Thank you, thank you, thank you for talking about feeding Molly a non-vegan diet as a vegan yourself. It breaks my heart seeing non-qualified people recommending it.

the intro was EVERYTHING I loved it! The whole first part was so important. Animals are not toys and shouldn't be treated as such. Also all the animals I had through my life were rescued or found and they are as cute and lovely as pure breeds

Two things I don’t think we should judge ourselves on, what we feed our pets and necessary medication (even if it’s in gelatine capsules)

as a poop bag solution: i started folding my own bags out of old newspapers. i while ago i found a tutorial for folded bags for the compost bin and i just use the same technique but in small for the poop bags and just use them like "regular" bags: pick up and turn inside out :)

The city of Prague had a great solution for free for everyone - paper bags with a carton inside that could be folded slightly as a spoon-ish shape and would be very easy to use. If I remember correctly from the time I lived there Prague was the city in Europe with the most dogs per people or something like that, but they found a solution to try to keep the city clean - eco dog poop bags everywhere!

I've been having a terrible month (lost my grandpa to covid, contracted covid, recovered and then again am sick now with god-knows-what) and this intro made me smile so widely for the first time in this month. My heart is full. Thank you so much, Molly ❤️ (Also thanks G, I watch your videos on repeat and this may not be the traditional content to help folks cope, but your wit, genuineness, warmth and just your entire energy is so incredibly beautiful. Appreciate it a lot. You feel like a friend, if that makes sense)

I am happy to hear that your dog is not vegan. Cats and dogs are obligate carnivores so they must be fed meat. Another thing I think we should keep in mind is that cats are responsible for significant decline of birds, just because it's their nature and there's so many of them. I think it is responsible for cat owners to somehow manage this impact too.

You can made toys for pets from the old clothes of yours! Just made sure the fabrics don’t contain any harmful elements (like buttons, etc) and no dyes that are harmful for animals were used in the production.

High school sewing teacher here from 🇨🇦… if a person has basic sewing skills, one can sew some really simple and fun pet toys from scraps and natural fibres. Students in my classes love to make cat and dog toys for their furry friends. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🐶🐱. PS - Expose yourself away Gittemary, and no need to apologize for anything… you do you, and we love you and Molly all the way!! (And Jens too 😃)

Amazing! I already left a comment saying this but if you have sewing small scraps you can twist or braid them into scrap fabric twine/rope. That makes an awesome toy for doggies when braided and knotted thickly and for cats when other things like found and washed feathers, pompoms, etc are added to ends and bits

My favorite homemade dog treats are frozen carrot chunks (especially good for young puppies who are teething but my pup just never grew out of loving them). The other homemade treat recipe I make regularly are just slightly overripe banana, a hefty scoop of peanut butter, and enough oats/oat flour to make it stick together, then you shape it into little balls and they store for months in the freezer or a couple weeks in the fridge.

15:32 This reminded me of a time when I tried to look for shoes without leather and my mom pointed out that if we eat meat we should also be using animal products so we can use every part of the animal. The linkage between what we buy and diets definently gives me something to think about when shopping!
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 3 года назад
while this is sometimes true, do bear in mind that actual “leather cattle” is not that incommon, this type of cattle is bred for the primary purpose of leather production 😟

That one is tricky, because it depends where you live. But generally speaking, the animal industry only cares about money, nothing else, so it would be bad business to kill an animal for its skin and throw the rest away, because there is a market for literally every part of the animal, they would be throwing away money; so in the majority of cases, absolutely every part of the animal is used and consumed

Amazing video! I have two dogs and one of them has severe dietary allergic issues so we have to buy veterinarian approved food that only come in small bags... We do what we can. For dog poop, we asked family members that buy bread in bags to save them and we use those. Not ideal but at least those bags get one more use.

Hi guys, I never see anything that has to do with caring for small animals/ reptiles so here are mine:D -GET YOUR CAGE/ TERRARIUM SECOND HAND there are so many awesome cages online:) -if you have rodents try to switch to a bioactive setup, no more bedding-> no more waste - make toys and gadgets yourself like rat or hamster hammocks from thrifted fabric, branches from outside and many more - for some animals you can make the food yourself in bulk for example for rats (it's called the shunnamite diet) -for many animals you can breed feeder animals like mealworms, roaches ect. yourself:) You can get chew toys for rabbits or other small pets from old corks and wood from outside:) Hope it helped:))

Here are my tips 😊: - POOP : If you have a small dog like I do, you can use all sort of daily "trash" to pick up their poop: mail in ads, newspaper, napkins (used or clean) from takeout, your FRIEND'S napkins from takeout, or your FRIEND's/family newspaper (ask to keep them aside for you), wrappings, paper bags, shipping material, plastic bags if you find yourself stuck with any etc. You'll be surprised how much trash you can turn into poop bags once you start paying attention! We have been doing this for over a year now, and it's been working out so well! We haven't bought poop bags this whole time. Also, to add to the subject of scooping poop and throwing it in the toilet, you should really check in with your city and ask if that's ok, because many places don't have infrastructure enough to be able to filter the bad bacteria from animal stools, even dogs. Finally, you CAN compost pet's poop, HOWEVER you should not be using that compost for any edible plant, so you may want to have two compost piles. Regarding the city compost, ask your city, most won't take pet waste unfortunately. - TREATS: For the DIY :) I've been making diy treats for my dog for a WHILE now, and it's so much cheaper, healthier for your dog, and certainly can be a lot more waste free. I personally use a silicone mat, that has about 500 small half-sphere cavities, and it's oven safe. This way all I need to do is throw the ingredients in the blender or food processor, make a batter, pour on the mold, bake, shake the mold, and I have 500 treats made in one go...voilàt! Very good resources for this are a FB group called "Pyramid Dog Treats", where you can find recipes and all sort of info and advice, and also, specifically for Germany, the company Collory ( collorystore.de/collections/all ) which sells high quality silicon mats that are oven safe, and have a bunch of fun shapes too. - FOOD: I feed my dog a raw diet, which you could DIY but I prefer buying premade, which unfortunately comes in plastic. I know that Europe is jumping onto the wagon of the BARF diet, so it may be worth looking around online, locally, and see if anyone is making a prepared BARF diet. When I was in Italy visiting family, I found a small business in my hometown that would make the mix for me, on request, with the proteins I asked (in my case I asked for rabbit), and it came in paper like from the butcher, but I am sure if I had wanted I could have possibly brought my own container. I personally don't believe in kibbles...it's like the junk food for dogs, extra processed food, given daily. No wonder so many dogs have allergies, digestive issues, tumors and so on. But to each his own, raw isn't cheap, so I also understand that everyone does what they can! - FLEAS & TICKS: I personally am very against traditional fleas and ticks meds. It's basically like feeding your dog pesticide or putting it on his skin. No wonder I lost a cat from cancer that started exactly where the flea medication drops go, behind the neck. For my dog, I've been using garlic internally (I know, I know, very controversial issue, but BELIEVE ME, garlic is beneficial if given in moderation, the studies that were done around it that showed toxicity, used HUGE amounts of garlic, amounts that I would never eat in a day myself. Here is the study for who is interested: avmajournals.avma.org/doi/abs/10.2460/ajvr.2000.61.1446 and here is a more understandable article from a very good magazine I follow, for who likes it simple 😅 www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/garlic-for-dogs-poison-or-medicine/ ), we use Bug Off Garlic by Springtime Supplements, but the same results could be achieved by feeding little amounts of raw garlic daily. See the article from dog naturally magazine Iinked above for the dosage. During flea season, we also use organic Neem oil topically (mind, this is NOT and essential oil, but it's something like this, that it's ok to put directly on your skin www.amazon.com/Kate-Certified-Organic-Moisturizer-Guarantee/dp/B074HMX85T/ref=asc_df_B074HMX85T/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312149177941&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15069073682091943178&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9061081&hvtargid=pla-573491829092&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=65836846681&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312149177941&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15069073682091943178&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9061081&hvtargid=pla-573491829092 ) Neem oil is a very good bug repellant, and so is calming for skin irritations; I just put 2/3 drops on my hands and massage it into my dog's coat, allover - you can use it too 😉 He doesn't mind. The smell isn't the best, but that's kind of the point. Another company that makes natural flea/ticks products is Wondercide. They have remedies in case your dog already is infested or a topical spray, which uses Cedarwood essential oil as the main ingredient, so I suppose it could be somewhat easily re-created as a DIY. - TOYS: I just wanted to point out this awesome company, called West Paw: they make their toys with this specific rubber they have designed, they're very good quality and sturdy. If and when a toy breaks, you can send it to the company which will break it down into the material pellets and make new toys with it, so it's a closed cycle. You'll also get a new free replacement the first time this happens. Happy to share more if anyone has questions, I've been nerding out on the dog subject for quite a while at this point 😅

When our dog was experiencing his final week or so, we talked to our vet on what we could serve him that was from scratch. Our vet gave us a recommendation of rotisserie chicken.. we used used the bones to make into a broth, with brown rice, half of unsweetened canned pumpkin puree (not to be confused with canned pumpkin-pie). I remember he seemed to like it.

Loved this video! My favorite! I’m a little biased I’m a veterinary technician, haha. I loved Molly’s intro and I’m also so happy to hear she is not vegan. I think there’s a place for vegan diets and dogs, but I absolutely agree that they shouldn’t be fed without the knowledge behind them. And the note about cats…YAS! Soo many sick cats because they’re owners have forced a vegan diet on them 😫😫 Lovely video! 🙌

My friends gifted me a puppy for my birthday. They knew I wanted a dog, they talked with my family and they say yes, so.. the surprised me with a puppy. Please please please don't do that. I love my baby with all of my heart, but it was so hard at the start. I wasn't prepared, not mentally, not physically, I didn't have anything for him (food, bed, poop bags). A pet shouldn't be a gift, no matter how much the person wants one. It took me completely by surprise and I had to change my whole lifestyle to take care of him, which affected a lot my mental health

Love your channel and especially doing this video on Molly! We supplement our dog's food w clearance meats and veggies. Also, to supplement her calcium intake we save egg shells and make them into powder in a coffee grinder (now that is zero waste 👍). Thank you for sharing this and being honest! I am very much the same as you. Doing my best in each regard, and I don't feel 100% great on the food I get my dog but I don't know enough about feeding him a healthy vegan diet so I also just steer clear of lamb and beef. Good on you for taking such great care of Molly, she looks adorable! Being sustainable and or being vegan boils down to wanting a better planet for all living beings on it. If you're neglecting the needs of your pet in order to be fully vegan, that sounds like defying the purpose.

I'm so glad you mentioned rabbits first...in terms of getting pets in the first place, also very important topic 😬. My rabbit is almost 7 years old and I really wish I could menage it more sustainably, but it's hard in those countries that don't offer any options, when it comes to food. And the poop is also an issue...😕 Anyway, I always find your tips and tricks very useful, now you are one of my favourite zero waste people!! 😃 Also, the intro was very amusing!! ❤️❤️

Loved this video! Once we get through our current pack of poop bags I plan to get compostable. Here in our winter we can't take our puppers for walks as it is too cold so she goes in the backyard and then we save on bags by picking up multiple piles. A good way to go sustainable with your cats are things like using a more sustainable litter (we use wood pellets. But there are other options out there) grow your own catnip and cat grass and repair theirs toys/use household items as toys

I think that might be the case in areas where there’s not a lot of dogs. Where I live however, within a month of people doing that, all meadows would’ve been dug up and all the grass would be messed up.

loved the intro such a cutie! I have a dog and she's been on a vegan diet (Vdog) for 3 years, she is healthy and I speak with my vet. She gets some commercial vegan treats but most prefer home made. That being said my pets going forward will be rescue herbivories. My biggest tip would be to shop 2nd hand, everything a dog needs has already been made. Only new things we buy is shampoo (bar) , her dog tags/microchipping - which is Buy once for life or has a lifetime warranty- and kibble/treats.

Finally, Molls in the spot light! Gotta say your hooman used to be my fav. RU-vidr but now it is 100% you girl!! I see fluffy doggo and I am hooked. Also dogs shouldn't eat nightshade veggies (tomatoe, potatoes, paprika, obregines) I have something to add- when adopting from the shelter you should also know that the dog you choose can also have health problems. You have to be prepared to pay for vets. I always adopt fully grown dogs, cause they are usually left there cause ppl want "cute puppies" and sometimes no one will adopt and animal that has something wrong with them. If you are not ready to take on such responsability don't do it just to "save a dog". I saw ppl returning pets for beig sick. My good girl who passed a year ago was a dachsie mix and she had MANY problems with her spine and legs due to daschunds being breed to have such short legs (as G. Also mentioned in this video). I knew she was going to have problems and it was very expensive to keep her mobile. Still she made it to 9 years and had a good quality life. Also, don't prolong the life of an animal that is clearly in pain. If there is nothing that can be done take them to the vet to be put to sleep and BE WITH THEM in those last moments. It broke my heart when a vet told me they get animals dropped there to be euthanised and the owners just leave. Sorry for a long post, I am very passionate about this

❤️🐕 Good to remember that some studies came out mentioning that pea/lentil/potato based dog foods can cause issues long term, Im sure unnatural vegan mentioned that in one of her videos on the topic. Many vets are fine with vegan dogs as they are omnivores as long as they have an appropriately planned diet :)

THANK YOU for talking about 1) not getting carnivore pets if you don't agree with their diet, 2) not trying to make Molly vegan (my dog is also a Molly 😁), 3) being upfront about not getting pets that don't fit your lifestyle. Dogs need around 22-30% protein and cats 30+% in their diet, depending on things like age and activity, and should not eat grains like corn, wheat, and soy. Those are also 3 of the crops with the highest pesticide and GMO usage. My dog and cat eat grain free kibbles that source most of the ingredients from the US, and it's topped with a mostly organic wet food. I won't make their food, partially because of nutrition/nutrients, but also because that would involve me buying said ingredients. I'd rather the dog/cat food companies use their sourcing, and like you said, is frequently leftovers and can source better-raised meats for far cheaper than I can. I try to get their accessories used when possible, but I get things like metal bowls for them because they're more durable. I'll also add that as a big-ish dog owner, you really want items that are much more durable 😂 I like to think of as that being sustainable is part of my ethics, not my pets'. And part of my ethics is taking care of them in the way that is best for their health, not someone else's (who is not a vet) ideals.

hi. I don't have zero waste options for my dog just because most dog products contain SUGAR and wheat and stuff that dogs shouldn't ingest like glycerine.... So I just try to feed him the best possible foods even though the're not sustainable. An advise I would give to everyone who has a dog is to make sure their food and treats don't have sugar, soy and wheat and to pay close attention to their toothpaste because most toothpastes are really really bad. Great video. Thank you. :)

So I don't have a dog but I have friends and family who do. I make fabric rope/twine from fabric scraps that I cant use (I sew and craft) and braid and knot it into rope toys for their dogs as gifts. It is a way to not waste those small scraps and put them to good use as well as a great gift for the doggies, I am often told it is a favorite. I recently did the same for CATS but instead of a thick, braided rope I did one braided thinner twine and attached found feathers to parts of it. This is now my dad's cat's favorite toy. REUSE!!!!!!

My dog has a hypoallergenic diet based on rabbit meat and organic vegetables, as well as supplements prescribed by his vet. I manage to buy almost everything without plastic and with a lower impact than the kibbles available at pet stores. However, I have a lot of work making the meals. Nevertheless, I think it is worth it. This diet changed his life. He is 14 and managed to go through 10 chemotherapy sessions 2 years ago without too much damage due to his highly balanced diet.

Great video! I was very relieved to hear that your dog is not vegan. I do not believe we should force animals whose natural instinct is to eat meat, to be vegan. As humans, we are able to make better choices for ourselves and the planet, but being good stewards of our pets means providing humanely for them. I once met a vegan cat and I found the idea very troubling. Cats have tremendous protein requirements which veganism cannot properly satisfy.
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 3 года назад
To my knowledge it is not actually a protein issue in terms of veganism and cats specifically, you can easily get enough protein, however there are some vitamins that cats need to get from meat
@DRT813

I agree, super relieved. It just doesn't seem natural at all to feed a dog or especially a cat vegan food and contrary to humans they can't make that choice for themselves. I totally understand if someone wants to live in a fully vegan household, but then they should get animals that are herbivores instead (e.g. rabbits are amazing pets and smaller animals like them or guinea pigs often get overlooked in rescue places).

I bought a used dehydrater recently to make dog treats for my two pups and it is awesome! Just cut up some meat or fruit or veggies, stick them in their for the proper amount of time (heads up, it's super long usually like 8-12 hours to fully dehydrate) and they are good to go!

I use compressed pine pellets for my cat's litter tray. It works really well in a sieve-style litter tray. It can be composted in a separate compost bin so it goes on ornamental plants, not veggies.

THE cutest intro! Do thank Molly for gracing us with her presence ! I absolutely relate to what you're saying about the icky feeling of buying meat products for your dog. But at the same time, i am the one who chose to get a dog, knowing full well that this would be part of the package. And i have learned to live with it - all though i can not deal with the dried chicken feet, pigs ears ect in my house - it just freaks me out! i fully appreciate that this means that no parts of the animal goes to waste - but i just cannot stand to look at it... i will leave those treats for other dog owners.

I don't want to start a fire here but I think it is important to talk about this: CAT owners, we MUST spend some time playing with our cats. ESPECIALLY outdoor cats. They kill so much wildlife, which in itself is not sustainable. so PLEASE let's spend some time with our cats playing with them and defusing some of their hunting energy. It helps massively if it happens before feeding them.

Love this video (v cute intro ♥️)… also I’ve been vegan for 5+ years and have had 2 dogs for 3 of those years. While I give my dogs lots of veggies and fruits, I would never force my dogs to be 100% vegan. They are not meant to be herbivores and it’s not fair for us to force our ethical values on other beings that can’t necessarily express their say. So don’t feel bad for taking care of the pups. Who the hell are we to decide not to feed our pets the food they need to survive for the sake of issues that are entirely humans’ faults (i.e., domestication and animal agriculture)

Love this video and all your tips and tricks! I just recently found your channel and Im loving it! In addition to the poop-section of the video; I have a corgi (pretty small dog, about 10kg) and I find most poopbags too big, so I usually dont tie them shut as my dog poops more than once, and then use the same poopbag the entire walk before throwing it. Please consider another harness for cutie Molly, the model with the straight strap in the front is damaging their shoulders and movement. An Y-type of harness is healthier for the dog. :)

I loved the video! I also have a dog wich I adopted from the shelter and 6 rescue cats also a bird. I buy dog and cat food in very large amounts in a single packaging just like you do and to hear that it is the best alternetive makes me relieved. I feed my bird seeds, vegatable chop (home made) and fresh sprouts (also home made) and I diy some foraging toys for her from paper. She also has toys made from wood and plant fibers. For my cats i made a toy using a wooden stick, yarn and old packaging ribbon. They love to play with it. And lastly for my dog, i made some toys from thick ropes and tennis ball. If I have a paper box from something I bought, instead of tossing it, I put some dog treats in it and give it to my dog. He loves to shread the box and find the treats. (Of course I collect the shredded pieces later)

Another bit that I want to add is medicine for pets! Like humans, our pets can’t skip their meds! If you want a lower waste option as your vet if there are shot alternatives. For my dog, he gets a heartworm and lymes disease vaccines. This definitely helps to cut down on plastic packaging from those heartworm meds and from medical plastic in general as we are helping to preventing these diseases. I haven’t found a low waste flea and tick option that works for us but I am always on the look out.

Thanks for this video! I'm curious about why not to flush cat's poop down the toilet... I have always use a cat litter that is made from wood pulp and they instructions say to flush in the toilet... I've prepared my cat's food under the vet supervision, she was underweight and diagnosed with leukaemia when I adopted her, so she needed a lot of nutrients... it had chicken meat, heart and liver that I was getting at the market in my won container, plus some vegetables, rice, oats, spirulina and red lentils, she ate this meals for about three months and then I slowly introduced some dried food... I would have continued because I could see how much she loved it, but for me it was quite horrible to handle the meat and she is healthy eating her current food, which is organic, is from Yarrah.

My little good deed in this world is that I have saved 5 horses from the slaughterhouse. 3 are still alive today on good homes but 2 euthanized because of other issues. 2 year old mare i bought and "saved" i just had to put her asleep 2 days ago because she got injured, in honour of her I am going to save another horse. I am curious. Would you think my "horse saving" is a bad thing because i give a little money to the owners to breed more horses or would it be a good thing because those lifes at least get good lives ?

Loved the video! Regarding vegan diet for dogs, many dogs are prescribed specific vegan dog food brands due to allergies (including my dog) and as long as your vet is knowledgeable on the topic and agrees dogs been vegan (with appropriate dog food as staple) is not such a big deal as they are omnivores, while cats are carnivores. Also wanted to mention about this study of new information regarding how pea, potato and lentil based dog foods can be harmful for dogs long term (thought i should mention as your adorable pup seems to have a heavy lentil based food as staple. HIGHLY suggest you watch Unnatural Vegan's videoS on vegan pet/dog food and vegan pets.

I agree, unfortunately legumes have been showing to block taurine absorption, which can cause some bad heart consequences 🙁 that's also why a lot of diets that are "grain free" are now getting a bad reputation, but the reason is because the grains were substituted with other fillers, such as starchy vegetables (potatoes etc. - which can cause digestive issues if consumed in big amounts, and also, will get your dog's teeth nice an dirty, just as a bag of chips will do the same to our teeth) And legumes, which caused the taurine issue I mentioned above. So the lack of grain isn't the issue there.

I think the point where the debate on whether dogs can or should be vegan is in the fact that they are omnivores, technically they weren’t supposed to be, like other canines, they are carnivorous; but because of the fact that they started to evolve and adapt according to our lifestyle, their bodies adapted to some vegetarian food options. That’s the thing, the difference between if their bodies can now tolerate vegetarian food but they are still carnivorous or being omnivorous, like us, being able to survive on both or just one.

15:18 As far as I understand buying slaughterhouse waste or dog food would in fact still lead to more animals being killed. Let me explain: It is always the case that the animal is already dead when we buy meat and cannot be harmed since it is already dead. But the money we pay for it leads to an increase in demand which will on a statistical level lead to more animals being killed in the future. Buying slaughterhouse waste leads to a bigger profit margin for the farmer. This increase in profit margin means that he can decrease the price for his meat while still making a profit. The reduction in price of meat will then lead to a higher demand for meat. So, in the long run both buying meat and buying slaughterhouse waste will lead to an increase in demand which will lead to more animals being killed. You could argue though that the increase in demand is proportional to the price of the product and therefore much bigger for meat than for slaughterhouse waste. To which I would agree. But it still means that buying dog food will lead to quite a lot of suffering and death of other animals.
