That's a great winter setup... Worth the extra weight, to be safe, warm and dry in those conditions. It isn't cheap, as you said, but you need gear to be able to do the job for which it's intended, and be reliable in winter. Cheers Claire.

Good point about keeping your first aid kit accessible. Last week I accidently cut off part of the tip of my finger with my knife. Carelessness on my part. Digging around one handed for the first aid kit was pretty difficult, and also discovered how difficult it is to open a wound dressing with one hand! I think I might look at getting a mini first aid pouch to keep clipped to my belt.

That's a drawback of winter camping, you have to carry a lot more weight. I am happy to see you are using a proper tent for winter. You should trade one of your empty water bottles for a metal thermos. You can fill it up with hot water before bed, cover it with a thick sock, and you can use it instead of heat pads to stay warm in your sleeping bag. Plus you will have water to cook breakfast with!

Love seeing it all fit back inside a rucksack 😂 that’s always the hardest part for me especially in a tiny 1-person tent with no room to swing a squirrel let alone a cat haha. Having bought 2 tarps before Xmas I’m getting myself a Hunka XL bivvy next, I still can’t decide on which down sleeping bag I want yet, Ascent 900 seems hugely popular but also reading good things about the Alpkit Skyehigh & Pipedream.
@WildBeare
@WildBeare Год назад
Hey Tom yep always fun packing away inside the tent isn't it 😄 Oooh I looove the Hunkas! They're a bit heavier but very reliable. I use the standard size to go over just my bag, or the XL if I want it to go over both my bag and mat. Hope you love yours when you get it. I've heard really good things about the Alpkit bags too, although I've not tried one yet. Thanks for watching and Happy Camping :D 🏕

Been looking forward to this one. Fantastic video. I love the idea of using a dry bag for the tent. I think I’ll be looking at the Highlander foil mat. I will say one thing. If that’s ok? I think the axe you have is for climbing, as the lanyard is attached at the bottom. If you get a straight ice axe, that will have the lanyard attached near the top. So you can walk with it rather than climb. 🏕🏕
@WildBeare
@WildBeare Год назад
Thanks Neil! Ooo is it? I got this one because it's light and it seems to do the same thing, but I don't know anything about ice climbing so I'm probably missing something haha. My previous one had a straight shaft but it was a bit heavy for my liking. Thanks for watching my lil video and hope you're having a lovely week :) Claire 🌿🐻

I use a Vango Hydra 200 in snow, MCSS Carinthia modular sleep system (ex- army) as my base kit for -20.c. Always use a goretex bivvy bag to stop damp getting in. Tent footprint is a must and in winter a heat reflective large tent footprint. In winter temps below -15.c If I will use the US army improved modular sleep system but it’s heavy! For the money it’s a great piece of kit. The fact that you can actually pop 3 sleeping bags together if you wanted from the standard 2 makes it work down to -35 in comfort. I always use s cotton liner for comfort.

12Kg is super lightweight for winter kit, I went for a hike just the other day with a 20Kg pack normally it's about 25Kg. 12Kg is summer weight. And yes your gear is super expensive, if you can afford it then great. I use old ex military gear because its cheap & will last forever. Really loved you last video with the snowy camp. Do you only carry one lighter? On knives remember 2 is 1 & 1 is non. Keep making the awesome content.

Ooof..25Kg Hard core! I'm currently going for a 2hr, fast paced hike each weekday morning in the country lanes (6am start!) with my backpack, increasing the weight by 1Kg every 2 days, currently up to 18Kg, and planning to top out at 20, and I'm starting to feel it :) I get hip & knee aches just thinking about 25Kg!

Hi Claire that was really interesting! I was just thinking how important it is to make sure everything is totally dry before packing it up. Please can you tell me what you do with your kit when you get it home. Do you air your sleeping bag on the radiator? Does it take a while to dry? Have you a garage you hang your tent up to dry? We once packed a rubber tarp up -used under our 6 man tent- and forgot about it. Needless to say cleaning it over the washing line a few weeks after was rank-I think it was the mud and shrivelled putrid bodies of the earth worms that reminded us not to leave dirty tarps to fester again lol! Looking forward to your next adventure! Take care Helen & Andy Hogan 🌲🌲xxxx

That axe is more suited for sking and on slopes with its curve. you'd be better with a straight shaft for walking, and if you hold it down your side the bottom should meet the top of your ankle, which helps to use it on flat an medium inclines as a pole. Great load out though. KT tape is good for if you get blisters or pull a muscle on multiday hikes

Great vlog Claire, really interesting. Your winter kit is chalk-and-cheese different to the summer kit. Amazing to see all that for 12kg. Theres an ice-axe head cover on Amaz*** which is fairly cheap and would make the iceaxe a bit less 'pointy' to carry, and save it prodding holes in the rucksack.

It’s good to see you have a routine packing and unpacking it helps to make sure you don’t forget something. A tip I learned from my grandma, she put scented soap in drawers at home, when you open a drawer it had an amazing smell so I pack my stuff with a bar of my favourite soap it’s so nice.

Ahh that's nice, I totally get that ☺️ I don't wear perfume but one of my photography clients gave me a tiny vial of lovely fragrance. So I spray it on a sweet elephant I keep on my bed, I also spray it on my camping pillow so it makes my tent smell like my bed at home. It's a simple comfort that can make all the difference in a stormy or unfamiliar territory 🤍

Mm it's not too bad, it feels really heavy though when you add on 2kg of food, whatever water you want to carry and then 3kg of filming gear 😬 darn filming gear haha! Thank you for watching, hope you're having a good week :) 🌿🐻

Well that ís heavy, and if I had to carry 20kg with me on a weeklong trip in winter I'd bring a sled. When I started all this in my twenties that was my average weight on a summertrip. Which was fine back then but over the years and now nearing my forties the knees and back but especially the feet just don't appreciate that as much 😅 I try not to go above 16kg total weight these days, which means I cap out at 5 full days of hiking during summer. Which in all honesty is enough anyway, I'm allways looking forward to the hotel and taking a long shower on that final day ... and the bed, and a chef preparing a steak.

You've got quite a comprehensive set of gear there, just 1 change I would recommend is to exchange the opinel for a multi tool, small swiss army knife or similar, couple of extra tools there, incase you need to tighten a screw up on your tripod or similar. Just a thought, the wife an I always look forward to your delightful videos. Thanks Ant

I just bought 2 tents ⛺️ 1st one cost me £79:99 and it can occupy upto 4 persons which I bought in Aldi supermarket but heavy to carry on walking camping trips and my 2nd tent only 2 person tent from halfords which sells bikes and anything to do with car's which I paid £25 and very light to carry amongst other camping equipment like knife fork and spoon set £3:50 sleeping bag called "mummy " £15 and a collapse wash bowl £8 total £51:50 very cheap so I can't wait to try them all out.

Loved this video Claire. I've been hiking for over 40 years. Although I have lots of quality gear, I have never been able to afford the Hilleberg Soulo tent. Just checked prices, with the base liner, nearly one thousand pounds !! Who in this modern day can afford to spend that much on a tent ? It's almost as much as my old car ! Not realistic today for most.

Hi Claire..yet another fab vid. What about footwear..boots ? What you using now.. Have you tried other brands..maybe Army surplus like Iturri, or Haix or Altberg ? Do you feel high price reflects quality or can you get some very good cheap , long lasting bargains ? I have tried both. Just got a pair of Peter Storm in the Go-Outdoors sale £120 to £35..seem ok so far. I had some expensive Altbergs once but the soles are very hard. Need to source good insoles. I have an old pair of Aldi boots..foil and fur lined..£29..fantastic and waterproof. Boot maintenance is my thing..if you treat them from brand new..wax, oil and flame them they will last for years. What do you think High Priestess of all things Wildness ?

Dear Wildeare, in a previous kit (storage) upload you mentioned " Bob Dog ". When will we see Bob Dog in one of your camping trip videos ? Also what do you think of the latest law on "wild" camping, so lovingly bestowed upon the citizens of this country, by our "glorious" leaders within the Tory Party ?

Not sure where to start with the comments…first off, omg your rapid evolution to one of the top RU-vid channels, you should have a million subscribers. The gear choices show an obvious series of choices based on USE, not some armchair BS. I’ve never even seen a Hilleberg tent but from what I can tell they are the Gold Standard of bomber tents. You post some of the absolute best videos on RU-vid, I hope you continue! I’m still not sure how your partner can leave you to do these solo adventures, be safe!

Ahh thank you, you are too kind! 🤗 The growth of the channel has shocked me too and is still something I struggle to get my head around (I'm actually quite introverted believe it or not haha!) but I'm very grateful for it :) Yep this gear is serving me well for winter, it's a constantly evolving thing I find. Hope you're having a great week! 🌿🐻 Claire

Gotta warn you, I've had that same Anker powerbank and it just suddenly quit charging one day, after a little over a year of use. I didn't even bring it into the cold. I've heard better things about the Nitecore.

I was a bit surprised that you put your tent inside your rucksack liner - especially as it had snow on the outside. Maybe that was because you were distracted by filming. Personally, I'd have it outside so that melting water didn't collect in the bottom of the liner.
