitizer and gloves due to work. I like to keep my nails shorter and makes it easier to not have to clip and just file. I did get a glass nail file as you’ve mentioned and it does help. Thanks again Kelli Marissa! Once again, your videos are appreciated more than you know…have a good one🌸

The lotion I love and have been using for a few years is the Vasoline Intensive Care for hands and nails. It keeps my hands soft and moisturized & is fairly inexpensive. I have been in love with the cuticle oil From Bliss Kiss! Been using it for over a year and it's been doing wonders, far less breaks especially during the cold winter months.

Glock Girl, if your nails are peeling, you need to work on repairing the structure of the nailplate. Also, there is a difference between glass and crystal nail files. Kelli does not mention that her Germanikure file is crystal which is a much higher quality than glass. Use a nail oil like jojoba oil with vitamin E or Bliss Kiss every time after you wash your hands and every night before you go to bed for two months. Your nails will be healthier than ever.

As someone with very dry skin, I always put cerave healing ointment and cotton gloves on my hands when I go to sleep. It's very helpful to prevent dryness. You wet your hands, put on cerave healing ointment while hands are wet, then put on cotton gloves. You can also use vanicream or aquaphor heaing ointment. I buy a big bottle of jojoba oil and then put some in a dropper bottle to use as cuticle oil. It works better at nourishing my cuticles/nails than other cuticle oils I've bought. I agree about moisturizing your hands and cuticles often, especially right after washing your hands. Also wearing gloves when doing dishes or cleaning is important for keeping your hands moisturized.
@juliar332
@juliar332 2 года назад
I also always put aquaphor healing ointment around my cuticles before removing my nail polish. It keeps the polish from staining your skin, and it helps prevent dryness of cuticles. I use aquaphor for this because it's cheaper than cerave, but I prefer the ingredients in cerave for using on my hands at night.
@susanbaker2796
@susanbaker2796 2 года назад
I agree 100%, Julia R. Wearing gloves when doing dishes or cleaning is a big one. Also when gardening. I constantly have to remind myself to wear gloves when digging in the dirt. It's terrible for you hands and nails.
@ILuvAyeAye
@ILuvAyeAye 2 года назад
@@juliar332 If you ever find that Cerave alone isn't cutting it, you could also try putting on Cerave and then putting Aquaphor on top. I know this is more expensive, but I get eczema and it helps. The Cerave has ingredients that sink into your skin, and then the Aquaphor (or just pure Vaseline, though I prefer Aquaphor) acts as a barrier to keep those ingredients and your body's natural oils in your skin.

I actually love using face products on my hands, as long as they’re affordable, or if I end up not liking to use them on my face but don’t want to toss them. Natural Moisturizing Factors from The Ordinary is my current favorite hand cream, and it’s about $8 for 3.3oz. I’m also using up a moisturizing toner and a peptide serum on my hands, and they make more of a difference than anything else I’ve ever put on my hands! I feel like actual hand and body moisturizers help with trans-epidermal water loss, but they don’t really hydrate very well or add moisture if that makes sense. But even if the skin on my hands does well with face products, my nails themselves definitely have different needs. Thanks for sharing your winter routine!
@cat_623
@cat_623 2 года назад
This is a great idea! I do the same, but if a product is one that for some reason won't work well on my hands, I use it on my feet at bedtime. I feel so much better about trying new products if I have this little "backup plan" to still make use of them, even if not for the original, intended purpose.
@ILuvAyeAye

I also think it's helpful to remember climate. I got to the point of sleeping with heavy cream and cotton gloves on, and I would still wake up with crusty cuticles. But I live in Chicago, and we finally got spring last night - I woke up to 55% humidity in my apartment (in winter it's often 10%) and beautiful cuticles. So if this stuff isn't working, maybe get a hygrometer and a humidifier. You won't need it every night (that's what the hygrometer is for - it measures humidity) but it makes a difference on those rough days.

loved this video!! it's good you made a post-covid version :) I've been using gel polishes and doing Russian manicure for several years until i recently rediscovered the bliss kiss blog and the importance of leaving you nail fold be, just push it back. and yeah, just like you said, once i started moisturizing regularly and just gently pushing the cuticle back, i don't even need remover, not really. and it was a really quick shift from dehydrated skin with hangnails to normal fingers. two weeks maybe
@violetviolet888

Mary Mary: You don't even have to push the proximal nail fold back. Dermatologists will often say one of the top three things they would NEVER do is remove or push back cuticles. What we have been "taught" are cuticles is actually wrong. Look up "What’s New in Nail Anatomy?" By Doug Schoon, April 15, 2019. The cuticle is the adhesive that holds our proximal nail fold which is living skin (what we all THINK is the cuticle) to our nail bed in order to protect our fingers from bacteria, viruses, contaminants from entering our bodies and causing infection. They are there for a reason. When you push back your proximal nail fold, you are causing trauma to living tissue which causes it to become inflamed and forces it to try to grow back which often it is harder skin because it's been traumatized. It is *completely unnecessary* to push back the proximal nail fold. It's a waste of time, money, and is damaging to that living tissue.

Thank you for sharing this, Kelli! I have a Gemanicure glass file that is a little stick like an orangewood stick. I use it to file up my sidewalls, cuz I have CRAZY raggedy sidewalls. I use a Holo Taco regular glass file and will NEVER go back to sandpaper. I use the cuticle remover when I do my weekly full manicure, using a metal pusher to collect the dead skin (GENTLY!). I do it every time because my cuticles are about as raggedy as my sidewalls...I am just 'blessed' with a lot of finger skin I guess. I agree that one should be very careful when using cuticle remover, but some of us have to use it more regularly. I was denting the heck out of my nail plates trying to push back the more tenacious cuticles, and the remover allows me to stay nice and gentle on the nails. I really want to try the Zoya remover. I plan to order some next time I order polish from them. Question to everyone out there--do you use a dedicated dehydrator product, or just isopropyl alcohol? I use iso to dehydrate and seem to get good results, but I wonder if it would be worth trying a dehydrator. Like, what's different about dehydrator vs. iso?
@thenailpolishbottle7267
@thenailpolishbottle7267 2 года назад
Hi! I have tried both but don't notice a big difference, most dehydrator products just have a nice scent added to the main ingredient, which is alcohol. I hope that helps :)

This was very informative, thank you Kelli for sharing this with us. My self care routine is, I like to wake up very early in the morning myself. I don't have to leave for work til 5:45-6:00 am and I wake up at 3:00-3:15. I take my time getting ready, doing my hair and makeup, then I get my breakfast and lunch ready. Then, I usually get a cup of coffee and watch RU-vid videos or I make a video to put up on my channel or I do my nails while watching RU-vid. People think that I am crazy getting up so early, but that is my alone and quiet time to relax before my hectic day starts. I am a healthcare worker and I really need to rest my body as much as I can, especially having severe fibromyalgia and bad arthritis all over. I am definitely going to try some of those strengtheners out. Thanks again Kelli and you look beautiful as always. Are you going to be doing any more makeup tutorials??? I really like those.

The absolute best cuticle product in my opinion is Qtica. It's a very dense balm and you need the tiniest amount. I've just thrown the very end of my first jar away, and I've had that for at least fifteen years, if not twenty. I don't use it everyday, but I know that when I'm having problems with dryness, that's the one I go for. I also use it over cold sores to help them heal (a tiny bit on a cotton bud, no double dipping).

ROFL! "Go to the bathroom." Yes, yes, yes! I always tell folks, "Go to the bathroom before you start because the easiest way to pooch a manicure is heading there with nails that aren't fully dry." I'm glad to pass on how easy it is to do a good manicure when folks ask (most don't know about clean-up brushes) and that's the first step. I've used OPI Nail Envy for years (both clear and "Hawaiian Orchid"). I think I'll give Duri Rejuvacote a try. I've noticed, and friends have commented, that my nails grow very quickly. It'll be interesting to see if the Nail Envy has been the reason.

I learned to do gel manicure for myself and I really enjoyed it. The good thing is I don’t need to wait for it to dry after curing under the lamp. So I usually leave the moisturizing and cuticle oil step to the very end. Also because my natural nails are just too weak, regular nail polish won’t work for me.
