I'm starting to put some serious work and resources into this channel to create well-researched video essays on the mysterious and unexplained. Subscribe, and stay tuned!
It's incredible to think that behind each and every one of those skulls is a story, a life lived that is unique from all the other skulls in those catacombs.
Unknown Guy It would be because he forgot which way he had come. The only reason why the professional crawlers knew where they were going was because they'd been navigating that place for years.
Imagine being trapped in total darkness, surrounded by the bones of the dead, with no way out, and you realize you'll never leave. It would be terrifying, especially since it would've taken the guy maybe 3 or 4 days to die of thirst. Longer If he dared to drink any of that water down there.
That explorer is still down there, running. He can no longer tell if it's been a day or a year or a hundred years. His mind is fogged over by his terror, and there can be no respite, and it will never end. He does not undestand that he has become part of what he went down there to photograph. He does not realize that he is a ghost.
***** You idiots he said " He does not undestand that he has become part of what he went down there to photograph. He does not realize that he is a ghost. "
Why people want to go deeper and deeper in the catacombs? you won't find anything else then bones and all alike passages, it's not like there is the philosopher's stone down there
The guy is obviously dead, if he wasn't- he would've come forward claiming it was him. It's very unlikely he would've found a way out without a source of light.
+MsLalaUsagi i agree it is way to dark down there and he didnt go back for his camera with the light he must have gotten scared and panicked and just kept running in the dark
The guy is so deep in the catacombs, he probably spooked himself when he realized he was lost, surrounded by thousands of dead, and felt so alone that fight or flight kicked in. Which is unfortunate because being scared like that only pushed him deeper into the chambers.
That fucking face from Russian Sleep Experiment keeps staring at me from the suggested videos on the side. Looks like I'll just be listening to the audio because fuck that shit.
I just want to put into perspective the guy who was lost down there. People don't realize how insane of a way to die that is. Were talking he was by himself deep inside here. Something scared the shit out of him and made him drop his camera. Now he's lost. It goes like this. Your running scared with no way out. No exit. You can only run for so long. Eventually his batteries would of died. He would of been in that darkness completely alone scared to death FOR DAYS. I'n the darkest darkness you can imagine. With the fear something is following you. Could you imagine. Your exhausted you know your not going to get out. You have no clean water and no food. You would die of dehydration or starvation if you found water. Could you imagine the days that poor soul must of spent down there? The agonizing days where you feel like you are in the deepest pit of hell before you die. And all he could do was wither away. I want to know what his days were like. If he just gave up. How he passed or if he ever got out.
there is no way he survived.. it's pitch black, dark as dark can be, his only light source was the camera.. and miles full of 1000 corridors.. that guy didnt survive
Can't tell why it's so illegal to explore the Catacombs. They should treat it like spelunking or caving; you should be free to do so - but at your own risk. What should be illegal is the (presumably) authorities who blocked the manhole back to street level. That could very likely kill someone.
It's also natural selection, if you die, good less idiots reproducing :D jk I think they should have some sort of a rope/string attached to where you enter so you don't get lost
Agreed! I feel like its actually MORE dangerous to block it off. In this video the exit hatch was locked and they could have easily run out of flashlight batteries on the 6 mile walk back to the way they entered. Imagine an amateur explorer be lost and after a day of trying to find a way out they come across an exit hatch, only to find that the police locked it off lol.
Am I the only one who thinks this is fake? The fact that this guy is a filmmaker raises skepticism, but hey why wouldn't a filmmaker try to solve a mystery of a missing guy? first thing the guy never says a single word, even though you can hear footsteps, and heavy breathing, but nothing to say? highly doubtful. the ball dropper was the light source he only had one light source which was on the camera, when he dropped it he dropped the light source along with it. the host showed us how dark it can get when there is no light. so why on earth didn't he immediately come back and pick up the camera with the only light source? The possibility of him dropping the camera out of fear is a possibility, but not realising "oh shit i cant see anything" and not going back is so clear its fake.. Also why wasn't the guy who gave the tape interviewed? no insight from him? he was a explorer too right? Edit: The light source seems to be detachable from the camera, some shots you can see the light move independently, but after he has dropped the camera when you see him run, there was no light of any kind with him.
Le2DaRoy I would like to point out one flaw in your argument, however, I still agree with you - but for different reasons. First, it is possible that the camera had an infrared night vision light on it, which would be useless to human but still light up the scene perfectly for the film. He may have dropped the camera and wouldn't gave gone back for infrared light. However, I too think it's fake. Your argument about him being a filmmaker is spot on. Further, after they decide to turn around, then end up finding all the spots that were on the tape - how climactic! Considering this was their first try, and they were already able to find the exact locations the mystery tape filmed at - why did they just call it quits and say it is unsolvable. With the unbelievable luck they had on their first expedition, they might just find the guy on their second or third trip... I think they created the tape, knew where those bones rooms / paintings were, and then filmed it as if it was an exploration... yup, fake.
hypurban "First, it is possible that the camera had an infrared night vision light on it, which would be useless to human but still light up the scene perfectly for the film. He may have dropped the camera and wouldn't gave gone back for infrared light." I do not understand what you are trying to say here, but if the infrared on the camera was working, then fine. it doesn't matter because he would need a light source of some kind for him to be able to see in the dark. but he dropped it just before he ran away. "Further, after they decide to turn around, then end up finding all the spots that were on the tape" - more evidence that this is a fake. they said these tunnels are very long, its highly unlikely.
Le2DaRoy Infrared light is invisible to humans, but not invisible to cameras (this is how night vision worked). If the camera was using infrared instead of regular light, it wouldn't be a useful flashlight for him - since you can't see with infrared light. Anyway, I was just playing the devils advocate, since that would be one possible explanation as to why he left the camera. At any rate I agree it's fake, especially with them finding the same exact tunnels. Too good to be true.
+Le2DaRoy this was my first thought as well. I want more info on the camera, who found it, when did they find it, how did they find it? I think this guy filmed the "missing footage" himself.. this would probably be a more well known case if it were an actual unsolved mystery and SOMEONE would have come forward by now claiming to know the missing man, or claiming to BE the creator of the original footage, if he made it out.
If the show's intention was to frighten me by placing a female voice with a raspy tone narrate the show it did a very poor job of scaring me. It was annoying and even sounded stupid at times
I mean its one thing to map it with lasers or radar, or whatever... entirely different to actually walk the damn thing. I'd like to see a well funded expedition explore these catacombs, just to see what's all down there. This thing is ancient, no telling what could be found there besides bones.
I could go into the main part of it, but crawling through "cracks" and squeezing myself through small tunnels, then walking through regular tunnels that are right above your head, knowing you're like 300ft below ground. No thanks, i'll pass on that, I don't care how experienced the people with us are lol
I couldn't imagine myself being so desperate for an adrenaline rush that I'd be prepared to risk being trapped underground in pitch blackness without a hope in hell of escape, but then I've never been that kind of person and a very boring world it would be if we were all the same. The trouble with being an adrenaline junkie is that it's like any other addiction - every hit needs to be bigger to give the same effect.
I think that with all the new virtual reality technology coming out.. they should make a first person POV horror game based on the real mapped parts of the catacombs and add some twists like finding new paths off the grid and finding/ seeing/ hearing some scary shit that you have to hide from the deeper you go until you eventually find "the gates of hell" deep within the labyrinth!
After 6 hours they were running low on batteries? I would have taken a Dietz air pilot kerosene lantern down there, not only do they light up a whole area instead of just a beam, they can run for almost 36 hours on one tank of kerosene which is about a little over a quart of fuel and they cost less than $30, lol. I took one into a cave once and people with little flashlights were flocking around me, lol
They literally got right to where the guy had been in his video and they didn't even continue the search the next day. What a bunch of wimps. They could at least say what location he was in for other people to continue the search where they left off?
That is fair. They could have brought oxygentanks though, or let another expedition know the location so a different set of persons with permission could continue the hunt. That would have been really great.
i wouldn't last TEN minutes down there! it's a miracle the guy lasted as long as he did and can't blame him for panicking this is NOT an adventure for anyone with claustrophobia, fear of the dark, etc (like me)
To some of the people who keep asking why he is running. He is having a panic attack. And yeah like why wouldn't it set in earlier well Maybe he is like some of those people where they know what is going on but the realization hits him too late and that's why he starts running out of no where. Poor guy.
Either it' a hoax, or some tragically unprepared man went into the catacombs. I think if he had emulated cave divers, he would have had many backup lights, and many reels that cave divers use to find their way out of a cave/or shipwreck in zero visibility. If I ever went into the Catacombs, I would tell at least three trustworthy people, so that they could report me lost if I didn't emerge close to the time I'd told them. I also be carrying as many lights and batteries and cave/wreck diving reels as possible, I'd also bring water, a life straw, and energy bars, but untold different lights and batteries for them all. How terrifying to be alone, in the dark.... and lost.
I have a pretty good theory (I am a former Police Officer). The dude got about 300 feet below (that is where you first generally encounter the bones) and he looked into one of the rooms and saw some type of creature or troll. He got panicked when he saw the thing start to move and come out of that room. He starts running. The light on his camera is now being used by the creature that is chasing him in order to pinpoint his location. He realizes this and ditches the camera and risks it in the darkness hoping he finds his way out. I am getting chills thinking about this. If you were scared enough and thought you were about to get eaten you would probably throw your only light source away too.
Not if it is behind him and he is running away from it. Maybe he saw something with his own eyes that his camera was not focused on (he was looking in another direction).
Molly Denney if u're refering @ dante's inferno wich i think u are, there are 9 levels honey :) so more hell so nothing weird or maybe there are also 9 down there or who knows how many
they probably left glow sticks or something to show them where they came from because the beginning of the clip, it shows they had to jump over a bricked wall to get to the tunnel and at the end of the video it showed them jumping back over the bricked wall from the other side.
in complete darkness aswell if he now dropped his camera.. i'd freak the fuck out. BUT! it would be fun if this is just a prank from the guy "dropping" his camera so he'd get a story of being the "lost man" in Paris catacombs. He might aswell know the catacomb very well and made the video as realistic as possible. And brought an extra camera/flashlight with him.
Who's to say that they director being interviewed wasn't the one behind the filming of footage? I've definitely seen a trend of people pulling a Blair Witch all over the place...do we actually have proof that the camera was found deep inside. The reason I ask these things is that it's very unlikely that a single person would trek deep into this place, unprepared, all alone, no back-up. Seriously, would you? I've seen full grown dudes freaking out, just having to walk into a dark room on that ole MTV show "fear." I just ain't buying this story....
Can you imagine owning a home in Paris , finding an entrance in your basement opening it to find a mummified body mouth agape in horror with claw marks on the otherside. I'd cry
there is absolutely no god damn way i would go in there again point black period. . . . . . unless xD i had like a better group of people with me cause huh no way in hell i would go with the group i had before. ( side note: we got lost for a while cause someone had a great idea to go out of the zone to "check it out" and well we wouldn't change his mind and he went in and well someone had to get him back xD ). but after that people started sayin stupid shit like lets split up bish this aint Scooby-doo when is it ever a good idea to split up ? NEVER
I know right and these mofos be like well it worked out in Scooby-doo xD bish its a cartoon everything works out in cartoons we in satans playhouse man xD it aint gonna work like that .
Imagine being the miners that had to build this place, your knowledge of where you were going must've had to be immense. They didn't have flashlights in the 1700's and everyone talking about this is saying you're basically dead without light down there. Crazy stuff.
Hey, I am... By the way, I have a strong feeling that even these guys didn't go as far as the lost dude did...They just got to the bones on the ground and went back... I wanna know what could he see behind that wall... :)
Mikko Kanerva that's the really interesting question here. logically, you would assume that he just panicked over the fact that he would never find a way out of the catacombs. but wouldn't he think about that much earlier? and also, the panicattack comes pretty much out of nowhere, he just starts to run from one second to the other. and he would never leave his camera behind, for it was his only proper lightsource. unfortunately though, we'll never know what happened. he was propably deeper inside of the catacombs than anyone before, and noone would risk his life going down there that far. so we'll never know what he was running from, but whatever it was, it was something that scared him to death, because that's what the dropping of the camera led to.
Since they found the camera why couldn't these people get a trained dog and have it sniffed the camera so they could use the dog to guide where the unknown man is located in the catacombs?
+Jose Quintero Because it is too dangerous and dogs can't climb like humans. Plus the man could have been gone for years... So it doesn't really make sense to use a dog here.
I think the whole footage thing is a hoax. There's apparently 400 miles of tunnels down there, how would these people just happen to find the EXACT spots shown in the video after they agree to give up? It would be nearly impossible.
+ThatRasberryChick its is possible to find the same path , cuz they took the same enterence as the lost man does , but finding the lost man is nearly impossible because after he dumped the camera , he just running randomly in the catacomb and probably 6-8 miles away from the camera last location ...
Leonard Fair Lol For some reason I'm starting to think that he really needed to go to the bathroom really bad and had an upset stomach on the way down there, so that's why you see him running faster and faster and then he like drops the camera because he can't hold it no more. Either way I feel sorry if that was the actual cause of his disappearance.
Ever since I was 13 years old I have been watching history & all kinds of documentaries for the catacombs. I think it was back in 2014 that they actually had did a movie about it. It's called As Above So Below. Anyway as much documentaries in the history that I seen for this catacombs stuff. I've been wanting to go there and explore for myself. So far hasn't made it there yet don't have that type of money I wish I won the lottery. Before I grow older and die of old age I want to come visit and explore this place myself badly. The catacombs truly does have a fantastic history behind it + the history and the documentaries are 100%very true. Also this is not just some haunted ghost stories either. What happened back in those old old old days it did happen it's real.
Also, why didn't he carry a box of chalk to blaze his trail, so that he could have found his way out that way? A properly blazed trail can be seen and followed out.
Here's my take on the catacombs. At some point when city depression occurred (any city) a bunch of homeless people with no place to go inhabited the catacombs. This wouldn't be too far out considering people have inhabited underground places all over the world. They are typically drug addicts, thieves, or murderers on the run. So if the footage is real, there's a good chance people down there will try to kill and or rob anyone who goes down there. It's like their own city. And you most likely see those people walking among you considering they have to come up to get money and food to survive since there's obviously no food down there. But, the stigma it carries from all the remains that were left down there causes us to automatically think "demon" and "evil". I could be wrong, but I'm a realest, and this would make 100% sense since we see it all over the world.
Edem Red That's a good possibility too. I don't see any paranormal out of this either. There's been many times when I was young when my mind played tricks on me. I'm still scared of the dark to this day lol, and I don't even believe in any paranormal activity. It's just the thought of not being able to see anything around me. But I do believe the homeless have inhabited them at one point. It would be the perfect spot to escape life.
I don't understand multiple things. Why would the dude drop his light, first off? Secondly, is there a full video of the lost catacomb guy's vid? Third, why did they not take a copy of the video down with them so they could follow the same tracks that the guy did? Or is that how they found the painting on the wall, they went to where the explorer found the camera?
i know, i was being snarky. and the guy who "was given the tape" is a filmmaker.... biggest red flag right there. so someone gave "evidence" of some guy's disappearance to a filmmaker, and not the police. yeah....because if my husband or brother or dad went missing, i'd surely ask a local filmmaker to solve it for me.
lah67 Exactly. I just feel that the production quality of this could have been a lot better, and less questionable. Making a solid story would have gotten this type of thing a lot more people talking about it.
TheCaliger In regards to the first question if this is real it's likely he dropped it in panic. If you start to feel such an intense fear that you're going to be stuck below paris forever to die you'd pretty much stop thinking and just run, hoping to find something
The only scary thing about this video was the narrator and the pitter patter of my mums footsteps in the kitchen down the hallway while I was watching it
The narrator is Zelda Rubinstein. She's a little person. She was an actress/narrator. She's also known for being in the poltergeist franchise. I'm shocked nobody knew immediately by her voice.
I remember this show back in 2001. I used to be scared of this show when I was younger and couldn't sleep. This show was used to be called "Dark Corners"
Here's how you map it out. Get some extreme super magnets and place them at north and south of the catacombs, get an automatic map generator that can then use the thing to automatically map the depth and distance traveled, get a bunch of batteries and some food and water, and then just start walking and essentially live down there and eventually leave.
Well let me Reveal: Its just Hoax, its the same Guy who is narrating and filming, He just made it up 1st for the popularity of the Film "So Above So Below" 2nd for the tourism attraction purposes, as he and the team showing with him inside well trained and knowledgeable abt catacombs backed by the government, as u can see he knew all where it was filmed that man shaped drawing and also the exit routes. Now dont ask me how im sure coz I know :) (hope they don't delete my comment)
This was filmed 15 years ago for tv, you can tell by how old the footage seems and I think the actress is (looks like ) Linda Blair, how could this be to promo as above so below when this was made 15 + years ago, as above so below just came out. Nice try though.
I wish I could say for the sake of the guy who got lost down there that this video was fake, but no, the tape was not just made for this series it actually featured on a lot of ghost hunting/creepy themed shows. I doubt, if it was filmed solely for the purpose of this film, that it would feature on other series due to copyright infringements. Also they would put "reenactment" or something like that so that people wouldn't get the wrong idea. But nope, some poor dude literally got lost in this fucking place trapped among millions of dead bodies and in claustrophobic conditions with no light... He most likely would have died of starvation and dehydration, alone in the dark... But he would have gone completely insane before that... This guys truly witnessed hell
Seriously, when they knew already where it was exactly, why did they leave? They could come back next day with more resources and show us where the guy paniced and started running.
*****Warning***** Heads up to anyone that maybe sensitive to videos with rapid movements. In about 15-20 seconds of watching this video, I felt horrible. So if you're like me that can't watch home videos because of the constant motion, you might want to stay away. To the person who posted this video I'm not trying to mess with your hits but it would be a good thing to warn people of this.
why don't do some fingerprint investigation at the camera that was found.maybe it will solve the mystery to know if the one who left it die or missing..ya dig!!
Jane Crocker is my Waifu or demons.im going for demons, and don't say they dont exist because there is infact.proof.archval footage/printed records/billion's and i do mean.BILLIONS of reports and eye witness accounts of those who have the misfortune to find themselves harboring one.
+Fufu as fuck It is mysterious because we do NOT know what happened to him. If this is even real (which i highly doubt) then he most likely died in thee tunnels as you said, but the fact that we do NOT know exctly what happened makes it a mystery.
If someone is daft enough to go down there without proper equipment, And some sort of experienced guide, And gets lost, Then its there own stupid fault
the guy just slowly started going crazy because he was completely alone in pure darkness surrounded by dead people and their spirits, possibly many evil spirits. then he just freaked out and ran off and probably ended up killing himself
A horrible, inhuman part of me wants to see his bloodied corpse on the French news, after he was attacked by other explorers who didn't know what he was. I'm not a psycho...
Is there less oxygen underground? I'm not the sharpest bulb in the knife drawer, but if he was low on oxygen maybe he started hallucinating, causing him paranoia.
Can you imagine starving for weeks in complete darkness? Especially when considering the paranormal aspect to it. I'd go crazy after the first day. It's such a scary thought.
I went in the catacombs once but then at the first hole that looked like a hole to hell, I turned around and said "WELL, this has been fun. Don't mind me, I'll just be leaving now."
