Experienced divorce lawyer here (Pennsylvania and New Jersey). Until the marriage and divorce laws change in the USA, I would advise any young, ambitious man to work hard in all areas of your life, while staying unmarried. Once you get married, you will be subject to the courts and the laws of your jurisdiction if the marriage becomes non-functioning (even if you have done nothing wrong). Stay safe out there!

Here's a different thought, once a woman gets what she wants in a marriage, she does not see the need to be engaged anymore. If she wants kids, house, or a car, and gets that, she disengages. Men stay because they took those wedding vows seriously.

I met a Japanese man a number of years ago. He was in his 70s, a martial arts instructor, he came to N. America to do some teaching seminars. He was a retired police detective. He told all of us how he lives alone with his cats. He worked hard for all of his career to provide for his family. In the meantime, his wife took care of the kids and household, but once the kids were older, they didn't need much care, and after the kids had moved out on their own, of course, they required no care at all. While the kids were at school and the husband at work, the wife would spend time with her friends, doing hobbies, etc. When he finally retired from work, and looked forward to spending time with his wife and family, she divorced him. She waited until he retired so she could get half of his pension. He said that this happened to many of his co-workers, too. The wives all had it planned out. Now the ex-wives spend time with their friends, travelling, etc. and the men are left alone with no friends, because they never had time for friends, as all they did was work. Often worked long hours, sometimes sleeping at the police station if they were on a particularly difficult case to work through the night. And now he's all alone and lonely. Now the new generation of Japanese guys has seen what has happened to their fathers and grandfathers and are opting out of having a wife or even a girlfriend. Why bother? Besides, there are plenty of women who will 'hook up' with them plus there's the option of merely paying for sex if they want it.

Single woman here....learning this now so that I don't ruin my future marriage

I am convinced my wife loves me for what I do but hates me for who I am. She enjoys time when I am a chauffeur, a cook, and masseuse but if I want intimacy, she turns cold as a rock. The other thing is when the wife demands the man to change but she sees no reason to change. I made changes to help our relationship and waited five years. She didn't. Walls go up. I am also convinced that culture has told women to demean men to gain control. Society won't admit this, the Church ignore this, I believe 97.5% of women don't care about men's needs.

There's an old story that I heard about an older couple driving in their truck down the highway. The wife looks out the window and sees a young couple in a truck snuggled up next to each other romantically as he drives. She looks at her husband from the passenger seat and says "Why don't we cuddle like that anymore while we drive. Its so romantic." And she turns to him waiting for his explanation of why he's not as romantic. His response is "Well, I haven't moved." Women often, unfortunately, change and then wonder why things are different. While their good man is still just as willing and eager to take care of them. But they get "wife mode" or bored or the infatuation wears off, and they see that as someone else's fault.

I have never been married and I already gave up on women altogether. They are too complicated, only care about themselves and what they want.

At 73 in a 50 year marriage which 30 years being sexless, I have reached the point I just don’t care or want to fix this situation. Just gave up a long time ago. I have found my own inner peace just being left alone. By not working on things early on this is what happens.

One small detail. In your concept of the switch, you stated that a woman controlled it. That you can set it for different types of men. That you set it to desire good guys for marriage. But... After marriage it miraculously unswitches to off . But it could switch on for another emotional connection with another man. But the woman controls the switch. Let's be honest. Two disclaimers: I don't live in a common-law state. I am not actually married to the woman i've been with for 15 years. Sex had dropped off and she got increasingly crabby a few years ago. During one altercation, she told me fine, we're roommates and she's not going to sleep with me anymore. I said, "Like hell. If that's the case you can pack a suitcase and go live with your sister because if I want a roommate i'll find somebody else." She's been good ever since. The lesson I learned, was to never let her think she won't be cast aside if she gets out of hand. Keep her in that state and she'll keep trying. Fail at that and you're tossing your marriage in the toilet. And this is why our marriage laws are destructive to marriage because it makes that incredibly difficult.

Yeah, well here is my take. This whole deal happened to me also...in 2 marriages. When the problem was addressed, and she (both times) agreed what the problem was, I was only rewarded with sex that was akin to having it with a corpse. Got out of both. The only thing worse than no sex, is resentful and boring, duty sex. Horrible and disrepectful! I hear this from tons of guys, of all ages.

Many men "want a solution" to a sexless marriage primarily because they understand that the alternative, i.e., leaving their wives, likely comes with a gigantic price tag, including loss of much of the wealth they've built, and a good relationship with their children. I'd ask men to reconsider placing themselves in this situation where a woman can make his life miserable while the woman knows full well that the state/government will severely punish the man if he can't take the abuse and leaves.

Great insight. You really speak to the situation I endured in my own marraige. I wish I had this information then. I really loved my wife and wanted nothing but her happiness. I put all the relationship failings on my shoulders only to realize years later I was the only one working to make it work.

As a man in a sexless, affection-less marriage (almost 25 years), you have the most revelatory take on this situation I've ever seen. Sadly, its probably too late for me in this marriage, as I think our relationship is well beyond saving. But you've opened my eyes to what is one of my wife's obvious problems. But I could never help her, and by the time I realised that she had massive issues, it was already too late, and we were in a wrecked relationship, and just stayed together for the sake of the kids.

As a man in his 60s I can say that being a "good" guy is the height of stupidity. Women only see you as an ATM and once they lock you down they give the bare minimum to keep you hopeful. Live life on your own terms, be selfish about your interests and NEVER put a women at the centre of your life, she will always drag you down to misery and self contempt. Women rarely do introspection.

Karyn, You and your husband have my greatest respect for being willing and able to work through your problems. The emasculation process is very real. I won’t bore you with my/our whole story, but after 20 years of trying absolutely everything I could come up with to try to identify and address our issues, I came to a turning point. I realized that for me to be able to retain any type of self respect, I simply had to make the choice that I would rather live without sex, and without affection, and without resolving our relationship issues, for the rest of my life, than to feel like I had to beg for something my wife was no longer willing to give. After making that decision, and letting her know, a major change took place. That apparently was exactly what she wanted, for me to no longer want anything from her, not love, not sex, not communications. Literally, all of a sudden, all of her constant anger, constant argumentativeness, all her hyper-criticalness, all her excessive “control issues”, just all stopped. She remained all closed off emotionally, and communicatively, but at least she wasn’t dumping on me all the time without trying to help me understand what was going on with her or what she needed. I simply had to adjust to the reality of the loss of our “marriage”, that apparently had occurred 20 years prior. It took me 3 years of grieving that loss before I started healing emotionally/ On the positive side, I got my self respect back, and no longer felt like a victim of her game playing. And, I think I’ve gotten over my bitterness for her not being honest with me 20 years earlier, when we were both young enough to make a new start. It would have been so much better if she had just told me outright that she no longer wanted to be my wife, emotionally or physically. To this day, I don’t know what my responsibility was for the deterioration of our relationship. I know I was terribly stressed, and going through the toughest challenges of my life in others areas of my life. And, I know my injury ended our life dreams that we had put everything into for 20 years. And I still don’t know if she was fully conscious of what she was doing to me and our relationship. With no communications, there can be no joint problem solving. So congratulations to you and your husband, Karyn. You two did what my wife and I couldn’t do.

So what does that say when she "turns on the switch" for someone else and lies about it? Is it because she's afraid of losing you, being embarassed, or afraid of losing stability and being taken care of? Or all 3? Men only need 3 things to be happy: respect, honesty, and sex! Everything else is just a bonus in life.

In modern society men are portrait to be responsible not only for their own actions but also for their relationship partners actions. So if something goes wrong - men are naturally to blame for it. When women withdraw their affection men start to work harder, in order to please them, hoping to get things back on the right track. That move empowers women even more. Men get less and less respect. The disconnect between the two partners deepens. Attempts to discuss these issues with women don't work, because they are not clearly aware of their behaviors. Woman's soul is a very deep place. By diving into it we get lost without guidance.

As a single man with no kids some days are rough but at least I’m not trapped

This video hit the nail on the head for me. The passion and desire for each other was hot and heavy before we got married. After marriage it was like she turned her passion switch off. When I tried to discuss it with her, she had a myriad of excuses and things I needed to do to make her feel loved. I did all these things and more trying to woo my wife back to no avail. No matter what I did, nothing ever changed. She got angry when I started keeping track of when we had sex and when i told her it was every two months, she at first denied it, then got angry that I was keeping track. Whenever I would do something innocuous she didn’t like, she would spontaneously blurt out some comment about “and this is why we don’t make love more often”, when whatever the disagreement was had nothing to do with sex. If I were to ask her to honestly tell me the last time she actually physically desired me, I would venture a guess that she probably couldn’t remember. If I were asked that question, I could measure it in hours, not days, weeks, months, or years.

The problem is real simple, she married a man she was not really physically attracted to. It doesn't matter , she basically settled. That doesn't mean she could not have good sex but she controls the marriage in the bedroom. When the sex starts to dwindle the man thinks he did something wrong so he tries harder. Which starts to turn her off aggravate her, and start seeing him as needy or weak. Remember the statistics 30 to 40% of all paternity suits the man is not the father. To say that he's even a sperm donor would be a lie. Remember how hard it is for a female conceived that means get pregnant. And how easily it is to prevent it. With all the contraceptives we have today. But still 30 to 40% of all paternity test the man is not the father. I've been with more than a hundred females in my life and that's not a good thing. 3/4 had a husband or boyfriend or both. I was shocked when I found out ,and I asked them why they did this, they all said the same thing. I love him but I don't love him that way. And remember paternity test were done for the guys that suspected. That means there cheating and the Men is raising someone else's kid without knowing it. Is a lot higher. as everyone jokes about it. Men are clueless. And are the last to know in a relationship what's going on. It's not the woman can't be satisfied buy her man. She doesn't want to be satisfied, she wants to play the field. Make the paternity test mandatory. And make the female responsible if she's cheated and having someone else's baby. When men and women get married the (good) man tends to take the attitude that they have made an agreement and that he will honor it. He signals that he is committed to her. One solution for this is for the man to let if be known that he has a limit. That leaving is on the table if needed. You can't negotiate for desire or pasion. For many many women, familiarity breeds contempt. She digs mystery, discovery, and uncertainty, and once that is over she becomes bored and contemptuous. Turn the tables on these women by understanding that her 1-3 year pre-marriage entrapment period, is really the full life of the relationship. Enjoy that period and then move on before marriage.

We knew all this. It's so sad love has nothing to do with marriage to a woman. As you said, men fall for this story. If you stay just going steady, the woman will be much better with you. Do Not GET MARRIED and ruin what both of you have.

See the thing is men know it is going to cost to put a woman away and that is why men don’t initiate divorce/file for custody like women do. If men could dump women without having to pay they most certainly would.

Once my wife started withholding sex, instead of divorcing, i just started getting it on the side. I would have lost my business, my home and custody of my children and i was not going to let that happen. My wife is a friend and she gave me 2 children, men now. We enjoy being together and do things together, except sex. But, i get more than enough of that from my long term honey on the side, who is also a friend and has accepted how things are...for 20 years now.

Getting divorced now after 48 year marriage. Your website (that I discovered after I initiated my divorce) has been a revelation for me. I feel so STUPID for allowing my wife to convince me that I was the sole source of our relationship dysfunction. It was always ALL ME. I tried for at least 35 years to “fix” myself to meet her requirements. I am what Karen calls “a good man”. I never cheated on her despite years of imposed celibacy.

Never assume that women’s complicated stories about what she wants you to do have any basis in reality. You’re absolutely correct. If these stories/issues only come up 2 years after marriage, it isnt you. SHE doesn’t want to, so she invents a reason why its your fault. This relieves her of all responsibility.

If your WIFE, who has committed to be with you for better or worse, withholds sex from you, sit her down, have a calm, quiet conversation w her and just say, “look, ILY and I want JUST you, BUT, sex is a necessity for me and if you don’t want to to then I’m forced to look elsewhere”. I agree that women need to take accountability. I would say that a big part of women losing interest in men is because men over pursue and reward them with attention/validation, not paying attention to HER effort. If she likes you more than you like her, you’ll be doing good.

This switch is one of the most cruel, evil things I’ve ever heard-so manipulative and cruel to a man. If women are even capable of this, men should not marry. I don’t know any man in my life capable of this kind of manipulation and selfishness-though men certainly have our problems. This kind of betrayal is so selfish and cruel and manipulative, men are at desperate risk of having their lives taken from them-half their life earnings and children. Deleted my previous comment. My wife passed away July 16, 2023. SHe quit sex 13 years ago. We were together 30 years. Even though she did these things, I miss her so much and wish she was here or that I was with her in Heaven. I never stopped loving her and I still love her with all my heart. I never realized that losing your spouse could hurt so much. I wish I could go back in time and tell her from my heart how much she means to me, and how important she is to me and to living my life itself. She was everything to me. Tell your spouse how you feel about them from your heart and don't hold back. When she quit sex and showing affection, I became resentful and a butt. And I wasted so much of my life doing that. I wish we could have seen a video like this long ago. I spent the last 13 or 14 years just clueless about this issue.

In the old days, I am 75, I did not allow sex before marriage. So,, I controlled the on / off switch, not her.
