Glad you had a good time and had fun, Kris. Funny that Mayo is "a 45 guy" now (I don't watch him); when I travel by plane I only shop for 45s because flying with records is a PITA (to me). Cheers, Tom
Thanks Mr. Wonderful. Ah amusing stories of records going missing etc. Well 7 years working in a record shop it happened quite a bit. Aside from having to photocopy guns and roses cd/tape sleeves (to stop people stealing them) I think we sold off cheap when we couldn't find them.
Its great to see you with Mean Mr Mayo. Sorry about your record. I did that in a record store once. I thought i bought a record but didn’t. Im sure you will find that record. Enjoyed the video.
First time I had that happen to me, but I was really focused on Joe, my friend, and just being there - buying records was just the excuse to be there. That store is a gem.
Thanks Jeff! I will just keep an eye on their FB page and see if they ever get a copy in, or if I go digging again (pretty much thats the only place I look for vinyl now).
So cool that you got to get together with Mean Mr. Mayo. Too bad about Sunflower but Yellow Balloon should be great. I have the song on a couple comps but don't have the whole album Steve Douglas must be very proud. I think the second Country Joe record is about as good as the first so I respectfully disagree that the first one is the only one you need. It's awesome that you got to go visit and had fun doing it. Rock on Kris!
Believe it or not, the song "How Can I Be Down" is better than the title track. Steve Douglas (I butchered that on here calling him Don Douglas)... but I actually rarely watched that show - I really have seen him more as a mousekeer (had the first season on DVD of Clubhouse). Luckily I have the second and third Country Joe albums, so I am set!
Evening Kris. I have to admit, I haven't heard of any of those artists, maybe they were more popular in the States. Chuffed for you that you found some bargains. I can't imagine how gutted you were that the record was missing when the postman arrived. Fingers crossed for you that it comes along soon. All the best for now, Floss.
It definitely was a let down, but these things happen - and it isn't like I DON'T have that record, just not on vinyl. Richard Thompson was in Fairport Convention, a UK band, in the late 60s. Dennis Wilson was in the Beach Boys, so you probably know those two, at least - but definitely not their popular period. Hope you are doing well, Floss!
Never heard of the Flock album Kris. Crenshaw is always at a low price. In the 80s I could find very cheap Richard Thompson Shoot Out the Lights but then most things were cheaper as CDs took off. Nice batch of r3cords to file away and not listen to haha
Oh, the plan is to leave them on the floor for a couple of years, never listen to them, then file them away. I remember seeing the Crenshaw album everywhere, but it keeps popping up in the VC so I decided to finally get it. I will probably digitize it and listen to it soon.
I think I told you the story about going into Goodwill and finding seven Richard Thompson albums together. Someone must have just donated them all. I grabbed them. One of them is the album you are holding. But I did get "Bright Lights" and "Henry the Human Fly" out of the deal for a dollar. At least you got a few Beach Boys signatures on the Sunflower jacket. Or was it the previous owners? It would have been great if it was Carl, Dennis and Brian's signatures on it. Speaking of Dennis. I am smiling on your compliment of POB. I love it myself. <> I have a lot of history in NY. Queens and the city more than Long Island. But I do remember going to Hammerheads and the Coliseum often in the seventies and eighties. Way to go Kris. Nice to see that you visited your old kicking grounds~ Rob/Boston
You did tell me that story - and talk about right place and right time. As for the Sunflower signatures - nobody in the "real" band that I know of, so I really don't know who these people are; they must have been the hired help. POB is fantastic - I have had it digitally since the 90s, but never grabbed a vinyl copy since I had the CD. Then when I wanted it after I started recollecting, that's when it became harder to find (cheaply). Joe's store always prices very fairly - I am just going to keep an eye out on their FB page for Sunflower to show up again. The Feel Flows album is fine, but I'd rather have something cut from the analog tapes in my collection.
Hey Kris, Good you got to go back home, visit with Joe, and get some tunes. Major bummer about the missing one though! Indeed, someday...I like Sunshine Pop, though haven't explored enough of it. Sweet stuff all around here. Showing these and Country Joe and the Fish is making me even more rabidly nostalgic than I already am. 🙂 I still want to get to New York one day...A couple of friends made through YT live in northern Jersey near the border. Thanks for sharing, and happy spins when you get to them. -Carm
I have a bit of sunshine pop, but I am not versed enough to actually talk about it. It is right there next to baroque pop, which I am an even bigger fan of, but can't rattle off the names like I could have 10 years ago. I found once I turned 50, things mush together way more than they use to. It always impressed my dad that I could remember director and actors names and their filmography and he couldn't. I now found I have lost that ability, and its always "that guy who was in that thing". Those details that mattered seem to matter less as you go on, so keep room for other things.
Only until I moved away was I ok with ketchup on the sandwich - it isn't a make or break for me, but salt/pepper is. It still blew my mind that sandwich and a coffee was $11.
I feel your pain Kris! I gave up trying to use Unix because it feels so fragile and I just dont get the way it thinks . . . . for me, not worth the stress. Well done on sorting it - though I suspect if X Plane had not worked your hardware might have felt the blunt end of your boot 🤔. Any ham stuff lately? Im getting into 6 metres slowly as it looks good for DX this winter.
It gets easier, Julian... now that I have it all squared away it is just humming along without me having to do a thing... and will stay that way until next upgrade. HOWEVER, one thing didn't work on xplane and I had to compile something to make it work - took two minutes, even shared my results with the community, but still - a moment. ZERO ham stuff in the past few years - flight simming took up all of my free time, and actually the antennas have been wrecked in various storms. I would have to rebuild the hexbeam and my wire vertical, but since the desire hasn't been there, I just haven't done it.
And time heals all wounds - I would now say the upgrade went fairly well with just three things broken that were easy to fix, forgetting the hours of frustration. BUT, other than the grub thing (which I should have picked the default option), it was just my speciality programs that had an issue, so it technically went ok.
@@dixielandfarm I wonder how the experience differs if you start the upgrade using the GUI tools vs. the shell. My guess is it makes most of those decisions for you if you use the GUI tools, so GRUB wouldn't have broken. Maybe.
The one time I did it from the GUI, it made it worse, because the GUI is just a wrapper for what I did, but it hides stuff, so it is still asking questions, but then gets translated into a prettier format, but the screen itself was basically blank due to the upgrade (you could sort of see what it was asking, but then formatting poorly into the gui window).
@@dixielandfarm I see, my only experience with upgrading Linux distributions is moving from Fedora releases, which are released every 6 months or so - very small changes in the interim, breakage is rare - everything else I do is either a rolling release like CentOS Stream, or requires/strongly recommends a reload like RHEL.
The way I use MSFS, it only provides the graphics. I use Aerowinx PSX for the actual simulation of the B747 (the airplane I fly the most) since that is more realistic and detailed than any addon in any sim I've ever seen in the market, and it is able to integrate with MSFS so that MSFS provides only the visuals. I used P3D before that, but MSFS is just a massive jump in visuals over everything else and since I don't need the flight model, it works perfectly for my needs. Other than that, I just play DCS.
I did - and I am glad it is done. Not much has changed in the upgrade, which makes it less noticeable, but little things like my video editor - it got upgraded and I noticed some differences... things like that.
Hey there Kris. I am going to echo the words of Bill at the Vinylverse. Just from watching you figure out any computer related things in previous videos. I would bet on you to succeed with this one. Now can you use the Ubuntu operating system at the same time you are using Windows? Also. If you are using both of them. Which one do you feel would offer better security? I guess that we can never know enough about technology. It is changing all the time. You are a wizkid Kris~ Rob/Boston
Ubuntu definitely has the better security - and the way I have it with the virtual machines, yup - a window has windows running while the rest of the computer is Ubuntu. So, as far as my accounting program knows, it is a small computer from the late 90s running Quickbooks. One year (2018?) I wrote down all the essential programs I use and the tweaks are all mostly in a folder that I can copy over - so if I had to start from scratch, I could. But, funny thing, as time marches on I require less and less of this stuff because the phone/tablets/firetv does 90% of it just fine. I am still surprised that someone hasn't built a dock for a phone that you put in and it has a keyboard/mouse and an output to a monitor/tv - then you would see people start ditching laptops at that point.
Sounds like it was a long day for you Kris. Glad you got everything upgraded and back to working in the end. For most of the video I just kept saying how does he know all of this stuff. I’m always impressed with your knowledge and perseverance. You’ve got mad problem solving skills.
Yup - it was rough - luckily I was able to keep most of it in perspective. But the real challenge is knowing how to sort through the noise to zero in on the actual issue or solution - its all there, you just have to spot it. The boot issue was semi my fault (I should have taken the defaults and then changed them to what I had), and the tv database issue I knew there was some kind of configuration error happening, but I have never encountered an old folder hanging something up - I know for next time, though!
I recently attempted to use Kubuntu on an old rig of mine. Everything worked out of box kind of the wifi adapter ran at a slow speed and my graphics card would only run at 30hz so I ran all updates no improvement then I turned on the proprietary NVIDIA driver and that broke sound and networking then sadly I reinstalled Windows defeated.
The two biggest issues for Ubuntu, or just Linux in general are wifi adapters and Nvidia. When they work, they just work - but when they don't, it can be a real hassle, even for computer nerds. Wifi cards often are propriety and that's why default modules fail. Nvidia is closed source, and when the additional drivers are enabled, you still have to poke around to see what driver is best. I use HDMI with my 4060ti (and 1660ti), so it SHOULD work, but sometimes you also have to screw around with bios settings with the Nvidia cards. AMD has no issues - but then some AMD cards have issues with certain subsystems (zink, opengl) and also, gross, AMD....
Hey Kris, I didn't know there was hissy fits and crying in computer upgrading... 🙂Actually, never having been much of a computer person in general, if I had to go through all that who knows what mental state I'd end up in, ha! 95% plus of what I do internet-wise is on my little Dell Chromebook...so it's all quite basic. Well, I'm glad it all worked out ultimately there, and hope it's now Dixieless-stressed-farm. -Carm
Oh yeah - and pure fear. Especially when it has everything you worked hard on be in the balance. Music, videos I made, etc... now all of that is backed up - but to get the computer back to the point where I had it is quite an ordeal. Believe it or not, your chromebook is linux - it just hides all that stuff from you. Me, I'm right in it. BUT, having all the gory guts exposed is exactly why I can fix it - on a Mac it would be, nope broken - try again. Here, at least, I was able to fix what broke. Glad its all working now - it was a tough weekend with Marissa gone and having to do barn stuff, and then tackle all of this - but I made it!
Still ended up working on the farm, of course, but got a bit done. Gave a dog a bath, gave myself a bath - fixed up the remnants of the computer upgrade, even installed a new firetv in the bedroom (in case we need to watch tv when we are sick or something).
I LOVE the farm videos! You guys are such a great team. That darn “Debbie” ruined our cruise as well, BUT she did get down that tree for you 😂 always happy to watch. Hope you both are well (I think I counted 3 shirt changes) 😂😂😂 Take care Kris and say hello to Marissa. We just got back from Universals….had a lot of fun and RAIN ☔️ 😊
We are doing great, and yup, I believe it was a three shirt job. The rain can be harder at Universal since more of the park is outdoors. We are finally getting to the home stretch of our vacation. Have our Covid boosters this weekend so we can be ready for when we leave. Glad you had a good trip!
I know this debate Is over by now but I'll have to say this, when I went back to X-Plane 11 and started tweaking It with all of the Important addons like Sim Heaven, Auto Ortho, X-Enviro I wanted to compare it with MSFS, lets say my result was shocking. Scenery : first I went to check my hometown and city where I live In, I compared the OSM data and saw the Sim Heaven had a more correct height and color of buildings, In MSFS all the buildings were strangely tall like a 7 8 story building, and the looked all brown thinking which Is Incorrect, If you go and check "Algiers" In google, they look nothing like MSFS, this has to do with generalization of auto gen buildings In certain continents. Details : Also in Sim Heaven all the religious places were there like mosques and churches with the correct modeling, In the other hand MSFS sees them as normal houses with a flat roof, le mémorial du martyr Is there In X-Plane thanks to Sim Heaven X-Africa, while In MFS It doesn't exist, ports are non existent In MSFS too. Graphics : the LOD In MSFS Is pretty horrible, I have It Increased to 200 and It still looks disgustingly blurry, I tried to tweak the Nvidia control panel, disabled teredo as It was recommended to do so by the forums, yet It still looks bad, the photogrammetry far and up close Is a nightmare, the clouds In MSFS looks like a world on fire mind you I play In ULTRA settings. Physics : when It comes to physics X-Plane wins all the time, as someone who flies the 737 most of the time In my videos for example, I am pretty familiar with It, I compared the Zibo which Is a FREE product and 737 PMDG which Is payware, Zibo when taxing felt more challenging and had more Input delay, when I steer my nose too much It drifts off, so I kind of have to build a muscle memory so I can know when to stop, PMDG In the other hand Is pretty sharp to a stupid level, when I give thrust, Zibo has to take sometime to start moving, PMDG moves Instantly and sometimes pretty rapidly to a level that I have to brake so It won't go too far, on TO/GA, Zibo took a longer time to lift off as I didn't give her a strong thrust setting, PMDG was pretty fast and took off earlier, while flying the Zibo had a less comfortable feeling of control, while PMDG was more on rails My opinion : I think there Is no point on me using MSFS, when I say stuff like this I wasn't trying to convince anyone to use X-Plane, but rather what I have experienced, now when I have sim that preforms well, can be easily modified so I can make It look gorgeous and might come to my benefit In VFR flying, and a nice Implementation of physics, I think that sim Is X-Plane and It wins
The title could have been Debbie Does Damage. She really did a number on the workshop! 😜 Anyway that was a good kick - glad to dee the knee is holding up well. Cheers! Tom
Oh yeah, the knee is still kicking. I have had a goal to just take a day off of work and fix that workshop - but wasps have taken over and I already went through three cans to get rid of the nests - problem is they also made nests inside the ceiling that I can't get to - so I will have to wait until it cools down - but then I will complain it's too cold!
Funny films yes seen them all i think except the Rutles no idea why not. There's similar to spinal tap callec Bad News featuring British actors you'd know. Rock/metal. Some funny lines in it. I am just in the process of making/sample and prose/poetry based album which is gonna be probably extremely stupid (more to follow).
I have a single from Bad News - only saw bits of it... it was very hard to get/see here - while The Young Ones was popular on MTV here, Bad News played maybe once at midnight or something like that, along with one of the other shows Adrian and Rik did.
Damn that Debbie. The fence piece of equipment to pound in fence post looks like a lot of darn work. You need an attachment for a tractor that will pound that into the ground. What a job, thank god Debbie got you to do the fence. She was a blessing g after all
They have a hammer drill attachment to do ground rods, but I still haven't found one for the T-Posts. I do try to wait until after it rains to make the job a bit easier, but sometimes you just have to do it when you have to do it.
Excellent run down of their spiral into the veiled blackened abyss. An unsuspecting America never knew that the Andy Williams Show was a gateway to darkness, debauchery, and excess. Bonus points for staying in character for seven and a half minutes!
Thanks so much - no script, so this was all just me talking. Or was it some divine spirit talking through me to expose the cabal of evil that band has perpetuated, infiltrating the entire Mormon church, and dare I say, the entire government as we know it?
Darn you Debbie to heck! To heck I say!!! One good thing about where I live is we never have to worry about hurricanes etc but we do sometimes get tornados and the corn it's everywhere! And highly suspicious I don't trust that corn not one little bit.
I cannot believe that the Destructive Debbie dropped by the farm. Even she got to see the farm before me. {smile} Sorry to see and hear what happened Kris. Hard to believe that you guys had some bad weather after looking at the beautiful blue sky and sun shining on the farm. <> You were throwing those fence timbers like they were toothpicks. I enjoyed seeing the electric fence tester and everything else that you and Marissa got done. How you put in the steel post was cool. That device you use hammers it down pretty easy. It looks easy from here anyways. {smile} I half painted my deck yesterday. It was supposed to thunderstorm/rain so I stopped. But it never did either. I enjoyed this whole nine plus minutes Kris. Lots of fun~ Rob/Boston
That fence post driver - I did cut my finger tip off with it once - was pounding in a post and it slipped and it was like an axe - the tip got separated from the bone, so, like uncapping a pen. They fixed it, but the side of that fingertip is numb now. Last year I also tore up my hand using it - my had was sweaty so it ended up peeling a layer off. BUT, yup - so much easier driving those posts in, which is why we are basically moving over to it - we used to aesthetically think wood looked nicer, but we just leave that for the drive up to the farm - everything else the metal ones are more practical.
We do have that much fun - we are one of the few couples who enjoy working with each other - and why we have been together for 24 years. Fencing is only half as sexy as hosing down manure.
Hey Kris, Marissa and fur kid. Debbie was being a real dow....no, I'm not gonna say it....🙂 You two made this appear more fun than it must have been, especially in the heat. We have our own heatwave now, though probably not much compared to there. A friend of mine who also lives in your state refers to it as being "soupy" lately. Keep cool. -Carm
Ha! Luckily or unluckily, we have done this a bunch of times so it goes fairly quickly for us - but it still takes hours to do - but the nice thing is it is almost always an improvement over what was there. We have a few more sections we plan on doing in the fall to finish up the rest of the fence that could be an issue down the road. Funny enough, my seasonal depression was starting to kick in because I had to wear pants in the morning - it was unseasonably cold for a few days, even saw some leaves falling - but we are back up to a heat index of 100, so I feel better already.
Hey man, i know you're rocking KDE on Linux. What Distro are you running? Is it running Wayland or X11? Not here to bash your gpu choice, 4060TI is great for what it does, but how are those nvidia drivers running on your system? I heard that Nvidia traditionally runs better for Xplane than AMD, but you know nvidia and Linux have a history...
Using Kubuntu 22.04 right now, I heard the 24.04 LTS has been delayed a few weeks, so I haven't upgraded. Using X11. Nvidia works perfectly fine on my system, and yes, I have heard Nvidia works better with Xplane than other drivers/cards. The drivers are super easy in Ubuntu - though for almost a year, anytime there was a kernel upgrade I would be pushed into a 800X600 desktop and it took a long time to figure out to put it in the generic driver and then back to get the normal desktop working (but that stopped being necessary a year ago). It really just pulls the driver as it becomes available and I don't need to think a thing about it.
I think Ian and Sylvia is the folk-singing couple. Does Little Shop of Horrors feature Rick Moranis? If yes, I saw it. Best In Show is one of my favorites. I like the song about terriers. Congratulations on finding the record!
That was the name I couldn't get - Ian and Sylvia! And yes, Rick Moranis is in Little Shop of Horrors. I think you would love this movie - see if you can find it on one of your streaming services.
I've never listened to more than a few minutes of Wagner in my life, it just doesn't appeal on any level. Mahler is the same, I've tried many times to listen to his symphonies but I can't get past the first couple of minutes of Germanic marching music. I've been buying a couple of classic records here and there, though now my dad's gone I've kind of inherited his huge collection of classical CDs which I'm still trying to get to. He didn't like opera though so I don't think there's much of that in the collection. Good point about watching opera, I'll have to give that a go some day. I usually get annoyed by people dissing Beatles for Sale but I'll let you off just this once.
Yup - Opera is an experience, the records of it are just soundtracks and are missing 66% of it. While our US Beatles albums butcher the catalog, there is something to be said for some of 64 and 65 reordering - Rubber Soul is almost better (though I didn't grow up with the US version, I had the proper UK version), and Beatles 65 might better For Sale as a listening experience.
@@dixielandfarm I saw someone show Beatles for Sale during a vinyl tag a few years ago as an example of 'a bad record by a great band'. To me, the presence of 'No Reply', 'I'll Follow the Sun', 'I Don't Want to Spoil the Party', 'Every Little Thing', 'I'm a Loser' and even 'What You're Doin'' makes that a ludicrous statement, and that's before you get one of their most exciting covers in 'Rock and Roll Music'. 'Mr Moonlight', 'Honey Don't' and 'Everybody's Trying to be My Baby' have a lot to answer for.
I don't think I know of this film. Really like Christopher Guest.. he did the film about the dog show (Best in Show) too I think? A Mighty Wind looks good fun, I'll see if I can Netflix it. Can't believe I've never owned the Rutles album, in fact I've never actually owned a copy of the film either though I have seen it of course. I saw Neil Innes give a talk at Abbey Road studios back in the day when they opened the place up to the public. Ah you mentioned Best in Show, I should have waited.
That's right - he did Best in Show. I hope you can stream it - it is a really good movie, almost equal to Best in Show. The Rutles movie you can find probably on YT and any Beatles fan should watch it - let me know if you find either!
I prefer the acessibility of MSFS. I don't wanna spend money on a PC and expensive peripherals just to enjoy flying a cessna around. I had basically given up on flight simulator genre until MSFS dropped on xbox (and most importantly, with proper gamepad controls). Sure it's not the peak of realism, but it can bridge the gap between people whose computer rooms look more like fighter jet cockpits and the average joe like me who just happens to like planes.
That's definitely great - for me, this is the closest I can get to being in the plane, with all of its frustrations, which is EXACTLY what I want; I don't have the time and don't want to spend the money maintaining a PPL, but I do want that experience and learning as close as possible, so that is why XP works for me.
Hi, Great to see you bought a album. I really miss your vinyl videos. Maybe sometime you could show us your collection? Even though I think you may have done that before???? Take care and enjoy the music
I actually spun some music last night and it was a lot of fun. I forgot how good my setup was! I will be making some, don't worry. I have one shot and ready to go up in a few weeks already!
Your mind is PACKED with so much musical knowledge….. it’s amazing to me! This was pretty interesting Kris…. I always learn something I didn’t know before 😊 Hope all is well on the farm, say hello to Marissa for me 👋 xo
Everything is great, but it is already cold enough to wear jeans in the morning when we are bringing the horses in, which has me depressed. We are built for Florida - the heat doesn't bother us, but even 50 degree weather is too cold for me now.
What type of software did you use to remap it? I used power toys and if I open notepad it definitely dials a 1 and 7 but when I load up flight sim it doesn’t seem to respond
Nice one Kris! I love the Mighty Wind! Nice to see the soundtrack on vinyl! Big fan of those Guest/McKean movies! I really like their style of humor. They have a good knowledge and respect for the characters and subjects they tackle. Hope all is well!! Cheers!
That was a great movie along with their dog show parade, Best of Show. So darn funny. I just can’t do folk music Kris but I am glad you love it. Really funny movie
Its a shame this is the last of those great movies from him, the two that came after have almost no humor and are such a disappointment. I think they didn't have Eugene Levy involved, so that must be why.
I used both, still end up sticking with MSFS because I personally care more about the scenery than I do about the minutia of the simulation physics. At least for me, I'm not trying to recreate 1 to 1 the complete minutia of flight or train for the real world, so I find MSFS (with addons) to be good enough for my purposes (which is just to have a chill experience and enjoy flying in pretty environments). I think both games lack a tad more gamification though, a career mode (sorta like euro truck simulator for airplanes, or like air hauler 2 but inclused in the game and more accessible) would really be amazing imo (and it's where military sims like Falcon BMS have always been ahead). I think MSFS is great for me who is like a "gamer interested in simulation" rather than someone who wants to treat it as more of a hobby or training tool. Not needing a PC to run it is also a big plus, sometimes I legit just fly the Just Flight Arrow III out of my couch on an xbox series when I don't wanna be on my computer.
Yup, I think you nailed the different approaches for MSFS vs XP - Game vs simulator - and at that, I do think there should be a simpler mode you should be able to enable - flying is hard enough with all of this equipment, but on an xbox controller, its brutal. Luckily FS2024 will have more of those missions and I think that is definitely the way to go - hopefully they make it more accessible as well - trying to do helicopter rescues with fully realistic controllers will just frustrate anyone who is not an expert.
@@dixielandfarmmsfs has a lot of assists that can be enabled for gamepad play, like autotrim, stall protection and automatically do the tiny corrections on the yoke. It makes every plane control like an airbus with fly-by-wire, but for gamepad users that's pretty much necessary.
Parody done well is sometimes as good as what they are parodying..love the sound of Mighty Wind, will definitely check that out. Rutles was fabulous, Neil Innes was a great songwriter, infact songs like ' Get Up and Go' irked Macca to the point where he was on the verge of suing because it was so close to the original of 'Get Back'..which is kind of ironic when you realise Neil Innes (rightly) sued Oasis for ' Whatever ' as a blatant rip off of ' How Sweet to be an Idiot'. Good seeing you Kris.
I will content that there are some songs on that Rutles album that are better than some Beatles songs. I think Another Day is better than some McCartney songs. I always kept an eye out to see if Innes was on tour (in the US) but I don't think he ever did come over here. He was the best.
