We are SO excited to share our 1920's makeup tutorial with special guest, Dr. Colleen Darnell, aka @Vintage_Egytologist! Colleen has a perfect 1920's face (and wardrobe!) and I really enjoyed doing both a daytime and evening makeup look on her. I hope you all enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed making it!
We shot another video with Colleen where we discuss makeup in ancient Egypt, which you can watch here: • Makeup and Beauty in A...
*Both Colleen and I were tested for Covid right before we shot this video, which is why we both felt comfortable shooting this without masks or PPE. All brushes and makeup were thoroughly sanitized.*
You can find some of the products I used here: www.amazon.com/shop/myvintageloveblog

My Vintage Love you mentioned early eyelash curlers in the video. If you have the book Classic Beauty by Gabriela Hernandez there is a picture on page 52, the Kurlash eyelash curler from 1923 looks identical to modern curlers.

OH MY GOD! That was amazing. The look was spot-on. I kind of cringe when I see 1920s makeup tutorials because they're not very historically accurate. And Colleen looks like she literally stepped out of the 1920s. She's absolutely stunning

It’s interesting to hear about the actual colors used (particularly in the clothing) because it makes me think about the film “Singin’ in the Rain”. I had always thought the film featured exaggerated, “modernized” spins on the fashion of the 20’s; yet being released in 1952 suggests much of the production crew would have had clear memories of the styles and textiles (and dyes) of the time. (Yes, Cyd Cherisse’s costume silhouettes were too form-fitting for general fashion of the era, but I believe that was the vaudeville dancer influence.) What jumped out at me was your discussing the “acid greens” and other vibrant colors. Made me think of the “dream scene” in the film.

Not only do I appreciate the length and breadth of care and accuracy you both have in this video, it comforts me more than words can say that you are both showing how amazing and beautiful women of ALL ages can be, in today's youth-focussed culture where you're nonsensically treated as "old" and that fashion is no longer for you after 25 or so.... I am almost 30 and dammit I will be wearing blue lipstick when I'm 80!

I know this video was over a year ago. I recently found Dr. Darnell and this lovely channel. My question is, does Colleen wear a wig or is that her hair. This is NOT an era I can pull off but I have always loved the smart and sassy appearance of this 20's shingle bob. Those, like Colleen, who can pull it off make all of the rest of us jealous. We all have an era/look that best fits us as was mentioned. Plus, we always want what we can't have...still I would love to try and see how I look. Or get tips from Colleen how she does her hair.
@MyVintageLove
@MyVintageLove 3 года назад
Hi! glad you found both of our channels! As far as I know, that is indeed Colleen's real hair! She is lucky to have the perfect hair for a bob (and a good hairstylist, I assume!) as well as the perfect face for 20s makeup and figure for 20s clothing, lol. Consider trying out a wig just to see how you look in a bob- I've had one for years that I've worn many times and it's lots of fun to change around your look. That's all the info I have on Dr. Darnell's hair; maybe you could request a video from her on hair tips? Thank you for watching!

This was such a great video. Are you planning on doing videos on makeup looks from the 40's and 50's? I am extremely fair, and if I was looking for a blue based red lipstick (that emulates a vintage red) that wasn't drying and was relatively easy to find in Australia would you have any recommendations?

Thank you! Yes we are shooting the 50s video soon and the 40s video after that. The first lipstick that comes to mind is MAC Red from MAC. It’s very blue based and looks good on fair skin. I think MAC is easy to find in Australia but not sure.

@@MyVintageLove I really enjoy the vintage makeup looks, you can tell how much research has gone into each one and they're so informative and entertaining. Thanks so much for the recommendation. MAC is pretty easy to find in Australia, so I'll go and pick it up this week.

The day into evening look you created for Colleen is fabulous! When applying pressed powder what application method/technique do you recommend?

How you take care of your skin before putting on makeup makes so much difference, you should gently exfoliate your face and let a good moisturiser sink in before powdering. Laura Mercier does an amazing face powder, Hope this helps 😊

You mentioned briefly that makeup was worn very subtly in the Victorian era. Can you describe what that looked like what what they would do? This video was so informative and wonderful to watch as well!
@MyVintageLove
@MyVintageLove 3 года назад
Thank you! I"m so glad you enjoyed it! The makeup in the Victorian era would heave been limited to ladies wearing a bit of powder and maybe a tiiiiny bit of rouge for special occasions. There was lots of skincare back then to get a clear, glowing complexion, and I have heard about very wealthy ladies also doing something called "enameling", but I don't know as much about that.

When was the first powder eyeshadow introduced? Opposed to the salve ones.
@MyVintageLove

I believe they were available in the 1920's, although certain forms of powder eyeshadow (crushed malacite, etc) would have been used in Ancient Egypt.

@@MyVintageLove I can't find proof, the earliest maybe is forties. Just a pic that looks like powder eyeshadow. Earliest ads I found are late fifties. Ps, the book Face of the Century, iirc, states salve formulations.
@MyVintageLove
@MyVintageLove 3 года назад
@@daphne4983 There are definitely ads and books and magazines showing powder eyeshadow in the 30s. I'm sure with a deep enough dive I could find some for the 20s as well. They just weren't being worn as much in the 20s.

@@daphne4983 There is a book that I reference in my 30s tutorial called simply "Makeup" by Virginia Vincent that was written in the 30s and has been reprinted. She references using powder eyeshadow in every step by step in the book. If you google "Maybelline Advertisements 1930s" quite a few ads showing eye makeup, including powder shadow should come up. If there's any way you can find some 30s women's magazines there are references to eyeshadow in some of the makeup step by steps they had back then. Hope that helps.

Thanks for such a great tutorial. Looking to replicate the look and I usually go places if I have an event but this is totally doable at home. what would u recommend to make that eyebrow shape if I have eyebrows on the thicker side and also I guess the lips were red regardless of what they were wearing right?
@MyVintageLove
@MyVintageLove 3 года назад
Thank you for watching! So glad you enjoyed it! If you have thicker brows there's a limit to how much you can do to make them look thinner. You can pull concealer through your brows with a spoolie then draw in thin brows with a dark brow pencil, or you can do the full drag queen brow cover, although that is a lot of work and doesn't look natural. Yes they were pretty much wearing red lipstick, although you could do a darker color if you're doing and evening look.

@@MyVintageLove thanks so much I appreciate it. Also do u know if turban velvet hats were worn for evening wear and also if they had embellishments like they put out with the lots of feathers the flapper look. Putting a look for evening look and I don’t think the flapper look that they make it seem to be isn’t the look I want to go for I want something in the more historic approach like u said on your video not every women was a flapper or in Hollywood fashion.
@MyVintageLove
@MyVintageLove 3 года назад
@@christellabach2849 I think turbans were definitely worn in the 20's. I don't know how embellished they would have been, but I have seen them in some photos. It would have been part of a Vamp or Ballet Russes look, not so much a flapper look.
