I'm showing my wife Alien for the very first time!
In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causing him to fall into a coma.

Ridley Scott at its best if you ask me. This is also one of the very few movies where the sequel was just as good. And thats Cameron at his best. And he did it more than once. What an outstanding era of filmmaking.

@@neutchain7838 Yeah! It was a perfect move to make the sequel more action oriented, since we've already seen the alien, and know what it is. So it doesn't make sense to do another slow burn horror flick, since it isn't as scary the second time.

Just based off the numbers, you'd think Hollywood would always be clamoring for better-written movies. $190M _PROFIT_ is incredible, and for a measly $11M investment. Same thing with Juno, the indie film made for $6.5M for a gross of $231M. All you have to do is not hire a fucking moron to write the exact same script as another movie that already did horribly. Spend an extra 5 minutes reviewing the scenes for tropes that irritate people, and find a way to change the scenario just a little bit for a better payoff. But nooooooo, they crunched the numbers and decided they'd rather have smaller profits at a steadier pace by dumping huge sums of money into CGI and advertising, trying to dumb down the audience so we'll accept whatever scraps we get from the bad sequels of better movies. Ugh.

Fun fact about this first Alien movie: the script was written with just the characters having surnames and no first names, so that the casting department didn't have any preferences for the gender or race for any particular character, it was literally all down to how well they could act. And the result was probably the first heroic, smart, and capable female protagonist in cinema. Ripley is the epitome of strong female character, because she was written as a strong character, and Sigourney Weaver brought her to life.
@anime4life209
@anime4life209 Год назад
another fun fact: when the alien first emerged from the guy, NONE of the characters aside from the film crew and the actor himself knew about it or how it was going to be played out so that the dramatic effect would be at peak levels. so, when it came time for the reveal of the alien and he went into histerics, the rest of the cast LEGTIMATLY thought something was wrong, especially when the blood spatter happened. that's why they were freaking out so badly. it was only after the alien was revealed that it clicked and they calmed down and ran with it. in Alien 2 when Bishop was doing the knife trick with Hicks, he was ACTUALLY doing it and Hicks' reaction was a legitimate reaction and in Alien Resurrection when Ripley made the shot with her back turned away from the hoop, it was a legitimate and real shot. it wasn't scripted or improvised. she ACTUALLY did that AND on the first try too.

Awesome you watched the Director's Cut. That Cocoon Scene is nightmare inducing. Aliens is a great sequel. And again, Alien 3 ISN'T bad as long as you're watching the ASSEMBLY CUT. That's almost...almost a masterpiece of a film if it weren't for certain...story decisions. But despite its depressing tone and atmosphere I like it. I think its also got the best soundtrack out of the four main films.
@RickTBL
@RickTBL Год назад
This is not the director's cut. Ridley Scott left the cocoon scene out of his original cut, because it slowed things down. That original cut would be the director's cut. I know there are versions like this one, that include everything Scott left out, and they get a "director's cut" label slapped on them, but it's purely for marketing. To make more money. It's not as if there are no "director's cuts", they exist, but they are rare. Most "director's cuts" are just different cuts, that exist so you will spend more money. Sometimes it's very different, like with Lord of the Rings. The extended versions are the ones Peter Jackson really wants you to see. They were shortened a little bit for theaters and were still very long. I believe, in this case, the extended version might also be considered the "director's cut". It's the opposite of Alien. It's confusing, but those who sold the CDs don't mind, because they made a lot of money in the confusion.

Even to this day it upsets me they open it with killing Newt and Hicks. It soured my taste for the movie the whole film. I didn't hate it, but it didn't quite measure up to the 1st 2. I have it about equal to 4 in watchability
@RickTBL
@RickTBL Год назад
@@bwestacado9643 There's a good reason why it makes you feel that way. Killing Newt and Hicks was "bad storytelling". It was bad because it made Aliens seem pointless. Ripley fought so hard to save Newt and Hicks and succeeded, only to have them be dead for no reason. Actually there was a reason. The studio wanted another Alien movie, and there was no room for Newt and Hicks, so they just killed them. Once you get past all of that, Alien 3 is a decent movie, but I prefer to think it all ended with Aliens.
@bwestacado9643
@bwestacado9643 Год назад
@@RickTBL That's the best way to handle it. It's not like the franchise improved from there lol. I don't mind Prometheus, but only if I think of it as it's own movie lol. Once I try to duct tape it into the Alien franchise, it gets ridiculous lol. I don't know what Ridley Scott was thinking with Prometheus, but he made the Alien universe feel overly convoluted for no reason. I don't like the David android and how they just kill off every character he comes into contact with. The idea he made the aliens is a horrible joke

I think not knowing what truly happened to Parker and Lambert is what makes it a terrifying scene. Hearing it from Ripley’s perspective as Lambert is screaming and struggling to breathe is something that has always stuck with me. We get implications of what happened to them but all we know is that Lambert’s death was drawn out and extremely painful. It doesn’t sound like a stereotypical movie death, it sounds like someone is truly being put through unimaginable pain and stress in their final moments and showing that in gratuitous amounts of details I think would dampen the terror. Parker’s death also makes me incredibly sad as he appears to be kind of selfish throughout the film as he seems to care about shares rather than helping people, but in his final moments he only cares about attempting to save Lambert who unfortunately but justifiably freezes.

@Daveyboy100880
@Daveyboy100880 Год назад
Having the scream cut out halfway through it was a genius bit of sound editing. It makes it so much more effective and horrifying! The various fates of the characters are interesting - Brett is killed to be converted into a new egg, Dallas is captured to serve as a host when the egg is ready, Parker is killed as he was a direct threat, and Lambert… well, I have one theory about what happened to Lambert, that may be thinking too deeply about it all! In some of the supplementary material about the characters’ backstories that appears as an Easter egg on the original Alien DVD (possibly written by Scott himself, as it’s known that he wrote background material for the actors to base their characters on), it mentions their genders and seems to indicate that Lambert was transgender. This could be why the Alien seems fascinated by her - it senses something different and apparently investigates in the most horrific way possible before deciding she isn’t a viable host. I have no way to know it that’s what was intended, but in my head-canon it’s what happened!

That's a myth. It would be impossible to film a scene like that involving a prosthetic body without the cast knowing what was going to happen. They just didn't know how much blood was going to used and Veronica Cartwright didn't expect to get hit in the face with it.

"Alien" was Sigourney Weaver's first film role. The large chamber that Brett walks into while looking for Jones the Cat is called "The Claw Room." It's the landing gear you're seeing hanging down with the chains. The production design and set dressing is some of the best work I've ever seen in a film. The same alien set was used for both the Space Jockey and Egg Chamber sequences. One Ridley Scott had finished filming all the scenes of the crew discovering the ship pilot, the Space jockey was pulled out, a central pylon was put in and the set was redressed with about 50 alien eggs. A blue-light laser was used to create the layer above the eggs. Along with a completely different lighting setup, you'd never know it was the same set.

I forget which big rock band it was that was on a sound stage next door to where they were filming. You heard right. They knew of course that the baby alien was supposed to come out (they've even been shown the puppet) so it didn't come as a total surprise. But the blood was supposed to be nothing fancy. However, Scott and the technical crew filled the torso with animal entrails and fake blood and went all the way (John Hurt was evidently in the know), and also the pump broke during the scene and the blood went everywhere and none of the actors anticipated that. You can see especially the faces of Yaphet Kotto and Tom Skerrit during the first splash of blood. Their shocked face. They really didn't know if it was an accident or part of the scene. And when the alien came out, if you watch the unedited scene (it's here on RU-vid), blood flew everywhere, especially on Veronica Cartwright who slipped on the blood and fell on her butt. Her shocked reaction is 100% real. The unedited scene is quite graphic, if it was left as it is in the film, the audiences would have freaked out even more. I mean the blood was coming out like a geiser.

Loved your reaction, I know, you both have seen really horrifying scary movies, before seeing this, and it's quite awesome to see your wife, nearly jump out of her skin, approaching 50 years, to see a younger audience still terrified by this movie, Alien has still got it!,...we all were hoping for Dallas to make it to, there's an obvious close relationship between Dallas, Ripley, perhaps because they've shipped out, together for a long time, there's no like time-line as to how long they've been together as a crew, save Ash, when Dallas states how he was quickly added to the roster, but there is a more familiarity, almost family like, with all but Ash, with him it's more a visiting somebody, and some crew members were more plain, no concealment of how they felt about him, the dislike, mistrust,(when Parker tells Ash he's in his seat, and then after he gets up, Parker brushes, like he's cleaning the seat of Ash's germs, huh or whatever),..that scene has always stuck in my mind, how,,maybe all the crew were not trusting of Ash, on some level, he "rubbed them the wrong way", as it's said about people, even people you meet for the first time, you just get a vibe I guess,..so love how Ridley developed these characters, the hint of a little rudeness between some of the crew, also maybe showing how long they'd been together in space, Parker was ready to huh ditch them and get back to Earth so he could party,..makes you wonder how things go up in the ISS space station orbiting above us now, not sure how long they're up there, each at a time, but surely the politeness, curtious demeanor wears off at some point, after a month, 2 months, 3, huh, or is it less than a week,..Alien, should also serve as a lesson in getting people ready for long term space travel, even on an oil rig, you can still get away from people, see some scenery, fresh air,. but being stuck on a spaceship, look where Dallas was when Ash called him to come see Kane(after woke from his Alien induced "coma"), sitting alone in the shuttle, listening to, what Mozart, Bach?,..the shuttle was his getaway, the most he could getaway without suffocating, lungs exploding, couldn't just open a window, door to get some fresh air, plus you know the astronauts never offer up the body odor that must be circulating in a spaceship,.it's always, ohh the view of earth from a mile up,..lol, never, ohh boy was it rancid in that enclosed space,..we should have an idea riding on planes,..do keep going, enjoy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

I actually liked that they went with a female lead instead of a male lead because I think it's very empowering for women. They could've easily gone with a plethora of action male leads in Hollywood at the time. But the fact they chose Ripley to be a woman is a historic feat for Sigourney Weaver and NOT Jennifer Lawrence.

I watched this movie when I was way, way too young. I think I was 8 or 9 years old. It scarred/scared me for life. I remember having trouble going to bed thinking those Alien creatures would be crawling on the ceiling to get me. I don't know if you remember the Disney ride "THE Great Movie Ride" where it would take you through scenes of a move. I was on that ride and those Alien creatures popped out of the ceiling. I swear I screamed the most blood curdling scream. I was the only one who screamed which was embarrassing. I was 21 years old at the time I rode that ride. I'll never forget it. Those Alien creatures still scare me after all these years.

It is truly remarkable how well this movie holds up, considering it was done in 1979. What’s genius about it in my view is that, even though it takes place in the future, it is a future that is lived in. These are basically space truckers - they’re not scientists or space heroes - and there’s nothing sterile about their environment, it’s dark, damp and gritty. It lends a heightened sense of realism that was lacking in sci-fi up until that point. Also, let’s give some props to one of the best taglines in movie history: ”In space, no one can hear you scream”. (It sent shivers down my spine long before I was old enough to see the movie).

Best thing about the movie is it has just enough suspense to make you jittery waiting for it to appear, but isn't bloody over the top with gore when the xenomorph kills a crew member. Toss in a android that has the mission to bring it back at the expense of the loss of the crew (played by Bilbo Baggins himself lol) and you have a space horror done right.

Small correction: none of the characters were written for specific genders but they did assume that the movie would have a male lead. Ripley and Dallas were also originally written to be romantically involved which is really interesting for the time period considering they were taking male and female auditions for both roles. I don't know if a same sex relationship would have gotten past the studio back then but this and the lack of defined gender roles shows the writers were really forward thinking.

Jen was wandering about the Alien/Xenomorph life cycle, so in short: Alien has a hive-like life hierarchy (similar to bees) and several stages/cycles of life. The first cycle are the eggs "ovomorphs", whitch are layed by Alien/Xenomorph Queen. The eggs can remain in "standby mode" as long as necessary, they "come alive" when they sence a life-form in their vicinity. The eggs contain the 2nd cycle: "the facehugger" whitch jumps from the egg as a parasite latching itself to the nearby life-form, whitch from that moment acts as a host for the 3rd cycle: "the chestburster", actually a baby Alien whitch grows inside a host, and bursts its way out when they grow to a certain size. When the chestburster bursts out, it grows to the last cycle: a full sized Alien "The Xenomorph" at a very fast rate (whitin a few hours) to the size of 2.15-2.75m high and 180-275kg (these are Human fenotype dimensions: if the host is a human).

Her face when the xenomorph came out of the chest I have to say is priceless. That was the response I was waiting for my God I'm glad she responded that way oh man that was a joy I had to rewind the video back to that spot when it came out the chest like I said did that like seven times straight like yes that's the response the same time I don't blame her for having that face because a lot of people who've never seen this movie at all heard anything about it usually that's the face that happens and I was a kid and I saw this when I was 7 years old in 1997 and I was just shocked to see if this burst out the chest that was freaky as s***. But it's definitely a beloved horror movie I mean my God. In a lot of it still holds up to this day I mean it's ridiculous how it's like over 40 years this movie came out.

This movie is one of those masterpieces that changed how people made movies. The reason you know to stick together, maintain protocols, and kill that damn thing again and again is due to this movie. After all, there's no such thing overly dead. I like that the first thing she thinks of is a penis with teeth, and we then keep trying to save the kitty cat from the bigger, well you know....
@el-violador
@el-violador Год назад
One thing I think is under rated about this film is all the crew have a different point of view that feels real. Ripley is the warrant officer. A stickler for protocol and is against allowing the exposed crew members back into the ship. Dallas is the captain who's primary concern is the welfare of the crew and wants to bring Kane into the ship in an effort to save him. Ash is the science officer who's main concern is the specimen. Lambert (while it has nothing to do with her position) is navigation, she is scared for her own safety. Parker, an engineer is concerned about whether he will get paid for the extra risk and wants the others quarantined. Brett I can't really remember if he had an opinion. Every crew members response is a real and believable one (except Ash but he isn't "real") and while some are more noble than others, I can understand their point of view

I love that everything in this movie was practical. Even down to not telling the cast and crew about the Squibs and Chestburster in the iconic scene. They were a legit terrified but knew something was up when all the Camera's and gear were covered in plastic just before the scene. I highly recommend watching New Rock Stars "Deep Dive" on these films, you'll learn a lot. And how spot-on correct your wife Jen is.
