After loosing my entire makeup bag, I finally found some natural makeup that aligns better with my zero waste lifestyle! Hooray! Better, not perfect... it's a process.
In today's video, I wanted to share with you guys which items I have chosen for my zero waste makeup kit, how I use them and what they look like on. I also share my criteria when looking for a product. This will be unique to everyone, so what I choose for me might not be right for you.
p.s. if you enjoy my videos and wanna say thanks or "cheers" then I'd love you to grab me a coffee (organic, of course!): ko-fi.com/R5R3... - thanking you!

What's going on with you hair?
I'm just growing it out to it's natural colour and will get it cut at some point once it grows a touch more. No big plans as yet!
What are natural bristles made of?
Animal hair... I'm not into synthetic brushes personally but, each to their own.
Wait, you're not vegan?
Nope! Quite the opposite, in fact. If you want to read my food-losophy, click right here: eco-boost.co/my...
Where do you buy bulk in London?
I have this little list for ya right here: eco-boost.co/wh...

The only thing that bothers me with trying to go zero waste is that unless I do my own products, I’m more likely to have to buy things online that need to be shipped across seas to get to me. That could be by plane or boat most likely using petroleum, and then a truck to bring the delivery to my pickup location. That is most likely resulting in a lot of CO2 as well. For example: washing powder. Either I can buy it in the store or by laundry nuts from India, which is such a waste of transport. BUT then again I guess most stuff is being produced in Asia anyways... living in Sweden means few things are produced locally hahah

Anna, no need. Reduce your spending is one of the Rs meaning you dont really need all that imported crap. Nobody died from not wearing make up. I dont wear any 99% of the time. You have to.learn to like yourself and dont mind toxic people. Being natural is good for your skin. And quit trying to impress and compete with other people unless you are a movie star with buckets load of cash???? Common sense? Use the make up you already own? Dont be lazy !!!!!

I love your videos. The makeup looks great!! I think it's so much about using what you love. Making all the changes towards less waist is great. That way when it comes to makeup its ok if everything isn't perfect. I want my items to be hygienic and well protected. Companies have come a long way so even if there is still plastic the reduction of it is huge.

Have you done a cost comparison of zero waste and typical waste lifestyles. For some odd reason I am finding products that are more sustainable, use less packaging, etc. to be more expensive than their regular counterparts.
@aquietwild
@aquietwild 6 лет назад
Jason Hunt yes that’s generally the case - due to small batch manufacturing, better ingredients, less filler, fair wages and working conditions. However for many products you can buy them used, which is sustainable AND affordable. Win win.
@missberyl
@missberyl 6 лет назад
depends what brands you normally buy stuff from haha if you buy from the drug store normally then it's definitely more expensive, but if you're buying from sephora, then it's either normal prices or sometimes a bit cheaper XD
@ritzafrancois4863

In the US, Whole Foods has become alot more affordable with the amazon buyout so I am finding lots of fruits and veggies without packaging to be cheaper. In terms of make up, i've generally have only been able to find cruelty free/vegan items that work for my skin but unfortunately have bad packaging. 100% pure which was mentioned in the video has very few dark shades which I need for my skintone. So some of us cant even find alternatives for zero waste lifestyles yet. Wearing no makeup often has been very inexpensive tho.
@pepperspikes1849
@pepperspikes1849 6 лет назад
Yep, as other people have said, that does tend to be the case, but products for zero waste or reduced waste lifestyles are also often longer lasting than for the typical lifestyles that pay no mind to the amount of waste produced. Zero wasters or people who try to produce less waste usually happen to be people who also don’t really have “fancy” or indulgent lifestyles-usually people whose values revolve around more natural/organic ways of living. For makeup specifically, a lot of zero wasters don’t tend to wear makeup everyday, so the makeup they do buy will last longer. It may be more expensive in the short run and sometimes even in the long run, depending on the specific products and brands one might buy, but for many people who like to buy zero waste or reduced waste products, it really isn’t about the money; it’s about how we want to live. If the lifestyle doesn’t suit you because of the costs or any other reason, I would suggest to just do what you can and/or what you’re willing to do to reduce your waste. A lot of people have to make compromises in some aspect of their lives because it is hard in this day and age to be zero waste, or even just less wasteful, but like Kate said, it isn’t about being perfect.
@mickolitschi
@mickolitschi 6 лет назад
For me I just realised that the single products ARE more expensive but I just don't buy that much anymore! Before my zero waste life style I just bought random stuff when I was in the drug store which is not the case anymore :)

I love everything apart from the brushes. Ecotools do amazing ones, that are cruelty free and made from bamboo (the handles). I have asked about the brushes and they come from goats in China, that are shaved before slaughter because the meat industry needs them to be for sanitary reasons. It isn’t necessary to use this type is ‘natural’ in my opinion and it is a choice I find upsetting. I care a lot more about how animals are treated than the world having a little more plastic.
@aquietwild
@aquietwild 6 лет назад
Helen Williams I totally understand and respect your point. It’s hard to make the best decision and you just have to make the best decision for you. I wanted to point out, as someone who avoids plastic, that there’s also the consideration that plastic kills birds and marine life. So, plastic alternatives to animal products can still lead to animal suffering. Just something else to consider.
@cristinaborges999

I am very tempted by lots of zero waste makeup but they often contain activated charcoal which often has to be made at very high temperatures-anybody know of the implications of this? i.e. waste involved in the fuel to get it to such high temperatures. I'm often weary with these things whether zero waste just offsets the wastage to another source i.e. fuel for heating, cooking, burning, re-washing etc.

Does the Fat and the Moon eye coal smudge when used as a mascara? I just received it and I was so excited to try it, but it never seemed to "dry" and was constantly leaving little lash prints on my lids. I want this to work as a dual product (mascara and eyeliner) so badly and I'm wondering if its just user error or the product is just not meant for my lashes. Any tips?

Hello!! I stumbled across your video on the hunt for some organic makeup brands. After seeing that you weren't vegan, I was interested in hearing why... I just read your 'foodlosophy' and honestly I found myself agreeing with most of it!! Wow. I'm not sure how to process this. I've been an adamant veggie since 11 and flirting with veganism for about 5 years. Recently I've been distancing myself more and more from veganism because I've become more aware of its environmental impact - and I can't stand the hypocrisy of those who act like their lifestyle is 100% guilt free, simply because they don't consume animal products. Its clearly a more complex issue. I've also struggled with my health for a while (IBS, anemia, low energy). I keep hearing stories of ex veggies feeling healthier when including organic/grass fed/free range etc animals in their diet. I'm seriously reconsidering what it means to be a conscious eater/consumer. The problem is... I can't stomach the idea of eating flesh! Even if I knew the farming practises were good. The animal was happy. Even if I could dismiss the feeling I have that killing animals is just wrong (for instance, if I found road kill, or if I knew meat was going to be thrown away if I didn't eat it). I still feel sick at the thought of flesh in my mouth!!! Is this due to years of not eating it? Is this something I should try to overcome? I haven't had cravings for meat in years and the smell and sight disgusts me. Logically I would be striving to consume food in a similar way to the way you outlined. But emotionally, I don't know if I can do it. There's still a huge part of me that's like OK I don't want animals to be harmed for my sake, full stop!!! And one of the best way to do this is to abstain from the animal farming industry - how can I guarantee that the farm I buy cheese from is treating the cows with respect? How can I know the farm I buy eggs from isn't killing hundreds of male chicks at birth? The one thing I can consider is eating fish again. My dad is a fisherman and I grew up around many a dead fish. I used to go fishing, kill and gut fish, eat it for dinner. I feel slightly desensitised to the body of a dead fish. Maybe the desensitisation to dead bodies is the more natural way to go about things. God knows we have a weird attitude to death in western culture. (On the note of fish, you say you don't buy fish unless line or pot caught... Do you avoid net caught because of its scale? Lobster/crab pots are used on the same sort of scale as netting. Obviously trawling is terrible but my dad set-nets in shore in his small boat and his method of fishing is pretty old school. He doesn't catch much and he works by the season. If I were to eat meat, I would have no worries about the eco impact of eating fish he caught. Fisherman like my dad need all the support they can get too!) Anyway I'm not sure if you'll see this but if you do, I want to say thank you for talking honestly about this subject, it's so refreshing. I'm going to do some further research and have a think about what I can do. :) How did you feel about the visceral act of eating flesh when you came back to it after so long?

I just read the blog post and for those (or even Kate) who might be interested in someone else's thoughts about it, here is what I have to say: I agree with a lot of what she says, especially that veganism is possibly not the only answer to the environmental issues. But I also think we can care for the environment, the soil and everything else and also care for the animals and be vegans. We don't know for sure if a plant based diet is healthier for everyone, as we don't know for sure if a meat based diet is healthy at all. These things change all the time and we are in a big experiment. But I think if we have the option, we should be vegans for the animals. But not only vegans, we should do so much more than that .. like following the eco friendly way. Some people might say "but you can't find a vegan and eco friendly alternative for wool!".. sure we can! Look at the amount of things we created so far.. :) And it is all beautiful when Kate (and me and you and a whole bunch of other people) says that it is better to look at the chain of what you are consuming - despite what it is - than being an abusive vegan. But have you realized that most of the people don't have the option of consuming only eco friendly, fair trade, sustainable etc stuff? Because of its price, because of its availability or anything that can prive people from those options (not everyone lives in Europe!).. and that being vegan may be the most - or only - available option they have to reduce their foot print on the world? Well, these are just some thoughts we can have on her post.. we have a lot more material to talk about, but, as she hopes, let's move on! I was just curious anyway.. :)
