Dear O,M,L,W,P & S,
This post is about my personal WWII era, M1 Carbine. It is not a comprehensive firearm review, however, I talk about the firearm and fire several rounds. The majority of videos I post on the Squirrel Ranch channel are for the six of you. Like nearly everyone else, when I'm gone, most of my stories will be gone with me. I want to recap and post some of my outdoor experiences so you rapscallions can, if you choose, one day share them with their children and so on. How cool would that be!
Love,
Papa
P.S. This carbine goes to your Dad/Uncle Tyler. I asked him a while back which of my firearms he would like to have some day and he responded, "Your M1 Carbine, because I remember taking it out and shooting it with you when I was a kid."

I have one from the DCM. Took it apart and cleaned the stock in our dishwasher. Then rubbed linseed oil into it. Bought a new barrel from the DCM and had it installed. Had a new rear sight installed. DCM sells ammo for it.

I enjoyed your video about the M1 carbine. I realize that many “gun people “ are hung up on data points and technical information that really isn’t relevant to putting lead on target. I’ve seen people at the range with super high end firearms who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn! They are most likely the group that has no military experience. You presented valuable information that would help someone with information about purchasing a carbine. I thought your disclaimer was fair but your presentation was just fine. I was glad to see you wearing eye protection. I always needed glasses and they did protect my eyes during my deployment. Thanks for sharing your video!

Dave, sorry it took me so long to respond. Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment on this video. Your input was thoughtful and meaningful. Much appreciated!

I love reading comments by clowns like you that think the military somehow makes you a better shot.. makes you somehow feel better about yourself because it’s all you got. I was in the military (I never say served) but It’s not a big defining part of who I am. Some people need to feel like they’re part of a team. Bunch of followers.😂

Just inherited my dad’s. Havn’t fired yet, fantastic feel to the weapon. Just feels “right”

Very cool, @number6705. Inheriting a firearm from a family member or someone you know/knew well, makes the gun that much more special.

I’ve got a few myself and love them all . Finding ammo at a reasonable price is the big issue . Wish palmetto state armory would start producing some in their AAC ammo line .

They are truly fun to shoot, Darrell. Thanks for watching and sounds like we'll both be on the lookout for some .30 ammo at a respectable price. Much appreciated.

Its usually the mag anything but the 15 round is delicate . Try loading 20 or 28 in the 30 round

Great rifle and another great video. We don’t need no stinking rear sight no how. That was some great shooting. Love the .30 carbine. In the early 70’s used to be able to find surplus Ammo just about anywhere, cheap. Getting a little harder to find any Ammo these days. Thanks for the great video.

That's right Nicodemus...rear sites are overrated! I'm going to look around and see if maybe someone has a stockpile of .30 cal...you never know. I'm also considering a new model .30 cal. I actually like the M1 and M14 style better than the AR15. Thanks for watching my friend and lets do some fishing sooner than later.

Just got hold of an M1 General Motors Inland Division one. Pondering on if I should refurb stock. My stock is alot darker then yours.

@reallyridiculous1 9 месяцев назад
Excellent on that, Skilpadjie1! I'm not an expert on the M1 but if you have good reason to believe your gun and stock are original (as issued), refinishing the stock could bring down the value of your carbine from what I understand. If you're planning on keeping it long term and just want it to look better for your own use, then you might not be as concerned with the value. One thing to consider: if your carbine has the "double cannon" insignia stamped on the stock, you might want to be careful when sanding/refinishing it so you don't sand off the insignia. That would definitely affect your carbine's value. Congratulations on recently acquiring a piece of US military history. And thanks for sharing with me and other Squirrel Ranch viewers about your new M1!

@@reallyridiculous1 Interesting on my M1 is that when opening in front of hammer spring is little plunger with spring which upon googling is then actually the M2 version. Also when I look forward on the stock by action. There is a little space where the selector switch would be able to come out. So if I am able to get hold of the Selector plate and switch I should be able to fit them and get the M1 in to M2 Auto setup.

@@Skilpadjie1 That's cool that you're just a couple parts away from having yourM1/M2 up and running. Thanks for watching and for sharing about your M1 carbine experience. I sincerely appreciate that.

Get you a rear sight for that thing.Numrich has them. Drifts in from right to left as you are aiming it. Mags are the weak link with the carbine. the 5 round sounds like the feed lips need to be narrowed a little. Keep checking with CMP they just acquired some carbine ammo

Recently acquired a pristine Winchester M1 carbine from a private collection and adore it.
@reallyridiculous1

Excellent on that! Sounds like you found a good one. If I were going to get another one from the WWII era I'd probably look for a Winchester as well. Even though they were all made from the exact same specifications, an M1 made by Winchester back when Winchester was still Winchester, would be a special firearm. Thanks for watching, hoffmiermp, and for sharing about your new M1: enjoy your personal piece of American military firearm history!

I have a summer 1944 Inland I got from my dad's collection a couple of years ago. It came with 4 GI 30-round magazines that were in rough shape. Two were tapped together wrong I have no idea how long ago. Could not seat either in the well. I tool them apart and the sticky from the electrical tape was still on the outside. I am slowly replacing all with KCI new 15 and 30-round magazines. Going to replace the springs with a set from Wolf as that as well as lubrication is supposed to take care of any issues from the gun.

They are great weapons and fun to shoot. It looks like yours has an early model bolt (machined top and not round like the later models) and no bayonet style barrel band, cool.

It should work fine without any problems. Try an original 15 round WW2 magazine.I would also put in a new extractor spring

You have a nice Inland carbine, but it has a Korean War pot belly stock, they were put on the carbines for the M2 full auto carbines to strengthen the stock. Replacement stocks are unobtainium, correct IO or HI stocks are very hard to find for your carbine. After 200 rounds the carbines start to do funny things, the tappets get so carboned up that they hardly move, and then there's the johnson valve, why did they put that in there. Well happy shooting until you run out of bullets because they are also unobtainium.

Magazine, not the gun. Most 5 rounders a M1 Carbine, M1a probably the AR's too. Milsurps were made for 'their' mags. M14 20's, AR's 20 or 30's, and the Little sister 15's and 30's...

Have an Auto Ordinance replica and it functions great... the ammo (if you can find it) is very expensive...so I reload my own...
@reallyridiculous1

Good to know regarding your Auto Ordinance carbine. I've experienced the same thing with .30 caliber ammo: not easy to find and it's expensive...expensive compared to .223, 9mm etc. No doubt the price of .30 has to do lack of demand. Although it sounds like there might be a growing number of firearm enthusiast who have discovered how fun it is to shoot .30 cal ammo out of a fairly light weight carbine.
@reallyridiculous1
@reallyridiculous1 6 месяцев назад
TBcoach, I've given thought a few times to taking up reloading. I've heard it's not alway economical (no doubt depends on the caliber, equipment cost, raw material cost, how much ammo you reload and so on). In your case have you found it saves money or is it more of a hobby or some of both? Just curious. (no doubt one of the advantages of reloading is the ability to achieve better ballistics performance/consistency etc than factory ammo.)
