The massive lake in Africa is a relic from older builds of a mod when the Mediterranean was partially drained, which was a reference to the real life Atlanropa project that was planned to partially drain the Mediterranean for more land. Part of the Atalantropa project was to dam the Congo River so that there wouldn't be too much water in the oceans. But I'm guessing the only reason why the lake is still in Africa is cuz the dev team simply forgot to remove it when they removed Alantropa from the lore.

So, weird thing with the trade and production units. I personally think its best not to auto-balance it because it automatically sells your resources as well as buying them. So you could have the auto-balance selling a bunch of your resources giving you extra production, but then maybe you start using those productions and have less resources so then they stop selling and it just ends up in a loop.

The lake in the middle of the congo serves the same purpose as widening the suez canal if you get down to advanced basics. I'll do just that in but a moment, but the legitimate lore is that it was dug out a few native species and tribes went extinct because of it and then it became a tourist hotspot. But, as far as I can reckon it was built as an accomplishment by rich men who had nothing else to do, like the pyramids, with a half-buttocked reason barely even related. In my mind, It was made so unemployed people had a job digging up dirt and filling up water, instead of lazing around. It was made so the highest of ups could brag about if for a decade or two until it just became a part of the scenery, to show the lower and middle classes how strong the nation was so that they wouldn't rebel, and to make a few billion a year of the hyper rich. Possibly as an experiment to see how life exists in a saltwater lake surrounded by awkward biomes completely cut off from their natural regions. But thats' probably getting too far into it, if the mod creator was 'smart' enough to actually think it was possible in 20 years with a quarter million men and 50s' machinery to dig a lake bigger than madagascar he wouldn't have brought in that much lore.
