That's perfectly valid, I think it's a person to person thing. That said there are good dubs and bad dubs and this definitely was a bad one. There's always going to be issues when dealing with a language barrier. Subs can have crappy translations as well sometimes. Plenty of cultural things also don't translate well no matter what you do. This was my first time watching a dub of a live action show as opposed to animation. I just could not get over people's mouths moving completely out of sync with how they were talking. Took me out of the experience fully. Plus the acting on the voices wasn't great.

Who the heck wants to sit there and read and rewind for many episodes for all the little details you missed for trying to watch a sub. I’ve watched several movies & anime to compare dubbed vs sub and people definitely are overrating the subs. Not saying which is better but don’t think dub deserves nowhere near the hate people give it. They go on long rants trying to explain why the sub “is so much better” like I or anyone else is incapable of comparing the 2 for themselves to see which version one prefers. We get it guys, you watch subs bc you want to pretend you’re getting a much more better genuine experience… also no one one care where you keep crying about it every other comment. Imagine if they watched the sub and people came in crying they should have watched the dub. I never really understood why people hate dubbed versions of shows, but I totally get it now. Emotions and everything are different. Ultimately changes the characters in a weird way. No complaints about the video! Just an observation.
@@k3n12ock "Never" is a very strong word. There are cases when the dub is better, though it's extremely rare. For example, I'll say that the eng dub of Black Lagoon is better than the original jap one. But yeah, in 99% of cases, watch the original.

I've never heard Squid Game dubbed before and I'm glad I haven't because this shit is so ass!!! As far as the format goes, reactions in the bedroom feel better because you're more comfortable. So I hope they continue.

I'm watching the video now and I hated the dubbed version initially but honestly, it's not as bad as I remember. Some of it is a little over the top but on the whole it's not too egregious.

This series won over 17 awards including Emmies, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Critics Guild, and People's Choice. It's funny cause Lee Jung-jae the lead is one of South Korea's most successful actors. He was at an American awards show and on the red carpet an American report asked how felt about this role making a super star. He smiled and humbly said that it was amazing that the Korean film industry was getting the recognition it deserves.

@@KiraMahMan no not really. In particular in anime. All I hear is the actor and/or voice actor yelling for apparently no good reason. Godzilla minus one was great. Maybe the best Godzilla movie. Would have been better dubbed. I don't like reading movies and TV shows. I struggle with reading and watching at the same time. So if my eyes are focused at the bottom of the screen I'm not seeing everything that's happening. Which is only made worse because I don't read fast. So I often have to pause and or rewind to get all the dialogue. It's just not an enjoyable experience. I must admit the SQUID GAME voice acting is sub par. which I don't understand. There are fantastic voice actors out there. Arcane, Invincible, The Legend of Vox Machina, the list goes on and on. Incredibly talented people who can do great VO work but it felt like they hired noobs off the street.

Dub= 4 the win. So glad they watched what they enjoy more and didn’t try to fake like the sub is “so much better” like the majority of you guys pretend.

@@rashadd2615 maybe, but… I’ve seen both. There’s a reason so many are upset at this dub. Because they are comparing the performances. This one is fine, sure… good, a little cheezy, hits during the shocking moments well enough, but when compared to the original performance… it just feels off.
Hi Holden, If you and Jen would be willing, I would encourage watching foreign shows in their original language with Eng subtitles. There was some controversy with Squid Game's in particular for several mistranslations that hurt the storytelling. Korean and English are very different languages and a lot of nuance can be lost in localization. I am Korean-American and don't mind too much since people have their preferences and some actually need the dub to watch the series. But I really think watching Squid Game in its original Korean language gives the best viewing experience and authentic performances!
@@AllThingsKen It's why I put the disclaimer. Holden and Jen are free to watch how they want - I'm not denying that. But I did want to at least mention it for Squid Game in particular, just in case they watch more foreign shows in the future and would be open to a different experience.
There was also controversy over mistranslations in the subtitles too though so just watching subs isn't a guarantee that you're going t avoid the issue of lost nuance or misunderstanding.
Train 2 Busan and Parasite is a must watch. It'd recommend watching the movies in original language, Korean, and have the subtitles on. Trust, you can't go wrong.
I think it’s more enjoyable in my opinion because the Korean speaking version displays more emotion and just seems more normal. Plus reading the words isn’t that bad.

I liked this format, the differences are minimal enough. If it allows you to get out more series alongside your movies im down. Hoping for The Boys Season 4 in a couple weeks. And maybe Korra someday. The next couple months have some of the best streaming shows new seasons in them. Boys, House of the Dragon and Cobra Kai
@@needum9212 because it’s way worse than the original version? The translation of the meanings and what they’re saying is awful. Koreans have said so, and the voice acting the actual actors did really bring out the emotions and the impact. The dubbed voices is bland and emotionless in comparison and you can’t tell the full impact of the acting with it
@@vorceful9590 once you get used to it, you forget that you're reading. It becomes as natural as listening to it in the original language. Trust me, I used to think as you do but I'm glad I persevered and practiced watching subbed content.
They grew up with one language, self centered and oblivious of other parts of the world and their cultures. While the rest of the world (non english speaking countries) plays foreign movies in theaters, and people are exposed to foreign cultures all the time, not to mentioned, that most people in the world are at least bilingual.
These casual reactions are a pretty great way to handle longer-form stuff like seasons of a tv show, the video covers the whole season and there's no way for commentors to spoil anything :D
I really like the format here, it’s more raw, and candid. The issue I have with dubbed iterations is that they do not capture the acting power of the actors. You can’t hear the emotion behind the voice of the person meant to play the role, thus depriving them of a pretty good percentage of their performance. It also doesn’t capture the little things of the story that make it that much more relatable. I’ve been here since the beginning of the channel, and I really enjoy watching you guys. That being said; in the future, if you watch media in a foreign language, please watched the subtitled version, it really advances the experience. I love what you guys do, keep up the good work!
I'm actually digging this format a lot! I was surprised when I saw you did it all at once. This show is fantastic! I watched it for the first time last year and it blew me away. I'm glad yall enjoyed it so much. I'm also surprised that Holden actually correctly predicted the old man being the one in charge from the beginning!
I can't get over how bad the dubbing is for this show. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't already seen it in Korean, but the dubbing takes me completely out of it. Edit: Just wanted to add, you all had a great reaction though!
Glad you guys watched this and good reaction, but damn... The dubbed took this show from like 9,5/10 to a 3/10. This is one of those where you basically NEED to watch subbed to really appreciate the show fully.
@@jager3090 There are a bunch of articles explaining it, but to summarize: - Mistranslations made for a weaker script. Localization is a tough job and some changes are inevitable, but people fluent in Korean and English have compared the two and expressed that not only are many phrases translated incorrectly that can cause a disconnect with the intended message of scenes, the writing is overall weaker and dumbed down, hurting the storytelling and the series' message. - Dubbing in another language is hard so I don't want to be too harsh, but the performances really don't compare to the original Korean from very talented actors. And since it was acted live originally in Korean, it sounds a lot more natural because it's the actors speaking it and coordinating it with their physical acting. - While the themes of classism and all that can be broadly applied to many countries, Squid Game is very much made with Korean culture in mind I would encourage watching with English rather than English [CC] subtitles, since they give a more direct and accurate translation of what they say in Korean.
If people are ok with subtitles, watch sub. If people don't like subtitles, dub is fine. It just sounds goofy once you've watched the original, but it doesn't affect the quality of viewing if you're open-minded and get adjusted to it. If you don't understand Korean, all you're doing is reading words and then adding emotion based on how they sound anyway, which is not THAT different of an intake process. People are overreacting.
One of the most interesting aspects of this whole show was the ending. When they were betting on the guy in the snow, the winner loses no matter what. You can realize that in the end, he did exactly what all VIPs do, bet on people and watch, instead of going yourself and help.
We didn't realize how big of a deal it was to people when we were watching until the Patreon comments started coming in. The bright side is that we'll get a ton of comments saying the same thing which will drive up the video interaction. 🤷♂️

Episode 6 would almost be like the Hawkeye and Black Widow scenario from Avengers: Endgame. If me and my Twin were in it, we would determine who has a better chance at winning the rest of the games to have a better chance at winning for the whole family.
I genenerally dont mind english dub for foreign shows but for k dramas, it feels weird when i dont hear it in korean. I remember cringing so hard when i accidentally started watching one of the episodes in english because it defaulted out of Korean to English for some reason. Haha. If you do plan to continue reacting to kdramas and whatnot, i do recommend seeing them in korean. Because 99% of the time, the dubs are horrendous. Not just for Squid Game but for the vast majority of other k dramas. Trust me, ive tried. Its very different from watching anime dubbed because there are some good english dubs of anime like FMA: Brotherhood or Cowboy Bebop, to name a few. You miss a lot of the nuance as well as mistranslations or direct translations that dont make too much sense in english. But im sure you know that. I just hope, in the future, you decide to go with the original language instead.
@@Edwin.X There are English [CC] (Closed Captioning) and English in the subtitles options. The English [CC] subtitles are specifically for the English dub, while the English subtitles are a closer, more direct translation of what the actors are actually saying in Korean.

It was so accurate that it seemed like it was done by someone familiar with the original language and culture and chose to stay faithful to the writer's vision. The close-caption subtitles and the dubbed audio script, on the other hand, were rife with mistranslations and strange localizations that reduced the emotional impact of several scenes.
Really not being a snob but as soon as I realised you're watching it dubbed I just couldn't bear it. So much of acting is in the voices, their tone and emotion matched with their acting... itt takes away SO much when it's dubbed. You're talking about some of the best actors in Korea being replaced by hired voices. It really truly takes so much away from it. I can understand with anime, but when it's real people acting... dubbed just takes so much away. Try watching this subbed, from wherever you continue it and you will totally understand. Imagine dubbing over the voices of robert de niro or leonardo dicaprio or any other high calibre actor.
it was never intended to be more than the one season, they're just forcing it because of how successful it was. because of that i don't think it can possibly compare to the first season. the only storyline i can see is that the cop from season 1 survived being shot and falling in the water, and he and gi-hun team up and try to bring down the VIPs.
Casually watch would be a good series! The dub for this was really bad especially for the emotional scenes. The scene with Ali, the girl and the old man dying made me a sobbing mess. That being said if you do prefer dub, I'd recommend shows actually done well like Cyberpunk edgerunners or even well dubbed anime
I was afraid this would happen one day. For any foreign movies or shows I would say watch it in the original language to hear their range of tone. Godzilla Minus one is great in the Japanese language. For anime I don’t mind if it’s sub or dub since there are really good dubs

Yeah my Uncle only knows Spanish so him & my aunt watched it in that language too. Some people aren’t able to read subtitles in their native language while listening to a different one they don’t know
I was just talking about Squid Games with some friends the other day. I think I could be morally grey in certain situations. But if I won the Squid Games, I’m pretty sure I’d be ruined for life with permanent PTSD. Not just surviving, but realizing 455 people died. What a great show😊
I will never understand the people who care about this so much either you watching them act or reading the captions. At least with dub you can focus 100% on what’s happening. In before you say I read slow or you can do both neither is true. If looking at captions your missing other things

When the language has been dubbed, you miss a lot of language-specific aspects of the setting, which is often an important part of the setting. This is especially the case with Korean, which has a very characteristic sound to it. It's a pretty important aspect of Squid Game. The story takes place in Korea. Not California. The dubbing in Squid Game is also extremely poorly done and some strange translations choices made. E.g. the "red light green light" scene which hits entirely different when you watch the original language. I wish Holden and Jen had uploaded their reaction one episode at a time, so they had caught that they're watching the wrong version.

Really like this format, especially for long form content, I think when you do episode by episode I tend to tune in for episodes I want to watch, but here it’s nice to watch it in a hyper cut
The worst part about episode 6 (Marble one), is that they teamed up with people they liked. Imagine if you two were in there, you'd probably have teamed up together thinking you were taking on other people. Then it would come down to one of you going on and the other having to die. How horrible. Great show though.

The first time i watched it, i watched it dubbed too but went back and rewatched subbed and it truly is a different and much better feeling all together
There are so many good Korean shows out currently on Netflix…. Under the Queen’s umbrella., Mr. Queen, crash land on you, the kings affection, hotel, Del Luna, Extraordinary attorney Woo… just to name a few.

I think splitting seasons in halves would be the best way to do this imo. 1 episode reactions just take to long, and i think having 2 videos on a season would be better for the channel no? More uploads etc.
People complain about everything. Who cares if it's dubbed or not? The RU-vid community is so whiny. Granted, sometimes the dubs are pretty awful but I don't want to have to read the dialogue and miss what is happening on screen.

Of course, probably they didn’t know, but you can always ask if the dubbing is good, and people will tell you. Dubbing is always an alternative If is professionally done, I really don’t know what happened in this case. Not much time to prepared a good voice over crew?
Exactly it's mostly people jumping on the bandwagon of what others say, no mind of their own. People reading the subtitles miss most of what's happening on screen while they're busy reading. It's impossible to see what's happening while you're reading. It's like reading a book while watching a TV show or movie.
oh man, Gganbu wrecked EVERYONE when the show came out. That music is haunting. Did you notice that in the 2nd episode, when the game is cancelled, it showed many of the players in the same situation that they end up dying in?
They really fo need to watch Gen V before the Boys s4 because they got Gen V characters coming onto the boys, and I don't want Holden and Jen to be seeing them without any background.
Format's great, and despite what many would have you believe, so is the dub. As far as dubs go, Squid Game's English dub is pretty accurate and faithful to the original.
One minor fact: One of the characters in the play is set to be a pickpocket, but pickpockets have disappeared from Korean society since the mid-90s. In Korea, the arrest rate is over 90%, so if you commit a minor crime, you are caught within a week. Even foreign people who stay for a few days are caught if they commit a crime.

Very disappointed this was the dubbed version. Voice overs don't carry the same emotions as the actor portraying the characters. Also, not all the show was in Korean, the VIP's spoke English which is lost in the dubbed version*. When they start talking in English, it feels more sinister that these games are organised by Western super-rich for their amusement. *Likewise for Kung Fu Hustle, when one character (in English) references The Untouchables
Sorry to sound repetitive, as this has been mentioned MANY times already, but watching this with dubbed audio REALLY does Squid Game a disservice. Truly missing the emotional weight behind hearing these actors speak Korean, all the nuance to their performances are also lost. Great video though, guys. Roll on season 2.
Dub kinda killed it for me to be honest. Just makes the show seem really poor quality especially with how bad they are. I get the argument for anime as there's so many equally talented Japanese and english VAs all trying to go for a similar tone/style i've never really understood the negativity. But i think a bunch of the actors from this rightly won awards for their performances which lost a lot of the impact without the voices. Has the same energy as watching game of thrones and having all the dialogue redone by the cast of dragon ball or something, weirdly funny in an unintentional way. Also think its completely bizarre how many people here are dying on the hill that they cant read subtitles and watch a film at the same time like its a flex & not a self report. I get all the weebs are massively toxic about it so people get triggered whenever the topic is brought up but I've honestly never watched a live action with a dub that wasn't almost unwatchably bad. Makes me think with shows like squid game or films like parasite people must be watching them and wondering what all the fuss was about.
I’d like to see you guys do long form stuff in this format going forward! No chance for spoilers and we don’t have to wait for you to get to *that* episode!
Dubbing really depends on the country. I live in germany and we have the best voice actors when it comes to dubbing on the entire fuggin planet honestly! So it reeeaaally works! But yeah, the us are not particially known for dubbing, so well meh. Also why do amaricans never use duvet covers haha? Seems so odd to me

The english dub was atrociusly bad... Like some of the characters weren't any feelings in their voice. :( And that white dot at Holdens face... the one pixel... :D Btw i really liked this one season in one vid format!
Can I just say, I really liked this. Jen seems really into it and I like sarcastic Holden. I haven't watched you guys for a very long time. I always found your old set up rather cold and uninterested. Like you're too far from each other and from us. I much prefered the more chillaxed vibe
Imagine non-english reactors watching a show in English and all the non-english audience complain that they need to listen to the original English audio not the dub, when nobody understands a word of English anyway. Overreaction. Watch sub if you're ok with sub, otherwise dub is fine.
I loved this, I’m always itching for the next episode which is good to but banging it all out in one like a movie is great, there’s so much content out there it’s tough to take it one episode at a time even tho videos is $$. Loved it
