People have been asking me to show off my vinyl records and how they are displayed and my turntable set-up/gear for a while now. In my old space it wasn't feasible, but I just moved and now I'm excited to do just that! In this video I take you around my room and show you where all the records reside, and also show you how I listen to my records. Included below in the description are links to our gear for shooting, my set-up, record storage, recommendations, and more! Have at it.
Our Gear! Use these babies to shoot videos that look and sound like ours :)
- (THE BEST CAMERA EVER) PANASONIC LUMIX GH5 Body 4K Mirrorless Camera - amzn.to/2trQbyH
- (THE BEST LENS EVER) Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art DC HSM Lens -amzn.to/2sRZ3AM
- (THE BEST MIC EVER) Rode NTG4 PLUS Shotgun Microphone - amzn.to/2tMeua2
My Speakers/Speaker Recommendations:
I have the speakers right below this. If you're on a budget, they are great entry level bookshelf speakers. Below that are ones I'm eyeing when it comes time to upgrade (which will be soon)
-Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2-Inch 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair -
amzn.to/2rB90OF
-Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers -
amzn.to/2tryShl
-Polk Audio TSi100 Bookshelf Speakers -
amzn.to/2sRNFF3
-Sony SSCS3 3-Way Floor-Standing Speaker -
amzn.to/2sz9gim
-Onkyo SKF-4800 2-Way Bass Reflex Floor-standing Speakers -
amzn.to/2sRNOZ7
-Pioneer SP-FS52 Floor standing Loudspeaker -
amzn.to/2sOPpxO
Vinyl Accessories:
Very important to run a carbon fiber record brush over your records before spinning to remove dust and grime on the surface that can cause nasty pops or surface noise. Some of these carbon fiber brushes on the market are sub-par, but this one will do the trick.
-Hunt: EDA Mark 6 Carbon Fiber Record Brush -
amzn.to/2sOHKQd
Turntables:
I always recommend hunting around garage sales or craigslist for vintage turntables (made in the 70s is the sweet spot) -- that's what
I did, at least. My turntable is a Pioneer PL-518X. If you absolutely must buy a brand new table, these ones will be good entries to the hobby.
Audio Technica AT-LP120 - amzn.to/2sOuTNQ
Pro-Ject - Debut Carbon DC - amzn.to/2sUegB2
Receivers:
I went vintage for my receiver as well. It's a Pioneer SX-790. Here is a good option if you're looking to grab something new:
Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver - amzn.to/2sSa7Ot
Record Storage:
So you have your set-up and now you're acquiring records like a crazy person. The king of record storage units is the IKEA Kallax (formerly Expedit) line.
IKEA Kallax Bookcase 2x4 - amzn.to/2sOur2m
IKEA Kallax Bookcase 4x4 - amzn.to/2sSp82u
IKEA Kallax Bookcase 2x2 - amzn.to/2sUoP6S
Cassette Storage:
Napa Valley Natural Wood 100 Audio Cassette Tape Case Holder - amzn.to/2sQMntg

Yes my friend no more vinyl until you invest in a much better system. For one if your a pioneer guy like I am myself get a receiver at least in the 50 or 80's series. Example one I wish I would have kept was my sx-950 which would be a good one for your small room. You would likely never need to go beyond 10 o'clock on the dial. If you like the look of yours then you will like the 950. Currently my daily driver which I like rotating my gear is the sx-1080 which is a 120 watt receiver. Here is a link to the two great receivers the sx-1050 and the sx-1080. classicreceivers.com/pioneer-sx-1080 I prefer the look of the 1080. Next the turntable if you don't want a different one at least look into getting the feet worked on. Either looking for original replacements that have the rubber boot still on the feet. Their are upgrades likely on eBay you can attach to the bottom of that 518 to give you better performance for sure. There are a bunch of turntables from Pioneer and I recommend the line before the series you have which was the pl-550 or the pl-570 specifically. Or choose one from the early 80's the pl-505 or the pl-707. I own the 707 which i like a lot. I have a Shure V15 type iii he cart and that is good setup. Next being a cassette guy also get rid of that cassette deck and find a true 3 head deck from pioneer or Nakamichi. These can be found easily on eBay but they typically will need a belt change and some cleaning to the pinch rollers to get them going. A good pioneer deck which can be had for a reasonable price that pops up now and then is the pioneer ct-s800. Trust me it's a nice deck. Nakamichi is another brand I own and the cr-3a would be the equivalent to the pioneer deck I referred to. The Nak if working properly probably would sound a bit better but I find pioneer decks at least the ones from about 1983 to 1990 are more reliable and prefer to work on them more than Nak decks. As far as speakers go I'm not going to get into that too much but have been a huge speaker fan since the 80's and this specifically got me into being an audio nut. This piece of your set up is important and I have been doing some research as of late since so many audiophile RU-vidrs talk about systems and setups. Some expert which I'm not by any means says you should spend 3x as much for your speakers than you spend on your receiver/ preamp/amp set up. I have speakers from the mid 80's pioneer DSS line up. The Dss-7 and the Dss-9's are great speakers and always wanted them since the 1980's. They are well built and sound great. It took me a while to find them locally but well worth the wait. Had the famous hpm-100s for years and likely would be much easier to find. You might not have the room for them but since your a vinyl guy your collection deserves better equipment and a larger listening area. If the room size cannot change then you might consider just getting the better receiver and maybe going with a set of paradigm studio 20 v2 speakers. These are great small book shelves from the late 90's. Hope I could help in anyway and good luck.

Great video! I'm an 'older' dude and love it when I see young people (Millenials) getting into records, turntables, hifi, etc. I wish I had a friend or two that was into it as much as me. I have good collection of albums, 12" singles, CDs from the 80s--today. I also have my parent's albums from the 60s-70s. I'm in the process of updating my system and reorganizing my records etc. Keep up the good work---you're an inspiration to (me) and others . It's never too late to get into the magic of vinyl records---they're so fun to collect. No one ever said 'lets go look at my MP3 collection' LOL

I have 900+ vinyl, CDs, cassettes (combined) & 300+ DVDs, video tapes (combined) i thought my collection was big until i watch your or other peoples videos. I don't see myself collecting much anymore, the older i get the less interested i am in new artists & finishing collections. I'm planning on donating my "live bootlegg recordings" (bought or self made) to the artists i recorded so they can be properly archived, as well "old gig posters" i've collected will also be donated.

Do yourself a favor and buy a pair of modern speakers. Vintage speakers can have a lot of issues and most don't come close to the detail and soundstage that newer speakers can provide.

1st of all..NO SUCH THING AS TO MANY RECORDS!!! lol. Thanks for the tour. These are always my favorite videos. One more speaker, speaking budget wise, that I would add to your list...the Elac B6 bookshelf speaker. For $200-250 you will not find a better brand new bookshelf speaker. A lot of reviews people can check out right here on youtube. Totally with you on the box sets. Up to about 2 years ago I could not stand them at all...Now, they are totally my favorite thing to collect!! lol. Happy spinning my friend and again thanks for the tour. PS, I think you need to replace that shelf holding your box sets with another 2x4 from ikea lol.
@stakesishigh8443
@stakesishigh8443 5 лет назад
@too many records I use the EKET shelves from IKEA. Kallax dont have a back so your records push out of the back side of the cube. EKET is sturdier and thinner. Records line up perfectly with the edge of the cubby. theyre pricier though, but its worth it for the cleaner look and they're stackable.

@TooManyRecords
@TooManyRecords 7 лет назад
You should look to make sure it works! :P But for real, check to make sure it has the cartridge/stylus attached (I've seen people try to pass tables off missing them) - you still may have to replace it depending on how much mileage it has, but yeah. Definitely test it wherever you buy it. As I said, 70s is the sweet spot. Avoid tables made in the 90s. Brands I recommend are Technics, Pioneer, Rega, Thorens, Marantz, and some Sony's depending on the decade.

Great collection and a nice system, but you can definitely find better speakers than the ones you listed. Those Edifier speakers are powered and you already have an amp and without a separate phono pre-amp you won't be able to connect them to your turntable. Second hand is probably you're best bet...
@rarewavemusic

Really enjoyed the video. So, I’m wondering if I’m the only one that alphabetizes their records Z to A. Here’s why. At one time, and for a long time, my records were in bins. ‘A’s in front, ‘Z’s at the back. Moving them from bins to shelves as-is had them as ‘Z’s on the left and ‘A’s on the right. I considered reversing the order, but found that I preferred this arrangement. Most spine lettering reads down (except I have some non-USA pressings that read up; those I store on the shelf upside down). In browsing through my collection, if I tilt my head a bit to the right, starting in the upper right corner, I’m reading the spines left to right, then down; like lines on a page. Seems more intuitive for me than reading left to right, then up. I certainly do get the logic of A to Z across a shelf, but wondering if others alphabetize this way. (And yes, I’ve done that with my books, too.) Is this some rare form of dyslexia? Or maybe I’m too lazy and stubborn to reverse the order and then have to get used to the “normal” way of alphabetizing.

Groove goes from the outside to the inside. If you take the brush the other way,you are going against the groove. This will dissipate a lot of the dust back onto your record. Take the brush over the label and lift up. Dust will go with the brush. Then go away from the system and clean the brush, not with your fingers.

If you're into vintage Pioneer, you might want to try the HPM100 speakers. They are big and great sounding speakers and match your SX790. I would at some point upgrade your TT. The 518x is not a very good player to be honest. Again if you're into vintage Pioneer, look for the PL550 (or 530) I have one in my attic system and started with vintage Pioneer a couple of years ago. Now i'm 35 and am as much of a music fan / record collector myself. Love your video's!

@TooManyRecords

Just make sure they aren't in direct sunlight. A warm room is actually not the end of the world. What warps a record is direct sunlight or RAPID fluctuations in temperature. Last summer there was a string of LA days over 105 degrees, with one going as high as 111. I was so nervous, but my records were fine.

I think if you want to hear the sound at it's best then a Linear Tracking Turntable is the way to go as it plays your albums the way they were cut of the cutting lathe, What about a set of RANK ARENA 4R impedance speakers.

Did you put a back on those Kallax shelves? I have Kallax shelves, they did not come with any backing. I'm thinking of purchasing some backer board from the local hardware store and screwing it or nailing it onto the back but I think the Kallax shelf frames are hollow so I don't know how well I could nail or screw backer board on to them. Suggestions??

Awesome collection but you need to put a little more of that money in some decent speakers like maybe some Harbeth’s to really hear all those great albums. Cheers

Milk Crates lol I have a shelf plus 5 milk crates. Each fit up to 150 records Also instead of tweezers use a small price of Mr Clean Magic eraser or an old mascara brush. Save yourself from losing $100+

Hi Matt..lovely set up..i have all pioneer myself..a pl512..entry deck with grado cart and I love my TT...one thing I can't get my head around is the return of the cassette...is it that the newer releases are somehow remastered to make them sound amazing..i do hold a place in my heart for the mix tape but as for sound quality I always remember the cassettes being pretty awful...is it all just nostalgia??

Cassette is not the optimal format for EVERY genre. Some genres, especially ones that are by nature lo-fi, sound excellent on cassette. Tape hiss can really add to the atmosphere of certain styles of music. Vaporwave often times is one of those genres that benefits greatly from being heard on tape.

I’m guessing you are in the Bay Area? Great use of space. I thinking of getting wood carved dividers for my records to make it eaiser to find them. I found the plastic projection is making it harder to find the records. I know it protects them but yikes, the plastic looks messy

Perhaps you should summon Shenlong and wish for unlimited shelf space and perfect speakers? And then maybe immortality, because why not? P.S. Loving the production values as of late. The sound has been much better these past couple of videos.

I agree, go vintage. Also put most of you money into speakers and phono cartridge. Recievers and amps do make a big difference. But if the cartridge or speakes are bad you are already in bad shape. I have an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge on my Thorens TD166 MkII turntable and Advent new Large Loudspeakers. I got a $3.00 deal of the century at Goodwill, a near mint Sony AT-1150 Amplifier from 1973 nicknamed the "Mac Killer" because It was as good if not better than the Macintosh amps made that year.

anything before 1980 or earlier will need recapped, as they have electrolytic capacitors that have gone bad.

Also in regards to speakers... your record collection deserves so much better (I started system first so you'd probably say my system deserves more records). However, I'd say do a purge and sell a bunch of records and then buy Wharfedale Diamond 220 speakers, Cambridge Audio CXA60 (or 80) integrated amp, and maybe upgrade the table to a Debut Carbon Espirit SB (room for improvement with the cartridge in the future). That being said... your room is small like mine and likely acoustically poor so maybe some small powered monitoring speakers like the Audio Engine A2+ would be best suited for your room size.
