I think the next watch will be some sort of JLC Reverso! I'm honestly surprised you don't have one in your collection considering your love for dress watches, how that watch suits your lifestyle and fashion wear and how different it is from your current collection. I think it makes perfect sense, just my $0.02 though.

Similar story. My dad had an old Ingersoll laying about that I had my eye on at the age of 6 or 7. He said if you learn to tell the time, you can have it. Well, I didn't need any more encouragement than that! It was too big, of course, but that only added to the charm of pretending to be a man. He put some new holes in the strap & I wore it around for ages. Always wonder what became of it. I'd like to think it's still around in some box in the attic.

The Rolex pieces are decent & the others have nice sentiment. A JLC ultrathin moon, a 1908 or else a Calatrava could be a nice add for the mature gent 👍🏻

I share a similar experience with a Seko dive watch that I bought for myself when I completed basic training (USAF) in 1985. It stayed on my wrist for over a decade until it started gaining time. I still have it but never had it repaired. Every time I look at it, it brings back memories (mostly good ones) Thanks Ash!

Great journey you took us on here. I have an explorer in 36mm and then I got the green dial OP. I don’t really wear the explorer now as the fit of the OP is so much better for me. Been considering selling it as you did. I’d love a rootbeer one day. That’s my “grail watch” so to speak. Something about the colour tones just speaks to me!

I really wish I’d kept some of my early watches. My first watch was a simple digital watch bought for Xmas by my parents. It was a Phollisonic. Not sure if I spelt that right. Been obsessed with watches ever since. I have about 20 now.

Ash, I enjoyed your watch journey, as it is similar to mine. I started with a mechanical Timex as a boy, my parents bought me a Seiko almost identical to yours (mine has a rectangular case). I traded my Sub and my DJ for a perfect 18238 Day Date, box and papers, just back from a complete overhaul service at Rolex. I kept my Explorer, my green dial OP36 and my Tudor BB58. I am done buying watches now that I have my grail. Cheers!

Great collection! We both have a few of the same timepieces. It is wonderful that you actually WEAR & USE these watches! You don’t baby them and let them sit in the drawer! Same here! And while it still pains me to slowly put scratches on them, I have come to appreciate this as part of the natural beauty and patina of wearing a fine timepiece. Cheers!

I’m a little bit in the same boat as you with being a little bored, well not bored but a little missing with Rolex and I’m finding the Cartier tank and the jlc reverso very enticing. I’d possibly sell the Pepsi to free up funds then add a nice reverso to the collection. Great vid 👍

An interesting and enjoyable presentation. Timex and Tissot where my first and second watches. Owned and discarded many other watches during the intervening years. Expensive and not so. These days I only ever keep 3 wearable watches. When shooting waterfalls and rugged landscapes with a camera of course, then there is no more comfortable, reliable and stress free icon than a Lorus lumibrite on a Nato. I'll send you my calendar at Christmas.

I don't agree though that Cartier can be regarded as a "lesser" brand vs. Rolex. Cartier, like JLC, IWC are for those in the "know" with no aspirations to be a rapper. The Rolexes are cool and having two GMT masters - wow, what a feat. Lovely collection, well done. We're all envious!

I especially enjoyed your reminiscences, Ash, about the watches you owned as a child, adolescent, and young adult. Of your luxury watch collection, I especially appreciate your Datejust with the blue dial, and your recent acquisition of the Cartier Santos. I don't think I even owned a watch as a child, but by my high school years, I acquired a 1953 Omega "bumper" automatic from my maternal grandfather, and I wore that exclusively until I purchased my Rolex Datejust, back in 2008.

Ash you have an amazing back story to all the watches and I'm so impressed you have back to age 6! Wow! My history only goes back to my college years as before that I wore cheap Timex iron man watches that would break every year or so and I would toss them and just buy another for $40. My entry into real watches began in 1998 with a quartz Tag Heuer which I still have today!

I really love your channel, mostly watch content is what I follow. Your take on Rolex is so straight forward and so relatable even though I never got to buy one retail. I steered towards omega and one Tudor watch. But in the future I will continue to steer away towards Cartier or JLC instead. Interesting video. I too started with a manual wind watch at about 6yobut a few years later pestered my parents into getting me what was a ladies LED watch, which were the 'cool' thing to have but had plummeted in price so that they were affordable, probably because everyone realised that having to press a button to see the time was a rubbish idea! For your next watch, have you considered a British microbrand? Farer do cases that are in between square and round (eg the Tonneau), or if you can live with another round case, AnOrdain with their amazing enamel dials?

First watch an Ingersoll like yours, then two manual wind Seikos followed by a Casio digital which was always set to the 24hr. clock. My first “ expensive “ watch was a Seiko quartz chronograph with a second time zone/alarm function which I bought in 1969. I wore it 24/7 for 20 years, it ran at minus 19s/yr. and still does ,the current battery has been in this watch for 14 yrs. when I thought it was too scratched I bought another Seiko chronograph because I had to time a lot of tests at work. Some time later I bought my first automatic watch , a green Seiko Alpinist . After that the madness started , German, Swiss, Chinese, Russian, followed by a large Zenith collection but that is another story. Why any of this would be of any interest to anyone but ourselves is odd but we are lifelong watch enthusiasts.

Interesting video. I really wish that I could display all the watches I’ve owned, but sadly, I have no idea what has become of most of them. Like you, I am fascinated with time and timepieces. I know that I owned a Timex when I was young, possibly my first watch. I think it may have been a gift from my parents. At some point I bought a Casio digital watch that I wore for several years. I wanted a nicer looking watch when I was in my early twenties and got a Citizen quartz that I liked a lot. It’s still around somewhere in the house and I really need to find it. After that I had a couple non-descript watches until I treated myself to my first “good” watch. It was a Tissot PR50 that I still have and love and wear as a dress watch. Very recently (like, 3 weeks ago) my wife wanted to buy me a special gift for our anniversary and I chose a Seiko GMT automatic.

Ash, I love all the watch videos you done, from reviews to current SOTC, but seeing the full boat of everything you have is great! I know you moved your explorer 36 on for the Santos, but you still feel a little out on the hype of GMT-Master II despite having the Rootbeer and Pepsi for a few good years now. I know your DJ is your first and favorite Rolex you have, how often are you wearing both your DJ and Pepsi these days? Did you find the explorer great but still somewhat redundant with the DJ (I know you did multiple videos on the explorer and one comparing it to the DJ, I just forget if that was brought up). I think the Explorer 36 is damn near perfect and the ultimate one-watch-collection and GADA watch, which would make it harder to wear other watches on a regular basis. I feel like if i were to save up for a black dial Rolex (already having a blue-fluted motif DJ36 fluted bezel/jubilee bracelet), the smarter move would be to trade by Black Bay Pro and work towards the Bruce Wayne GMT vice the Explorer 36. The goal would be to pass down the next Rolex to my son when he turns 18, and I get torn between the Exp36 and the Bruce Wayne. Both can be used for basically anything, but the GMT has the extra function and capabilities that give it the edge. As much as I love the Pepsi, I already have enough red and blue in my collection and the the BW would go with everything due to black/grey and splash of green.

Great collection, particularly the first two. I, too, have my military watch, the one I wore during the final decade of service. It's an Aquatech digital piece that I purchased in the PX for $20 or $25....can't recall the price. But it wasn't expensive. It's dead now & sits in its own wee watchbox, happily retired like me. Just out of curiosity, what prompted you to get a photo of you getting a ticket (or warning? from a Texas State trooper? Odd thing to do.....but glad you did.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 23 дня назад
I still have the ticket, as I stuck it into my journal of that trip, I've just dug it out and can clarify the details: It was issued about 75 miles west of Forth Worth on a 650 mile driving stint from El Paso. It was the 8th Nov 2004 at 6:01pm on the I-20 road. The officer was a chap called Lattimore and the violation was for: 1) Speed exceeding 70MPH. 2) Fail to signal lane change. When I showed the chap my licence he noted my UK Police badge in my wallet and it became a written warning. Nice chap - almost 20-years ago!

SECONDA is NOT a britisch brand. It was one of the brands for exported watches from Soviet Union. Just open the case and you'll spot the USSR movement with most likely Kyrill charachters on it. However, the quality was not bad, defenetely the best quality you could get for the little money they used to ask for. No wonder it is still running

"Numbers depicting the hours." It seems like that is the job of watches, but these days everyone wants a watch that works hard at not telling the time. I can't get into all the face complications, the gross outer dial numbers that stand out more than the hour numbers, or the watches that are more heart monitor than watch. Roman numerals is about as low as I'd go. A watch that tells the time is the watch for me. lol

Great collection Ash, but I wondered, if you were to sell another Rolex, do you think you may invest in a made to measure suit from a reputable tailor or something like that?

Yes, my dalliance with Rolex has now ended and I have become somewhat underwhelmed by the brand. I would certainly sell one of the GMT models and would consider something sartorial as a reward.

Hi Ash! My dream watch is the Rolex date just 36 blue motif jubilee bracelet. Any advise where I could get it at a good price in the UK? I heard Japan too offers good price.

They are becoming much more accessible now, as Rolex loses traction in the retail market and models are arriving in AD stores and heading straight into the windows. Good luck on your watch journey

Always go homage, rather than fake There are so many good micro brands, that will give the style, look, without faking

Hi Ash, should I get a Rolex GMT master or Rolex Kermit as my first luxury watch. Want to know your thoughts

All depends on how intend to wear it. Do you want it for everyday wear? Then, the right watch will depend on what clothes you wear during the day. Or, do you want it for after work or casual wear? Then, it will depend on how you spend your leisure time and the activities you enjoy.

Personally, I think the GMT sits better on the typical wrist and is more practical in daily life. The Sub is iconic, but for most people the GMT will be a watch they will get more use out of in most situations.

@@TheChapsGuide that’s quite helpful Ash. Will keep these points in mind while making the final call.
