I always run in a hooded polyester/spandex sun shirt with the little thumb-hole paw sleeves. You can loop them over your gloves and it really keeps the wind out.

Fantastic video! Thanks! For a little bit more technical snowy/icy terrain, the Kahtoola K10 or KTS crampons fit running shoes well. That and a light ice axe (eg Petzl Gully) are a super combo and open up some opportunities in the mountains.

Thank you for this. I live at 1,300m in the French alps and usually (if it wasn't for climate change) I have to cope this sub-zero temperatures and ice and snow. And while I have it fairly well figured out, there are some great pointers here. Thank you. Only tip I would add is that a TNF Huila Jacket is a much more affordable alternative to the # Arc'teryx Cerium jacket. Arc'teryx are crazy prices and though I have never warn one I really struggle to understand why. Maybe it's because Jeremy Renner wore them in The Bourne Legacy 😉

i always cover my mouth with my buff in the cold. Keeps my face warm and helps my lungs stay warmer as the air gets warm as it passes the warm frabric.

Thanks for the great tips, Jeff! When it gets cold I also reach for the nordic skiing clothes, in my case I found Swix to be reliable and somewhat affordable. Those norwegians know how to face the outdoors in winter!

Hi Jeff love this video.! Here in Helsinki we are in the grips of winter. Snow depth is 40cm and today’s temp is -14C. I’ve taken your tip of arm sleeves (brand 2XU) to wear with a singlet and merino wool T-shirt. Over that I’m wearing a Halti soft shell, this is great down to today’s temp. When running through the snow I’m using the Icebug Pythos 5 and SealSkin waterproof sock, really good combo. Leggings are New Balance thermal, gloves and buff. When running at night I use the Biolite 750. Thanks

Awesome, thanks Dean! I’ll check out those SealSkin socks too. I’ve been looking for another option other than the Rocky brand that I mentioned.

I appreciate the feedback. I tried my best to include other brands in this one (Arcteryx, Icebreaker, Rocky), but the reality is that I primarily use Salomon products as a Salomon athlete! I’ll try to include more stuff for comparison though in the future.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a Polartec product actually. I always thought of them mostly as fleece fabrics but I see they use merino wool as well?

Thanks for your videos. Solid info without unwanted fluff or opinions. I found my way to your channel looking for cross-over information applicable to hiking; I'm trying to improve speed and mileage. Can you tell us about the socks you're using under the Gortex socks: just regular socks, socks + liners etc. Thanks
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
Thanks Robert. Under my Gortex socks I wear just regular socks, although I tend to wear a slightly lighter pair designed for running and not heavy hiking socks. As long as your shoes have a bit of extra room, you shouldn’t find it too tight of a fit.

I prefer a ski mask instead of a beanie. My ear lobes always slip out of a beanie and my neck gets cold too. The ski mask covers all with one piece of equipment.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
Yea, that’s a good call for when it’s really cold. It’s too mild here on the West Coast but in most places I’m sure it’s needed.
@56932982
@56932982 3 года назад
@@JeffPelletier Actually I use a ski mask even at temperatures just above freezing. I have one that is quite thin, light and breathable. Thinner then most beanies. There are also ski mask like things that are meant to be worn under a (motorcycle) helmet, that are quit thin and suited for not to cold temperatures.

@@56932982 do you have link to that face mask?
@56932982
@56932982 3 года назад
@@stoneslittle Unfortunately no link available anymore. I bought it years ago. It is made by Odlo. It is from there cross country ski product line. There current offerings look different to the thing I have. I also bought a cheap, generic Chinese brand ski mask made from thin fabric. The later was also advertised for sun protection in hot climate. The Odlo ski mask is better because it is more breathable. I use it at +5 Celsius and below. In general, as Jeff pointed out: Cross country ski products are a good fit for running. Where I live in Germany, we have a quite moderate climate and rarely "real" winter. (I.e. constant below freezing and snow. Though, fun fact, I am north of Vancouver, BC, Canada but just 8000 km east.) Only every few years we may get a cold January with -10 Celsius and maybe 20 cm of snow. I have some real thermo clothing from the Skins A200 product line, but I need it rarely. So I am not an expert on this. Ohh, there are also ski mask like garments for cyclists. This might be worth a look too.

Great video, thanks so much for all this info! I wonder how you pack all the gear, as winter gear is definitely bigger and bulkier than summer gear - do you use a bigger pack for winter runs? Also, I have found that I sweat more on my back where the pack serves as an extra insulation...i've yet to find a solution for this. Do you have similar issues? I would not want to take layer off because of the cold though. Maybe a merino layer would be better than a normal winter technical base layer? Do to wear your merino as a base layer?
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
Great questions. 1. Salomon’s new 12 litre packs with the single large compartment is usually big enough, but I sometimes use a 15L pack if I’m carrying extra safety equipment like a helmet. 2. Yea, it’s important not to overheat in the winter so that you don’t sweat and then get cold. This is why layering is so important so you can remove and add layers as you go.

Hi Jeff , I was wondering how do you attach your poles to your backpack (or vest) during a run when you don’t need them. I think you already answered my question in one of your awesome videos, but I don’t remember which one. Thanks! - Louis from Quebec city
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
Different Salomon packs all have different ways to attach your poles. For my 12 litre pack, I also have a quiver that I sometimes hook on to put my poles inside when not in use. What kind of pack are you using?

Way to much stuff. Sure, it depends on the person, but if you really move up the mountain you will be warm enough. Downhill a softshell jacket and some good gloves is more than enough. Just do some test runs yourself and figure out how much you really need
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
Fair enough, although this of course all depends on where you're located. It can get pretty cold here in the mountains in the winter.
