I finally got my Viking style canvas tent. It's huge and highly historically incorrect! I will use this tent at Viking festivals, when I'm presenting my new novel and maybe even some car camping (it weighs about 40 kgs) in the near future.

We have had a very similar tent for many years, although ours is made with a much heavier fabric. It holds up well in strong winds and is surprisingly waterproof. We can fit all our viking equipment and a wooden double bed inside. It looks great when we attend festivals and private camps. Many other clans tend to gravitate to our tent and table in the evening.

Also my current plans are for a custom made tent that is a cross between the Geteld and standard Viking A-frame tents. Plan to take the best of both and mix them together.

You might as well be happy about it, it is what it is. I used one similar to it in Boy Scouts and it is satisfactory with extra poles and guy lines. Proper placement of stakes and poles is key. Thanks for sharing, Skal.

Nice looking tent I use my reenactment tent when me and the kids go camping they like using it I have a big dinner fly it is the revolutionary war style tent basically it's an A-frame

Have you thought about putting a protective coating on your tint? 1/2 mineral spirits 1/2 linseed oil will help keep it waterproof.

I have always been convinced that had the Vikings had access to cotton they would have used it without a doubt. Around here Linen is what is hard to come by so cotton it is! You have to think that as time progressed and new materials became available or were discovered that of course, they would have adapted especially in choosing cotton tunics over linen in hot climates or weather. Cotton would have most certainly been used had they access to it. I have not ever been one to be too worried about " historically correct " unless it comes to reenactments. However, the Vikings would have adapted and changed with the times had they continued into modern times just like the rest of us. I have zero problems with wearing a cotton tunic and using cotton canvas to create a Viking tent.

I think wool from a rare sheep for sails etc. if I am sourced well. Surprised that nobody has developed a commercially viable technically modern source for that textile. But maybe there is not that many "Viking" tents and sails left to be made.

That looks to be a very good tent....... there are many modifications you can make as you say. Is your interest in the Vikings purely historic or cultural and religious ?...........do you follow any of the reinterpreted ancient Norse religions ?

I am sure Vikings did not have zippers, either. I would not worry about it being historically correct. The field you have it in was probably a woods back then and I am sure any visitors did not come to the festival by walking but in a vehicle. If they want you to be historically correct -they have to be, too.

I'm sure, if your videos are anything to go by. and you mention a book and a festival. maybe then if you get the whole viking clan to make a section at a time,,,, maybe you will be able to do your other things and still enjoy the authentic tent when is done with all of them. just ideas of my head, have big Taino family too.

Not to be an ass, which I usually get called anyhow, but, am I the only one who realizes this tent is not a "viking" or even a "norse" tent? Its actually a French Double Belled Wedge Tent.
