Wilderness gal from northern 🇨🇦 here… I have experienced winter temperatures ranging from +5ºc to -49ºc. I have several essential pieces of winter gear/clothing that I bought over 30 years ago and they are still going strong. I’ll share a bit of info about these and also the key features that I think are critical in winter clothing. These items keep me warm, comfortable, and loving winter: 1) A big winter 3/4 length parka that I wear when temperatures drop down below -10ºc. Key features include: - removable hood that also cinches down and is soft inside around the face/neck area. - chunky double zipper for sitting and driving - HUGE inside pockets that hold my toque (hat), mittens, and lip balm for when I am grocery shopping etc. 2) Toque (hat) that is lined and has ear flaps. Our ears are very sensitive to the cold and are susceptible to frost bite. 3) Mittens keep our fingers in contact with each other and are therefore much warmer than gloves. 4) Neck cowl or neck tube… is easier to manage than a scarf and it keeps the throat/neck very warm. 5) Ice cleats that strap onto your boots. These will keep you upright when it rains and the snow turns into a sheet of ice. 6) Keep extra winter clothing and a blanket (and food) in your vehicle for emergencies. I am stoked for Vlogmas Immy!! Thank-you so much for always going the extra mile to share with us all these fun, helpful, and interesting lifestyle tips and info. I sooooo appreciate you!! 💦🌎Ⓜary⛄❄🥶
I feel like thrifting can come with tis own style. It trains your mind to think less on a trend and more by fabric, color, and feel. Love all of your finds, but your grans sweater is just amazing. Same here, the thrift stores in the posh end of town just hit different!
Developing a personal style is so empowering. It's been a huge self esteem boost for me to work on that recently. In addition to really focusing on things that are made well and made ethically!
I would love to see more house-decorating videos. Like, what do you do for bed linens and napkins and also do you have tips on decorating second hand for holidays (if you do that!). Also second-hand gifting ideas and any cozy soup or hearty food recipes! Also would be great to like, follow along on one of your hikes, I do love winter hiking and the snow is gorgeous! Maybe some snow gear tips to have a successful hike - are you wearing some small snow grips on your feet in that clip? Hope that helps.
I imagine you're still getting your kitchen together, but some of your homemade essential foods (bread, tofu, bagels, etc) shorts are amazing - I'd love more of those for vlogmas, but totally understand if your kitchen isn't ready for that yet!
I love that you are starting to incorporate color in your wardrobe! I love the idea of a minimalist capsule wardrobe but I've never been fond of the all neutral everything. One thing that's helped me put together a cohesive wardrobe is figuring out "my colors". These are the colors I gravitate towards, that compliment me, and that I feel best in. I make an effort to seek out pieces in those colors and stick pretty close to them. It has helped me cut down on what I buy and it's so much easier to put things together in the morning and feel great in what I'm wearing.
We have the same style. Try compression socks and you can add some nice wool or fuzzy socks on top if you need. They really help with feet circulation ☺️
I never get bored with sustainable gift guide or wrapping videos. It would be nice to see what christmas decorations and that sort of thing is in the second hand shops in Denver Thanks Immy ❤🥀
I did not even know I needed this video. Thank you so much!! I am just starting to shop second hand online. originally I wanted to avoid online shopping, but in Germany (apart from the big cities) there are 0 to none thrift stores. There are some stores where you can donate for people that cannot afford to buy things new. So I do not want to take anything away from them… My favorite item for autumn and winter is a long sleeved skintight top to go under *everything* 😊
seeing your videos makes me want to wear dungarees so much!! i have some light ones for summer but i have been hunting the secondhand stores for a warm winter pair 👀 i would love a video on food waste!! if/how you are composting in your new home, any tips on storing scraps for late use, how to reduce waste generally. i am renting with housemates and as much as i want to set up a compost im super intimidated to do it in a small shared space
Great video! I've started snapping up second-hand merino tops in my size online. I'm the coldest person ever, even though it's not *that* cold where I am compared to you! I'd like to add more high neck and turtle neck tops, but I find it hard finding tops that are long enough to be tucked into trousers or leggings for extra warmth - and I'm only 4'11"! My best recent second-hand buys have been a Patagonia Better Sweater and a Banana Republic wool coat. And yes, lots of layers!
So excited for vlogmas! I would love to see the sustainable places you shop at in Denver. Or any vegan Christmas themed treats. Also, I’ve been following your journey for awhile, and it’s so amazing that you’re actually in Denver now!!! I know it wasn’t easy!!! Love your content 🎉❤️
Great suggestion Ellen… I’m with ya all the way on the suggestion for vegan Christmas themed treats. Love vegan food, love Christmas, love treats!!! Have a great day. Ⓜ️ary
Snowshoeing Hot springs Winterizing your rental to reduce costs Natural Grocers vs other denver grocery stores What to look for at Christmas markets for sustainability...
I feel you 100% on the fashion thing. I’m not “stylish” and had to work real hard to get my wardrobe to where it is now where I feel comfortable and look good. If you decorate for Christmas, I’d love to see a sustainable holiday decorating video! 😍
I recommend placing any fabric Items bought at thrift stores in a hot dryer for 40 min. Then wash as per usual. Bedbugs are prevalent in the Denver area and this will kill all stages of them. If you don't want to run a dryer for one or two items you can store the clothing sealed in plastic until you have more to do at once. Prevention is key.
Vlogmas idea! You could dedicate certain days to practicing a holiday/winter traditions or trying something new that you've wanted to do this time of year. For example, I've been wanting to give it a go at making natural ornaments/decorations such as dehydrated citrus garlands. Maybe even doing a holiday/winter tradition that your husband has done from his family. Looking forward to vlogmas!!
Excited for vlogmas! I’m just catching up on the last 3 videos :) Maybe you’d be down to do a simple day make up video? I know nothing about make up so a lot if tutorials are already way too much for me involving too many products. I’d love to learn about you’re glowy look though!
I love your content so much, it is always so cosy and calming and thoughtful, and you present everything so intelligently and kindly. It made me happy when you said the year has gone so fast because you have managed to finally get to america this year! This is so so random but I would love a video on how you clean things you’ve thrifted - especially bigger items like furniture because while I love thrifting, I’m sometimes nervous to bring these bigger items into my home (my partner had a bad moth experience with a second hand cupboard…) And maybe how you make a festive vegan roast!
Great that you're doing vlogmas!! Would also very much like to see some more of the nature around Denver and "come along" on a hike. Hope you have a really great time there! 🎄
It’s interesting hear someone’s perspective on the weather because I’ve lived here my whole life and never known anything other than layers layers layers! 😉 hope you’re enjoying it here so far 💚
I was recently in Denver to visit some family and got a chance to go thrifting. I was very impressed by the store we visited. Clean. Great prices. Excellent selection. Beat California by a mile. So happy you’re enjoying the Mile High City!
I've been brutal this week and donated a lot of my wardrobe. Like you, I didn't realise I had so many clothes! I also have different categories that I can't mix, so something I wear during the work day, I can't wear to go socialising, etc. 😆 I've been wanting some cords and dungarees for a long time now, and this video has inspired me to get round some of the local charity shops to try and find some gems!
I love the rich fall colors in my tops paired with some darker basic jeans or trousers. I have a pair of go to Ugg Boots that I can slip on by my back door that I wear most of the time...even if I just go to the mailbox in winter weather. Treaded soles are very important in bad wintry weather!
I went through the same thing! For a while, I tried to fit into the "minimal aesthetic" and got only neutral colors. Recently, I've been having so much fun mixing patterns and colors (still on the muted side, but I'm trying!) and it's connecting more to my inner child :') You have a lovely mix of winter layers! Glad you're enjoying snowy CO!
So excited for your vlogmas! Would love to hear more about your exercise/fitness journey as someone who is just starting to get back into prioritizing that myself and is looking for tips and motivation.
I love listening to you talk about your personal style and the things you think about daily regarding your clothing choices without having it doused in sustainability. Sustainability is really important, and it's not all that's important, and this video is a fine example of that. You're awesome!
my bf and i moved from Michigan to San Diego 7 years ago, and i was surprised by 2 things: that a lot of places here don't have carpeting and that it can actually get pretty darn cold (obvs not Michigan cold, but still enough for someone who gets chilly if a small breeze kicks up - you'll likely never see me without a hoodie even if it's 80 degrees out). no carpet and cooler weather = cooler/chilly floors, and I've found that my favorite, must have thing in this situation is COZY SLIPPERS 😸 i found the cutest pair, brand new, at a thrift store. they're washable (a must with "hardwood" floors that don't hold dust, dander, hair, etc like carpet does) and they have adorable hedgehogs on them, some of which have a little pear on their backs (prickly pears!)🤣
So glad you're doing vlogmas videos, can't wait to see them all. Potential topics: sustainable Christmas gifts, day in the life, take us with you on a hike, vegan Christmas food, but honestly I'm happy to watch whatever you post :)
so excited that you're doing vlogmas this year! i agree ARC and just the thrifting in general in Denver is great! its one of my favorite things about living here
I love your videos and have been following your journey for ages! I love this video and really appreciate your thoughts on clothing and being more intentional! I have soo many clothes and would love to pear them down but I'm so overwhelmed and worried I may need them! You've just moved miles away from home how did you decide what to keep and what not to and be intentional about it xx
I live in Ontario Canada. I find it really hard to have a small wardrobe because of the changing weather. It can get up to feels like 40 with the humidex in the summer and as low as feels like -40 in the winter. I have too many coats because of the changing weather. I have socks for every season too.
Oh my wardrobe will definitely expand now that I'm living somewhere, where the weather is more extreme. In the UK the weather is not that wild! Having a larger wardrobe is important when you need to keep warm!!
I'm so curious what the Goodwill on Broadway & Archer used to be because the inside of the building seems very fancy. One of the hardest layers I've struggled with in Colorado is a lightweight, breathable wind jacket for the windy season when it's still hot out. You freeze when the wind blows and then overheat as soon as it stops 😂
I have been really struggling with my style as I always want to be comfortable and I am always cold. So look like a walking pillow all the time 😂. Your style definitely has given me a lot of greater pointers. Also the boots that u wear, are they waterproof?? Cuz it rains so much here in the UK in winter that my shoes get soaked all the time.
I loved this! I wish the thrift stores by me had a better selection but It's interesting bc I have the opposite problem. All my clothes are statement/patterned pieces so I have nothing classic to pair them with lol Also I've said this before but if you're comfortable showing I'd love to see a house tour for vlogmas!
Where I live, in the wilderness of northern Canada, it is very rural… no pavement where I live and also no cell reception… you get the idea, eh? We all live in big clunky winter boots for 5- 6 months of the year as warm feet are essential. When we go to a social event or, in some cases, even to work we all have nice winter slippers (with treads) or lightweight indoor shoes that we wear to a community event or a social gathering. I’m just curious, does anybody else do this where they live? I love to have big inside pockets on my winter coat to carry my slippers to social gatherings. 🌎💦Ⓜary⛄❄🥶
I have a hard time finding clothes I like especially second hand. I'd love to wear rock-metal-edgy-ish clothes but the Finnish weather and the fact that my chosen transportation is my bike really limit my options to practical instead of nice looking. I would love for once to wear something else than jeans and a sweater to uni but I would freeze otherwise...
I am curious to see how you manage 30 days of posting on here. Side note: my wardrobe is very colorful. Oddly high necks make me feel like I am going to choke.
