Thanks for sharing your tips. Laundry is one of my biggest problems. I haven't found any alternative that works for me in terms of money, results or time consumption if it is DIY. But I'm still looking each time I find a new shop or video :)

I´m washing my laundry with soapnuts for years now. The laundry smells great and no detergent needed. I use it only sometimes for "special ocasion" clothes, when I want them to smell extra nice . Terra Verde and Feel ECO are my go to brands :) and air drying the laudry is the best.

I love the Tru Earth laundry sheets! I've bought them directly from the supplier and had no issue, but they are regional to me so perhaps that's why. People need to know that in my experience, the Canadian standard for shipping is a lot slower than many other countries.

I use Dropps laundry pods, which may be a US-only brand, but I really like them! They work well and come shipped in cardboard. We use their dishwasher pods too! Thank you for showing the microplastic in the Guppy Bag, I've seen it before but wasn't sure where the microplastics went or if they were ever visible since they're so small!

I've been making my own laundry detergent with a recipe from the website Smarticular, they have loads of tips on how to make your own cleaners. I'd like to know if Jens follows the same routine as you now that you live together. My partner who is not aaaas conscious as me worries a bit that I will not be able to accept that he does certain things in different ways than me, if we'd ever live together. I figure that I'd probably buy all the products or make them myself then as well, or do the shopping because I love refilling my food in zero waste shops and buy veggies unwrapped wherever possible. He grabs what is in his sight and then doesn't mind buy for instance potatoes or apples in a plastic bag. He suggests to "let go and relax" sometimes.

I also started on the soapnut bandwagon when I started out zero waste/low waste but found that they made my clothes smell funky or vinegary. I found a USA based company Booda Organics and tried their powdered detergent. I will not be switching to anything else though I would be considering TruEarth as another option. Booda Organics products all work so awesome. I wear my clothes more than just one time and that alone has cut down my laundry down to 1 load over 2 weeks. granted its winter and I don't sweat as much but I've never been one of those people who wear something for half a day and switch out. For fabric softeners I use apple cider vineger in the rinse cycle. this also helps with hard water issues. I do have a box of unscented, no dye fabric softener sheets that I use once a month to work my way through or if I forget my ACV at home since I have to do my laundry at a laundrymat. I love my wool balls for the dryer and I do NOT use any essential oils on them or in the dryer. I have been warned multiple times by laundry mat owners that due to the heat of the commercial dryers it can and has caused fires. thank you for your video and suggestions. Also I would get a hold of Shelbizleee on YT. She might be able to send you a attachable microfilter from the USA. She got one of her washer and it works a treat.

lots of great tips here! i find that washing my clothes at colder temperatures like 30C works just fine. and i usually pick the shortest cycles and lowest spinning modes to lower the water and energy consumption of doing laundry
@alcurtis93
@alcurtis93 10 месяцев назад
Shortest cycle plus lowest spin speed is actually the worst thing you could do. Higher spin speed = more water removed so less energy consumed in a dryer (if you use one), quickest laundry settings are usually very energy intensive to try and do a big job in a short amount of time. That's why the eco cycles are long to get good results by washing the same water round repeatedly to give the detergent time to work and to agitate the fibres

The ultimate zero waste laundry routine is to run the clothing thru the wash cycle with no soap & line dry. I got this from a woman in the UK who swore that I didn't need soap. She pretreats any stain & never uses soap. I have done this and it does work, but I do like a little soap, so now I use maybe a tablespoon...if I use any at all. I like the stain remover bar. I checked Etsy and they have quite a few. I will purchase in the future when I finish up what I have.

I buy my Tru Earth sheets from Amazon. I realize it's not a very sustainable company, but I have never had an issue with when and how I received my merchandise. For fabric softener I grew up with my frugal mom using vinegar in a small ball thing that opens during the spin cycle releasing the vinegar, I still use it today. The only ingredient is vinegar

i live in korea and my family always air-dries clothes because dryers are very uncommon here; apartment units are small and people just don't have the space for a dryer as well as a washer and washers that techincally have a drying function kind of suck at drying clothes lol. i used to think it was a pain in the ass (and it still is sometimes!) but it's nice to know that something that rose out of necessity for space is actually helping the environment lol

Yesss, I have been using chestnuts for years now. I collect them in fall, crush them with a hammer, let them dry out completely and then just keep it in a bag. Throw a handful of the crushed chestnuts in a cup, pour some boiling water over, wait a few minutes and use the liquid for laundry. Works like a charm (remember to not use it with white clothes though, as it makes them look grey-ish)

I have a question about the guppy bag. It is made of nylon and will itself also generate micro plastics. As a result, how is using it a solution? TIP: Scrounge old clothes pegs... they are solid construction and the metal spring has tension in it. Old clothes pegs will hold thick items and actually keep clothing held in place where ever you peg it. I have old clothes pegs from my Mom’s laundry stash, they are from the 50’s or 60’s and they are QUALITY. New clothes pegs are wimpy and poor quality. If you can find some old clothes pegs at a garage sale or second hand store... snag them... you will not regret this purchase. PS - maybe your grandma has some old clothes pegs that she can spare?? 🌸

Guys, so soap nuts REALLY work for you? I find that using them in a regular washing machine at 40 degrees is good for most of my loads which are clothes that are maybe sweaty but not stained, but anything that has stains i'll collect separately and wash with regular detergent. I still feel this is OK since I'm overall using much less detergent but it kinda feels like the loads with soap nuts get cleaned because of the movement with the water and not because of the nuts themselves...

I usually try all eco friendly product and solutions but when I can't get out a stain a still go back to my old vanish powdet that I've had since forever. Have you ever dried an eco egg to wash you clothes? Can't decide if I want to wash with an eco egg or soa nuts when I have my own place to live. Tru earth just seems way more expensive when you break it down and I would reader spend that money on meat replacements.
@lukeshepherd9529
@lukeshepherd9529 3 года назад
I've had an eco egg for 6 years. It's a very mild wash so you have to avoid big stains. But you can always boost it with whitener (sodium percarbonate) or cleaner (sodium carbonate/bicarb soda) if you wash clothes regularly and don't have hideously dirty clothes it will be fine. Same deal with soap nuts. Soap nuts are more natural and cheaper.

I haven't heard anyone really talk about this but wouldn't an old-fashioned washboard be useful and eco-friendly as well? I'm interested in using a washboard rather than a big machine because of the energy and microplastics deprived from it, though than again a washboard consists of work to get clothes clean and to dry... an interesting topic I'd love to hear more about! :-)
@droppiedoe
@droppiedoe 3 года назад
It is true that a washing cycle uses a lot of energy, therefore I wash many of my clothes by hand and then dry them on a drying rack. But cleaning certain really dirty clothing by hand could be done with a washboard, but is very labour intensive, and difficult, obviously, but also very harsh for the clothing itself. It could work for jeans or linen, but modern mixed fibers might not survive several washes on a washboard. Still, in some situations is could be usefull. Every washing cycle that can be avoided is a win.
