I went to Mykonos in 1983, I was a 21 year old student living in London at that time, I spent six weeks travelling the Greek islands with my then girlfriend. Mykonos was not the party island it has become, there was nothing like the crowds it has now, and there was a famous Pelican called Petros who used to wander around the narrow streets of the old town, he even featured on postcards, he was quite a celebrity and was there for many years... Mykonos was also popular with the Gay community and had a reputation as a " gay" island , not sure if that is still the case now, probably not. Seems like a lifetime away, I guess it was, probably one of the happiest summers of my life travelling around the Greek islands.....I've never returned since then, maybe I will one day.
One of if not my favourite city I ever visited. Love everything about Greece and the surrounding areas. Great episode as always😃. I guess I'll book another trip soon eh 😉 I am a fan now!
Just came back from cruise. Among others places we had stops on Mykonos and Santorini islands. Very nice islands but very small, super overcrowded and most of local people very unfriendly. Looks like they are very tired from huge amount of tourists. Too many people at the same time on tiny streets. The population of each island about 20000 people. Santorini has only 15500 permanent residents. One cruise ship brings about 4000 passengers. I saw six cruise ships in harbor at the same time. Every day more tourists on streets than actual local residents.
