It sounds like Jen has developed a really good relationship with health and fitness, where she enjoys it but isn't obsessed by it. Its quite admirable, and probably easier to maintain. You can have the off burger, or pizza.. and you're doing things to the enjoyment of them rather than an arbitrary time pulled out of thin air.

The secret to longevity in life is vitality... Every living thing in the universe that isn't growing, is dieing. Mark, it seems the "real" progress in this journey was that you're the one who found the growth that will not only increase your longevity, but your vitality as well... which is just another way of saying enrichment (quality of life). Making your wife the "real" educator here. Yes, she improved as an athlete (or at least discovered her inner athlete), which will improve her longevity, but she already understood health is only one component... happy is the other. Well done all! Cheers!

I hit 40 terrified and now, 6 months from 50 can't wait for it 😂 Its an amazing age to work out, no one else over 40 bothers to do it (at least, not in great numbers!) but you are still young enough to do anything! Love it!

At age 40 I (6' tall male) went from 200 lbs to 170 but gave myself 2 years. The key was never stepping on the scale! And instead focusing on habits (cleaned up diet, more exercise and weight lifting). The pounds came off on their own and I got stronger without obsessing on the metrics. Focus on the habits more and numbers less.

This dynamic reminds me of me and my boyfriend. We've trained together for a while and initially he got frustrated that I'm was never going 'hard enough', but over time he's realised that consistency rather than straight out 100% intensity has provided me results without injury and allows me to continue enjoying the process. I think also generally men respond better to negative feedback to try harder and feed into their aggression where as women (including myself) prefer positive feedback in sport and to feel supported, even if we're not performing as well as usual.
@KneeGrowDoingKneeGrowThings
By that conclusion negative feedback leads to greater output than positive feedback
@damianwright3690
@damianwright3690 Год назад
I think we men respond better to /factual/ feedback - "We did well. Can we do better?" Usually, yes, if we review what we did and find places to improve (without going into flights of fantasy on what we can improve). But the fact is we get our 'pats on the head' in possibly a different way - achieving self set goals, being accepted by our peers, etc, rather than "You're the king/queen/whatever"

This resonates with me. I started working out for the first time in my 30s, and all the workout psychology and scaffolding I'd seen did not work for me at all. I started in a low stakes, gentle, forgiving, experimental way--I didn't have a grand goal or a "why." I didn't have discipline OR motivation. Poor exercise tolerance and physical awkwardness (something I think fitness people have a hard time truly understanding) as well as general perfectionism were blockers for so long. Plus, like Jen, I was a normal body weight and good health readings, so I wasn't motivated by a need or want for weight loss or any specific health marker improvement. I just wanted to give it a try in a chill way. And that was the first time I EVER learned why people enjoy exercise. Now a couple of years later, I'm so much stronger and fitter and exercise is an important and consistent part of my life. Without being an obsession.

That sounds great, because the step from "not at all" to anything above that is the hardest. It's the first two to three months that are the hardest. But if you keep expectations reasonable but keep just going at it 2-3 times a week, then an upward spiral will start: It gets easier, thus it's more fun, thus it turns more into "I want to, because I like it" then "I have to", thus you go a bit ofter and maybe a bit longer or a faster, you get better and so on. But in my opinion it's still extremely important to keep expectations reasonable to keep it up over the years. Because there is a limit of what you can achieve with exactly your body and exactly your amount of time you can or want to put into it. Keep it up!

Team work makes the dream work! My husband and I (both over 40 with knee issues) decided last year that we needed to do something or we wouldn’t be able to do anything after too long. We started just walking together, more so we had some time together and so he could decompress from work, and progressed in intensity, you can increase intensity by exaggerating movement, we found, although it makes you look like a loon. We looked like loons together but doing it together meant we could both change our lifestyle and feel supported. Winters here are a bit harsh so we joined a gym. He can be really hard on himself for not going as hard as he thinks he should and I have trouble with consistency due to boredom. I keep him from taking himself too seriously and remind him the goals will always shift but all progress is good progress, and he reminds me to not slack too much or we’ll be right back to where we started. People who haven’t seen us in a bit ask us what we’ve done, and we can say how proud we are of each other for sticking with it, together.

Having a healthy relationship with food and exercise that makes you happy and complements your life is key, and that looks very different for different people. Fitness does not have to be all or nothing. I was obsessed with fitness during my 20s and this took a toll on my mental health and my life, it also reinforced this completely absurd idea that looking good and being healthy takes tons of work. I'm in my late 30s... and i put no effort into fitness, i have no "fitness goals", i run when I feel like running and I don't if I don't. I don't feel bad if I sit on my butt for a week or two... and yet I maintain the same appearance year round that in my 20s required hours of daily exercise, and CONSTANT obsession over food. I was sooooo miserable then and now I don't think about these things at all and I've never looked or felt better.

I’ve found that “taking things seriously” in fitness is, for most people, unsustainable. Most people tend to set the bar low in their life in all things. That’s because of a fear of failure. When they fail, they quit (which is the only true failure and also, a tragedy.) But, when people go in without an expectation, they tend to live more for the journey as opposed to the outcome. It’s like traveling. When people have such a high expectation for the “magic” of a visit, only to arrive and find out it didn’t solve all of their problems (because it’s just normal life in a new location.) If more people chose to experience life with an open mind, lived one day at a time, we might actually start to have a healthy and cohesive population. It’s the rare few, like yourself, that can live for the goal and keep grinding until success. Beautiful message Mark! And congrats to Jenna for changing your perspective as much as she changed her lifestyle.

I'm good for a month or 3 and then fall apart when tragedy or severe life stress happens. I always say 80% of my workouts have to be "fun Social" And if I have a Bike event coming up in 1-2 months time I will spend my last 20% with hard bikeworkouts/rides and all strength and run swim I keep on a fun social level have worked for me for the past 15 years never really had any mental brakes just had times where I cut out the swimming or the running if I did not feel like doing them at this moment.

I've recently tried my hand at discus and shotput again a full quarter century since my last competition and I absolutely suck at it but I can actually enjoy it again. For most of my adult life my ego would not allow me that joy since I drifted away from the sport due to lasting effects of a backinjury at 15, these days I'm happy to just go out and throw once or twice per week when my workschedule and the weather allows and I'm happier and more motivated to slowly get back in shape than I've been in a long time.

Watched this before, but watched it again because it's enjoyable and also I think you've found an important insight to working out: Do what's fun and enjoy it. Leave the misery to the miserable. Thanks Jenna and Mark. Cheers!

Mark, your and Jenna's first Hyrox attempt inspired me to give it a go at the age of 60. A friend and I did the women's doubles at London last week and we had a great time. My outlook is probably more like Jenna's. As you get older, it's great to be still able to get better at something even if you may never achieve any podium finishes. Although secretly I'm hoping if I keep going long enough I may simply outlive the competition!

Jokes aside....thats a great plan! I'll happily be the only 90 year old there and stand on top of a podium! Outliving the rest is a skill in itself!!!!!!

It happens! Although my parkrun 5k time is rubbish (29.14 PB), my post-race email almost always says 'You were 1st in your age group...' Being over 75 isn't all bad! And despite never having run a Half Marathon before, I was 7th in my age group in the Scottish Half Marathon Championship in Inverness in March. Hang in there and you'll work your way to the top!

I agree, I’m 65 and have been running for 5 years. I’m not getting faster but not slowing up ….. so I may outlive other runners so I get to the top 😊🥴

This is the most inspiring channel for me, from running 100K to a video talking on how to take it easy and enjoy it 😊 ,, I used to take it hard on every running seasons I had but now its mostly easy/fun runs, and eventually the more you keep doing it the better results you will get overtime no need to push your self specially if you are no any olymopian runner 😅😅

This is fanbloodytastic! Jen won’t regret making the changes now, I’m built the same as her and it’s so easy for the weight creep to catch up when you hit 40, I used to eat everything in sight but I had to do a calorie deficit recently and started weight training more to stop the creep., which worked. Strength training is so important for running as you get older too.

Made some interesting observations and learnings here Mark. Exercise is individual and as people progress with (being active) lots of changes happen - physically and mentally. Mindset changes, goals change, your approach, how you think about exercise changes. Lots more variables involved. Great recap and it's great to see how you've both learned from the experience together 😊
