I.D.E.A. Studios launch collection is available now to order to your home! 🚀 weareideastudios.com - thank you so much for your support! In today's video I respond to Russell Brand's recent video about processed plant-based alternatives. However, the aspect of the plant-based alternatives conversation I'm most interested in, is how these products are being targeted by the meat industry in an attempt to discredit veganism.

I've been a whole-food vegan for about a year now and I really don't miss meat at all. It smells gross to me now. But I know that it's a lot easier to cook for my meat-eating family using plant based meat substitutes, whenever they have dinner at my place. I agree that delicious meat substitutes lessen the need for meat. It's still about the animals for me, not so much about my health. Even though I feel much healthier now than I ever did before I went vegan. Thanks for the vid!

Be careful consuming soy, the elites push soy onto vegans plates for many reasons, 80% of soy is gmo, gives vegans colon cancer every year, and actually takes years off your lifespan to break down digestive wise. Congrats! After a yr you can smell BO from meat-eaters too. I" ve been vegan since 2001, as soon as I could buy my own food lol. I have stopped mid-way in 2012 for a yr with a BF who was only vegetarian. I felt a huge difference in my health and skin. I don't think I will ever be a nonvegan again at this point. I think fake meats are not bad for transitioning but for me, I always disliked the smell and taste so stick to WFPB homemade foods. It's much easier to be vegan today, when I started few knew what it was.

@Paul Semmens You are suggesting I am brainwashed while you think it absolutely has to be this way simply because it has been this way. As if it were without alternative. Those two oldest people also didn't live on green energy so that must be a fluke as well. Sure, animal byproducts are efficient in those regards but that shouldn't mean we ought not to look for better ways. And those ways are there, they might just be detours or uncomfortable - for you.

Expecting people to convert from a standard American diet to a strictly whole foods, plant based diet is insane. The vast majority of people won't be able to do it. Making veganism accessible for the average person is the goal. Processed vegan foods and mock meats help so many people transition. Once people become more comfortable with eating only plants, they'll usually naturally evolve and transform their diets to include less processed mock meats, and more whole foods. But if they don't, who cares? The goal was to stop eating animals.

When I first went vegan you couldn't even get soya milk in the supermarket it was tough as I never liked fruits and vegetables but my moral compass was far more important to me so I made do, now I don't have to make do and I'm loving I can have the taste and texture of the type of foods I love.

I do eat Impossible burger, Beyond sausage, Just Egg about 25% of the time. I agree, Ed, these options are still much healthy than the animal-products they replaced. People also don't understand that most animal products are processed. A lot of ground beef has red slime which makes it look healthier. White eggs don't get laid that way. If we want to be real about processed foods and health, let's be real in every way. Thanks, Ed, for another awesome video!

That's true, but most people in society won't understand the shirt if they see it. The point of these shirts is to advertise animal rights and get the people around you to acknowledge that veganism is a valid option. It can be helpful in sparking conversions. But if it said "I don't exploit animals", people in general might think that means you don't support exploitation of pet animals. Because non-vegans don't acknowledge that there are issues with how farm animals are treated.

I needed recipes for the non-perishables and I fell in the rabbit hole of WFPBD, I continued because of health (middleaged) and the peer review evidence in nutrition science. I never even thought about animal slaughter industry or destruction of forests for animal feed. It took someone who was vegetarian to point out that I was vegan, that made me to look for the definitions of vegetarian and vegan, just then, almost 6 months in the process that I fell in the rabbit hole of climate change and animal suffering. I now am very proud of reducing suffering and carbon footprint but in the beginning I couldn't care less.

I absolutely loved the clothes and the IDEA behind it. Get it? On the other hand, I really don't know why is it so hard to understand that veganism advocates for more plant based options to "regular" food precisely because it's not like we immediately just hate the taste of meat. It's easier to make someone transition when you show them that the sacrifice isn't that big because they can keep eating even those tasty not-that-healthy foods but cruelty free! And the more vegan people there are, the more alternatives will keep coming. This and the fact alone that we can thrive on a vegan diet should be great news for anyone concerned about animals and the environment, I know it was for me when I educated myself and I'm never looking back. Russell has stated on many occasions that he does consider the animals, and he's against exploitation in general, and I'm guessing that's an elemental of his spiritual exploration. He also stated (for comedic purposes) that he was peer pressured into veganism, since he has a strong ethical mindset, and knew it was the right thing to do even if he didn't really want to at first. So maybe he isn't an activist for the animals, but I'm sure it factored into his decision, since he seems like a very considerate, caring person.

The studies you cited are problematic and biased. In the 1st study you cited, there was funding provided by The Meatless Farm. In the 2nd study you cited, it was funded by Beyond Meat. So both of your studies had inherent vegan special-interests and biases. Also, the 2nd study primarily looked at TMAO levels in participants as the main assessment, and the scientific literature on TMAO being toxic as well as it’s link to insulin resistance is not substantiated as accepted science yet. Simply measuring TMAO levels and indicating increase/decrease in overall health-factors is extremely problematic and limiting, as it discounts the myriad of other health factors one can measure. Both of the studies you cited have significant issues, and yet you speak of them as if it’s scientific consensus or objective truth that veganism = best for your health. You’re engaging in the same dogmatism as carnivores who think carnivorism = best for your health . I can’t believe we’re in 2022 and we still haven’t widely accepted how infinitely individualized metabolic health can be. There are SO many factors involved, metabolic and environmental, not even counting mental health, and to think measuring TMAO levels after 8 weeks on a loosely-disciplined diet of meat or plant-based meat as THE determining factor in heart health or overall health is disingenuous and engaging in academic dishonesty. I strongly believe you are engaging in dogmatism of the highest order, in fact it is the very same dogmatism you despise in “the other side”, except you’ve convinced yourself of a moral superiority in your plight that the other side is devoid of (allegedly), based on shakey evidence at best. The fact that you stand so steadfastly behind 2 studies with clear funding biases demonstrates your willful blindness. I really hope people can see past your extremism.

I recently offered to let a refugee from Ukraine stay in my spare room, but didn't really think about just how unusual veganism can seem. When the English-speaking contact asked "Can they use the kitchen?", it was hard to provide a clear response. The thought of dead animals sitting in the fridge or on the counter - or of the smell hanging in the air - was sickening. At the same time, it's often considered a basic right and freedom of being a respected adult to be able to keep "food". Luckily it seems the incoming tenant understands somewhat. A big part of this is having alternatives: "Is that milk?" "It's oat milk." "Oh, okay, we have milk." Weirdly enough, Wal-Mart seems to have some of the best vegan options, although I prefer other stores otherwise. $6 vegan supreme pizzas, vegan ice cream sandwiches, mushroom steaks, these make it easy to keep things on-hand that feel like "treats". I like to just throw a bunch of premade stuff on a tray in the oven and let it bake because it's easy. Toss in a couple Prager's risotto burgers with a little green dressing, oil, and rosemary bread on the side, and it's fancy, and doesn't leave guests feeling like their freedoms are being infringed. Fresh is great, but so is prepped sometimes.

Then you start a highly intensive ultra processing system that lasts for up to 24 months and requires inputs such as sex hormones, growth hormones and antibiotics to produce the food. I wonder what the media narrative would be like if plant based burgers contained some of these inputs???

I haven't seen RB's video (his content has become so conspiratorial that I've backed off entirely) but a gap in the analysis here seems to be the corporate take-up of plant-based alternatives as an important aspect of the moral/ethical debate. Some of the companies carrying out the worst treatment of humans and other animals are investing in plant-based lines (and, as I've seen, funding animal rights-justified opposition to Right to Food advocacy in some US states, because the crux of the latter is about undoing industrial agribusiness and land concentration- which 'plant-based' alone doesn't tackle, in the same way that organic/Fair Trade have not tackled- I know Ed does address issues of agricultural capitalism, but important to see the way veganism has been coopted by those very forces in some instances- how is 'the meat industry' itself attempting to profit from an industrial-scale commodification of veganism?). 2nd point: just as processed/unprocessed is over-simplistic, so is the idea of 'objectively' healthy/unhealthy- I've worked my way through many vegan burger/sausage brands and rarely find one that doesn't make my IBS flare up, unfortunately- health means many things to many people. 3rd point: pedantic, but the word 'ethical' in relation to fashion feels to me a bit unspecific, in the way that 'natural' does in relation to birth/food/cosmetics etc- I think would be best to keep being specific about exactly what ethical issues the clothing brand is tackling, and how, rather than calling them 'ethical' in the abstract. @I Coroa Keep the replies short. It's not that deep my dude. His point still stands because what we should focus on is whether something is healthy or not. Or how healthy or unhealthy. The word 'processed' is thrown around in the same way 'natural' is.....It's tend to skew people away from what is really being said. Watch the video. Try to control that bias....

I think you're often quite solid in argumentation, but that you would argue processed plant burgers are healthier than grass fed red meat is Beyond belief. The link to the study doesn't take me there so if you see this please provide a reference, I'd love to evaluate the data. I'm very sympathetic toward veganism but this claim seems ridiculous given the worrisome ingredients that are found in Beyond Meat.

His sunk in, tired eyes. Pale grey skin. His tiny skeleton like arms and neck, makes him look better than ever? He's incredibly feminine, most likely caused by the destruction of his hormonal balance brought on by eating an, unnatural, unnourishing, man made B.S. diet.

Its all good if you are rich. Your ideas wont work if you are poor and living hand to mouth. Actual vegetables are way more expensive, given the cost of fuel rising say good bye to imported fruits and veggies and eat seasonal, which INCLUDE MEAT AND ANIMAL products. Vegetables dont grow in super market, which majority of vegans think as i had an argument with someone who had this view.

I went vegan for animals 31 years ago but 6 years ago for health I went to high FRUIT plant based & consume 80% fruits & mostly raw… this helped save my life after allopathic doctors messed me up (clinically killed me) but at the same time - I rather eat the most processed vegan stuff than the best organic free range animal foods… vegan stuff doesn’t crate addictions (fear adrenaline will damage & get adrenal glands addicted like cocain or heroin) - not even processed ones & it is NOT cruelty - lowering our conciseness… so I salute ALL VEGANS for being vegan but of course try getting healthy stuff! 🍊☀️💖🌱😘

Hold up, you and Russell Brand are different people? One silver lining to this inflationary environment is that animal-derived products seem to be increasing in price faster than plant-based foods. The moment you can easily find meat alternatives for cheaper than real meat is the moment that veganism gets supercharged. It's getting close with some things; last weekend where I live, a gallon of store-brand milk was $3.23, where a half-gallon of store-brand almond milk was $2.19. I'm not sure how the brand names are doing against each other.

If you’re going to change your diet and try to become vegan because you want a “healthier” diet and be fit, then you’re most likely going to give up sooner or later and eventually fail. Now, if you’re wanting to give veganism a try because you actually DO love animals and are against all the cruelty and because of ethics, then I guarantee you you’ll most likely, if not will, stay and become vegan. So bottom line, don’t do it cuz of health, do it cuz of the animals and moral ethics. Period.
