I have no issues using 12mm tooling in mine. But one thing I have noticed, is that no one ever talks about the ability to pin these tool posts to the cross slide for greater rigidity using the hole in the corner opposite the mounts for the tool holders. It means putting a suitable hole in the cross slide, but once pinned, it is rock solid.
@TheKnacklersWorkshop
@TheKnacklersWorkshop 2 года назад
Hello Jack, Many thanks for watching my video... I agree that the pin would help a lot... I am considering removing the compound slide as I don't use it to much, I also have a taper turning attachments for the odd taper I may turn... Take care. Paul,,

Gday Paul, that’s a nice finish on the QCTP, I have the same on my small lathe and I found it great to work with, I run 12mm tooling in mine no problem but I haven’t measured it to see if it’s the same model as yours, the tool holders can be expensive to buy on there own, I was lucky that I was given mine with a heap of tool holders, the only thing I found was when you are changing tool holders I always held the holder in the middle when I turn the handle to lock it in, this way it always repeated on centre height, great video mate P.S. Good some Myford action soon....😉

Hi Paul, They are quite good, for the money. I've been using one for quite a while, only had problem with one tool holder being incorrectly machined. I use the same one from Rdg tools, the individual tool holders are quite expensive, I use up to 12mm tooling on the Sc4 lathe. They did offer a discount for buying more than one, when they are in-stock The boring bar holder is not very rigid, with the vee groove, so I use boring bars with flats on the shank, with standard tool holders They work well for me :) ATB Adam
@TheKnacklersWorkshop
@TheKnacklersWorkshop 3 года назад
Hello Adam, That's good to hear you used one for a while and interesting to hear the tool holders quality is intermittent... I am not sure how to overcome that other than try and make them myself which to be truthful is no guarantee of quality - lol. Thanks for visiting. Paul,,

Hi Paul. Interesting video. So many different QCTP styles to chose from. I totally agree with your comment regarding people exceeding the design capacity of lathes and tooling and then whining about how bad they are. Don't these people have any brains at all ? LOL Total butchers IMHO. I was interested to see how square the tool holders pulled up. This is always an issue when the piston or ram is not dead on the holder center line as they can cant. That's why it's important that the QCTP be the correct height for the lathe/ center line. 10 mm tooling is quite OK for that sized lathe. I like the way the Myford cross slide is "T" slotted crossways, same as my early Sherline. So much more RIGID than the current fashion/fad of slotting the cross slide longitudinally. I had a rant about this a ways back. Most people will never use them anyway, so it's a pointless exercise 99% of the time. I bought a few items from RDG many years ago and the quality was OK, but nothing exceptional. Cheers Rob

Hello Rob, You are right about lots of QCTP to chose from and for quite a long time I was going to go down a different route but eventually picked this one... Those are nice. I looked up a few and they are very reasonable priced and seem, in my mind anyway, to be a more solid lockup than the wedge and dovetail type I have. The only drawback seems the cutter size as you mentioned. Most of my stuff is 3/8" and 1/2". I have actually had to modify a few of my cutter holders to fit my own. Thanks for sharing. All the best!
@TheKnacklersWorkshop
@TheKnacklersWorkshop 3 года назад
Hello Eddie, Thanks for visiting... I agree they do seem more solid than the Dovetail/Wedge type and are not that much more expensive. I think here in the UK the additional tool holders do seem to be a little more expensive so, I may be limited on how many I have. It will be interesting to see what I can do with the smaller tooling and if I have to make modifications. Take care. Paul,,

Thanks for sharing. A suggestion on the tool post is to pull it apart and clean it thoroughly because of the potential of all the grit inside. All inexpensive unit should be cleaned in that fashion due to the lack of attention when they are assembled at the factory.

Hi Paul, getting there mate, looks well on the lathe. Looking forward seeing it in use. I think you have a good plan to tool up the machine within its limits, so many will try to overstretch the capacity and then get disillusioned when they get chatter / vibration. You can do a lot with 10mm Tooling, just need a bit more patience, it's a hobby so there's no rush. Cheers, Jon

Hi Paul, that's basically the same toolpost that I have, I think I have the next size up. My tools tend to sit right at the bottom of the toolpost, and on a couple I've actually had to remove a small step of material (maybe 3mm) to give me enough adjustment to get them on centre. I'm generally using 16mm tools, but the toolholders are 20mm. I suppose it just depends on the lathe. The only trouble that I've had with the toolpost is that the piston can be rattled loose, especially during interrupted cuts. I think this may be because both parts are so hard, there's no elasticity to soak up the vibrations. I didn't get any locking screws with mine! All the best.

The Dickson QCTP looks great on your Myford, and that style is quite rigid. Most Myfords I've seen in videos have either a Dickson style or an old Norman style. If you would like to use slightly larger insert toolholders, I've seen where others have milled down the bottom to fit.
