Anything made from 'GoreTex Shakedry Trail' material, never wets out and is 3-4x more breathable than your breathability winner here. I won't wear anything else now.
From a true practical running sense on a rainy winter morning slog definitely the Salomon jackets, but loved the aesthetic of the Under Armour Storm jacket for a park run. Great selection guys! Id love to see a review of a jacket like the Gore Wear R5 Infinitum for us zone 2 slow runners when its cold ❄️
I bought the inov8 Stormshell last year and still love it, comfy, very breathable and completely waterproof. The hood is the best fitting one I've had as well!
Having had a Salomon Bonatti jacket, and been disappointed with the waterproof layer peeling off around the neck, and being amazed at the quality of Inov8’s running shoes, I bought a Stormshell Jacket. Everything that I had liked about the Salomon, Inov8 has improved, on a massive level with the Stormshell jacket, when the jacket is done up all the way, if you’re not wearing the hood, it sits against your neck! And can’t flap in the breeze 👌
This video was perfect timing. I'm training for my first half marathon and need a good running jacket. I was eyeing up the Inov8 Stormshell and vou all verified it's awesomeness in this video.
Ronhill X Mountain Equipment is the BEST RUN JACKET!!! Waterproof | Super lightweight | Highly functional with jacket packable into the chest pocket | Doesn't stick to skin when you're sweating loads compared to other brands I tested like Salomon.
Easily the best jacket I have ever worn . Although I understand why it isn't raved about more: 1) Channels wouldn't be able to have best running jacket lists as shakedry is EASILY the best material for running/ultras 2) All shakedry has now been discontinued unfortunately due to climate change initiatives (although Gore stocked up apparently)
My favourite jacket is the Keela Saxon Jacket (limited edition) I won in a competition last year. I picked the orange one as I didn't want to run in the dark with a black one - I might look like an oompah-loompah but I don't care. I love it.
I spent a lot of time researching jackets and eventually went for the Gore R7 Shakedry Trail jacket instead of the Inov 8 Stormshell. The R7 trail is extremely breathable and light as a feather, very happy with it.
No, I managed to find them as I wanted something different for winter and trails, I have the £69.00 evadict jacket (now passed to my Son) which you awarded which was ok, but Harrier is so much better I have found with a lot of features, you should check them out if you haven’t already, local British company I believe.
I already own the yellow Decathlon jacket, plus more recently the Ronhill/Mountain Marathon for winter events and training. They both have served me well and kept me dry in heavy downpours. Out of the jackets that you have shown I would buy the new Inov-8 breathable jacket that Sarah modelled. I own nothing from Inov-8 and that jacket looks and sounds great, plus you can’t have too many waterproof jackets! Or I would choose the brooks run visible convertible jacket, to be safely visible when running at night and to be able to remove the sleeves and wear just the body if overheating 🥵
For winter visibility I have a cheap Lidl yellow fleece jacket with reflective panels. For continuous runs I find that once you're wet your base layers act like a wetsuit and retain heat... until you stop. I sweat so much that on runs most of the wet is on the inside whatever the weather.
Have always had my eye on the Inov8 stormshell, but can't afford it. Have just bought the excellent Harrier Exmoor waterproof jacket for £89 minus a 10 percent discount. Brilliant value from a well regarded small British company. Not sure why you did not feature it as most other running channels have reviewed it.
I've recently bought this jacket. It's highly waterproof and has great breathability too. Has some great features that you'd expect from higher priced jackets. Definitely worth £89
Great timing. I’ve been researching and in need of a running jacket. I’m probably going to favour the innov8 over the out-run the storm. Breathability is important to me. Thanks 🙏
For me during winter it's got to be the proviz. 90% of my runs are done before 6am so I'm back in time to get the kids up so it'll keep me seen ... don't worry the kids aren't home alone 😀
This video came at the perfect time, I need a new running jacket. Now I'm eyeing the Inov8 Stormshell, which hadn't been on my radar. Thank you for doing this!
The inov8 does indeed look great. Amazing colour and since it’s so waterproof, it sounds like it could be very versatile and not only used for long runs on Sundays but also for rowing during these rainy and cold British winter mornings.
Both Inov8 Stormshell and Bonatti trail are made from Pertex Shield +. How can one be more breathable than the other? Same as Goretex Active jackets. They will behave the same. Sure, design will make a difference on over all performance and comfort, but water resistance and breathability should be general the same. Go for your favorite fabric at the lowest price!
Thanks for the reviews and sharing the options available. I’m looking to update my wind jacket, this video helped. The Inov8 could be a viable option for me.
Thank you for your videos. I am new to running and find your videos fun and inspirational and have just signed up to for my first 10k race in February. This video is very useful as I am looking for a waterproof running jacket to get me through the winter. I like the Omm Kamleika as the stretch material sounds more comfortable and it has pockets which are a must for me.
Andy, the fancy dress is ❤! Thank you for this review. I just came in from a wet, wet run and was soaked through three layers. This review is helpful for thinking about a nice holiday treat. 😊
Thanks Sarah & Andy for a very informative video on an item of running gear most of us are going to need through the winter months. All great jackets in their own right but my favourite would be the Salomon for their overall quality & known reliability.
I’ve got one of the underarmour, but was thinking I’d gone for style over substance so was good to hear i hadn’t made that bad a decision !! The hood would be the only bit that lets it down. I like the look of the inov8, good reviews v informative
My question: How often do you wash a running jacket? I want "most smell resistant" lol. I have one I use occasionally but I worry about buying a nice one and washing it too much.
I've got the romhill mountain warehouse one. Think they've stopped making it now because they couldn't get materials for manufacturing the laminate. Very good gortex jacket.
inov-8: Stormshell best because Jacket breathability is key. With low breathable jackets you trap sweat inside and feel just as wet as a regular jacket
I have been eyeing that Under Armour jacket for the last few months, I'll definitely pop it on the Christmas wishlist now. I'd have liked to have seen Odlo on one of the awards shortlists. Their Zeroweight windproof jacket works and washes well, is comparatively good value and looks great too.
I did my first 5k race since my second was born just yesterday, and it was a windy rainy mess. I do not have a good running jacket that fits my post 2nd baby body, and I've been looking into them, so this video was perfect timing! I love the inov8 and will definitely be looking into getting that one.
From a visibility standpoint, I like the Proviz jacket. I run in the evening, so reflective wear is a must. The only downside is there is no insulation in the jacket, so you can't wear it on those cold, winter days (I live in Chicago, so gets chilly out here).
Hugely informative. A black running jacket for winter with long nights doesn’t make much sense from a safety point of view(even with a reflective hits) Keep up the great work!
Fab review and very timely guys as we're starting our prep for the TCS London Marathon 2023 and need an all-rounder to see us through our Winter/Spring training and all the joys of the British climate at this time of year. Out of interest, did the winning jacket score points for reflective detailing/visibilty too?
I’ve never owned a running jacket for rain or wind, but I’ll need one starting in Jan. when my Training begins with Fleet Feet (gotta choose soon). I liked the UA Storm, but you showed so many good ones that I had no idea about. Thanks, TRC! Gonna need to rewatch this video…
I've had the OMM Kamleki for the last 4 years and its excellent and lasts much better than I thought it would. I really like the soft non-crinkly fabric with mild stretch which means its comfortable as a windproof as well as a waterproof for all day use. I have been looking at the inov8 storm shell as my next jacket so pleased to see that come top of this review.
I would pick the Soar Ultra jacket, as it’s waterproof/breathable/wind proof and light. I like to run in jackets without hoods as they just get in the way and Soar is an amazing UK brand. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Love the DJ Andy 😂
Patagonia Airshed Pulover. Incredible versatile from cold to mid temperatures. Is not for raining but I try not run run in serious rain anyway. And it’s Patagonia…
Very interesting selection but the prices are scary. I have to stick to my sports direct options, as my running gear is put to the test and treated harshly. The women's puma top looked to be the best of the bunch.
I fell for the inov8 right from the start, really considering getting that one. It ticked like al the boxes. Except for the books jacket with the hi viz and packable functions. Super good video 👍💪🏃♂️
Inov8 all day long Salomon close second. My Decathalon Evadict jacket got saturated on a rainy day up Snowdon. Held out well for the day, but isn’t waterproof anymore. Buy cheap buy twice. You really have to be willing to splash the cash for for something that works.
I would love the Inov-8 Stormshell waterproof jacket. Living in the Pennines it’s more often than raining when I’m out running but I don’t like how cheaper waterproof jackets make me sweat while running so I don’t tend to wear a jacket so I would love a high quality breathable jacket like this 🙏
The greatest water proof jacket ever made is the Gorewear R7 SHAKEDRY … they are stopping production of the shakedry material due to environmental reasons. Better hurry and get one while you still can
I have the Salomon Bonatti Race WP and the regular WP Jacket, and just love them. I can wear My Salomon ADV Skin 12 set vest under the regular Bonatti, if it isnt stuffed to the limit
Im a fan of the underarmour. I have a blue underarmojr jacket. Its pretty light, balanced waterproof, wind break, pockets, pull cords to waist and hood tighten. Solid jackets for general all rounders and don't break the bank
Love the sound of the inov-8. I alsways struggle with the balance between protection and breathability, especially as I warm up/sweat quickly. Would love to check it out.
Rain, sadly, has not been happening too often here in California. I tend to use a short sleeve shirt with arm sleeve a lot of the tome because it does not get too cold when I’m running (high 30s/low40s° Fahrenheit). When it is cold and dark I throw on the Smartwool Flash Light jacket for some reflection and protection. I am a warm runner so am always wary of rain jackets and running. Of course today we have lots rain and I was racing a half marathon - so not truly prepared in the jacket category. As a bike commuter I’d love to find a jacket that could work for both running and biking in the rain (my current raincoat is entirely unbreathable). Will look into some of these suggestions. Thanks!
Interestingly, I've bought two new running jackets this year based on "Best ____ Running Jacket" and neither of the brands made TRC's lists; I also didn't come across most of these jackets in my research either. That being said, I'm not surprised the Inov8 jacket could have swept the categories, given what Andy and Sarah had to say about it. It definitely seems to be an excellent jacket.
Got the yellow evadict jacket. It works very well even in a downpour but it’s definitely not breathable. I bought it because I live next to a decathlon store and it is hard to get stuff in my size where I live. For very light rain or windy conditions I have a very light and breathable windbreaker
I almost never run in a jacket, I just find I get hot and sweaty far too quickly. That's okay for short runs in the rain but I know it doesn't work the same if you're up on a mountain in cold and high winds! Also maybe I just haven't tried a properly breathable jacket, so I'd pick the winning Inov8.
I like the look of the Rab Windveil so thanks for pointing this out. You should have tested the Rab Phantom which is my lightweight race waterproof and I think it is superb but not for everyday use as like mayn jackets reviewed, it just isn’t robust enough.
A lot of runners say running in a gore-tex shoe is false economy as if and when the water finds itself in, it can't get out. Applying the same logic to jackets is why I don't run with any waterproofing. I'm going to get wet regardless, whether it's sweat from a sunny day or water from a downpour; I want to be able to wick it away and for that, skin always wins; not gore-tex wins
I bought the proviz reflect 360 men’s explorer and love how lightweight and visible it is at night… innov8 storm shell is over $100 more, makes me wonder if there’s $100 worth of value there as well. Definitely curious after seeing this video.
I absolutely need one. I like the Inov8 Stormshell, even the name fits for this area, then Salomon and The North Face. Lets see which one I can find in shops here.
