Hooked when I heard the Bass., 17 years old., Never heard anyone play with violence and freedom before. Brecker bothers took hits for playing Mingus. Went back to find the man. A brilliant composer. A musician. Deeply connected to his recordings. Too soon. Left this planet. Still makes me think about our nation.
Wonderful track with a great rhythm section providing constant infusion of creative energy. Beautiful opening bass solo. Love watching Jimmy Knepper take charge with Randy Brecker and Joe Farrell wailing. Beautiful unison riff. Thanks for the treat.
Check out Joe play flute on the Bronx singer/songwriter Laura Nyro track 'Poverty Train'(1968). On the same LP Zoot Sims plays tenor sax on 'Lonely Women'. The LP also has Bernie Glow and Mel Davis. The Breckers also played on later Laura Nyro LP's. Nyro, a rock/pop artist used only top jazz players on her first two LP's. On her first LP (1967) Toots Thieleman plays on 3 tracks: Lazy Susan, Billy's Blues, He's a Runner. Buddy Lucas plays on Wedding Bell Blues and And When I Die, songs which are now iconic in Western culture.
I thought Joe sounds great as always but Randy was killin, and nailed the 6/8 time. And the original solo by Booker Ervin had such a vibe to it. Of course he didn't have the modern thing like Joe. Good stuff..
Hot. Saw and heard and wrote the critic for our local newspaper Oberhessische Presse in about 1986, when they performed a beloved concert in our local Jazz Club CAVETE, run by Roman Klöcker (g) that time and the Jazz Initiative Marburg (Hesse, Germany). Open stage every Monday evening 21.00 Uhr (09 p.m.)
Dynasty was great live...Saw an unknown to me great trombonist in a jazz club Stockholm's Old Town in summer 1976. Imagine my surprise years later when the same guy appeared with Mingus Dynasty, Jimmy Knepper. He had on of the greatest album titles: "Cunningbird".
This is from a record called "Live At Montreux". That was one of the first jazz records I ever heard, and here is a video of it. Wow! Any more videos from this gig?
This is "Organic Real Jazz" coming from among the best musicians. Joe is my guy! When and how he died? Joe Farrell? I think Joe Farrell, Carter Jefferson, Bob Berg, Michael Breaker.. I think "Organic Real Jazz" when I think of them - virtuosos par excellence! May their Souls rest in Peace!
Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting and Better Get Hit are two different tunes, both in the same time signature and with similar feels. They aren't the same piece.
@docsax I guess anyone employed by Mingus is by definition possessed of 'The Modern Thing", or else Mingus wouldn't have had them in the band...after all, what is Mingus if not modern?
