Heaven has a beautiful new angel. I am so glad that I got to see her in this in August of 2001 as well as "She Loves Me" in L.A. and later on "Nine", "Cinderella" and a few other shows. There are bells ringing in the hills of heaven now.
I mean- come on. This is EXQUISITE. This is as much an example by which others should be measured as the great Barbara Cook. Luker destroys this (the good kind!) and sends it up and out into musical theater history- right next to Barbara. I’m so moved. Gah! ❤️✨🚀
Rebecca Luker is astounding. She played the part of Christine in The Phantom of the Opera the very first time I ever saw it on Broadway. Sarah Brightman has nothing on her. You should hear her as the original Lucy in the Broadway production of The Secret Garden...unbelievable. She has one of the purest, most beautiful soprano voices in the world.
My school is doing this show! I got called back for Marian and was in the top two considered but didn't end up getting the part:( I love this song so much!
@rosielxxrik My point is that I first heard this beautiful song not from the movie, not from the original, not from professionals, but from a young, immensely gifted girl, untainted, like a diamond in the rough. She sang with passion, the whole audience was literally captivated by her song.
Haha, yes, yes it is self torture! Naw, I was working on a production of The Music Man and was watching different versions of it to get a feel for the show.
I really love this song. I havent been able to find anyone who really sings it right (of course except for Shirley Jones) but this woman is very talented, her voice is beautiful, and her interpretation is almost flawless. Thanks for posting
Rosie. Shirley Jones didn sing My white knight in the film. She sang Beeing in love which has some parts of My white knight.Barbara Cook sang i t first On Broadway and still is the best performer of this song although I like Rebecca Luker very much.Kristyn Chenowrth sang it in 2003 but both Cook and Luker were better.Try to listen the original 1957 cast of Thye Music Man.
Lyrics: Marian: My white knight, not a Lancelot, nor an angel with wings Just someone to love me, who is not ashamed of a few nice things. My white knight who knew what my heart would say if it only knew how. Please, dear Venus, show me now. All I want is a plain man All I want is a modest man A quiet man, a gentle man A straightforward and honest man To sit with me in a cottage somewhere in the state of Iowa. And I would like him to be more interested in me than he is in himself. And more interested in us than in me. And if occasionally he'd ponder what make Shakespeare and Beethoven great, Him I could love till I die. Him I could love till I die. My white knight, not a Lancelot, nor an angel with wings. Just someone to love me, who is not ashamed of a few nice things. My white knight, let me walk with him where others ride by Walk and love him till I die, till I die.
@rosielxxrik It was subtle at parts, dynamics of both sound and emotion implemented, not just a loud woman with a good voice and a better image belching this at the top of her lungs. this is the closest performance to that ive found. Sorry for writing so much. the song just means so much to me personally.
@malbertmacl @malbertmacl I've seen alot of people sing it. My high school did the play last year, and though she was an amateur, this wonderful girl with a magnificent voice, bursting with just raw talent for performing, sang it and personally I dont think anyone could have sung it better.
@rosielxxrik Despite her age, I know she'll one day get discovered. But anyway, its not about having a good voice, its about feeling the song and translating to the audience in a way that takes our breathe away, gives us perspective, if even only for a moment for some, into this young girl's heart.
What I LOVE about music man is at one moment it's GREAT "camp" the next moment is REALLY great "Roger's and Hammerstein"... the next moment... it's really GREAT "operetta" like "Gilbert and Sullivan" this is a GREAT cross between the BEST of R & H ... and G & S.... Magical tune!
@rosielxxrik My point is, you could have a fantastic voice, but just not be cut out for this song. Alot of the professionals who preform this have a talented voice, yet it just feels rushed, devoid of passion, like they're singing the lyrics yet arent listening to what theyre saying.
@mysweetsmile23 Yes barbara cook is also very talented. However I prefer this woman. Because it's not just about singing with a beautiful voice, it's interpretation and acting. Her performance is just more believable to me.
