I was on the "Good Bye Myrtle" train the day after the line closed in October 1969. It was an Electric Railroaders Association fan trip. I was 12 at the time. I also rode it a few times before that. My old friend Spike Lee had moved to Washington Park, about a block from the el just before it closed. That same day the Mets won the first game of the first ever National League Championship Series, beating the Braves 9-5. A couple days later, I was at Shea Stadium when they won 7-4 to sweep the series.

And within a year (1970) the myrtle avenue EL would go to the acetylene torches. the songs for that year was, No Time from the, 'Guess Who' and 'Reflections Of My Life' from Marmalade.

I remember this line well. In the 50/60s lived in Bushwick and later Flatbush. My dad had the newsstand under the stairway up to the myrtle el and Broadway el. Went to Bklyn Tech. And later Bklyn Poly (at the jay street terminus of the myrtle el).

If these trains were running today they would have eased the tremendous overcrowding we see every day in the New York City subways!!!! What shame that they were not kept up and running!!!

I believe we are facing toward the Brooklyn Bridge and Sands St Terminal in this photo? If so, it should be curving off to the left further down but I don't see it. Can anyone explain?

The seats were made of wicker. I remember as a 8 or 9 year old wearing shorts, sitting and flying up because every once in a while the wicker broke and stuck you. :-)

Fantastic photos. Used to ride this everyday to high school. From Seneca Ave station to Vanderbilt Ave.& return. This was in the late 50's early 60's. Thanks for posting.

Judging by the train cars and background, most of the color photos are from the late 50's through late 60's. The Black and White are from the 40's.

Great video, was wondering if you could tell me the dates in which the bulk of the pictures were taken? Thanks.
