I feel like the reboot really missed an opportunity to show a group of girl friends who have their flaws and are still learning to socialize and deal with conflict amidst the struggles of growing up....but no. The girls just continuously act fake, hypocritical, and never seem to learn anything from these episodes where their friendship is the focus or issues could be properly addressed.

Honestly the glasses thing was quite opposite in my school. There where alot of people who wanted to where glasses because it made them look cute and enhanced their looks in a way. You don't know how many people who asked to borrow my glasses in hogh school. I think it also helped that most people I grew up with thought glasses make you look smarter and more put together. I would like to clarify that I didn't grow up in America so maybe that's why our priorities were different. Because people loved the nerds as long as they where not obnoxious.

Bullies have gotten more creative. It's not that some people don't think glasses and or braces look dorky or nerdy, it's just that kids have become far more brutal than saying 'Oh, look at her, she has braces. What a nerd!' I live in the USA and I haven't been picked on yet for having braces and glasses.

Yeah, I was and still am insecure about wearing glasses. I was a bully because I got picked on for wearing glasses, the classic "four eyes". I remember seeing media like Hey Arnold and The Rage: Carrie 2 where people with glasses either got punched in the face with their glasses on or the lens explode into your eyes. Helga Pataki punched some guy with glasses on, it was always a gag.

It's kinda hard for me to accept Myron and Zoey together as this sweet couple as if they didn't already make Myron creepy and unappealing previously in the personality department. He hits on every girl at any given opportunity and is fine with spreading rumors for attention, and in the reboot is a crypto-bro and conspiracy theorist. Zoey already rejected him 3 separate times in The End of Innocence, she obviously wasn't interested in him, and it's only by the end of the episode where she's ended it with Noah and is alone that they can act like Myron not having a racial preference for her is somehow a good enough reason for them to be together. It's classically "pair the spares" - everybody else has romantic interests, so let's pair up these two despite them having nothing in common other than the fact that they're both nerds.

Real talk, I hated the way the show treated Myron in both the original and reboot. Basically saying it's okay to look down people that need glasses and are social awkward. If anything Penny and the other's mistreatment of him was just another example of how superficial they all are. And I always felt it was a waste because Myron could have been the fourth guy friend of the group ( was including Sticky, Duke, and Michael in that). Oh well, maybe season three will do him some justice.

Off topic but: Daria is an interesting example with the classic glasses trope. It's interesting in the episode where she gets contacts to drive no one is like wow she's hot now, the most she gets is wow she's trying to fit it, and daria doesn't like that. It was just such an interesting episode of a show from that time where "wow look she took of her glasses she hot now" was so prevalent.

I hate the way they treat Myron and Zoey. Those are the worst friends to have if you can even call them friends. They essentially "adopt" you out of pity. You're looked at more like a human pet than a friend really. If at any given moment you do or say anything they don't like (even if it mirrors their own behaviors) they won't think twice to lash out at you and "put you in your place" because how dare your ugly/socially awkward/nerdy/etc. self act in such a way. Essentially them "befriending" you makes them feel good as if they're doing some form of charity. "I was nice to and befriended the kid no one likes or wants to be around. I did a community service and am a good person." It doesn't help that individual because they're going constantly carry that anxiety and always have to walk on eggshells in fear of being humiliated/berated by their "friends" which could lead to psychological issues in adulthood.

The thing is that not only is Myron a desperate doormat, they also made him slimy. I understand Zoey doesn't have a good track record but come on they seriously lumped the "losers" together and not only that, Myron was flirting and basically begging daily at all the other girls in the group before landing on Zoey while she was at her lowest of the low and her self esteem completely shot, only then did Myron take a chance with her. They just did the "nerds" so dirty and this is just the writers way of throwing away characters into the background because they don't know how to write characters that aren't solely loud and rude and petty. So much potential down the drain.

I've always hated the glasses make you ugly trope because I actually find glasses very attractive! I also didn't much care for the ending of the episode, instead of Zoey starting something up with a guy that everyone has made her think she deserves maybe the girls could have acted like friends for once and talked about what happened more and ways that they can recognize the same behaviors later on. The entire show all they do is show us how gross they all think Myron is but they think he's fine for Zoey? He's thrown himself at all of these girls at different times and doesn't seem to generally care about them as people. I'm not trying to hate on Myron but just to point out that he isn't valuing Zoey any more than that other guy he just doesn't care what race a woman is if she'll give him the time of day. And now all of her friends are fine with her being caught up with a guy who doesn't really care about her but it's fine because it doesn't challenge them or make them jealous at all?

Great Video bro! As a nerd, I have never liked how they portray us in cartoons we are always seen as weirdo or freaks of nature you have the magnifying glasses alluding to us having astigmatisms or visions problems, the plaid shirts, which points to the urkel stereotypes, they love to showcase us as being scary or spineless and allowing people to bully us. On top of that, they love to push this narrative that we are just so ugly and desperate for love. I would have loved if they used his character to point out the peer groups in school and how you have the popular kids vs the nerd kids. That could have been a good episode talking about how your social or popular group predetermines who you deserve to be with or in association with because the nerds are weirdos and expected to be with other nerds because they both are seen as monstrosities who don't fit in and deserve one another. Then you have the cheerleaders or football players who are the pretty people and athletic folks that deserve anything they want. It would have been nice if they used this episode as more of a teachable moment for nerds letting them that they are beautiful just the way they are, they don't have to fit in with other people, align themselves with people with similar interests, and that they should not pursue people that do not respect them or even recognize their humanity.

I won't discuss my middle and highschool experience but I will say this. Through our my life, I've struggled with autism, especially socially. Particularly with girls. Call me an incel if you want, btw. When I would try to address social problems, I was always met with platitude after platitude. For example I started working with a remote yoga instructor (and she was CUTE). When she asked me about my goals, I said I want to be more attractive. She replied with "All bodies are beautiful.". I could feel the steam coming out of my ears I was so annoyed. That was like a tutor asking about your goals and then telling you that they don't believe in grades. I've noticed that there are too types of people who give these platitudes. The first are those of higher social or economic status who seem to not want to acknowledge their status, or make believe that you both are equal so you won't try and compete with them. The second are those who are lower on the totem and use these platitudes to take advantage of those above them, avoiding the consequences of their own actions. As an adult, I've gotten cynical. I've learned that the world operates off of a darwinistic set of rules; survival of the fittest. Or in the case of us humans, survival of the most sociable or charismatic. Life in general is competitive. For us humans, though, that competition is more social. In other words, the rules in life barely change from those in highschool. Social status = options and opportunities. Yet we fail to recognize this basic truth, or we at least pretend we do. Many of the beliefs that we uphold, both within the more traditional christian sense and the more modern progressive sense, contradict the ways of the world. And morality itself, I've found, is more about how one's perceived vs how they treat others. Basically, identity/image = virtue. And there are people who use morality, and virtue, as a leverage to compete for social status, as well to manipulate others. This goes back to what I said before about the two types of people who use platitudes. The Proud family is the type of show that uses these platitudes in such an empty way, all the while using harmful stereotypes and divisive politics. If you actually pay attention, you'll see that the whole show proves my point. It's a world where social status means everything; how successful you are, how much respect you receive, and how good your life will be in general. And yet everyone stupidly pretends otherwise. Trudy and Sugamama will gladly validate Penny in one breath, even when she's the one at fault, and then berate and belittle Oscar in another. The end result of this idiocy is that social dynamics are maintained. Hierarchies are never challenged because those who would have the motivation to do so are taught not to. In fact, Wizard Kelly is the mayor. Who in Hell would vote for this black ass version of Buck Strictland? And screw you, that was funny. The first step to solving any problem is to admit there is one. But nothing gets solved when it's socially incorrect to even do so.

10:54 growing up the way I did was extremely hard! Being a child born with cerebral palsy and having to be in a wheelchair is hard enough in any circumstance, but when you start school before anybody else because they make you start school at the age of 2 because of your disability and then you are held back in school because of all the surgeries that you had to have. I had to be operating on seven times and keep in mind this was the 80s! When I was finally able to be mainstreamed (put into a regular classroom setting) I was already a year behind everybody else. The fact that I was well spoken (always being grammatically correct) did not help much. You can blame my 2 aunts for that they were both English teachers! I was always the class clown when I was little! Once I got out of elementary school and into middle school it hit me. I pretty much changed into someone who figured out that I had to be smart just to survive. Once I got into the 6th grade, I did a complete 180! Once I got home from school, I immediately got to the kitchen table and my mom set up the typewriter just like I asked her to, and I started doing my homework before I did anything else! Sometimes I wouldn't even eat until all my homework is done! I was always a television head so I would be into things like sci-fi! and particularly the news. I need the answer to every question before it was pretty much asked! That did not endure me to anyone once I got out of elementary school into middle school. Once you get into high school it gets worse, I was always called nerd because I dressed a certain way. You only got respect if you were disrespectful to other teachers, and you were the “bad boy”, and I just didn't want to be that way! I may have wanted to play the “kissing” game like all boys my age! Lol but I wasn't considered attractive! I wasn't able to go to school dances the way that I wanted to because we didn't have the transportation and get from my house to the school (unless it was a school authorized field trip) but I kept at it. Now, after it's all said and done, dropped out of high school, graduated college and I became a poet! It really isn't the best environment unless you are able bodied, and you have to embody aspects of the jock and the nerd! It isn't easy but it can be done, and TV shows need to do a better job of showcasing that for black boys, so you don't have to fall into the trap of believing that you have to be one thing or another. You could be equal parts nerd and equal parts jock if you can apply yourself. This is the quandary that lies at the heart of most of the problems in black America! We need kids to have both strength of mind and pure strength of body. We need more people like Myron and less people like Futures.

The trope of "nerdy black dude" in particular rubs me the wrong way not just because it's the "nerd/geek=ugly loser" concept but it also brings in the thing where it's "weird" when black men are into nerdy things especially in the 90s/2000s shows/movies. Whenever there's a nerdy black guy there's almost always jokes from other characters about "how black" they are and they're "acting white". It's like, so what are they saying? Black men are supposed to be ignorant or uneducated by default and can't enjoy nerdy things? There's this maybe unintended message behind the trope that really doesn't sit right with me.

I think with the glasses thing, it’s shown as a negative, as it symbolizes impairment, or a disability to be corrected. Kind of like braces too. Also the reason it’s attributed to needs is number one to show the audience that they’re not desirable/pitiful and also because glasses are often attributed to academics like reading, or science. Also, in my high-school we had cliques, but there was often overlap. There wasn’t exactly a social heiarchy either

I googled "nerd origin" and it says it was a term made by Dr. Suess in his book "If I ran the zoo", according to the Liberty Science Center. I think the nerd trope became huge in 80s media. I felt self-conscious about wearing glasses in elementary school and didn't consistently wear them until I developed an astigmatism in 11th grade. (I also kept losing and accidentally breaking my glasses.) I was never made fun of for wearing glasses though. I have a little hope for Myron's character, it seems like he has a supportive Mom that encourages his academic prowess and he's dating Zoey. So, I don't think those jabs from Maya and the others will affect him too much. Clowning characters for having asthma, a congested voice or for wearing glasses seems a little ableist to me. 🤷‍♀

So, there WAS a social hierarchy in my middle school, but it wasn't a clear distinction, like "Jocks on top, nerds on the bottom." It was sort of a mixed bag. It was like... There were the Cool Theater Kids, the Cool Jocks, the Cool Robotics Kids, the Cool Spirit Club Kids, the Cool NJHS Kids. So, like, there were hierarchies WITHIN the groups. You could be in robotics club, and be Cool. You could be in art club and be Cool. That's something that confused THE HECK outta me. Like, say if we're all being silly in the gym. If I (the clumsy kid with frizzy hair) decided to spin around in circles, then I'm being "weird," and "stupid" and I need to stop it. But if one of the girls with manicured nails and perfect eyeliner is sticking a basketball under her shirt, saying: "Look, I'm pregnant!" or throwing herself at the padded wall, then EVERYBODY is laughing, talking about how funny she is.

I grew up in South Africa. My high school specifically was generally lacking in funds,but our school was very diverse culture wise. I remember my friend group specifically had 3 of the kids with the best grades and a bunch of really sporty kids. Our school did have a sort of social hierarchy ,but the kids who excelled is sports or academics usually could fit in anywhere and not have much happen to their reputation.There was this one guy who considered himself a nerd with the glasses and everything (he got good grades and we both played for our school chess team),but even his friend group had people of all different kinds of interests and social standing.

Me growing up being not only fitting the "nerd" but also being latino. Nobody will talk my way. I cant socialize with my own people because they would outcast me. It wasnt until I moved to a different state is where people started accepting me. My guess it was because this was during the whole anime, comics, dnd were becoming popular trend was starting. I feel there should be a season 3 episode showing that shows Myron inability to interact with people and he values Penny and the gang as his friends. Thus showing them some sympathy and empathy of how it feels not to be included in conversations or not being treated differently by the relatives and community of people around him.

In my school everyone had their own groups and will only join others if they were friends/knew eachother because maybe they were bored of their own group or they didn't come to school or some sht happened so they wanna spill the drama out. I wouldn't say there was a hierarchy but you could def tell who were the popular ones cause in every school event they were somehow relevant plus everyone knew who they were. There was def a group of outcasts or 'weirdos' because of their way of thinking/opinions and actions which some can and cannot be justified; if you were the weird one people will constantly go up to you to give you conversation to have more sht to talk about later when you are out of their sight. When I mean some were justified I mean that maybe they had sexist, misogynistic and anti-jew opinions. THOSE in my opinion is a normal reason why nobody would wanna talk to them and be considered 'weird'. Not justified is perhaps someone that writes fanfiction, creates OCs, or some neurodivergent actions that are out of their control.

there were definitely cliques back at my school. some formed and grew around people who knew each other from elementary school (later on from other schools), but mostly it was just about interests and personalities. people with the same interests flocked together or even took part in the same extracurriculas. even those who fit the "nerd" type varied in their popularity, depending on how extroverted they were and how niche their interests were. of course, people from the same group tended to end up in a relationship but there were cases of "crossbreedings" if you will lmao. the ones ostracized typically showed unusual behaviour or stood out in other "weird" ways that weren´t related to their looks. this is talking about highschool though, i don´t remember middle school as clearly.

I feel that for Myron, he was defidently drawn and written to be a token black NERD or DWEEBUS character and that episode with him running with that rumor that he and Penny had smooched in that closet during her party defidently focused on like how social structure and perview of peers can change and flip on a dime and that the popular can suddenly be questioned and how the unpopular can rise to become part of the high tier clicks from just rumored speculative word of mouth. I remember also in my High School how there were also the selective tiers and clicks, but it wasnt absolute and that different factors of people can come in and have a diverse and mixed group of individuals in their friend group, but what you said mostly resonated with me and I completely agree with your points and logical sense.

Imma ask everybody this question: Where do/would you draw the line between ARCHETYPE and STEREOTYPE as far as characters, traits, etc?
@tomrojigualdo
@tomrojigualdo 9 месяцев назад
Well I didn't think about that before... I would say archetypes are based on narrative tropes; let's say, a villain with a tragic past is an archetype, because yes, shitty people can have awful upbringings, but in a fictional case it seems to be based on other fictional characters since we need to give an explanation for evil, whatever that might be. And the stereotype is based on prejudices against real groups of people. Idk if I make a lot of sense, it's a bit late as of now. But yeah, archetypes and stereotypes have a blurry line separating them, since they overlap so much. Personally I'm not familiar with the black nerd in media (here The Proud Family didn't even air that much, if any, and vast majority of shows focused on a white cast), so I'm curious whether of the two you consider the trope.

Even in the new series, Myron is treated badly well except his potential relationship with Zoey. But honestly it’s well deserved with how much he gets on a daily basis. And it’s such an outdated trope that just because you wear eyeglasses it makes your nerd and makes you unattractive or makes you look ugly. Give me a break. I heard in season three as well they start to delve deep into Myron’s character and hopefully continue his relationship with Zoey. Because he honestly deserves it. And to answer your question, Thank God, in my high school and middle school days there was nothing or no such thing as hierarchy among statuses everyone was perfectly chill but I guess this was a time before social media was a thing. And Also I wear glasses, because I hate contacts.

In middle school there was definately somethign of a hierarchy In high school, it was there to some extent still because I went to a place where there was one high school and one middle school but a bit more nebulous. It was mainly divided by classes - AP kids with AP kids, IB kids with IB kids, etc. and based around what clubs you went to or sports you played which naturally blended some people to different onces still based around being "nerd" and "jock" sorta things. LIke for example a lot of people in the anime club were the typically not conventionally attractive and were the typical geeky/nerdy type. That said, my school was not today volatile but it was a public school in a lower income area. I was pretty passive as a kid and had to deal with people poking me with pens and pencils, pulling my hair, making it known they did not want me to sit with them, knocking things on my desk for no reason, etc. if a rumor boosted my social status to where I wouldn't have to deal with anything like that I honestly wouldn't have said shit either.

Agreed, many ppl think I look very pretty with glasses. In my school, the cliques went my social group and race. The black kids had their own cliques. Latino cliques also had their own cliques. Honors students hung out with each other. Same goes for the jocks, the burn outs, band/art/theatre kids, and anime kids. As for the smarts kids. From what I seen many of the brainy kids were somewhat popular. 5 out of the 10 kids, who graduated in the top of my class, where jocks.

You know, unlike that boy from Odder Things who preferred white girls Myron seems to be more accepting of ladies from different cultural backgrounds and who knows with Noah still being in their school and seeing Zoey as a friend, he might develop an opinion on Noah as time progresses cause unlike Noah, Myron doesn’t seem to have a preference. Myron might even be a bit more sensitive because Noah did mess with Zoey. And with the fact that Noah is popular and Myron isn’t that factor could come in to play too. Myron might even come to see Noah as a jerk cause as we saw, Noah had other interests in that other white girl while going out with Zoey who’s sweet.

funny thing is. i diden't really get to experience alot of that stuff in high school. mainly i was left out of alot of social groups, projects and so on. mainly not fitting in with the general trends or the whole "we gotta be young and party" and i kinda just keep on asking "why does it have to be like crazy parties" (mind you where i am from the legal drinking age of anything under 10% alcohol is like 16 and 18 for anything above 10%, those laws are currently being changed a tiny bit from 10% to 9%). Now in those days i kinda don't remember much, i think i was just below even nerds i think. then again i diden't grow up to hate anyone really, i just kinda feel like a lonely person who struggles to connect with people due to alot of other factors and being mainly cut off, excluded or outright betrayed by people i thought were my friends. But yea either way, those social things kinda exsist, but as i tried to say, i diden't get to experience much of it due to just not finding it all that interesting to get into a certain role. i mainly just became that "weird" fella that just sits by himself and only gets spoken to when there is needed something of him. Btw neat videos, i did kinda see those trends in kid shows and just in general. sterotypes kinda just hammer home points at times, though if it is done disrespectfuly then yea

I love how quickly you’re able to put these videos out because of the organic rant style (reminds me of early youtube days) but I think your points will come across more clearly and more concise if you wrote them down. My graduating class didn't have many typical nerds. There were two groups of popular students: the athletes and the preppy mathletes (most of who were also in track). I was probably the closest to being a nerd yet not the stereotype. Even I was more of a geek who hung out with the other geeks. I didn't have straight A's and I sucked at math, but I was great at science. I was the student that others would try to cheat off of or asked for answers. I was still a frequent target of bullying from the jocks, especially during gym class because I am just not athletic at all. Even though my school had a lot of mixing, there was still a hierarchy that was clear. The popular students (especially the girls) wouldn't have given a nerd or geek a chance. At my school, a lot of people didn't fit just one clique, yet the popular students were still jocks and pretty girls.

I just want to say thank you for this timely video. I'm getting glasses in a week and I'm the only person in my family that has never had glasses... I've been over correcting my vision my entire life apparently lmao. Anyway... the social higharchy in school was fuuuuuuuccccccckkkkeeeeddddd up. Lol!! It was straight up mean girls in middle school. In high school in one state it was totally fine, but education was actually really saught after in this school, but then I moved and it went back to social bs, but, it wasn't as bad. Middle school was a nightmare though. Literal hell. IDK if myrion would have been an incel but he definitely did a guy thing that I've seen happen, and I was the Penny in the situation. It was frustrating. I totally get what he did that though. If I were in that situation I would've done the same lol It's stupid that nerds can't be cool though. Lol I learned about a health condition that causes an over bite, and the typical "nerd" trope IRL, I forget what it is called 😩 but i wonder if that's what most "nerds" are modeled after. I hope that in the next season we can see other people's home life, even if it's an episode a day. Like that episode with the Muslim girl who's name is escaping me ATM. I really enjoy your videos, as always!! 🕊️

About 2 years ago at the end of my junior year, I was hanging out in a classroom when some of my friends decided to play music. At some point, a kid id never met before was getting ready to ask me what song to play next, but before he finished asking me the question, he looked at me and then said “oh no! Never mind, you look like a nerd!” He then asked me if I was smart and I told him not really. Now in real life, I’ve worn glasses since I was 7, and I’ll admit, I did look a little nerdy at times, not anymore I think 🤔, I’m also skinny, black, and at the time this happened, I also had braces too. I would say I’m a smart guy, not straight A smart😅 not even close, but when I pay attention and try, I do pretty well. But what bothered me was that he judged me before getting to know me and assumed I didn’t play the same music (rap) he’d play, which I did/do. But instead he took one look at me and thought I didn’t. It also bothered me too how I said I’m not really smart to him cause I was quickly trying to change his mind about me being a nerd. I’ve mostly moved on from that but every now and then it does bother me whenever I think about it 😔.

My group was interesting in the social hierarchy. Our table was where people tended to sit if they were fighting with their friends. We didn’t really tolerate any weird social nonsense, so it was a nice neutral ground until things got resolved. Either they would join our group after a while or go off in a different direction. Definitely the nerd table, definitely not the cool crowd, but I think people liked our vibes.

My high school was really big and while this is another stereotype but we had a lot of asian kids so we had a pretty big "nerd" table at lunch. We definitely had some form of cliques but none of us were bullied for just being a nerd, people really just minded their own business. That being said I think like maybe 2 people in our 12ish people group didn't have glasses so their is something to that stereotype, it's just that not every single person who has glasses is also a nerd. I think for stuff like animation though, character designs are very intentional because you don't wanna draw an additional things for every frame if it doesn't tell you something about the character. Obviously real people can have glasses without it being a reflection of who they are as a person but when you're animating it, that's a time and money cost. This ends up with the only characters with glasses are the ones who are nerds cuz it tells us something about that character.

The glasses thing always seemed weird to me because how people look really depends on the style of glasses. Like cat-eye glasses are very different from round glasses which are different from square glasses or rectangular glasses, then there's glasses that are hearts or stars and also glasses that are different sizes. Like my normal glasses are rectangular, but then I have pink heart shaped ones that look completely different. My school didn't really have cliques like that. Some people were more well-known than others, but nobody was really "popular". I don't think I ever knew who was on the football or other sports teams and I only knew one girl was a cheerleader because I had a class with her, but she didn't look like your stereotypical cheerleader. She was well-known due to being a nice person. From what I remember all the well-known people were I guess "popular" because they were sociable and nice.

With regards to the hierarchy thing, maybe it's just an autism thing or maybe this social structure only exist in American schools, but I never noticed much of a set ranking order. Of course, there were always the ones who talked loudest, got peoples attention, people cared enough to gossip about, ect. but with my limited understanding of these archetypes I'd categorise them more as class clowns than popular kids. Idk maybe that's just because I find them really annoying. I never understood how these "popular kids" things work. How is it decided who's popular or not? How does one become popular? How are others informed of who's popular and who's not? How does one treat a popular kid any differently than they would another kid? How does being popular make them automatically entitled to better treatment than others, and not being popular make one deserving of being treated poorly? Is there a gray area? What would that gray area look like? Again, this could just be my autism making me not understand social rules, roles and constructs. I don't understand how any one person can be inherently better or more important than anyone else.

I don't know if that's a commentary on society viewing things as ugly even when they aren't just to conform to norms or what but it's something I've always found to be really weird.
