I agree 100 percent! Especially for the new Downtown Brooklyn of today which has lot more population today than in 1969 when the Myrtle Ave el ended service.
Until its demolition in 1968 the Myrtle Avenue elevated train ran above that entire section of Myrtle Avenue. The section east of Broadway is still around, as the M train. West of Broadway the only remaining evidence of the old El is the skeletal steel structure in the last few minutes of the video. When the Transit Authority demolished the El it left this two-block structure remaining, without tracks, in order to support electrical cables running to a substation. At around 13:20 the green globes of a subway station are visible on the left sidewalk. This is the underground Myrtle-WIlloughby station of the G train, also known as the Crosstown Line, which runs between Brooklyn and Queens without entering Manhattan and crosses here perpendicular to Myrtle Avenue.
I was lucky to ride it just before the end. It had no future. it could only support the Q cars that barely on their last legs. There was no way the mta would spend millions to rebuild an elevated line that was left as a stub end after the 1944 demolition of the line to Brooklyn Bridge. After riding it I was amazed it lasted until Oct 1969.
Thank you. Tony lived in Bay Ridge Brooklyn probably 20 min away. Met John Travolta outside Central Park New York about 20 years ago coming out of a limo. It was pretty cool
