Fantastic collection Kris. You really do love them. I am familiar with Chocolate and Cheese from start to finish. The rest I am not. I remember one of the live show highlights from that album was "Buenas Tardes Amigo" was it not? Freedom of 76 is great. Perfect choice to play at your wedding. Dean and Gene surely knew how to write catchy songs. So they are back together now? You have excellent taste in music Kris. One thing that I have realized about some of the bands that you have enjoyed for a longtime. Is that each one of them has brilliant songwriters. Especially Ray Davies~ Rob/Boston

I had this conversation once with Metal Theologian that he said he never pays attention to the lyrics - but I said I almost ALWAYS do - a bad lyric will ruin a song, no matter how good the playing is. Buenas Tardes Amigo is SUCH a good song... is it crossing the line now? If Apu can't be done anymore, can this? I don't have an answer - I'm too old and disqualify myself from the conversation.

Another band I’ve never heard of, that you’ve managed to make me aware of. Love hearing the memories of going to concerts with Marissa after work years ago….you always keep it interesting. Hope all is well with everyone on the farm 😊 Theresa

One of the most exciting things we did was clean up "my" bathroom which is part of the master bedroom. Bleached everything, scrubbed everything, new shower basket, new mats, fixed the leaking spigot, fixed the leaking shower, bought a few other things - the thrills when you become 50!

I saw Ween at the first Bonnaroo festival in 2002. I was completely unfamiliar with them. Seems like the people who knew their music were really excited about seeing them. I enjoyed it but couldn't really get a grip on it because they were kind of wide-ranging in their sound. I've sampled a couple of the links you left up there; I also watched Roses Are Free from the Bonnaroo show I went to. It all sounds good - I may delve into some Ween. So much music....lol...thanks for the overview!

That is the one thing - they love genre hopping so much that it can be hard to pin down, well, what IS their sound. It isn't satire as such, it is sort of like when Frank Zappa does doo-wop; his love for the music is there despite the goofiness. Same thing with Ween - their prog taking-the-piss is done out of love, first and foremost. White Pepper is probably the most consistent all around and less goof (but still there and not taking themselves too seriously).

Nice one, you go deep with these guys. We used to play The Pod on vinyl at 45 rpms while "exploring altered states" in the early 90's. Haha! I also know and have jammed with the guy who did the cover for White Pepper, artist and drummer named Jon Weiss. Have you checked out Gene's Billy Joel tribute?
@dixielandfarm
@dixielandfarm 5 месяцев назад
I have checked it out - its fun stuff, but nothing I would want to sit through the entire thing of - I love on one of the live albums they do Piano Man for just a verse and chorus and then torpedo the thing, which to me is just the perfect amount. I still haven't bothered seeking out the Rod McKuen covers. Hope you are doing good - next video I need to make will be about Daniel Johnston!

I actually have a soft spot for some of those Rod McKuen records, definitely a niche appeal. Looking forward to the Daniel Johnston vid, I still have those cherished cassettes! @@dixielandfarm

I found that out afterwards - but I guess we can say they are outliers of Philly and be accurate enough. Let me know what you think!

@@dixielandfarm I enjoyed your takes on their records and generally feel the same way. The sweet spot really is that mid 90s - 2000 period. I’ll say that even records i don’t love, like Quebec, still have a few enjoyable tracks on them like Happy Colored Marbles. There are some great tracks on Shinola 1. I saw Ween in Philly about 8 years ago at an outdoor show at Penns Landing. Really fun and as you said, great live band. I was surprised how solid Deaner was on guitar live. Around the same time i saw “Gene Ween does Billy Joel” at Underground Arts in Philly, really fun gig as well and good little band he put together for that. I don’t think Gener is that great of a singer to be honest, at least anymore, so the Billy Joel thing was mostly a novelty. Brian

@@blackbeansandrice344 I adore the live albums (legit or boots) - showing they really knew how to play. I shot this a month ago and Deaner has made an announcement he has to step away for mental health reasons - either now he is in the situation Gene was in or they can’t stand each other is my guess. Glad I saw them when I did, but I always kept an eye out for local shows because I would have seen them again.

Hey Kris, These guys sound fascinating...a no-limits or no-borders kind of group it sounds. I'm liking what I've sampled so far here. "P*ss up a rope" was allegedly one of my grandfather's (whom I've never met) favorite sayings. 🙂As ever, learn a lot from your artist profiles. Looking forward to listening further and reporting back. -Carm

They are huge talents - I shot this a month or so ago, and since then one of the members has quit/taken a break due to stresses on him and his family - I think touring or personalities got too much for him, which is strange since they only play a handful of shows a year now. I am very passionate about this band - I am so glad you have liked what you sampled. They are hard to pin down because they can cross over so many genres song to song. Take care, Carm!

I tried with the Moistboyz but in never did make it into my rotation, Bill. Quebec I probably need to give another visit again, but sometimes you get these opinions and you can't shake them, no matter what. Thanks so much for watching and coming up to the surface!

Hi Kris. I have great memories of my first band recording our songs on a four-track. Too bad they were utter shit. I've never heard Ween. Years ago Damon Albarn confusingly mentioned 'Ween' in the same sentence as 'Slanted and Enchanted' (referring to what he'd been listening to), and it took me years to work out that 'Ween' wasn't referring to some obscure album by Pavement. I'll add them to the list, though I started trying to listen to the 'Guided By Voices' catalogue a while back and gave up after the second album, so I'm not making any promises.
@dixielandfarm
@dixielandfarm 5 месяцев назад
I STILL have my four track - just last week I thought about mailing it to a friend who I know would actually use it - I've used garageband on the ipad for years at this point, and I actually have an unopened Maxell II 90 minute tape pack that I think sells for $90USD online at this point. This exact friend was a huge GBV fan - I really have tried over the years but I can't get into them. But, some things really are frozen in time or at an age - I was a huge early Sebadoh fan, but other than Sebadoh III (which is still pretty rough around the edges and similar to early GBV), I don't think I would enjoy it at this point. Ween/The Pod might also have some of that challenge, but the rest of it is just golden. White Pepper is the one I think you will connect with and love - its the one I send most people to. Chocolate and Cheese would be second, after.

I know of Ween, pretty sure I had one CD but never listened to it. Does the humor still hold up Kris
@dixielandfarm
@dixielandfarm 5 месяцев назад
Some does, some doesn't. I think the misogyny doesn't hold up, I think some doesn't hold up because I am not that age anymore (but would for anyone who IS in that age bracket) because I can't relate anymore, but the childish potty humor DOES hold up because that type of juvenile humor never really goes out of style - a fart joke is a fart joke. But not everything they did was that - just like everything Zappa did wasn't always a sex deviant song - but enough of it is there to be a barrier who can't hang or look past that. Really everyone can handle the trinity of albums I mentioned, but it takes a special person to sing along to the lyrics of "Mister Would You Please Help My Pony" - let me demonstrate - "Mister would you please help my pony? He is down and he aint getting up. He's coughing up snot in the driveway, and I think his lung's fucked up."

Hi Kris, i know very little about Ween but i still have my UK OGs (hate that term) of country greats and C+C (had titty poster but seems to have gone missing). I have never further investigated so this'll help. I dunno if humour dates if i still like it just means I'll probably be cancelled and only laugh with other people my age. I'm planning a new Vinyl Scavenger release with some of my gathered prose/poetry not sure how funny it'll be but i have this need to put out and inflict upon planet earth. Cheers, Martin.

I've brought this topic up a few times - like laughing at old Eddie Murphy standup - I still might but that is probably because I'm reliving my childhood and nostalgia, but if I took a carbon copy of the text and applied it to someone new starting out, I wouldn't find it funny. I often wonder is that the same with music and certainly with content like this - it gets wired into a time and place for you. The song Ohio by CSNY meant more to people at that moment than it does now, for example. I heartily endorse you subjecting the world to your prose, but that might be the Vogon lover in me.
