used right, line portals are awesome. this somewhat reminds me of Descend. in Descend you create rooms and hallways by connecting "cubes" (six sided shapes). the awesome thing was that everything was relative to the cube it was in, so even if cubes shared the same 3D coordinates, they where entirely separate spaces unless they where connected. i have seen "elevators" sending you to different "floors" depending on whether you fly right or left around a pillar. or a "door" floating in the centre of two overlapping arenas. creating such maps must have been a total pain, because most of the time the editor view was "outside" the rooms.

fun fact. the mirror archvile has only 5 million health. the "mdk" command can kill it in 5 uses. fun fact 2. if you don't kill the dog (you monster.) the dog is with you at the true beach.

The QR code shows an immensely confusing picture. It shows Steve Nelson, next to the picture of the dead Tom. Steve/Veddge died on the same day, in the same place, on the same year, both Tom and Steve died the same day in the exact same area. No-one really knows what to make of it, but most people seem to think it's an ARG, as the real photos of the house show things like the impossible hallway with the Pepsi and Milkshake room doors, as well as seemingly super wide or narrow chairs next to the kitchen counter.

I figure that the interior photos are very likely 3D renders, edited and displayed in poor quality to hide the imperfections. The pictures of "Steve" all show the exact same grinning face, likely a result of using thispersondoesnotexist, which generates a completely new face with each reload. It would be the same story with the other "people" in the photos. I generally dislike ARGs. There's not much of a difference between the methods of something like this, and the methods of propaganda.

I think the general consensus I've come across is that Tom and Steve were exes, and when Tom died, Steve couldn't handle it and ended up becoming a victim of suicide. Personally, I love the idea that it's embracing a queer story, so I'm biased towards that interpretation anyway.

1:04:23 the rocket launcher is in the mirror gas station and the BFG is in the airport bathroom- but you have to walk part of the bathroom to only let blood fill one side then walk back to the exit- do not walk the full bathroom loop… Also if you don’t kill the dog (can’t believe you did) it the dog is sleeping nicely on the beach.

I really adore the fact most of the rooms, like the water room, the early 2000s playroom/basement, the house, the holiday inn area(with the dogs) and the gas station all pulled from popular Liminal Spaces art/pictures. Liminal Space really does engage a sense of unease but this is the first time I’ve seen it successfully used in quality horror psychological horror. Very well done

I really wish I could find the pictures they're all based on. Also, if you think about it, even the use of Like the Wind fits this theme--people have often called it "the musical equivalent of a liminal space".

I forget who managed to do it but someone did manage to transcribe the QR code on the tombstone into something readable and it leads to another picture, it's an obituary for Steve Nelson and apparently he died on the exact same day as his friend Thomas Allord (I think that's how the last name is spelled?) Another interesting bit is that both obituaries mention them marrying their highschool crush, but neither mentions them being survived by their spouse, and given the S+A carving (S for Steve, A for Allord) in game a lot of folks drew the fairly obvious conclusion that Steve & Thomas were just a bit more than friends.

yes, because when most people write their names as letters, they always do it as one person's first name and the other person's last name. it would've been cleverer for the story (if your proposition is true) for it to be N+A. The major flaw with this thinking is the time period in which Thomas died, supposedly many years before 2023. Now idk exactly how long before that Thomas died, but the fact that they were married implies that if Thomas died before gay marriage was legalized, your theory is impossible.

There were avenues to get married before legalization/executive action got involved, though their recognition by the court of law was often more a matter of where it was recognized and where you resided over being legally recognized as law of the land. But in support of challenging the hypothesis I've -never- seen the use of first initial of one partner and last initial of second partner. It could be a reference instead to perhaps it not being found acceptable in social circles wherever they were and perhaps in an effort to hide who his partner was, he used the last initial because nobody does that, so someone named S loves someone named A, like an Allie or Amy or who knows what. This would keep Thomas safe from speculation.

I love how this map, while mostly being horror/unnerving, still manages to have a happy ending. Also there's clearly a whole bunch of untold story that you the player have to piece together for yourself using items, context clues, and visual metaphors such as the fact that Steve had a wife and it's possible she's the one who is dead in the hospital room. We can infer this because of the wedding ring, the "S and A" markings and the fact that he is alone on the beach at the end.

Honestly, there’s so much ambiguity that it’s hard to really tell the truth. They don’t share a last name, for one, and while both apparently found a “partner” to marry, said partner is never named in either obituary. Speaking of names, both Thomas and Steven’s parents names start with the same letters, and they both have a sister whose name starts with an “S.” Also, oddly, Stevens mom is listed with two different maiden names in his obituary. Also, there’s the mention of “the miscarriage”, referenced by the attic crib and baby bottle, and possibly by the airport bathroom. It’s clearly significant, but makes no sense without inserting speculation into it. Honestly, given Steven’s self-admitted issues and mental state as he worked on the map, it’s highly likely that he’s such an unreliable narrator that nothing he states can be taken at face value. The .pk3 sure as hell can’t, especially if it’s a combination of Steven and Thomas’ memories and emotions, along with whatever third force is bending things to further it’s own agenda. I highly doubt there’s enough information present in-game to really nail down the story

@@eratoster777 It feels sad to hear this, since you are certainly not alone. I remember many people I knew, back in the corona lockdowns had nightmares in that time - it was no coincidence. I genuinely wish you better thoughts, because whatever you think of, it reflects in your dreams, at least that's what I believe, e.g. children will never see "shadow man stalking on bed" dreams if they never see television or use a phone... There is a famous myth/story which says people started dreaming in monochrome once they started watching early television, it's likely true. I would argue not having such hellish dreams is implied in happiness or at least a calm state of mind, and to quote this video: Happiness has to be fought for.

@@eratoster777 I am happy to hear you no longer experience nightmares. As for the requirements for triggering nightmares it's expected to have them when stressed heavily. For example, those who are traumatized, re-experience parts of that traumatic experience for a few days after the trauma (since their thoughts are focused on the trauma). By extension, "time heals all wounds" as they say, which practically for these trauma victims is their thoughts being redirected to other things of importance, e.g. daily/mundane stuff. I cannot help further, what I wrote is just my observations, though if you are curious enough of "what do dreams show, what triggers them" , to even read a book, I suggest "Man and His Symbols" by C.G. Jung; It's a good read.

Things you missed: the Rocket Launcher is in the Mirrored Gas Station, and the BFG is hidden in the Airport Bathroom (you have to position your field of view so that the blood covers everything *except* the entrance), the Good Dog joins you on the True Beach if you don't kill either of them (though not on the Fake Beach), and activating cheats like IDDQD or NOCLIP gives hints in the chat. Also, if you noclip 'out of reality', you end up in a _horrible_ Backrooms maze with a single unkillable monster roaming around.

@@i_hakz _Eh,_ mirrored Underhalls adds a bit of atmosphere, but once you have the Super Shotgun, it doesn't add to the main map's lore, or change the gameplay like having another weapon. Also, a lot of the references were tracked down to a TikTok account (the house's design, Pumpkin Rick, etc), I've seen another video only recently that added that context.

Not unkillable, just has over 1.4 billion HP. You also end up there if you go to the 'exit' pad in the 'hotel'. Is there a way out? I dunno.

@@AmyraCarter I believe there *is* an exit, but good luck finding it. Also, while _technically_ killable, it's immune to console commands and there isn't enough ammo in the whole stage to do it, same as the 'unkillable' Mirrored/Shadow Archvile.

@@magusware8721 You are able to place multiple starting points in a map so the player starts from different location. When you beat the mirrored Underhalls, it sends you back to MyHouse but with a flag telling the game to spawn you at the alternate starting position. I’m pretty sure one of the base maps from Doom II uses this. I can’t remember which one though.

I love the reference to House of Leaves with "Navidson Realty". It's a great book if you like this kind of disturbing and constantly changing and morphing horror. I wouldn't be surprised if the book inspired this wad in the first place.

I believe this map is somewhat inspired by House of Leaves, a book written in the form of a journal of a man slowly going insane as time goes on. The format of the book is bizarre. There's even a file among some of map's files titled "journal" written in a similar format and style with the word "House" highlighted blue just like in the title of the book.

Cerberus is the dog demon thing that guards the realm of Hades (in Greek mythology that is) or the underworld, or whatever people want to call it and whatever mythology you want to discuss about. See? I know my mythologies almost as much as you do. I was just talking about a sprite used in a different game that was copied into this one.

Can’t say enough how you mastered the art of being “story teller”. Such iconic, calm and friendly voice, the way you took my hand on first minute and took me with you through the whole story… The mod itself looks very very atmospheric, that beautiful music, sounds that slightly changes during each action, you can’t hear that right away but if you take your time you feel those changes… but your presence here makes it even better, I’m a big guy big I was scared multiple times… yes, scared by watching a video on RU-vid from my phone, even not in full screen and without my AirPods… I wanted few times to stop watching this and scroll down to watch another suggested videos. But I can’t. I was in a prison cell full with excitement… I have no idea how you did it. I didn’t watch any of your videos. But you made my night. Excellent work, man. Thanks for that journey. It was unrealistically real, full of real emotions and real as life. Especially when you hear real air sirens outsides and working air defence systems… Greetings from Kyiv…

You realize he plagarized everything in this review from Power Pak, right? Literally down to the 'reading the story segments while the gameplay floats by at 50% opacity' parts. The little title cards in between chapters. Most of the commentary is identical. He absolutely ripped off his shit.

@@fnhatic6694 and what ? I watched PowerPak's video. And few other 1h+ reviews/storyTelling/etc about this mod/map. And Midnight's video was the last one. And I liked that the most. God-tier video. For your dedication to editing this video and researching this WAD, I thank you deeply, as this seems the deepest WAD (if not the most influential) there is. As for the creator, sounds like textbook case of demon possession or demon harassment, feeding off his fears, and snowballing. Ez victim. March 2 entry is the most interesting of all however, which while very interesting (thought-form has manifested itself and cannot be killed), it's too extreme, so its probably an ARG, a dynamic/interactive horror project, which imo is masterpiece tier and will never be surpassed by another FPS. This being an elaborate horror project instead of outright mental illness, is the result of that QR code. Too extreme to be true.

As others have noted, this Wad seems to be a big homage to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Even the wad's backstory seems to be a reference to it- In the aforementioned novel, the main character Johnny Truant had an acquaintance named Zanpano die recently, and while going through Zampano's stuff he found a bunch of notes that were intended to be made into a book. Johnny decides to assemble them into one, and over time, the book he's piecing them together into seems to be driving him insane (though there is evidence that he *always was* this nuts). That sounds quite a bit like "Steve Nelson"'s experiences- He finds a doom map made by his friend, and so he decides to clean it up and post it online, apparently losing his mind more and more the longer he interacts with the wad.

Something I'm surprised you never went over is the fact that the floors have an overlapping design in the house. Because of how Doom works, it's not full proper 3D, and part of that limitation is that it cannot have one part of its map on top or underneath another part. Yet, the house alone has an attic and basement. It's all very well made with seemless transitions.

The QR code had to be edited cause whatever Steve did to add it made it hard for QR scanners The QR code leads to a part of Tom's obituary that was cut off. Specifically who was to the right of his obituary that was cut off in the pic. ...It's Steve's obituary & given what was mentioned he died the same day as Tom... Just goes to make us wonder whose journal have we been reading? If Steve is dead then who uploaded everything?

For me, the scariest doom mod I ever played was Lasting Light on the hardest mode, the stalker is extremely stressful in certain levels, combined with the lack of visibility, to me it's tense and stressful as hell.

Great video Midnight! I'm not one to actually say stuff like this, but some stuff of this WAD was triggering some emotional shit i went through... in specific the airport... Last year I lost my father, and in the weeks right before his passing I had recurring dreams of Airport Terminals and Train Stations which all ways led to nowhere or just came back to the same spot... and like one week after my father had passed, I had the same dream of the airport but in this dream my father said goodbye and that he was going on a trip and didn't know when he would come back... I've honestly been jaded ever since. Thanks for the experience Midnight as always, you're delivering quality content.

MyHouse is sadly like Undertale. Lightning in a bottle. Even more so. It's a super unusual anomaly solely because it's a Doom wad. So we won't see more in a while. Usually mods never catch the public this vividly. For a moment it was Amnesia The Dark Descent. Everybody with a microphone uploaded a let's play and analysis videos like this popped up. The best part is it deserved it. There are many other mods that arguably deserve it more. For the length of the mods, content, dedication, dark magic wizardly that made it and much more. Such as Blood's Deathwish which excelled the original with similar content amount. But MyHouse was very little with a lot packed into it. I'm glad we got to see such a huge love and interest in a cool mod. Sad this most likely won't happen again for many years to come.
