Hello fellow equestrians! :) Come ride with me and Pumpkin, the spicy chestnut mare! Although she 100% lives up to the stereotype, she is still a sweet heart and a wonderful horse.
All the action is captured on my trusty GoPro, so you can feel like you're right in the saddle with me. So grab your helmet, saddle up, and let's hit the arena together!

Love that u dont blame the horse! Very friendly❤ pumpkim seems like a very honest lessonpony! I noticed she looks alot to the outside when your on a turn especialy in canter, that could also be a reason why she rather would not move forward. You maby can ask your instructor if she could play around with how to bend a horse and steering with your legs and seat. With pions and groundpoles it also becomes a lot more fun for both parties! ❤

Pumpkin has taught me some very valuable lessons ☺️ yes!! I noticed that when I was watching the video back, I wasn’t sure if I had my outside rein too short or if I needed to put more inside leg on her, probably both 😂 that sounds like a fun exercise!! Thank you so much for the tip, I’ll definitely ask my trainer if we can try it 🥰

What works for me when the horse cuts the corners too much, although I’m sure you already know this, is to hold your inside leg on her, and keep it on consistently -ESPECIALLY around those corners- And I noticed that while you were cantering, her head was pointed to the outside. This will usually lead the horse to cutting the corners. I like to fox this by kicking with the outside foot and flexing the reins to the inside a little to give her an idea on what she is supposed to do, because if you do this you are telling her “I want you to look to the inside, not the outside.” But, while you do this she might start heading towards the inside, so it’s important to hold the inside leg on her when she does that. Hope this helps, and Pumpkin is adorable. 💜

when you say kicking are you saying like a tap on her side to get her attention? or..? just wondering, I am learning how to ride a horse and I don't want to do the wrong thing. I might ask my next trainer if I can afford to go pay for more riding lessons.
@Gyattylicious
@Gyattylicious Год назад
You can tap her on her side to get her attention, but if they don’t listen to you you can apply more pressure and hold your leg there, or you can kick a little harder. When I first started riding, I was flailing my leg around, trying to kick, but I was doing it wrong. You have to move your leg back behind the girth and use your heel to kick them. They respond better the harder you kick them, so be sure to kick them hard. If they don’t respond to your kick, use a crop. If they don’t respond to the crop on their shoulder, you can try harder, or you can take it in one hand and smack their flank. Taking it in one hand and smacking them only works with shorter crops, but if you have longer ones just hold it over your leg and smack them. To make it more clear, yes, tap on her side to get her attention. If she ignores you, kick harder. If that doesn’t work, smack her flank. But please keep in mind that horses can be sensitive, so know how sensitive the horse is before you do this. Also asking the trainer would be helpful, because they know much more about their horses than I do. Hope this helps

I really love these videos! I think we are at a very similar level of riding, and I can relate to this lesson a lot. A horse I often ride, Bridget, has the same attitude as Pumpkin does- she can be really slow some days, or really fast some days. But if there is one thing I have to do is stop blaming her. I need to just reflect and adjust my riding like you 😊

I’m so glad you’re enjoying them!! ☺️ yes, exactly! I love Pumpkin but she’s not the easiest horse to ride and I used to be assigned to ride her a lot, I didn’t always like that I would have her but it’s these types of horses that have the most to teach us and will make us a better rider ☺️ I hope your lessons are going well!!! We have so much to look forward to!

The horses' head bobs every other step, and also hollows her back and neck when asked to go at a quicker pace, and she looks almost 150lbs underweight. I'd have to say, in my professional capacity, that horse has soundness issues, potentially lame, even if only temporarily. You should really get that checked out by a vet. Or at the least get a better farrier. Or better yet, board at a less hazardous boarding facility
@amberblyledge7859
@amberblyledge7859 Год назад
I don't agree with underweight, though I do agree with a lameness issue and undermuscled. The unwillingness for forward movement is an issue, especially if she is normally a very forward horse.
@julieoghestene
@julieoghestene Год назад
Remember that the bobs u see in rising trot trough the headcamera, is because of the rider moving up and down. It is not the horse doing this with its head
@amberblyledge7859
@amberblyledge7859 Год назад
@@julieoghestene Yea, it's hard to differentiate that sometimes. But the unwillingness to go seems equally as alarming as any head bobbing.
@AccidentallyOnPurpose
@AccidentallyOnPurpose Год назад
She doesn't appear to be underweight to me, but I do agree she needs more muscle. Headbobbing in nongaited horses is not always a sign of lameness , especially at the trot, some horses just do it naturally, but it can be an indication if paired with other symptoms, and she does appear to be sore somewhere. Especially when I hear she is dragging her feet.

Hi! A little tip: when you were cantering, I could see that Pumpkin was bulging her shoulder to the left, making her canter look a little wonky! One way to fix that is by tightening your left rein and sort of pushing her out to the fence. (be gentle ofc) Also, you can use a left leg yield to try to move her out to the fence so she can be more straight. Great ride btw!

a little tip: when your cantering, make sure your not pulling on your right rein, instead, close your left rain and instead of pulling on your right rein you just open it (I hope u get what I mean). New sub! I’m a beginner adult and I have been riding for about three years but only a year consistently. I have my own horse because I married into a horsey family and he has had soundness issues for the last while….I have to say it seems like pumpkin is uncomfortable. Having a fit well balanced and even horse makes learning to ride so much easier, my horse is very uneven in his canter on one side and I feel like we have been stuck for ages cutting corners and running in the trot in our downward transitions. I get super down on myself that I’m not a better rider, but recently I have cantered a few other horses (because my horse was off after getting maintenance done) and I realized how he’s just a difficult horse to canter. He’s super uphill and bouncy and he lacks strength in his left hind. It’s super easy for his energy to go up instead of forward… all I can say is being an adult it’s super easy to get down on ourselves because we can overthink the journey. I’m envious that you have such an awesome lesson barn and get to ride so many different horses! Your getting a really solid foundation.
@RidewithClara

Are you holding your inside hand on the saddle? I know I definitely did that when I first started cantering, if you are I think it’s why her head is facing outside and she’s not really bending inside. Try to make sure both reins are even and you outside hand is a little closer to the middle of their neck than usual, it will stop you from pulling her out. I live to see people (especially newer riders) not blame the horse when they spook and are a little silly. I love how you have her the reins after her spook so she could calm down and relax.
@RidewithClara
@RidewithClara Год назад
Yes I still have my inside hand on the saddle right now when I canter, I haven’t been given the go ahead just yet! ☺️ I give her a longer rein on that hand, I think it’s much more comfortable for her but yeah I definitely think that’s why she’s super crooked ahaha thaannkk yoouu, Pumpkins is a silly goose sometimes but she’s a wonderful lesson horse 🥰

I noticed you did a lot of clucking and kissing at pumpkin throughout the ride, and I know you said she was being lazy that day, but adding leg and forcing yourself not to cluck is a good way to get stronger in your legs! I get reminded by my trainer a lot that clucking is for people on the ground, not atop the horse. Again, I don’t want to sound rude and I do realize I’m probably a lot younger, just some advice :)
