Hi. I'm a 59 year old man. I was working in a maximum security prison and at age 35 my doctor put me on antidepressants. (Imagine that!!) The meds worked well, but by about age 40 I had put on some weight and it did not seem to me that I was overeating. By 50 I was at my current weight, 350 pounds. I'm about 6-3 so I could carry a lot of weight easier than shorter men, but it wasn't any fun. I retired 3 years ago, got off the meds, and the weight began to drop, but my head started killing me. Now I am a new med, feeling pretty good, and next month will be having gastric bypass in San Diego, California. I've only been able to develop the courage to do this by watching videos, like yours, and I want to thank you for "clearing a path," so to speak, for others like me. You are a beautiful human being on the inside and out. God Bless, and have a wonderful day tomorrow. Roy, from Southern California.

2 weeks ago today I had gastric bypass. Everything went great except for an allergic reaction I had on my abdomen. Not sure what I was allergic to, but I’m on the mend from that. I’ve lost 27 pounds since I started my journey in august. I was fortunate it only took 3 months from my first visit till surgery day. It’s scary how easy it’s been going. Thank you for sharing, you look amazing. Best of luck to everyone. We can do it.

@evepowell3360
@evepowell3360 2 года назад
@@RebirthRavenIX I am over 6 months out from surgery now. I am able to eat whatever I want. I have been fortunate that once I was cleared to eat solid food, I have tolerated almost everything. There are things that I choose not to eat, just because I know they are not a healthy choice to eat and it’s what caused me to be overweight. I personally feel that it’s not what you eat, it’s how much you eat. Certain things make me feel not great, so I avoid them. Never have I thrown up or had diarrhea because of something I ate. But again, I choose not to eat certain things. Chicken has always been ok to eat. I have not had McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s since before surgery. I want them, I miss them, but because of the grease and not not being a great choice, I haven’t even tried them. I’ve had chick fil a nuggets. I can only eat a few, just because the surgery limits how much I can eat. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for asking. I’ve lost a total of 82 pounds so far. I went from 224-142. I just don’t want to go back to where I was. So I personally choose not to introduce things that contributed to me being 224.

I go in for my initial consultation and also first visit with the dietitian tomorrow, and I've been watching as many videos as I've been able to. From what I've gathered from everyone, you included, is that this is going to be difficult in the beginning, but ultimately change my life. I'm starting around 263lbs, which is a lot at my small height, and I cannot even fathom that I might be able to be in the 130s-140s. But mentally I have been in this fight for so long and I am at my heaviest now because WFH life changed everything. I am going to speak with my doctor about the possiblity. 2008 RNY surgery at 280lbs. Lowest weight of 162 9 months after surgery. Became icy cold. All. The. Time. Now back up to 270lbs, eating 1/3 of what i did pre-surgery. Plus side is still rarely hungry as apposed to before surgery when i always felt hungry. Negative side is gained it almost all back, skin is saggy now even with the regain, nutiional deficiencies in all the B vitamins causing severe depression and exhaustion. I would not do a RNY again but maybe only a sleeve or just do fasting and low carb because thats how you have to eat anyway after surgery.

@@BariTaleCoaching hi!! I am feeling great! I am almost at 3 mos post-op from my RNY and I have to say I feel pretty lucky that I have have no real complaints about anything so far! I expected to wake up from surgery feeling pretty bad, and I was shocked, but I really didn’t! I always thought I had a high tolerance for pain, but I didn’t really KNOW since I really have not had any major surgery as an adult. But, I felt pretty good afterwards (the worst part for me was an IV infiltration that I had on my forearm. That was the worst most painful part and had nothing to do with the surgery (site) itself technically!) And now that I am free to eat, unrestricted, I find that I tolerate things way better than I expected to. So part of me almost wish that some things were more difficult 😬😉 but overall I feel really lucky to have not had any complications or just any adverse reactions or feelings postop. I will say I have been bad about logging my foods for the last two weeks, so I definitely need to get back on that track. Because accountability is something I need. But so far I’m down 45 pounds and I feel really good. I’m excited to see what the next nine months hold for me! I’m so glad I found your channel, because I love how honest you always are, and so real about everything, telling it like it is! Keep them coming! It’s been 3 years according to the dates on this video. How are you doing today? I found I have three years before I started having real problems. I’m still struggling. I was 376 (2011), down to around 225, or better, back up to 276 by fall 2019, went on Optifast shakes off and on for the next two years and gave up on them but got back down to 185 by June 2020 (Covid lockdowns), and back up to 286 by Dec 2023. I am presently practising carnivore with some very low carb veggies to break up the monotony. Since Dec 11 I have lost 40 pounds but this was not all carnivore. I started Mediterranean, found intermittent fasting, which I now practise no matter what I eat (18 hour fast, 6 hour eating), and my research led to Keto, Ketovore, and Carnivore. I know that this is not the “Be All, to End All”.

Thank you for this video! I am currently at a BMI of 37 and am around 5'3ish. I don't know if I will qualify for any surgery, because I don't have apnea or high BP, but I am really considering talking to my Dr about it. I've struggled with my weight since I was probably 6 years old, so almost 30 years. I'm so tired of being tired. This video inspires me to really consider this. Thank you again.

I didn’t think I would qualify either. I am at a lower BMI then a hard qualification. I qualified because of high cholesterol. I thought I had to have multiple qualifying issues, but thankfully I did not. Your doctor can clarify things for you. Best of luck.

@@butterflyygyrlsworld5106 I'm not being negative lol. i was told by my surgeon the majority of people after about a decade who get the sleeve end up having to have the bypass, because if they have issues it's not reversible. you can't reverse it if you get the bypass after a sleeve because there's not enough stomach to reverse. I get that they have to get the opinion themselves, but it's a no brainer to me. if there's more side effects from the sleeve compared to the bypass, get the bypass or mini- which are reversible anyway.

3 min in and I am crying. I just don't know how to start a conversation with my doctor. The last time I legit went to see her for a weight loss medication and she gave me ALLI, which is not very effective and is doing nothing to me but giving me more anxiety about food. I hate being fat, I hate linking exercise to weight loss and obsess over everything that I eat because no matter what I AM DOING TO GAIN WEIGHT.
@BariTaleCoaching
@BariTaleCoaching 3 года назад
UGH I've done Alli and it's TERRIBLE. It works, but there are some really gross side effects. I think you practice a script for yourself. "Thank you for all of your recommendations and help with my weight loss efforts, but nothing seems to be working. I'd like to explore weight loss surgery. Do you have anything local to recommend?" and book yourself a consultation. This is YOUR body and YOUR life. Your doctor doesn't get to determine this!

Talk to a bariatric doctor in your area (most have free consultations/seminars) and ask for some Primary care doctor recommendations. You’ll need a doctor who is supportive and willing to fill out your medical necessity form for surgery. Also many bariatric centers have support groups. Ditch your doctor ASAP if they won’t talk about topics that are important to you. I hate doctors who judge you and are unhelpful and close minded

Sounds like you are doing good, thanks for your story. Im a 67 year old man, and finding blogs on weight loss surgery is rare. I'm down to 10 lbs from the surgeon goal of down to 275 lbs. I've lost 50 lbs already intermittent fasting and weighing my food and fluids. I walk 3 miles every other day. Done this in 4 months. Family wants me to continue what im doing and no surgery. I was 205 lbs when i got married at 22 and never saw that weight since. Dieting over years never got below 275 my body would seem to stop loosing weight and that was it. There is 3 men in my group with around 8 women. I see the surgeon in jan, and should be approved for surgery. Last 2 appt. Is psy, eval, and upper gastric scope this week. This is somthing i fill i have to do for me. Being widowed for 14 years im ready to start a new life, not ready for a cain and driving around in gulf cart looking old and lazy. Went to planet fitness yesterday for first time ever. Went with my daughter and boy did that open my eyes to help myself. I have some dumb bells that i started to do exercise with. I understand the comment of a mother fearing her child will go through the same fate of a weight journey. I have been overweight my entire life. I remember being 8 years old and being at the campground we always went to. My family went a 4 of July weekend and my grandparents were there and my mom’s uncle/aunt and cousins and some of their friends. We always ran into each other, or planned, our camping trips for the same dates. I remember all the adults were cleaning up after dinner and us kids were getting things ready to make s’mores. The son of these friends, who is about 4-5 years older than me, told me not to make a s’more because if I jumped into the swimming pool the next day, the life guards were going to need to bring in a crane to lift me out and that all the other children at the camp ground were going to have to wait until they refilled the pool with water. At 8 I knew I was chubby, the biggest girl in my class or amongst my cousins but I wasn’t huge. That was the first time I remember being called fat, so fat that I was the butt of a joke. My 7 year old daughter now has 4 month check-ups to control her weight by her pediatrician. She eats pretty healthy but part is genetics. I don’t want her to feel what I did as a child. I too have done everything… weight watcher, those pills (allegro, is that what they were called), Herbalife, diets, bootcamps, nutritionist. My weight yo-yo’d up and down. The best was when I moved to Spain, to a little town with my aunt and uncle and I changed everything. Small town = no fast food, I didn’t have my car here so I had to walk everywhere or public transportation for long distance. I didn’t track pounds but I went down from an 18-20 pants to size 12. Eventually, I gained it again but it was a slow increase that took over 4 years. I then yo-yo’d again over multiple years. In 2019 survey seemed excessive and expensive so I did the gastric balloon. It was hard but great with psychologist, gym and trainer, nutritionist. In a year I lost 44 pounds, only half of what I wanted but a great start. I had the balloon removed February 2020. Then March happened and lock-down (which in Spain was much harsher than in the US) and not being able to go outside for anything for 4 months, the anxiety, working from 7 hours a day to 10 hours a day. Here I am 2 years later, back to feb 2019 weight and mentally blocked to go back to the techniques I was taught with the balloon. I don’t know why I can’t push past it but I think it is again the fear of failure that doesn’t let me move forward and try again.

@@BariTaleCoaching i just realized I commented with my kid’s account 😂 unfortunately I also feel the bmi is a complete sham, but now weight loss is imperative and impossible at the same time for me, I have so many things going on at the same time the stress makes me over eat but being in my 30s and over weight is getting to me 😩

I am preparing for this surgery after gaining so much weight in the 34yrs and hearing my parents tell me how fat I was fat since I was 3 years old to adulthood and having babies. I was never overweight until I started having my boys. I cannot look at myself in a mirror. I hate myself.

Shelly, I totally know how you feel. I think you've also been conditioned to not love yourself based on a really difficult situation growing up. I'm so so sorry. I hope you know how loved and valued you are by your family (and me!). Have you ever tried positive affirmations? I had to start doing mine in the mirror on my self love journey. Now, I believe them. You are beautiful. You are WORTH investing in yourself.

Oh man, within the first week! You see it pretty quickly. It tends to happen fast for the first 1-6 months!
