It's time to get my garden ready to plant. But, why? Because it's that time of year... or because it's what we should do in times like these?

Nice! My Dad actually just called to let me know his buds are out. I'll have it planted by the weekend after Mother's Day 🤠👍

Nice job on setting up the garden fence and tilling. The added ditch silt should help growing the veggies. It's amazing how much food can be grown in a minimal amount of space and your garden is a good size, so expectplenty. Nothing beats the taste of growing your own vegetables. Have a good one Sam!

Sam, You Did a Beautiful job putting up the fence and gate. However, what I really like is Sam using scrap to get things done, and by that, I mean some used lumber and nitrogen-rich soil from the ditch. Good luck with the garden. I am looking forward to you tilling the compost into the existing soil.

Thank you for the encouraging words!!! I love repurposed materials. Saves money and diminishes waste. I'm looking forward to tilling that soil too!!! 🤠👍

Great idea. Good luck keeping the varmints out. More like a hedge against inflation garden - have you been to the grocery store lately? Let's hope its literally not a WW3 garden. I have a feeling the next one won't end well.

Glad to hear that you are using the creek soil. Let's hope it's just a garden. Great movie references.

Looking good Sam 👍👍 If you have kids, its fun the throw some pumpkin seeds somewhere about mid may, early june. Doesn't have to be in the fenced garden area.

Great idea! I took last Halloween's pumpkins and tilled them into the ground. Wonder if they'll sprout? 🤠👍

Nice job Sam! Really liked the use of the stump bucket. I may have to put it on my bucket list! No pun intended.

Thank you! It really is handy when you need it. It sits more often than it's on the tractor, but I'm glad it's there when I need it 🤠👍

I like the buried plastic fence idea. Looks a lot less expensive than chicken wire, which is the direction I was headed. Now all I need is the stump Good luck!

Thank you! The plastic fence was a bit more expensive but I figured it would last much longer 🤠👍

Sam, I am a new subscriber. Enjoying the channel and I have been on a similar journey to you on my small farm. Tried and failed at a lot of stuff, but failure is a great teacher. Great idea about your garden. My only comment would be your proposed use of herbicides and weed killer. There will be a high probability that is will get into your food. I know they are meant to be safe, but some of the latest research suggests not. We use cardboard and black plastics to keep weeds at bay. Good luck with your endeavours and I will keep watching.

Thank you so much! And welcome to the channel!! I will only spray along the fence line and that's over 6 feet away from the garden. Maybe I'll switch to white vinegar an soap for that purpose 🤔 Thanks again 🤠👍

Looks great! I am assuming (& you know what they say about that word) that with all the work you put in that fence, that this is more or less permanent garden, for years to come. So if you take the cost of the fence and divide by say, 10 years, that may not = to much per year. Your 'silt' may be good, I don't know if you are planning on fertilizer? Seeds aren't too expensive, although a quantity of sweet corn purchased from a seed company isn't cheap. And plants, they can add up. I'm thinking this isn't exactly 'free' food! I've had some onions, radishes and red beets in the ground about 2 weeks. Yesterday I planted some sweet corn, kolorabi, cauliflower, broccoli. I didn't get to the cabbage, peppers and tomatoes before the rain. I also have 5 kinds of squash to plant. I planted seeds for all of these plants in my mini greenhouse. Yep another expense! But I figure over a couple of years, it will pay for itself, considering the cost of plants! Best of luck!

Thank you!!! Yes, it's really not "free" food, but like you said, it'll pay for itself. The fence is permanent. My costs added up to about $500. My Dad just called this morning and said his hickory tree budded out, so seeds will be in soon. I can expand it out to the full size of the area if need be but for now, I'm starting simple 🤠👍

You had me up to the point of “just spray it”. 😞 We are supposed to take care of the ground we work. Not poison it. Unless you are using vinegar and soap. 😊
@samsdoinstuff
@samsdoinstuff 3 месяца назад
I agree. But, I'm pretty sure the farmers surrounding us use Glyphosate. I am considering the vinegar and soap because it's so close to the food. It doesn't last as long but it sure is safer 🤠👍

A lot of food can be grown in a small area. If starting out with herbs you do not need much area to be self sufficient. You can’t survive off herbs but fresh herbs helps improve meals cooked at home.
