Stealth Wild Camping under a Tiny Tarp in the Rain 🌦️

For this wild camp in the aftermath of storm Eunice, I gave my tiny tarp a try in the rain. At 1.5m x 2.8m and 260g (excl. pegs & lines) it’s a dinky lil thing, but hard to get enough coverage to keep the rain off entirely, unless you have it really low (very claustrophobic!)
I had a lovely break in the rain at bedtime when the sky cleared and I had a beautiful display of stars, the Big Dipper right over my camp and then watched the moon rise through the trees 🌝✨
See you next time for a luxury camp in crazy wind and rain (shocking I know), with my tent, tarp S, Bushbox and some delicious fire-cooked food 😍

I think it was a fox, they sound horrific like that i had one a few metres from camp once making that racket for over an hour it put me into a panic it was so loud and so constant

You won't go wrong with an Osprey rucksack Claire. They might be expensive but they're super comfy and really take the effort out of carrying heavy loads. Hope you get some sunshine on camp soon 👍🙂

You always seem to make the best of any weather situation. I've only hike-camped a couple times in Rocky Mountain Park in Colorado - all my other camping trips (about 100) have been on canoe river trips where we can carry lots of gear. Having to pack extremely light and efficient is a real challenge.

Hi Claire, Your videos are amazing. Looking forward to the next one. I have been using a Karrimor Panther 65 rucksack for ages. It is well designed for walkers. With easy access to kit and the back support system is adjustable, comfortable and stable. It is 2.1kg, so only a little bit lighter than big blue. It can hold 65 - 70 litres.

Fantastic nightime shot of the stars through the trees 👍; have experienced something similar out here in one of my local wildlife parks, except it was fireflies and seen from a small rowing boat under the trees; an unforgettable experience in this increasingly concrete and brick world. Heyy, yeh tarp camping in the rain isn't for everyone, certainly not with a tiny tarp 😄 Thank you, this drone is actually no.3, I lost another one after that first one was lost 😭 No.2 lost connection up on Glyder Fawr and whizzed off 2km into the distance before running out of battery.. sad times. So this one no.3 is second hand. I don't think I'd be the best person to do a drone how-to-fly 😂 I could maybe do a how-NOT-to-fly haha, or a how-to-crash-your-drone. So brave to camp in the cold , dark ,wet, woods under a full moon , with wild creatures announcing their presents . Oh and a drone gone wild .. Best part was the hot chocolate and whisky , and you smiled the whole time . You always make a difficult situation seem normal . I always use a much larger tarp. If stealth camping, I pitch it low to the ground, but still have plenty of space. Like you I like going out in the rain, so a larger tarp also allows you to reconfigure if the weather closes in. Love your videos by the way!

Claire, I am really glad that you mentioned choosing kit that blends into the environment. For people that live and work in the countryside, it is rare to see them wearing dayglo colours that so much hiking and camping kit features. In places like the Lake District or North York Moors (which my home turf) where there are many hikers but the sight of hundreds of people on the hills with bright coloured jackets on a weekend really is pollution and spoils the natural beauty of the landscape that those people wanted to enjoy. It is also a place people live as well and I do think walkers need to consider what it is like to live in place where hundreds of people walk every day within yards of their home. The 'leave no trace' message is one that has sunk in with most people but I would add 'blend in and minimise impact'.

Hey Brian, yep I agree although it takes me time to be able to afford to change my gear to blend in more, it's the direction I want to take even if it has to be gradual. Although, there is the safety aspect in that it's safer in an emergency or rescue situation to be wearing bright colours.. I love to watch you in the serenity of the forest. Those unknown noises can really be spooky. I haven't been camping in a while and it is wonderful being out in nature. I live near a wildlife management area and there was a trail by my parents old house that goes out to it but since my parents died the property belongs to someone else now. If I want to go out there I will have to find another way. Quick funny story about sounds in the night forest, I was going bow hunting one year and on the first day I was up quite early to get to a place that I had been scoping out. It was still dark and I was using a climbing tree stand. While attaching it to a tree a screech owl hooted right behind me. It was so loud and chills ran up and down my spine so I made haste to get off the ground. By the way, didn't get any deer. The spot I picked was near a shallow spot in a stream where it seems all the animals use it for crossing. I saw a deer as it was heading right for me when it stopped. Then I heard what made him stop, several kids decided to go joy riding on a 4 wheeler and was following the wildlife path and came straight to that crossing. They bogged down in the stream and it took 20 minutes for them to get it unstuck. I was practically over their heads and they never once saw me. But I just watched as the deer turned around and went the other way. I did watch a doe and 2 yearlings wandering around. She saw me up in the tree and tried her best to get me to move. After about 10 minutes of stomping her feet she meandered off. Enough of this old man's ramblings, I really like your videos and am looking forward to more of them. Have fun and be safe!

At 2am whilst out in the open I half asleep reached out to get a buscuit from my bag and a fox bit into my hand and didn't let go until I was fully awake to let out a few curses. Lesson, cover up your food properly. 👍

Heya Claire, just wanted to let you know that you have inspired me to continue on a goal I set before lockdown. I want to walk along the coast from the Breakwater at Teesport down the coast to Whitby and maybe further. I was doing it in legs of between 6 an 8 miles, which is dictated by the need to return to my car. I complted nearly half before lockdown and then stopped. But as I said, you have inspired me and I did another leg on Friday between Staithes and Runswick Bay. Views were amazing, though I did the last 20 mins in the dark which wasn't ideal on a cliff top. Thanks again for the inspiration. Love your channel :)

Whatever that critter was that was screaming in the night was definitely, as you called it, "Blood curdling!" Thankfully, I have only been kept awake by bull elk and coyotes--both, thrilling experiences! Another GREAT video, Claire! The star and moon footage was magical! Wonderful music, as usual. I love watching your videos to wind down at night and just keep them playing to fall asleep to. Id love to sleep in my garden but unfortunately weve had visitors from robbery scouts (they were checking if our house was worth it i guess) and im a bit scared to go out into my own garden at night :( I might sleep on the balcony this weekend though. I love breathing fresh air and listening to sounds and just laying beneath the stars 😍

Love all your content. So nice to watch. Really enjoy how much you enjoy what you are doing even if it doesn’t always go to plan. For your stealth overnighters take a look at the helikon tex summit backpack. Really comfortable, 40 litres so you go minimal. But I think it would really work for your style in the woods. Thanks for the great videos.

If you want to further waterproof your dry bags or any bags get some white spirit and some ordinary clear silicone sealant from screwfix or somewhere, mix them about 50 / 50 and paint it on generously, hang up to dry for a couple of days. WIll be very water repellent. Dont panic about the initial change of colour, it will go back to the natural colour after drying

I only use tarps, some reflective for colder weather, sometimes with a bug net... all are 10' (yeah, wrong side of the pond 😉) 3 m or less. I am a firebug, just have to have a fire! Thx for the vids!

a nice lean to with a porch is good in that weather for more height with a small tarp and bigger foot print and you can cove the back wall with twigs and leaves for added camo from the foot path. so glad you have a new drone, i was gutted when you lost the last one the night you stayed in the small cave. glad you are being safe in the wind un like some doing it for the views in storms. all the best to you and the new drone :D

I enjoy your videos but something I've noticed is the ceiling height of the shelters,I was taught to keep the ceiling height as low as possible in cool/cold weather just high enough to shimmy into your space since heat rises and the low ceiling keeps the warmth closest to you,less draft and better rain shelter..enjoy

Hi Claire,great video as per.Credit to you for using that very small tarp in these brutal weather conditions we’re getting at the moment,hardy and thick skinned girl you must be 🤣🤣.Its just as bad up in Scotland.Love the drone 👍😆.I use the Raindeer 55 rucksack by Wisport.Think its 52 and half litre,but has an additional 10 litres if you need it by lifting the lid,I love it,loads of pockets etc..very comfortable.take care best wishes.
