The message of the movie was it’s hard to be human and it’s just hard to exist in life with societal expectations.
@billou97
@billou97 6 месяцев назад
Be for real, if that was the message, then there would not have shown all men being creepy, dumb in the real world, there would not have America's speech based of 1950's stereotype. There would not have the «ken will have as much power as women have in the real world» which is BS, bc women does have way more power then Ken ever had in the movie. There would not have the barbies manipulated the Kens into hating each other. Alan would not have been the butt of the joke of the entire movie without having someone recognize how shitty they treated him. They would not have mentioned patriarchy as much as they did.
@intense79nick
@intense79nick 6 месяцев назад
And the movie is self aware enough to understand that it's not going to have any meaningful solutions because life doesn't work that way. Some audiences hold that against the movie but I thought it was really well done balancing the gender specific societal push and pull along with Barbie's good and bad impact on it while sugar coating it with a comedic script, fantastic performances, and just insanely fun set design. If the movie helped you laugh and feel seen then it did what it was supposed to do.

I think Rhea Pearlman gets overlooked a lot in this movie when people discuss how great the acting was from the lead characters. Her role was small but she made us fall in love with Ruth from the first moment she was on the screen. Her moment with Barbie at the end was also so touching. She really makes you believe in the character - a grandma who is ambitious enough to create one of the world's best known toys, but also reserved enough to exude the kind of tenderness and love that draws you in like a warm hug. She deserves some props for her performance here.

You should check out Greta Gerwig's other movies. They aren't flashy comedies like Barbie, but the emotional depth they all have are amazing. Like most people, no one was really "excited" to see a live action Barbie movie, but seeing that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were attached to it made a lot of people do a second take and gave it a honest chance based on the caliber of directors/writers they are. Those two aren't known for make throwaway, soulless, cash grabs.

One thing I like about the movie that i think gets missed because it's so much more understated than the feminist messages is how it points out men's issues as well. Particularly how society puts so much emphasis on what job we have and what woman we're with, and how Ken was really a victim of that societal pressure. His lack of a sense of identity or worth (within himself and in the eyes of the world around him) is what drove him into his antagonistic role. So i dont think the movie is meant to genuinely be anti-men. I think making the men have no power in the end was just supposed to be this tongue-in-cheek ironic joke, and not the actual intended message of the movie.

I think Holden missed the point. In fact, that Barbie world is not feminism, but a faux vision as perverse as it is impossible in the real world, is part of the point. Feminism is when Barbie chooses to be someone who makes the meaning and not just be the idea. Feminism is the flip from how at the beginning of her journey she just wanted to take the high heel and go back to carefree oblivion. Feminism is her character growth from a "doll" person who is afraid of change or appearing imperfect to a real person strong enough to choose her own messy path (including pain, cellulite, death, and gynecologists!) and face the vagaries of life. Feminism is her message to Ken that you aren't your things, or your honors, or your partners (that last point, specifically, being that men should not define themselves by the girlfriends they "catch" or "conquer.") Feminism is about women having equal chances to choose about who they will be and how they will live as men do. When Barbie is chooses to be real and not an ideal; to live her own life and not marry the person society says she is supposed to and subsume herself into a binary unit with her boyfriend that is ultimate feminism, because she both exercises choice and specifically chooses to not define herself by what she "was made for" by a sexist society. Far from being muddied, the movie has attracted criticism and blow-back from right-winger for being so heavy handed and obvious about its criticism of patriarchy and its fierce feminism.

I mean maybe hundreds of years ago, but absolutely not today, lol. The Ken's had literally zero power or say at all. Women in the real world aren't even close to the Ken's. The real world today isn't even remotely as lopsided as it was in barbie land.
@billou97

I mean if they had really portrayed how 2023 is and not go with the exagerrated version of 1950 in 2023, it would have been less seen as Women vs. Men. Another thing that would have help is showing diversity in the way men were portrayed in the real world, or if it has shown women being bad, creepy, etc. which they did not.

@@bt3519the worst thing you could say about how the Kens are treated in Barbieland is that they are ignored. They're well taken care of, they live in comfort, they are not abused or taken advantage of. Yes, they hold no positions of authority, but the Barbies aren't governing them as if they have less rights. So yeah. It's much of a mirror than you think, since even in the inaccurate mirror image you can see how messed up our society treats women in comparison to how the Kens are treated.
@bt3519
@bt3519 6 месяцев назад
@blainelapierre4096 Yes, they are taken advantage of, wtf? lol. Did you watch a different movie? They treat the Ken's like shit. So much so that Ken was mind blown that someone in the real world asked him for the time. They asked Barbie where do the Ken's even live? And she literally said I have no idea, lol. That's a wild take to actually think that Barbie Land mirrors the real world. You could even argue that women do have it better right now in today's world. They could ruin a dudes life in 1 tweet lol.
@billou97
@billou97 6 месяцев назад
@@blainelapierre4096 That must be the worst take someone can have. 1) Ken's don't even have homes, job, purpose, role, anything. Even in 1950's women had value and purpose, not the same as now but they were still treated way better than the ken. If that would not be the case, women would have been the one that stays on the boat while it shink not men. Even in patriarchy women were valued, unlike for the kens.

It's a pretty good movie, really funny, though I think with all the misogynist reviews, people overlooked legitimate criticism. The ultimate solution could have said something deeper about equality or even positive girl power but went full "women are just gonna do to men what men did to women but this time its okay." There was no point to Will Ferrell's character. I kinda wish they'd spent a smidge more time in the real world because it felt rushed, like a skeleton of an idea. The daughter's sudden turnaround personality shift was also out of nowhere and totally unearned. They went and did Alan dirty, who disappears right before he can have a great development (though I guess that could be the point?). Some of it just felt like they were trying too hard. And it ends on a genitals joke. But overall I thought it was fun and had a good enough, if muddled, message that some people are getting from it. I just wish it was a bit stronger.
@PaintBottle

I loved the movie overall but I do agree that the message(s) in the movie gets a bit unfocused or surface level at times. Especially the whole Patriarchy vs Matriarchy analogy lacked a major focus and ultimate point. Although sometimes the openendedness kind of worked well. I really loved how they tackled the topic of being/accepting yourself with all your flaws and quirks through the IP of Barbie. Especially at the end Ken pouring his hearth out about "Barbie and Ken/just Ken" showed pretty well how one sided ideals of perfection kind of keeps you living your life. How you don't need a partner or this one dream of yours to be something unique and meaningful. In similar fashion I liked the whole topic of "damaging beauty/lifestyle standard" surrounding Barbie and how Robbies traditional barbie gets the dirt for it in the movie just as basic barbie has gotten it in real life conversations but in truth it's just one truth among many. Barbie is afterall an IP that teaches kids options through fun in feminine light. Even before all the more modern diverse and body positive Barbies there were different career and hobby options for barbie so we can't really say Barbie is something specific or that Barbie tried to put girls into single mold. Outside the topics I think the movie was just fun and sets were awesome. They really captured the dollhouse and childs play aesthetic. Song number/beach battle of Kens was the highlight for me. Mattel subplot was underutilized but at least it gave room for Ruth scenes that were powerful. About 7/10 for me. Lack of focus in some areas pulls the movie down a bit too much to give it higher grade. I bet a Barbie fan will get more out of this. As a guy that had little to do with Barbies growing up I hold very little personal attachment or nostalgia for this one. I only recall some of the sets/outfits from toy store shelves.

I certainly didn't hate this movie, but I'm a little unsure about how much I actually liked it. I like all of the actors, who I think did a fantastic job (particularly Ryan Gosling's comedic timing and singing voice). I think the design team did a fantastic job. I think there are several really good comedic moments, which made me laugh out loud. Overall, I think that like Jen, the movie simply wasn't for me. I wanted to like it, but it ended up being one of those movies that I would recommend that people watch if they don't have anything better to do, but not worth spending any money on seeing it.

Let me explain: I get the impression that reaction channels seem to want to appease the fans of the movies they watch, but that often makes the experience feel fake. The people saying this movie isn't for kids confuse me. What about this movie is not okay for kids? The jokes for adults that are in every kids movie that they never understand until they're much older? Or the fact it's a feminist movie (and a really good one, at that) that also highlights how cultural stereotypes negatively affect men as well? If I had kids, I would 100% show this to them. Maybe at like, 10, but... This movie is nowhere near as "bad" as a lot of movies I watched at even younger ages than that. I watched The Evil Dead at age 6 (without permission), and that has a full on tree grape scene. Sure, I didn't understand what happened in that scene until I turned 19, but that doesn't change when I saw the movie. Edit: Also, the politics in this film are very simple and, while not 100% correct, are easier for kids to wrap their heads around and to also give them a starting point to learn from. People might say that we shouldn't expose kids to politics, but I disagree. Let them be kids, yeah, but also teach them about politics because EVERYTHING in this world is political. Our lives revolve around and are dictated by politics. It's important for them to know about, because eventually the world will be left in their hands and not ours, and they need to be prepared for that. Edit 2: I give this film a solid 7/10. As for the politics, specifically at the end when they deny the Kens a Supreme Court Justice seating, it's not perfect. But it's not supposed to be. Real life isn't perfect, and Barbie Land is just the opposite, but still not perfect, version of that. And the film is also not saying Matriarchy is better than Patriarchy pr that women are better leaders than men. It's saying that change is required, and that ae all have to move forward together to make the changes necessary to create a better life for everyone. The movie isn't about men versus women, it's about the disadvantaged being tired of stampeded upon and the advantaged being taught the error of their ways but still needing to grow more as people. Barbie Land was a hell hole. But now, the Kens have a role in the government. It's not enough right now, but in time, they'll have equality with the Barbies. It'll be a messy, unpleasant road, but it's a road worth traveling. And THAT is the message. Barbie literally broke down saying she never wanted things to change but she eventually realized that things needed to change. She saw that the world was not perfect and worked to make it better. And not only did she pave the way for Barbie Land becoming a true utopia, but she also made the biggest change for herself as well when she became human. And that, too, is a change with a messy, unpleasant road.
@billou97

I would say the message of blaming men for everything women go through. Blaming Barbie (a doll made by a women) for women self estime issues, when in reality it's women that are responsible for their own self estime issue. Most of America's speech are things Women push on other women or themselves based on their assumption of what men wants. Who is bodyshaming women most of the times? Other Women. Some men do, don't get me wrong, but 99% of them or either religious, conservatives or both. It's the same for slut shaming. The whole men get praise if they sleep around, but women don't is a bad argument, bc who praise men for it? Other men, women won't praise a men who sleep around they would call him a player, douchebag, fuckboy, etc. Who would praise women for sleeping around? No one. So the real argument would be why does women not praise each other, like men does?

While the story was "man vs. woman", I think it was done more so in jest: the themes actually point to the flaws in both the male & female characters, showing that neither is better than the other. Barbie doesn't value Ken. Then Ken gets carried away with power & is petty enough that he uses it to get revenge on Barbie. Then the Barbies manipulate the Kens into fighting each other. Then Ken struggles with not forcing his affections onto Barbie. As things progress, however, the conflicts resolve by each side coming to respect & understand the unique, personal, & independent worth of both themselves and the other. In the end, the man vs. woman conflict is just staging for the comedy that frames the commentary.

The men in Barbieland represent 1950s housewives. When Barbie loses her privilege and has the sulking fit it’s how a lot of men are reacting to the concept of sharing power after having complete control. The final message is about empowering people to deal with complex society rather than us or them. There is a lot to like in complex messages based on the image of 1950s idealism that Barbie represents. But if you only see Barbie as a toy I guess it doesn’t make much sense as a simple movie. Sorry that you missed out on the fun.
