My worst financial mistakes - How I lost $50,000

Over the last 10 years I’ve made some shocking financial decisions! Whether it’s getting a car lease, investing in the sharemarket to try and become a millionaire overnight, not consolidating my superannuation or wasting money on University courses I wasn’t really interested in. I’ll run through them all and show you how it resulted in me wasting about $50,000 of my own money in the last 10 years. I hope the mistakes I’ve made will be useful for you and
Timestamps:
0:00 - Introduction
0:55 - Investing to become a millionaire overnight
2:43 - Enrolling in university units and courses because I was bored
4:23 - Not consolidating my superannuation accounts
5:38 - Getting a car lease, when I already had a car
8:53 - Not having a proper financial plan in my life
First: Investing in the stock market to get rick “overnight”
There are so many examples of me investing in the ASX sharemarket where I thought it would be great to invest in stocks that were under $1 and then expecting them to rocket up 10 or 100 times! This never happened even though I invested in childcare companies, mining companies, satellite companies. I always thought this new stock would be the one. Some of these companies have since been delisted (taken off the stock exchange!). Now I’m more considered and only really invest in ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) from companies like Vanguard or BlackRock or LICs (Listed Investment Companies) such AFIC (Australian Foundation Investment Company).
I’ve also done a video on ETFs if you’re interested. • ETFs in Australia: 4 E...
Second: Spending money on University units and courses that I wasn’t committed to
In Australia for your university or tertiary education, the Australian government will pay for your education upfront as long as you agree to paying them back at some point in the future through your tax dollars. After I completed my undergraduate degree and started working full-time, there were multiple times where I enrolled in units and courses I wasn’t committed to. Some were in the arts, some were in global security and even some were in corporate finance. There was this one unit that I enrolled in 3 times and failed each time. I still don’t know why they let me enrol 3 times.
Third: Having multiple superannuation accounts
Over the last 10 years I had accumulated close to 6 different superannuation accounts. This was because through my university years I did a lot of internships, each of which had its own superannuation company. It’s now very easy to find your superannuation accounts and consolidate them through MyGov and contacting your Superannuation account manager for help.
The ATO has a site for more info: www.ato.gov.au/individuals/su...
Fourth: Getting a car lease, when I already had a car
This was a shocker! I basically bought a brand new car using a car lease…even though I already owned a car. Simply because I wanted a new ute (truck in the US) and thought a car lease would be a great way to fund it. Don’t get me wrong, under certain circumstances car leases can be great. But just not when you already have a car and you want and excuse to get another one. This was by far…my biggest regret financially. It set me back so many years.
Fifth: Generally not having a financial plan
I’m currently in my 30s. A lot of my friends made financial plans when they were in their 18,19s and early 20s. They then diligently followed these through and are now starting to see the fruits of it. At the same time I was wasting time buying new cars and investing in the sharemarket trying to become rich overnight. I’ve smartened up since.
Total loss:
$30,000 + $5,000 + $1,000 +$6,000 = $42,000
Over 5 years at 5% p.a compounded in say the Stockmarket through index funds etc is about $53,000.
The last 10 years of my life were terrible financially. The next 10 years will be better! Please learn from my mistakes.

Sanjee, you are not alone in this journey. You learned from your mistakes and I think we all make mistakes in life be it in finance, relationship or buying something worthless. I also made big financial mistake. I bought a Mazda BT50 2020 in 2018 for $36000, later I spent another $5000 to repair the engine. I spent around $46000 so far on the car and now I can’t sell it there is no one to buy it. I don’t what is going on. I had one buyer and his offer was around $24000 which is almost half the price I bought it initially. That means it cost about $55000 and now I would loss $31000 if someone comes and buy it. This is one of the many examples I share it with you. Now I reflect back and think what had gone wrong ? Why I bought things which I never needed.

Hi Habib, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry to hear about what's going on with your BT50. Yes cars/utes/vehicles are one of the most challenging things to justify spending money on I've realised. I'm a big fan of cars and Utes...but after my experience with purchasing my Navarra brand new...I'm very averse towards buying cars. I agree, I've learnt a lot of lessons along the way. Hope things work out with your ute. All the best.

Hi Sanjee, I enjoyed this video. Thanks for making it. I also have a lot of HECS debt. Mainly because I did 2/3 of a Financial Planning degree that I didn't really need to do. if you do a video on HECS, I would love to view it.

@@SanjeeSen Do you have to deposit an amount of money to trade on a free comsec account before you buy anything or do you pay after you buy any shares with a credit card ? Noob question sorry.
@SanjeeSen
@SanjeeSen 3 года назад
Hi there - I don't think you can buy shares through Credit Cards. It's also a bit risky. You will need to have money in your account before you trade.
@fatwombat2611

@@SanjeeSen Thanks for the reply. I now set up an account and bought some small caps just to get used to using the platform. Made a little profit too but perhaps you can't really call it that until you sell and cash out? Strange how share trading can make you reflect on your own personality traits and tendencies. Ie emotional vs rational decision making.
@SanjeeSen
@SanjeeSen 3 года назад
Yes absolutely (regarding personality traits). I think I've also changed over time. I used to be keen on the individual stocks and keen on getting rich overnight with the sub $1 stocks. I've transitioned to being more longterm with ETFs but still catchup myself looking at those $1 stocks though haha. I've started journaling more about my investing too. I think it'll be interesting to look back in a few years and see if anything has changed.

I’ve also made some terrible financial decisions in the past I’ve learnt from. Main one was buying a brand new car from the dealer paying $45k AUD with a car loan when I got my first Engineering job. This was 10 years ago and I’ve still got the car (Honda Accord) so it’s a big lesson learnt as I didn’t really need a brand new one. Luckily it’s been really reliable and it should last me another 10 years easy but I think about that $45k a lot and what I could’ve had I invested that in Index funds. The other big one is regular weekends out drinking after work. I would just spend $100 a week+ on going out drinking with work friends when I could’ve done it less frequently and still be the same person I am today. It didn’t improve my life socially that much. I still made good friends over the years but given how much I spent, probably not a wise use of money.
@SanjeeSen
@SanjeeSen 3 года назад
Hi Ash, thanks so much for sharing. Yes a new car is a common one I find. But a Honda Accord I'm guessing will have tremendous reliability for another 10 years. I imagine Accords and Corollas will outlast most cars. Have you started investing in index funds?

@@SanjeeSen hi Sanjee. Yep, have invested in ASIA and NDQ. Both of those make up 60% of my portfolio and one LIC which is CSL. I’m hoping to increase ETF allocation by dollar cost averaging whereas CSL is also a long hold given I bought on the dip. Hopefully get more tips from your channel :)
