I feel like the other characters are intriguing enough, I keep seeing people say the show falls off towards the end but I still find it interesting.

I think it was meant to be ambiguous. Your interpretation may be true, but it could also be true that he believed he really would have been friends with Light had the circumstances been a bit different. It's not that deep, but it's still pretty sad. Mortal enemies are often two sides of the same coin.

A guy like L...would compartmentalize the positives and negatives, the possibility that Light is kira and the possibility that he isn't, its probably that both were true. Internally he's thinking "I feel this way, let's use that as a chess move"

I agree that L is not the type to admit his feelings (even if it's true) and if we assume he didn't mean it, question still exists why he thought calling Light friend will affect him or get some reaction? Why about Light strange reaction? Also in next episode Light is like 'L is showing up at college to waver my resolution to kill him' like why seeing him will waver your decison? Why they both keep making moves on assumption other is affected because on some level they know that's truth but proud to admit it.

​@@foreighteen7797Ohba was asked about in an interview and he said L was lying. He never saw Light as a friend and he pretty much said that L actually hated Light.

While I agree somewhat you also have to realize just how big of a vulnerability Misa is to Kira. She isn't nearly as sharp, she flaunts her power and made it clear they only need a face so now it'll be even harder to access that information for the real Kira. Now she wants to be around him all the time? You think she WONT slip up to anyone?

You misunderstood. They mean now it won't be so easy to dispose of Misa once he is done using her...

It is thanks to her that Light gained a god (Rem) for a pawn, and it is thanks to the two of them that Light is able to turn the memory-related features of the Death Note and his fake rules into cheat codes that will render all of L's apparent advantages and progress meaningless in the end.

As a Japanese person, I never thought about the gender of Shinigami because We don't use She or He. I think it's a shame that a language can't talk about a person without knowing their gender.

Wait did you just assume Rem's gender?

@@professor_ryoma yeah it’s so hard to speak English sometimes in terms of monsters of fiction because we always have to use “it” or “shinigami” in sentences which doesn’t always fit without actual pronouns.

@Center-t1o The "how to read" volume has interviews with the author and he said L disliked Light. The anime make it in a way that a lot of people see this bond between 2 genius. L understands that Light friendship is a fake attempt to get close to him. He even said that at the end of the episode that L reveals himself. But how can you say "nothing in the soty implied he was messing with him"? L is literally messing with Light the whole time. Testing him in multiple ways every episode.

@Center-t1o You talk about comments on youtube beign missinterpreted, but you took my quote as completely literal. It was not past tense. You can look it up for yourself. Author said L don't have friends. And that he has negative thoughts about Light. I'm sorry if you wanted them to be friends, but the author cleary didn't make it that way.

@Center-t1o Nah, I'm not upset, I just found it ironic that you critiziced comments online exetcly because of that, but at the same time took a comment online as proof. Like I said, you can search online for the exact quotes, it's not that hard (even though the english version has mistranslations, specialy in the charts where they translated "knowledge" to "intelligence", leading multiple people to believe the author said Light is more intelligent than L). Just check it for yourself, my comment is just giving the general information. There are even people that chose to not consider the author opinion on those interview responses. It's all fine.

@@Shiftydv Yes. The author himself confirmed he disliked Light. L was straight up mocking Light with the friendship thing. In fact he mocked him twice, first implying that he was less likely to be Kira because the last message from the second Kira was dumber (to which Light took the bait and felt the need to clap back)
