The ZX Spectrum Plus tends to get overlooked, with either the original 48k or the +2/+3 machines getting most of the lime light.
So lets take a tour around my ZX Spectrum plus to see what it offered.
As well as checking out a few of the upgrades that I've done.

Quite surprised they were doing Spectrums in auctions in 1991, I thought it would have more likely been a car boot sale jobbie, like how I got mine :D
@GouldFishOnGames
@GouldFishOnGames 3 года назад
the overseas armed forces used to organize these auctions every so often so people could sell off some stuff before returning home. It it really felt like a halfway house between a carboot sale and an auction, as they were happy to take a bid from a 10 year old 😉 But I think that was due to no one else wanting it.

We must be a similar age - as during the early 90s I used to pick up loads of 48k Spectrums & kit from car boots! :)

@@adrianhughes2163 It was a sweet spot for Spectrum collecting, they were cropping up in boot sales, you could buy multiple full games on a coverdisc from several magazines, all while being able to buy brand new games in stores still. I definetely remember buying Rainbow Islands form John Menzies at the time, Possibly Chase HQ as well.

I love the old rubber key Spectrum because it was my first home computer & because I played on it with my late father, I love my +2 because of it’s increased capabilities, it’s all in 1 solution & the fact it still works but aesthetically I just love the look of the Plus, it is by far the most aesthetically pleasing to me personally. Great video, thanks. If you have 1 of the DK'Tronics keyboard/case upgrade kits I’d love to see a video on that sometime? My best mate had his Specy in 1 back in the 80’s & I was so jealous! 😄

I've had one of these since about 2012 when I was given it from a university I was on work experience at. Sat in the box for many years until last summer when I started on it. New keyboard membrane, bit of a clean and a composite mod. Not played anything on it yet, good to see a nice overview for the uninitiated

those keyboard membrane's they always have to be replaced 😆 hope you have some fun with it as they are lovely little machines, though loading off tape isn't great 😉

I got this version of the spectrum for chirstmas one year, on boxing day it caught fire and slightly burnt my Mums carpet. Just after new year it was replaced by the less flammable Acorn electron.

I guess the talk of it having high failure rates (high flame rates) is real. Crazy to think of a home micro going on fire!
@RetroBytesUK
@RetroBytesUK 3 года назад
@@GouldFishOnGames It was probably that regulator you replaced as that's where to small flash of flame seamed to come from followed by all the smoke. There was that famous Ad Acorn took out showing the failure rates of machines, that lead to the battle of the boffins.

I had a Speccy + back in the day --- the keyboard membrane snapped, but by then I had an Amiga.

Snapping membranes were way too common the the Speccy.

I've often thought about getting a Spectrum but my main nostalgia it with Commodore machines. A VIC20 could be nice but even that's not a high priority. I'd need more space! ;)

Nostalgia does tend to fuel these things, but it always comes down to space and there is never enough!

I find it amazing how close the Spectrum + looks to a 128K in presentation. 👀👀

It was the same person that designed the cases. this came out a year before the 128.

Interesting about the failure rate. I wonder what the problem was? Lovely bit of kit you have there!

I was thinking exactly the same thing about the failure rate, although it does make for a nice ‘typical Sinclair’ quote even if it doesn’t quite add up

I read about it in a few places, but trying to get any concrete info was hard. But seeing how often Sinclair had issues with building Spectrums its not too surprising

Did a HARLEQUIN 128K REV 2D in my ZX Spectrum Plus case and a new membrane. Use the ZX-HD and the DivMMC Enjoy! Pro One with it.

hi. Nice friendly video. EXcuse my ignorance.I really am totally Non Techy. I'm trying to identify the model of my own zx spectrum plus. It looks exactly the same as the longer one you show in your great video, apart from the view from the rear. You have a 5 pin din socket for tv. Mine has a socket like a Phono insert, (it takes a central pin, and the inserted lead then also has 4 "leaves" that grip to the outside of the socket.) Is that the bit you refer to having replaced yourself, to "up" the picture quality? I know you explained it but I am dumb and dont understand the terminolgy you used) If it IS that component then I am sure mine is the same model as yours. If you also know what specific model number /version it is (mine also has pop out feet and reset button) Id really appreciate it, as I want to research the value of it. I'm planning to sell it, along with 35 original games I still have from the 1980's (!) I suppose the games are another jungle of values; maybe some more collectable than others but as I say I am ignorant of all that. If you have any contact links to game places due to your own interest in "the speccy" I'd appreciate if you could post a couple in reply. Sorry to be so Needy, as opposed to Nerdy! :) It would be kind of you, and much appreciated. Steve

most ZX Spectrum +'s have a RF jack for the video (the phono style connector). I removed that and replaced it with an S-Video connector, as it gives a clearer imagine. This isn't common, I just wanted to do it for mine. There are 2 versions of the ZX Spectrum, one with rubber keys. and the other with the plastic keyboard, which is the Specturm + and what I'm showing in the video. All Spectrum + machines have the reset button and flip out feet. the actual model number is harder to say as they did a number of revisions. As for prices, I'm not sure I got that one for cheap as it was broken and I fixed it up. I've not bought a Spectrum in many years so no idea of current prices. best thing todo is search ebay and check the sold listings.

@@GouldFishOnGames Thank you so much. I really appreciate your prompt reply. I wish I had your skills to improve mine, but the ZXHD/raspberry gadget Ive seen is about £80 or so which is beyond me. I guess I have other priorties now so it has to go. Thank you very much indeed; I'll probably send it to auction. Have a great day/week/life! Steve

@@GouldFishOnGames Hi. Thank you for your knowledgeable reply. My apologies for not responding sooner; internet and other issues. I do appreciate it. I have now entered it and about 40 of the games games for an auction in early August; we shall see what it fetches! The Games Expert who dealt with it responding with joy when I took the lid off and “Danger Mouse” was the game on top, as it brought back special memories for her. Nice to spread a little joy when disposing of stuff! If I remember I will post here what it makes. Thanks again, Steve
