Avebury in Wiltshire is a Neolithic henge and is the largest stone circle in Europe and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Avebury stone circle and its banks and ditches were erected around 4,300 years ago.
The stones circles are free to access and car parking during January was £4. We took a guided tour which is well worth it and is only £3 per person.
After #Avebury we headed to our overnight accommodation at the Bath Arms at Longleat which is about 30 miles from Avebury. On the way we stumbled across the Westbury White Horse a giant hill figure on the escarpment of Salisbury Plain. #VisitEngland #VisitWiltshire

Amazing place! I spent the whole day there yesterday. The Red Lion pub is worth a visit.

There's something about these places that I truly adore. These ancient sites - I try to imagine how they were years and years ago. It is amazing they are still standing nowadays. The town looks quite lovely, too!

It's a very pretty little village. It is remarkable that some of those stones have been there for 5000 years.

Wow, those ancient stone circles are so intriguing. They are found almost in all cultures around the world, and we still do not know the exact reason they were erected in circles or squares.

Yes, they are intriguing. The stones are so heavy as well and they were transported some long distances as well, they are still not sure how it was done.

Can't believe your Avebury tour was just £3/person! Your guide seemed very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the history of the stones they were talking about and I've always found guided tours to be much more enjoyable and worthwhile than trying to look up the information on my own and then wandering without direction.

All the guides are volunteers and yes, they are very knowledgeable.

Love the little magical beginning. This is very interesting stuff. You need a drone to get the circle from the air.

Alas, no drones - They are not allowed over most National Trust monuments.

I like your new beard! Looks very handsome and rugged :) Wow, this stone circle is a mile long!? That's impressive. Also can't believe that stone is 5,000 years old. How fascinating! I would much rather see this site than the Stonehenge.

Thanks, it's my new rugged winter look. Avebury is often overlooked but it is a fascinating place and there is unrestricted access unlike stonehenge.

We heard about Avebury while visiting Stonehenge but unfortunately didn't have time to stop by. It's definitely a lot bigger than Stonehenge!

It's not as busy as stonehenge and you have free access to the stones as well.

That ancient site is very interesting and must visit as well, I wonder there are many stones in UK? The complete meal looks delicious.

It is an amazing place and fascinating. As you can see by a number of my local Welsh videos I am interested in history. But what I do object to is new-age nonsense. If that means something to you, well that's your business, but if you find my disbelief offensive, well so be it.
