Jeremy when you do the in cab switches I'd like if you could also expand a little more on that battery kill switch. Just real quick on what you did and the benefit. I know it's kind of obvious the purpose, but I think just a little bit more detail on the explanation could be very valuable for many
@jeremyrose7541
@jeremyrose7541 4 года назад
Definitely thanks for the suggestion I will definitely touch on that! The biggest thing is we all add a bunch of add-ons to our Rigs and it's very easy to create parasitic draws. And it'll run your battery down. So if you have the kill switch before all of your radios on light bars and cigarette lighters. It really helps

@@jeremyrose7541 yea, i've heard in other parts of the world they do 'winch competitions' with dual motor 8274's... and like 8-10 batteries on a chassis... crazy! but, yea, it's an amazing winch. i'm thinking it's the lack of mounting options that's against more people going with one.

My 8274 was built in the late 80's early 90's (Warn can't pinpoint any closer) and I didn't have the ground lug on my motor. I put a new lug on the motor housing instead of having the ground wire just bolted to a random bolt on the winch. As usually, Jeremy you did a great video and can't wait for the next one. Of course it could be just because I like seeing a leaf spring vehicles

Watching this video on your 8274 brought back a lot of memories. I worked the dog out of the one I had on my K5, and still regret letting it go when I sold the truck. Although I haven’t been without a 4X4 since the K5, an 8274 just didn’t fit the trucks I had, but now that I have a 2 door JK I’m thinking if it doesn’t restrict too much air flow and I can find a bumper to hold it - 🤔

The in cab winch controls are great, I have them, but... never leave home without the remote cable one because you can’t spool the last inches of your winch in by yourself otherwise. You know when you are finished pulling and you’re putting the last of your winch line away, try doing that from your driver’s seat.

Great parts review. I'm unsure if those 21 ball bearings are supposed to run dry, no grease for them? Also, the left side of the spool hub, did that get inspected for any needs? Nice cable crimpers, I wonder if Matt will approve of not soldering the lugs as he did a video on three way to do lugs in the past. One was crimping only.
@jeremyrose7541
@jeremyrose7541 4 года назад
I did research as I was curious about the grease on the ball bearings. It is also a break Those are open to the environments and mud and dirt can easily get in there. So they say no grease. As for the cable crimpers wenches have a tendency to get hot so I did some adding up and figured out that solder melts before lead terminals do so I chose to just go with the crimp!
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 4 года назад
@@jeremyrose7541 Agreed on the no solder if it's going to melt first however, at least it will keep out any oxidation etc. up until the load gets to that point. My guess is, if the solder is warm enough to melt, that heat is likely not good for the rest of that circuit either.

I bet that new Optima battery doesn't last half (if your lucky) as long as the old battery did. Optima was a great product. That was until they sold out to Johnson Control and shipped production south of the boarder. Quality control went downhill fast. I personally have received shipments of BRAND NEW Optima batteries that were junk straight off the truck. Our shop started testing their batteries before we would even unload them. If they were dead we would reject the shipment. Hopefully they have fixed their issues and can return to be a great product that everyone remembers. Unfortunately I don't think they have yet. Let us know in a few months how its holding up!

Great video!!! So the ground bolt is on the bottom of the motor. Two of the bolts on the top are for the coils. Whats the 3rd bolt for? I googled it and it looked like a temperature cutout switch with a current limiter. I didn't see one on your setup, and if you had one your winch may not have blown up. Is that right? I may be confused. I never worked on a winch.

Lots of people in the offroad game like to tell you what their buddy's neighbor read on a forum post... So many AGMs to chose from now... If they really did suck like everyone complains about theyd go out of business. Maintenance is key on anything... like your winch ;) As far as deep cycle maintenance? The vehicle alternator (even my 220 amp) does not fully charge an agm. They are living their life at half charge. At least once a year, maybe more often... need to fully charge them. Call them maintenance free, but really just a different kind of maintenance now. Tender does the slow trickle charge. Its been good to me.

Glad your winch is working again! Don’t see many of these older winches anymore. And let us know how long the new optima last? I used to have great luck with them, I mean 10-15 years out of each one. Until they moved manufacturing.. After that I went back to the Walmart special because the cut in manufacturing cost clearly caused a huge cut in reliability. i just can’t get the optimas to last for crap now, one after another after another crapping out in 2-3 years, a couple even sooner barley a year. Now had they cost less then $100 id probably still be using them because it’s nice being able to mount them however. But they don’t, there over twice that. For a battery that doesn’t last If even as long as the $100 Walmart battery’s. Just not worth the huge loss in reliability in my opinion, especially considering they don’t go out like a normal battery anymore either. At least not in my experience anyways, every one I bought after the manufacturing move went out completely out of no where. They’d be working great one minute then not at all the next.. and they’d never work again after that.

I definitely can agree with you when they first moved their operations to Mexico. After that it seems that they have maybe gotten things under control. Cuz I just don't hear that many negatives anymore. But The Optimist have always been a great really strong battery until they died like you were saying. Nice having a super strong battery when your wenching! The kill switch really helped on my Jeep

hi, i like to share some mods on Warn 8274 that often used in Indonesia. Here, we are using warn 9.5XP Motor and replace the solenoid with Albright Contactor + gigglepin main shaft. hope it can be useful tips for you

Which motor did you use? I've seen that Warn now has an 8274 model with a more powerful motor to increase capacity from 8,000lbs to 10,000. I'm thinking of upgrading the motor on may 1978 winch.

Great video...... I relocated my relay box from the winch to under the hood where the old factory jack was stored, I just hammered flat the jack mount and zip tied that bitch to it... It's been working out great I also relocated my controller jack / plug to inside the cab mounting it on the under side of my center indicator panel right under my 4WD indicator light in my YJ. I'm with you on the light bar thing... I have a 52" El Cheapo and the damn thing has been awesome... Turn that bitch on at night and it's like looking into the freakin' sun...lol... I'm going to check out those Areolidz, I also have a 20" that I don't use much, I think I'm going to remove it...we'll see... I have my lights on a 4 channel remote. One remote velcro'd to the steering wheel and the other on the key chain so I can turn them on whenever. I get so many great comments about all the lights mounted all over..lol

Hi, was hoping your knowledge of a stock 8274 winch may be able to point me in the right direction. Got one on my 78 Fj40 and I’m able to spool out but when I try to spool in I just get a click. As to my knowledge all the wiring is stock just like yours.

You can just Google Albright solenoid for a winch! You never know what you might find.

The one that I used is a quick car racing kill switch! There are plenty of them them out there that work great. But if you want to run your went through one which I do not have that never mind. You want to make sure you have one that has super high amp rating. Well over four hundred amps!

Another comment also asked if I would touch on the kill switch when I do the in-cab winch controllers so I will touch on it then as well! Thanks
